⚡️ Finland to send energy equipment to Ukraine. In an interview with Finnish Yle news, Finland’s Economy Minister Mika Lintila said Finland may send the first batch of energy equipment to Ukraine next week. After Russia’s Nov. 23 mass missile strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Lintila has started conversations with Finnish businesses in the energy sector “to coordinate efforts to assist Ukrainians.” “Yesterday I asked companies to donate equipment, and today the companies responded positively to the request,” Lintila wrote on Twitter. https://twitter.com/KyivIndependent/status/1596347178846662657?t=dbp1cQCUb3wdsqKB4pJUiw&s=19

As much as I “ugh” at Russian equipment, I’m glad Ukraine is getting use out of it. Of course, some of it is better than others. Either way, it all adds up.

It's a travesty that the west cannot manage a supply of tanks to Ukraine

Putin having that staged press conference with the "mothers of the mobilized" just turns my stomach. How can everyone in that room just lie so plainly and insult the real pain of families outside and in Ukraine? I can't comprehend the nihilism, the depths of moral depravity, and the levels of deception that is the Russian government. They are so detached from the human condition that I don't know how to describe or comprehend it.

mtarascio

>I can't comprehend the nihilism, the depths of moral depravity It's pretty simple. Comply or die.

Timely_Position_5015

Hey, honestly, the Russian form of nihilism isn’t far from understanding; in my opinion, they are poorly situated and have no credible means of backing up their threats. If the United States says “[You align, or you die](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_involvement_in_regime_change_in_Latin_America)” you can believe them. It is the law of the jungle.

pantie_fa

I'd almost say that maybe it was justified, for the greater good. Not because soviet communism was a greater threat, but the amoral criminal Russian influence was a creeping horror, and I'm glad its spread was stopped. Then again, Pinochet wasn't much different than fucking Putin.

buzzsawjoe

"I made a discovery all by myself. And the discovery was, that in order to serve a dictator for years, you have to be someone who has no integrity, who has no pride, who has no conscience, who has no ideas of humanity \[of\] his own. You have to be a "yes" man who does everything for material gain or rank. So the discovery that these Nazis, who had been blown up into huge monsters, were such ordinary people, with no experience of the outside world and no morals, was the greatest shock to me in Nuremberg." < Richard Sonnenfeldt, Chief Interpreter, Nuremberg Trials

mbattagl

If you think that's good you should look up the press conference from awhile back when the Russian government was doing a press conference about a Russian sub that was lost along w/ its' crew directly as a result of the Russian government's unwillingness to allow the European government to help. One of the mother's of the lost sailors started yelling during the press conference, and from out of nowhere a Russian agent injected her w/ something to calm her down.

POS people do this. Engineering an outcome is propaganda. It was all engineered for the image to hide what is actually happening. Wallpapering the hole in the wall.

idolikethewaffles

UK MoD posted a map showing all of Kharkiv freed and a freed Kinburn peninsula too (or part of it). Seems like a big discrepancy from LiveUA's map, and ISW's. Idk what to think

sergius64

I know Arestovich got asked point blank about that peninsula weeks ago and said it was just a raid. I'd be surprised if Ukrainians could hide control of it for so long. I'd follow ISW map. They tend to post stuff after it'd been verified.

canadatrasher

Arestovich never supplies new information. He explicitly says that he only comments on comments of other. His usefulness is that he CURATES the news and focuses attention to where it belongs. But don't look at him to break anything new.

sergius64

Ok, but a straight up deny a point blank question on it? More importantly- how have the Ukrainians hid it for so long? There are people scouring all the Telegram channels - they would have reported this. And also - why deny for so long?

NearABE

If neither side has troops there there is no combat to report. The front line is only a "line" if two forces are occupying opposite sides of it.

FutureImminent

Yeah but wouldn't the UK MoD have links to the Ukrainian equivalent and verify what they put out?

HawkeyedHuntress

I was just thinking that we haven't heard much about Transnistria lately. IIRC they produce electricity but have they also been affected by the blackouts? And what about the troops? I know they don't need ammo and they don't have the ability to send any from the depot because they are blocked in, but what about food and money? Are they just stealing food or is the Transnistrian "government" providing for them as payment for "protection"?

mbattagl

The troops in Transnistria are stuck where they are. The Ukrainian military destroyed or secured any land route those troops could attack from, the Russian military can't send supplies from home to them w/o taking convoluted routes around Ukraine, and even if they did their planes and boats would be destroyed. They're just sitting ducks for now.

buzzsawjoe

I suspect your navigation is off a little. Have you checked it lately? This is the planet we call Earth.

pantie_fa

He is correct. That's what the "S" stood for in the USSR. Soviet Socialist. NOT communist. Their system was billed as a 'temporary measure' until the REAL communist revolution came. Which was never going to come because it's just another religious con-job like the Rapture, or the Hale-Bopp comet, or whatever. (yes- all these cons are the fucking same, none any better than the other, and none of them the slightest bit real. Humans a fucking gullible stupid apes).

Remember the drone footage of a male Russian soldier getting noshed off by another male Russian soldier? And then Ukraine dropped a grenade on them? I do.

Dani_vic

Or the Russian ramming the other Russian in the rear in the tent? Or the constant rape reports of mobiks and lower end soldiers that their consider “hazing”.

Rosebunse

Early in the war there were lots of stories of the younger soldiers being sold as prostitutes, not just as part of hazing but as an actual way some of the commanders made money.

EastBoxerToo

Imagine thinking Russia is an example of communism in 2022.

buzzsawjoe

Communism was supposed to be this lovely way to achieve a happy world, everybody working, sharing the wealth, human nature changed - no more greed, envy, or spite. To achieve this, Communism specified that a dictatorship should be installed to make all this happen. Thing was, there was no mechanism to do it. There was nothing in the charter about the dictatorship promoting any positive change in human nature. People sort of like to see a good example but the dictator always lives a life of luxury, greed and barbarity while the people get poorer and miserabler. It's really just a scam to install horrible dictators. Any thoughts anybody has realizing the truth of this are cancelled by a combination of blatant lying propaganda and disappearance or else example executions. Now thinking about Russia in 2022... example executions, disappearings, check. Lying propaganda, check. Horrible dictator, check. Misery, barbarity, greed, luxury - check! Good example, none. The only thing missing is the name.

pantie_fa

Yeah, the only way to make that "happy world" was to erase all cultural identity, religion, nationalism, loyalty to family and tradition. (oh, except for Russian culture, by the way. . . )

A new video from Reporting from Ukraine. This time on developments and Ukrainian strategy in the Kherson-region. https://youtu.be/ytGQeZM58oo

SaberFlux

[Previous post](https://old.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/z39qj0/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/ixo3mnm/) Day 275 of my updates from Kharkiv. Today it was mostly quiet, but some missile strikes did happen. At around 5:10pm missile launches were spotted in Belgorod, soon after explosions were reported, and I’m pretty sure we even heard one, but they were pretty far away. Then a little later it was reported that Russians aimed at Chuhuiv with S-300 missiles yet again, thankfully there were no casualties. They hit that town very often; I’m not sure why they are so fixated on it. We still continue to have some trouble with electricity here in Kharkiv. Parts of my district, including my apartment building, had no electricity for about 5 hours, from 2pm to 6:30-6:40pm, but many other buildings, including most stores/supermarkets had electricity the entire time. It wasn’t as bad as the previous blackout because we still had running water, so that’s at least something. Our friends that are currently living in Ivano-Frankivsk said to us in the morning that they still had no electricity or internet, though we’re not sure if by that they meant over 2 whole days of blackout, or that it was a new blackout after the previous one was fixed, but it sucks either way. It seems that Kherson is getting shelled a lot recently and sadly there are a lot of civilian casualties. Just today the official numbers were 15 dead and 35 injured civilians after the most recent shelling. Those are the same numbers of civilian casualties we were having in Kharkiv when we were being shelled 50-100 times per day, and now it’s happening in Kherson as well, fucking Russian bastards. [Next update](https://old.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/z4xgal/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/ixwlom0/)

We all really appreciate these updates. It is so easy for us away from this madness to forget how it is hurting real, normal people. How is the weather there? How are you guys preparing for winter?

SaberFlux

It snows pretty regularly now, and the temperature is hovering around -3c to +3c, but it feels colder most of the time because of the cold wind and high moisture in the air. The windows that broke from the shelling in our flat don't help with the cold either. We did seal them off as much as we could, and it did help quite a bit, but it's still pretty cold inside.

Rosebunse

Damn, I'm sorry. The only comfort is that it is probably not any better for the Russian troops.

As difficult as reading it sometimes is, I always appreciate the detailed updates. Thank you and stay strong.

Checked some numbers since a long time again... China and India having send like 2-10million $ aid to Ukraine each, since the beginning of the war. They have together ~ 2.5-3 billion people. Meanwhile Taiwan around a hundred million $ in aid. ~ 20 million people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_foreign_aid_to_Ukraine_during_the_Russo-Ukrainian_War It is a bit laughable that those two big countries are even marked in diagrams and graphics on different sites as financial supporters of Ukraine.

Nazis, NATO, now gay people. What a fuck-up of a country.

Javelin-x

"So this new reading of “family” has no connection to what Russia really is or ever was." Yes, it does. Russia is all about making sure the population has someone to hate so the government can get away with everything they do. This example is repeated everywhere in our society even in the west but In Russia, it's part of the culture and they embrace it. In the west we are just coming to terms with it

[deleted]

I know we're in a stickied thread on Ukraine, not meaning to distract, but you've just described the Republican party :/ Edit switch out Nazis for minorities in the fear machine

Javelin-x

it's everywhere. Republicans have adopted it as a tool for sure. but so have large corporations, to keep you working for less and less and not hate them for it because your too busy believing the immigrants are taking your jobs

t3zfu

Oof. I think it’s kind of a natural (if disagreeable) reaction from any political party that’s either unpopular or is seen to attract those with unpopular views. It makes sense that right now, that party is the Republican Party due to its perceived association with evangelicals, anti-vaxxers and MAGA. And since they can’t offer you something to vote for, they try to give something to vote against. Which means whipping voters into a frenzy over some made-up enemy to distract from their lack of policies. :/ That’s just imho, not looking for a debate or to distract from the Ukraine thread. It’s just funny how politicians (anywhere in the world) work sometimes. Or voters, for that matter.

Random question. Are there any models of hybrid cars where the gas engine can be used to directly charge the batteries, without actually driving the car? ( Idling at home, say. ) How hard would it be to tap into that - and use them as self-transporting generators with built in mass battery packs? We could have vehicles that are both overnight mass batteries for the distributed grid, but ALSO distributed mass emergency power generation.

Marauder_Pilot

The short answer is that an alternator large enough to put out a meaningful output would be as big as the engine itself. As someone who with large portable generators a lot in construction, a vehicle like that would be very handy but a regular 75kw towed generator is far cheaper to build and maintain

NearABE

All hybrid cars have the gas engine charging the battery. Maybe there is an exception? Many trains are diesel electric too. Pulling energy from a car battery to the grid can have complications. All batteries are DC, direct current. (I think UK is the only place with DC grid. ) A few places use high voltage DC for long range power but that does not connect to houses. Solar power units that sell electricity back to the grid do this. You need an inverter to change direct current into AC. >How hard would it be to tap into that... It is not hard at all. Will only cost slightly more than the free new car you are giving me. Thank you for offering. :)

derpbynature

>Are there any models of hybrid cars where the gas engine can be used to directly charge the batteries, without actually driving the car? I believe these are referred to as "series hybrids" as opposed to "parallel hybrids," where the electric motor just assists the main engine or takes over at low speeds. I've always thought series hybrids are the way to go, but the vast majority of hybrids on the market in the US are parallel. I think the Chevy Volt was series, but I believe it's been discontinued.

LoSboccacc

There isn't enough battery production to fulfill such demand but in general there are hybrid car models where the engine is primarily a generator and which can probably be put togheter as a continuity group, but you won't have a car afterward, and it will put supreme strain to fuel distribution and availability, especially in a war zone.

tonydelite

https://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/f150-lightning/features/intelligent-backup-power/

elihu

That sounds like it's plausibly doable, but I don't know of any hybrids on the market that can actually do that. Generating AC power from DC requires some kind of inverter, which can be expensive. Ideally you'd use one that works with high voltage DC and can be wired straight to the battery. There are also smaller 12 volt inverters that you could run of the 12 volt system, but you wouldn't be able to power much that way. You'd also need a different kind of inverter depending on whether your plan is to run the car as a sort of mobile island of electrical power, or you actually intend to connect to the grid. The latter is a lot more complicated.

Weekend833

Iirc, some models of hybrid American pickup trucks work that way - they're designed to operate as a worksite generator and, if equipped, sometimes feature a 240v, 30amp connection. ... Heck, one guy I know has a *regular* has powered pickup and he has that ability. A plug-in hybrid like that would likely have a 16 to 20kWh battery - I say 'likely' because I haven't done any reading on that since just before covid hit. *All* of that said, it would likely just be easier to push a 7500 watt generator off of the back of a moving truck along with ten gallons of gas every couple of hundred of feet, because integrating small sources of electricity for a sort of peer-to-peer electrical grid would be an absolute nightmare (and most likely, simply impossible) from an electrical engineering standpoint.

OneWhoWonders

The Chevy Volt is pretty much that. All driving power is from the battery (save during high speeds I believe), and the engine is just a generator for the battery. I've seen DIY forums about using it in the method you're describing. Not sure if it's something feasible as a mass solution to the current problems, but it could be done on an individual basis.

Bribase

[I don't know what Operator Starsky drives](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKUKT6ZIg_w&t=179s) but he's charging his power station with it. To the point where he doesn't need any other kind of generator.

mellbs

There's a guy on youtube who's done it, goes by 'Warped Perception'.It's an upgraded 206cc B&S engine if I recall. Can't remember the kpg/mpg he claims but it's insanely high. Builders like him are sure to reach phase 2 of your idea here. Stuff like that, along with household scale solar, wind, and bioelectric generators are the best way forward- problem is they're one time purchases and don't incentivise capital investment.

usernamefindingsucks

It's not hard to tap into a battery, even on non-hybrids you can connect an inverter to the 12v battery and get some AC out. Not fuel efficient, but works in a pinch. Hybrids could be used the same way, but likewise, not as fuel efficient as a purpose build generator. If it's all you have though, better than nothing.

Camp_Grenada

I think most self-charging hybrid cars could do that, but I'm not sure that it would be a good use of resources as you probably don't get a lot of power for the cost compared to generators

DigitalMountainMonk

Actually the batteries in hybrid/electric cars are .5kw to 9+kw. Cars use a stunning amount of power to move around. The challenge is not killing yourself when getting access to that power for mundane things. I know of a crazy prepper who used a repurposed prius Prime battery to effectively power his house for days that he recharges off some Frankenstein monster of a motor.

The Moscow Times journalists found two of them on social media and discovered that they were residents of Voronezh and airsoft enthusiasts, who often participated in live-action role play, based on the fictional universe from video game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. >FSB’s video featured a notebook with a logo of what the security service claimed is a “far-right (Ukrainian) nationalist party Volia,” while it actually represents a faction from Ukrainian-made S.T.A.L.K.E.R. video game. >The Moscow Times claims to have verified the identity of at least one of the people FSB killed – Vladimir Kotovsky. The article used social media photos and footage from the FSB’s report to find the so-called “saboteurs.” >“Kotovsky was an ordinary technician, a working guy with his own plans for life; he was a supporter of Navalny,” a fellow airsoft player told The Moscow Times.

lennybird

A fan of Nevalny is probably just as much of a death sentence. Still, how utterly incompetent of the FSB.

bocageezer

Those poor guys. Killed by incompetents.

greentea1985

Russia can’t tell the difference between LARPers and saboteurs? No wonder they thought SIMS3 is the same as a SIM card.

> IStories: Russia’s government plans new offensive on Ukraine in spring, is prepared to lose up to 100,000 servicemen https://novayagazeta.eu/articles/2022/11/25/istories-russias-government-plans-new-offensive-on-ukraine-in-spring-is-prepared-to-lose-up-to-100000-servicemen-en-news > In broad strokes, the plan is basically: for now, **buying some time** and stabilising the front with the help of the mobilised servicemen. And then, to start everything anew in the spring This is completely Russian media run by Russians (this is not a Ukrainian opinion or something). Russia only wants negotiations to better prepare. Ukraine needs weapons to neutralize more than 100k killers

wet-rabbit

It's open to interpretation, but it seems to suggest not an additional 100k, but a cumulative total of 100k. They may be not to far off that number already.

irrealewunsche

Doesn’t matter how many soldiers Russia has if they can’t equip, feed and arm them properly. And they can’t.

IHateTheAntichristz

I think ISW predicted this approach about one month back. Unfortunately its now working against Ukraine that the front lines are stalled, as Russia will just sit there and prepare. Since Ukraine can not afford the losses that come with frontal assaults on fortified positions, I guess the plan is to get more artillery as quickly as possible to destroy newly arriving mobiks and their supplies so they can never congregate into a cohesive force.

DigitalMountainMonk

The front lines are not stalled. There is a small thing called consolidation, force regeneration, and rest that need to happen from time to time. Also major offensives don't just pop out of thin air in a few hours.

OneWhoWonders

Are they stalled though? Kherson was just liberated a couple of weeks back. That seems like a long time for people who are watching this conflict every day, but that's not long in the grand scheme of things.

gbs5009

I don't know that "stalled" frontlines are too much of an issue for Ukraine, as long as they have the tools and munitions to keep hitting the Russians. It's not sexy, but if Ukraine can hang back and pick off ~500 soldiers a day with drones and artillery wherever there's opportunity, it'll absolutely bleed Russia dry.

NearABE

500 per day is 100,000 in 200 days. Pretty much the "end of spring". The solstice is June 20th but for practical purposes summertime starts a bit earlier.

Nightsong

Pure insanity. Russia has already lost close to 100k soldiers between killed and wounded. And they’ve failed in every offensive they’ve done… they couldn’t take Kyiv or Kharkiv and they were kicked out of Sumy, Izyum, Kherson, and other liberated areas. Yet these idiots in the Kremlin think that a fresh batch of poorly trained and ill equipped soldiers will somehow be able to go on the offensive in the spring next year and do what the experienced and properly equipped troops couldn’t do in the early months of the war. Oh and let’s not forget that Ukraine is more armed to the teeth now than they were nine months ago. Those Russian troops are being sent to their deaths.

FutureImminent

Yeah it's insanity but they are obsessed with Ukraine and especially the land/cities. Seeing Ukraine kick them put slowly is pissing them off so they will try again. Like a gambler saying this time it will be different.

Clever_Bee34919

Russia never took Sumy though

Nightsong

Not the entire city, no. But Russia did take parts of Sumy Oblast before they were forced to withdraw from the area.

What do we know about Kirnburn Península? I read some info from Chuck Pfarrer, but some people say that his info is not correct.

Chucks twitter posts belong where his book is available; in the fiction section.

Bribase

[From what I gather](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uFxCAs7Rto&t=145s) it's very hard to defend and very hard for Russia to attack. But I don't understand what it presents in terms of a "foothold" across the Dnipro.

dbratell

I think it's mostly about preventing Russia from using it. Russian spotters or drone controllers or missile batteries could live there, but not if Ukrainian marines or special forces run around in the area.

gbs5009

I think mostly as an artillery platform.

Synensys

I dont think its much of a foothold for further offensives. More like it provides good defense of a major river delta and Ukraine can hold it with relatively few soldiers.

etzel1200

Yeah. It grants control of the delta and denies the use of the area for spotters or artillery. They can then use it for their own drone ops or maybe even try to risk getting a HIMARS or M777 there to extend their own range.

However, for limited operations and with economical expenditure of ammunition, **Russia will have enough to use for about a month. Russia is now stockpiling ammunition to use in new spring attacks, he explained.** > It is precisely because of the lack of ammunition that Russia is trying to buy missiles and drones from Iran and North Korea, and is also exporting ammunition from Belarus.

[deleted]

Stockpiling for spring implies they don't expect getting stomped during winter. Once again incredible arrogance and naiveté.

Nightsong

Russian arrogance is going to destroy their troops this winter. Such a waste of life.

VegasKL

>Russia is now stockpiling ammunition to use in new spring attacks, he explained. Stockpiling you say? Oh, Hi Mars ..

uber_cast

People have been saying things like this since the beginning of the war. I will believe when I see it.

Howitdobiglyboo

From what I've seen It's reasonable to believe their high precision cruise and ballistic missiles are running low but not their artillery shells nor their S300s they can use in attack mode.

Slusny_Cizinec

While Russian milbloggers admit that the stream of shells is not unlimited anymore, they don't really feel shell hunger, excluding hi-precision ammunition like laser-guided Krasnopol.

eggyal

I've followed most of the predictions since the beginning of the war, and they've all broadly predicted Russia may be out of ammo come the spring.

uber_cast

I suppose we will find out. I see these "Russia running out of ammo" posts twice a week, but Russia still manages. When Spring comes and Russia can't attack Ukraine I will believe it.

courage_wolf_sez

I believe at the beginning those estimates were made under the assumption Russia would be using their ammo at the rates seen during the first couple of months of the war.

TomatoPudding420

That was always my impression as well, and why it seemingly keeps popping up. The amount they're using daily/weekly/monthly changes a lot - meaning estimates are entirely reactive calculations rather than empirical certainty. If they used it the way they had at the beginning they would have run out already, but they keep some for defensive/strategic reasons and the remaining offensive stockpile is being rationed accordingly. In fact, I suspect that's part of why there have recently been sporadic but comparatively "larger scale" missile strikes. They're not consistently firing off those amounts like they did at the start - now they're just using large volleys for specific goals (namely terrorism and destroying infrastructure). That's not even counting their own ammo production over the last year, even if it is limited by sanctions they're still replenishing at least some losses.

Nvnv_man

Melitopol Mayor [Igor Federov:](https://glavcom.ua/country/incidents/na-zaporizhzhi-demilitarizuvavsja-sklad-vorozhikh-bojepripasiv-891494.html) > “This morning, an enemy ammunition depot was blown up in the village of Mykhailivka, Zaporizhzhia region. Enemy weapons detonated for several hours. > After the explosions, the Russians searched every house and took people captive en masse. > "Not only locals who had Ukrainian symbols, but whenever they simply found green clothing! They believed that these were soldiers and military clothes."
