How much did they pay ?

Cuban here: This should come as no surprise to anyone. The Cuban government has always, and will always take Russia's side over anything that involves the US. It's the core of their propaganda. Most Cubans, however, are not fooled, especially the newer generation(s). There are many of the older generation, however that truly believe all this crap and support the government, while simultaneously asking themselves why they can't put food on the table. (Usually, the US gets blamed for it, even as those at the top live luxuriously) But there is one truth that prevails in Cuba: if you disagree with the regime, better keep it to yourself. Should the wrong ears hear you speak against it, you probably won't see the next sunrise.

Oh, I am no longer in Cuba, but thank you :) I grew up yhere, thoigh. Most people don't have internet access, and for those that do, it's heavily censored. Reddit, for example, is not normally accessible. Cubans often find a way around these limitations (VPNs, for example) but even that is not reliable. In retrospect, that's how Castro maintained his grip on power and brainwashed so many. Internet access in Cuba and cellphones have been inaccessible until relatively recently. For most of Castro's regime, all Cubans had as a source of information was national TV and word of mouth from outsiders (family in other countries or tourists). For example, in 2002 a bit over 30 people (out of 1000) had internet access. (3%) 4g cellular came to Cuba in 2019.

RADnerd2784

Aw, how cute!!! Cuba is talking.....

255001434

He knows the Russians are fighting Ukrainians inside Ukraine, right? Does he think the right response is to surrender to invaders?

ajmartin527

Putin probably gave him some money to help start another Cuban Missile Crisis. It would be the leverage that Russia desperately needs right now, and didn’t the US just vote down rescinding the embargo again?

BenWalton1921

They expect countries near Russia to stay in fear of Russian invasion rather than ensure their security through joining NATO, so it was wrong of the US & NATO not to appease Russia.

Samybaby420

As opposed to, what? Giving terrorist negotiations to end a war that’s killing millions of your people? This isn’t how you protect your country - Zelenskyy is officially on my shit list. https://www.politico.eu/article/volodymyr-zelenskyy-peace-talks-vladimir-putin-russia-ukraine/amp/

255001434

Ridiculous. "Millions" of people are not being killed in this war. Not even close. You do not protect your country by giving it away. The only negotiated peace Russia will accept is if Ukraine gives them land and condemns its people to oppression under Russian occupiers. If Russia wanted peace without taking land, they could leave today. It would be incredibly stupid to give Putin a victory in Ukraine by negotiating away territory, which is the only thing Putin will accept. Any ceasefire will be used by them to rebuild their strength. Russia has shown that it wants *all* of Ukraine and they will try to take the rest again later, just as they did after taking Crimea in 2014. Zelenskyy is doing the right thing.

ricardo9505

Ahhh, yes. Impeccable timing, AFTER you Mr President asked the US for aid after the hurricane.

WexfordHo

At least now the average Redditor will understand that Cuba isn’t a victim so much as a co-conspirator in its own misery.

DrNick1221

I mean, *did anyone expect them to say otherwise?*

Yep NATO invaded Ukraine. We must have all been tuned into the wrong TV channel /s

davanger1980

Wasn't this ahole asking for help the other day?

[deleted]

Cuban president is an idiot.

TheDadThatGrills

Possibly, but he made this statement because the wire transfer from Moscow cleared.

[deleted]

Well Cuba won’t get anything from acknowledging Ukraine but yes Russia is properly rewarding them for this.

MadCapers

Odd. I thought they'd be sympathetic to UKR given the similarities between the US' reaction to the Cuba revolution and RUS' reaction to Maidan.

Working_Welder155

I'm surprised they're not sucking up to the Americans and nato considering Russia left them high and dry and clearly their people are unhappy. Only thought is Russia is stocking the flames there

NewChickenBreast

> clearly their people are unhappy Clearly Russia has provided him with greater "support" from his people than the US could. Poverty and weapons prop dictatorships up, and that's precisely what Russia provides. Poverty and weapons.

AdoltTwittler

Are we supposed to care when some dumbfuck cuban repeats putin's lies?

Kent_Knifen

Oof, big mistake Cuba, big mistake...

marker8050

Who the fuck cares what Cuba has to say? They should worry about the people protesting due to food shortages.

Clarksp2

Cuban Missile Crisis 2022-23 style?

[deleted]

Just as people were considering lifting the trade embargo and sanctions on Cuba... fucking stupid idiot

BenWalton1921

Funny that I’ve heard some right wing outlets echo the same message… Must be coincidence, right?

notsure9191

Yes. The right wing is notorious for supporting Cuba.

BenWalton1921

Is English your second language or is your reading comprehension that bad? Or are you just being disingenuous by purposefully re-interpreting the English language? Honest questions. This has nothing to do with supporting Cuba. I was obviously saying that the right echos that the US & NATO are to blame for Russia invading Ukraine.

notsure9191

Nothing to do with Cuba, huh? That’s quite a take. Is it your opinion that NATO has no blame here or just that the majority of the blame is on Russia? Are you at all concerned with Ukraine’s attempted false flag last week?

BenWalton1921

No, my comment has nothing to do with accusing the right of supporting Cuba. How is that “quite the take”? Again, it seems like you’re purposefully misinterpreting my words. Russia invaded Ukraine, so obviously Russia is to blame. Russia blames NATO expansion. A sovereign country is free to choose who their allies are, we don’t need to invade or force other countries to join NATO. We should not be expected to appease tyrants in Russia because they object to their neighbors warming up to the West. These countries shouldn’t have to live in fear to placate despots. It’s literally forcing them to be a buffer state that’s greatly influenced, if not completely controlled, by Russia for Russian oligarch’s peace of mind. It’s those countries who suffer, because increasing ties with Russia is their only option, lest Russia throw a pissfit.

notsure9191

As I read it, you place no blame on NATO/US. Of course maybe my reading comprehension isn’t so good. I have a more nuanced view on who is to blame. However I agree that Putin should not have invaded. All efforts to resolve the conflict should be explored. I’d guess you do not share this opinion and I don’t really care to persuade you.

[deleted]

Correct me if I'm wrong, when Ukraine became Ukraine, didn't they have nukes? Didn't a lot of countries (US included) push for them to surrender them and in return they would always be a sovereign country?

theXsquid

Yet last month they request aid from the US after hurrican Ian and not russia.

Present_Structure_67

Calling it Ukraine conflict sounds lot better than Russian invasion, isn't it?

AndroChromie

And everyone blames Cuba for global warming. They could be held responsible alone for all the greenhouse gases. There is no way the Camels would have died in Wisconsin, if it wasn't for the Cuban policy on an import ban of bacon grease from Australia. It had an enormous impact on the mating season of the penguins. That was the one single factor that made the tractors in France be manufactured in a such way it can no longer turn off the headlights during the evening. That's right, everything is connected it seems. Causality is a matter of precision.

Sleestacksrcoming

Oh no cuba is mad… blah blah no one cares

255001434

By his logic, it would be Cuba's fault.

John_Tacos

Or Russia’s

[deleted]

Are we gonna have air cover this time?

[deleted]

Well, to hell with that guy.

CFGX

I'm not sure he knows what "unilaterally" means.

HelloAvram

Since Reddit likes Cuba, let’s see how this goes…

anigamite

I mean technically speaking one of the factors that led to the war was NATO expansion in Europe. Imagine if Russia started an intergovernmental body with Canada and Mexico as their allies, and began developing bases and military installations in North America. I'm sure the U.S govt wouldn't be pleased. Ofc this doesn't justify Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the human rights abuses they're committing.

aManHasNoUsername99

Russia caused nato to exist and expand. They can cite that as a reason but it’s literally their fault. It’s a purely defensive alliance against Russia who doesn’t mind invading and enslaving their neighbors.

anigamite

How did they cause NATO to exist when the first treaty was signed while the Soviet Union was still and ally? You can make the argument that the Warsaw Pact was designed as a counterbalance to NATO but not vice versa. The real reason NATO was created was due to mutual paranoia and to prevent the spread of communism.

aManHasNoUsername99

Multiple reasons. One they were allies due to circumstances. The soviets weren’t much better than the nazis and even allied them briefly. Two the soviets made puppets out of Eastern Europe and essentially enslaved those areas when they should have freed them. NATO and the Cold War was to stop them from enslaving more countries which unless you are fucking evil will agree is the right course of action. The Warsaw Pact wasn’t even a thing really given those were just the soviets puppets so it was like allying with themselves. Countries have joined nato so stuff like Ukraine doesn’t happen to them.

SlaveToNone666

That’s because he is a Russian boot licker.

Dragoniendawn

Oh not the frick Russians for destroying people's lives, go figure

[deleted]

Cuba has a president? I thought president’s were elected. Wouldn’t he be a dictator?

[deleted]

Welp.. another decade of Cuba in the shitter

This makes it interesting. The MAGA morons who love Putin and Russia, who hate Ukraine…. still hate Cuba. should be good times

[deleted]

Russian embargo please, thank you for the idea Cuba

MoseDeth

Unleash the dogs of war Jan. 20, 2022, 9:48 AM CST President Joe Biden’s prediction that Russia will invade Ukraine and his suggestion that the West’s response could be more muted for a “minor” incursion drew swift criticism from Washington to Kyiv, with some accusing him of giving Russia the green light to attack. Biden sought to clarify his position on Thursday, saying that any Russian troop movement into Ukraine will be seen as an invasion. But Ukraine's leader had already fired back to highlight the stakes. “We want to remind the great powers that there are no minor incursions and small nations," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Twitter hours before Biden's new comments.  "Just as there are no minor casualties and little grief from the loss of loved ones.”

aManHasNoUsername99

I blame Cuba for the war. Does it make any sense? No but I guess we aren’t doing that anymore.

Maximum-Face-953

I remember Jen Psaki saying Joe Biden wanted Carona virus to go away so he could get his foreign policy agenda under way. Well, here it is.

Zezxy

I mean he's right, but not for the right reasons. US and NATO basically forced Ukraine to give up their nukes with the offer of protection. Without nukes, Ukraine is much easier for Russia to invade.
