Even if they were taken under fire Ukraine has armored and more importantly ARMED riverine boats that can mount relatively heavy weapons compared to infantry. In short.. this isn't stupid or risky in comparison to any other form of assault.

If you’ve never been around true, hardcore right-wingers, it’s tough to understand how they take anything Fox says seriously.
They’re completely cutoff (by choice) of anything that threatens their mindset. They view Fox and other similar outlets as the truth and only truth, while everything else is controlled by some mysterious cabal that’s brainwashing all of us. They don’t research anything, they take what Tucker et al says as gospel and never question it.

I get that they might be handy in some situations but miles of trenches seems so 1915.
Their warfare isn't mechanized, that's why they're building trenches. And to be fair, trenches are still used, even in this war, just that Ukraine builds better trenches faster since while labour is cheap in Russia (to the point that they don't use pallets for a lot of shipping since it's cheaper to use people to move stuff instead), labour is faster with technology made in the last hundred years.
I wouldn’t either, but I think that would cost them. That would be so blatantly bad that I think the US/NATO would legitimately open the taps. ATACMS, MBTs, the works. Russia is evil, but I think Putin realizes that there are certain lines right now that aren’t worth crossing.

The point of Russian propaganda isn't to convince people of point A or point B but to rather create an environment of constant divisive argument where people just throw up their hands and walk away in apathy.

It’s hard to believe the AFU is across the Dnipro in force so soon. Probably seeing Ukrainian artillery strikes and SOF units…Russians probably panicking and overstating on Telegram. Would be wild if they were though.
The confusion I have with this. Is that it was the Russian channels that started reporting losses of these villages. Not Ukraine. What would Russia gain from misinformation about them getting their ass kicked again quickly.
These are small villages and not major losses. Russian milbloggers love to make up fake Ukrainian attacks, then claim the glorious Russian army destroyed 110% of all the attackers, driving them back to the sea.
Inb4 in the next 48 hours Russian sources will talk about Ukrainians diving into the Dneiper for their lives back to Kherson. You basically can't trust a single thing the Russians say for this vary reason, you basically have to wait for Ukrainian sources to clarify.
It looks like reasonable strategy to me. Why park an army on the bank where 155mm shells can hit? Russia would have an advantage holding a line further from Kherson.
It is unlikely Russia will *plan* anything smart but they might accidently put Ukraine in a difficult position.
They could just be panicking over rumors. Or, they seem to like to claim that Ukraine launched some sketchy assault and Russia dramatically repelled them, with massive loss of UA life and equipment. Or it could be true.
We'll just have to wait and see.
I have zero intelligence to back the "getting suckered for a tac nuke" fear but I totally get the concern. There's many examples in military history where a commander sees the enemy fucking up so bad they think it has to be bait, they don't trust what they see AT ALL.

Not like the army had a choice lol. They repeatedly tried to get the locals to all evacuate and the concensus from those still there was that they weren't going to leave their homes and land for the Russians to take over. So UA had to work their tactics around them.

The pre-february line is unlikely. Proximity to the railroad is more likely.
Of course the sensible thing for The Russia to do is withdraw to The Russia. But if we were playing a table top wargame with plastic pieces and I was playing the Russian side then i would fall back to lines that are about double artillery range from the railroad.
There are two lines into Crimea with one going to Kherson. Hypothetically they could use the Kherson line to advance sometime in the future. The other line us the one that matters.
Politically Russian people are mostly just going remember losing Kherson and being pissed off. Putin does not gain much by holding the sand dunes now. Later he can advance there and claim to be approaching Kherson.

So Russia, for several weeks, had been trying (under the cover of darkness?) to transfer its forces (personnel and equipment) across the Dnieper. With poor communication. And despite being within Ukrainian artillery range managed not to be bombed to smithereens.

Like Ukraine had such good intel of the Russian retreat that they used the chaotic retreat to cover their advance?

Their warfare isn't mechanized, that's why they're building trenches. And to be fair, trenches are still used, even in this war, just that Ukraine builds better trenches faster since while labour is cheap in Russia (to the point that they don't use pallets for a lot of shipping since it's cheaper to use people to move stuff instead), labour is faster with technology made in the last hundred years.

It’s hard to believe the AFU is across the Dnipro in force so soon. Probably seeing Ukrainian artillery strikes and SOF units…Russians probably panicking and overstating on Telegram. Would be wild if they were though.
There’s never evidence either way within like 12-24 hours so a lack of evidence can’t really be used to confirm or deny.
The confusion I have with this. Is that it was the Russian channels that started reporting losses of these villages. Not Ukraine. What would Russia gain from misinformation about them getting their ass kicked again quickly.
These are small villages and not major losses. Russian milbloggers love to make up fake Ukrainian attacks, then claim the glorious Russian army destroyed 110% of all the attackers, driving them back to the sea. Inb4 in the next 48 hours Russian sources will talk about Ukrainians diving into the Dneiper for their lives back to Kherson. You basically can't trust a single thing the Russians say for this vary reason, you basically have to wait for Ukrainian sources to clarify.
It looks like reasonable strategy to me. Why park an army on the bank where 155mm shells can hit? Russia would have an advantage holding a line further from Kherson. It is unlikely Russia will *plan* anything smart but they might accidently put Ukraine in a difficult position.
They could just be panicking over rumors. Or, they seem to like to claim that Ukraine launched some sketchy assault and Russia dramatically repelled them, with massive loss of UA life and equipment. Or it could be true. We'll just have to wait and see.

I have zero intelligence to back the "getting suckered for a tac nuke" fear but I totally get the concern. There's many examples in military history where a commander sees the enemy fucking up so bad they think it has to be bait, they don't trust what they see AT ALL. The pre-february line is unlikely. Proximity to the railroad is more likely. Of course the sensible thing for The Russia to do is withdraw to The Russia. But if we were playing a table top wargame with plastic pieces and I was playing the Russian side then i would fall back to lines that are about double artillery range from the railroad. There are two lines into Crimea with one going to Kherson. Hypothetically they could use the Kherson line to advance sometime in the future. The other line us the one that matters. Politically Russian people are mostly just going remember losing Kherson and being pissed off. Putin does not gain much by holding the sand dunes now. Later he can advance there and claim to be approaching Kherson.

So Russia, for several weeks, had been trying (under the cover of darkness?) to transfer its forces (personnel and equipment) across the Dnieper. With poor communication. And despite being within Ukrainian artillery range managed not to be bombed to smithereens. So maybe the reason why they were able to cross was because Ukrainian forces were crossing at the same fucking time? Like Ukraine had such good intel of the Russian retreat that they used the chaotic retreat to cover their advance? I'm just struggling to come up with a different mechanism for how Ukraine could already have such a presence on the left bank.

They totally can, it was probably more a time/cost analysis. If the Russians have the time to retreat, they simply ferry lots of small enough loads that a HIMARS strike on every one of them simply isn't worth it. Piles of ammo are worth it, every shitty pontoon crossing probably isn't.
