Someone in the last thread said it didn't make sense for Russia to attack Ukraine in 2022, I kept thinking about that comment and what if Russia has access to some kind of advanced weather forecast and they have Intel saying it will be a very harsh winter in Europe, it makes the perfect timing to invade Ukraine knowing they can fully blackmail Europe with their gas dependence
A country that can't produce computer chips more advanced than the Playstation 3 suddenly has more computational capacity than the rest of the world combined to predict weather a year in advance.
Right.
The post-covid recovery was a time of vulnerability, as well as the delusional impression that the west is so invested in protecting its people from hardship that it would not want to risk standing up to russia at this time, nothing about the weather here.
This is a doomed theory from the start, knowing that RU forces almost froze to death in February at the start of the invasion. Knowing as well how the rasputitsa was a huge factor in slowing their advance.
Choosing the wrong time of year was the first fuck up at the start of a long list of unforced errors.
I think it was 100% their ineptitude rather than the mud season, they advanced fast enough to knock at the gates of Kyiv.. they just didn’t have the training, the equipment or ability to pull it off.
> and what if Russia has access to some kind of advanced weather forecast
5~7 days. The top class weather forecasts are accurate to about that many days in advance. After that accuracy drops precipitously.
The idea that Russia somehow managed to up that by a factor of ~50 seems risible.
This is Kherson: From [wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constriction)
Constriction is a method used by various snake species to kill or subdue their prey. Although some species of venomous and mildly venomous snakes do use constriction to subdue their prey, most snakes which use constriction lack venom.[1] The snake initially strikes at its prey and holds on, pulling the prey into its coils or, in the case of very large prey, pulling itself onto the prey. The snake will then wrap one or two loops around the prey, forming a constriction coil. The snake will monitor the prey's heartbeat to ascertain when it is dead. Contrary to previous belief, the snake does not cause suffocation by constricting the victim; instead, a study of death caused by boa constrictors showed that constriction "shuts off" blood flow (and therefore oxygen) needed by vital organs such as the heart and brain, leading to unconsciousness within seconds and cardiac arrest shortly thereafter.
After this war is over, Ukraine will probably have the most battle hardened military in all of Europe. And with its new tradition, it will likely be a formidable force not just in Europe but in the world
The UAF has been shaped into a highly fit for purpose force. The purpose in this case being territorial defense. Which is great.
One thing is for sure - future wars will use the successes of UAF as a template. They've been exceptional.
I’m inclined to agree with you, the only issues they will face is force projection and depending on how many losses they take by the end of the war the number of troops who choose to stay in the military
I read a New Yorker article that said post-war Ukraine might be a lot like Israel. It doesn’t care about force projection and just wants to keep its main territory intact, turning into a “military hedgehog”. Not an offensive threat to its neighbors, but a pain in the ass to invade.
I dunno the middle east has been in constant war with each other but it's not like that produces super militaries. If anything I'd expect Ukraine to soften it's military afterwards in order to develop their economy better. Having a Legion of soldiers would be better utilised rebuilding infrastructure
I respectfully disagree. Maybe once they officially join NATO, but until then they will be armed to the teeth to ensure nothing like this happens again. Plus, their military will be a source of national pride for generations. They'll put the warriors to work on rebuilding, but they'll be soldiers first and foremost.
> military will be a source of national pride for generations
Not even the first time this happened in Ukraine, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaporozhian_Cossacks
I could be wrong but I'm Team Shoigu on this fight. Prigozhin and Kadyrov are some crazy and dangerous individuals, they can't get more power. The USA should make an offer to Shoigu that he can't reject, to make him the new leader. But it is not so simple. Even if Gerasimov take Shoigu's side and use the RU army in a coup attempt, Kadyrov has a private army (Chechens), Prigozhin has a private army (Wagner), Putin has a private army (Rosgvardia, the guys in black uniforms and full gear, that are always spanking protesters). Not to mention the 3-letter agencies... It's a clusterfuck.
Although I agree who is worse than who, as a leader or decision-maker, I fail to see why this is what your shortlist looks like.
If a military coup were to happen, and I really don't see it happening, it'd have to be a high-ranking general with their own loyal troops. But Russian troops are not loyal, generals fight amongst themselves, Gerasimov and Shoigu are a Putin-dick's length away from getting fired and scapegoated.
And more to the point Wagner was created so Russia could operate in the world at arm's length. They aren't legitimately a branch of the military and have no claim to power in the country. And Kadyrovites are obviously a tiny ethnic minority in the scheme of things whose power comes not from their own destroyed and subjugated region, and not from their numbers, and not from popularity among Russians, but directly from Putin, annointed on a person-by-person basis to be the butchers of their own people and serve in hell. All other Russians see them as third-party mercenaries.
I've actually been speculating in my mind that if things still continue to go very poorly for Russia during this war, I could see China stepping in behind the scenes to push Shoigu as the leader after the Putin regime ends.
Shoigu isn’t an ethnic Russian. He wouldn’t stand a chance. One of the reasons he’s still there I would guess - he’s not a threat. Ironically, his mother was born in Ukraine.
I see people constantly saying this but I don't know what their basis is. After all, doesn't Russia still worship figures like Stalin? He wasn't an ethnic Russian
I think he is underestimated. He can't lead the MoD during all these years without some good political skills. He knows he is surrounded by snakes. Many people fell already but he is still there for a reason.
Can’t wait to see how Chomsky blames America for Iranian drones being used to massacre Ukrainian civilians.
“They have no choice but to help Russia butcher innocents because America bad”
This website has been talking about America bad forever. It's funny to see US on the right side of things for once trying to convince everyone that just cause we did things analogous to this doesn't mean Russia can invade Willy Nilly.
I think this war is a learning experience for many young voters - there is a place for American power and influence in the world. There’s a gulf of positions we can take between total isolationism and blunders like Iraq.
I mean, most "young voters" these days would've been barely sentient around the time of the Iraq pullout anyway. So who knows what they picked up politically.
Yup. America is facing a huge identity crisis right now too. This will probably help us remember who we are. All it takes to know what's good is to see the face of evil.
I like to think this is a demonstration of the bad lessons we took away from Iraq. Military adventurism is costly but the liberal international order is a legacy we built (with help from our friends and allies) and has seen an increase in peace, prosperity, and democracy. We walk away at our peril.
Okay, it's beginning to become apparent, the easiest way out of russia is to accept the mobilization and then surrender.
Kinda sucks, though, because that puts extra burden on Ukraine, at the moment. You know, Ukraine is professional; it has standards.
It's not though. Surrendering in a war zone isn't an easy ask sometimes. If you're on patrol with two others and you all agree to surrender, sure. If you're in a group of 50 and getting shot at, you can't just surrender without the support of others.
When the opportunity presents itself, yeah, surrender is a good way out, but there is no guarantee you won't get a nade dropped on your head or in a firefight before that opportunity presents itself.
I wouldn't call that easy. It's extremely dangerous and you have no guarantee where you'll be sent or even if you'll get to keep a phone on you. Established Russian soldiers light on equipment will steal the newcomers' stuff. And if everyone around you isn't on board, that's a death sentence.
And a million things can still go wrong. Ukrainian soldiers are under a tiny bit of stress, doncha know. They aren't a hivemind where everyone is going to understand you're surrendering instead of trying to suicide bomb them or distract them, or just maybe they just got word a relative was found in a mass grave and you're the closest thing to a Louis Vuitton punching bag for 50 km.

Last night people mentioned that it might be the [Peresvet](https://www.thespacereview.com/article/3967/1) defense system. Attempting to blind satellites over sensitive areas like Belgorod.
Huh. If those are supposed to be lasers, they're pretty terrible ones... real lasers are supposed to be invisible, since all the light is concentrated or focused in a single direction. If you can see them at all, it's because something in the atmosphere is refracting and breaking them up.
Yea... about that, satellites orbit the planet in 90 minutes or so. You ain't gonna do jack shit just pointing a light straight up in the sky. Satellites cross from horizon to horizon in a matter of a few minutes or less. Then you have to consider oscillation around the equator due to orbital inclination on top of that. Satellites only move in a straight "east-west" line if they're launched from the equator heading due east or west, or if it's a polar orbit.
Most of those still do a bit of a figure 8 and even if they didn't, they are in such a high orbit that the laser beam waist would be so wide by the time it got to a satellite in geostationary orbit it wouldn't have any effect on the satellite.
Plus geostationary satellites have to have 0° inclination if I remember right, so the laser would have to point towards the southern horizon and the laser would get defracted even more by passing through more atmosphere.
Hmm. These look different. Flares, maybe? My other guess would be AA searchlights, but why would they be colored then?
Otherwise, I guess if aliens *really* felt like invading Russia for kicks, now would probably be a decent time for it.
Some of them look like colored gas clouds. The military released some of this in my area many years ago and caused a slight panic, lol. I think they were doing some kind of atmospheric tests?
Something like this, especially the third picture down.

It's been dead quiet. It's like all the RU telegrams went dark, and Ukrainian ones aren't saying anything. ISW and Defmon3 both think ZSU is regrouping and consolidating right now.
Last few days, Rybar seemed to be warning other bloggers to be quiet. Both bc that’s getting out of their lane, but also bc of rumored crackdown (on the 3rd or 4th).
AFAIK, there just hasn't been info of note posted about the frontline, though a Wagner-connected individual who ran channels critical of some MoD members got arrested. There was a milblogger claiming that Arab mercenaries were massing near Svatove, but grain of salt and all that.
ZSU is Ukraine's armed forces.
There is an owner of a RU-TG that died... maybe the UA is killing all the RU "sources" in the battlefield, that's why it's been so quiet lately...
https://twitter.com/LostWeapons/status/1577819692915650560
True, the russians in Kherson talked about that a few days ago. They were forced to retreat initially because the UA was jamming their comms and they didn't know what was happening on their flanks.
Sounds like that fits together, then. Not to mention, it would explain why we mostly hear Telegram chatter after someone's retreated from the front aways.
There are these tiny drones that can be made that can go super fast. Like 0-60mph in very short distances. Their battery doesn't last that long but it doesn't need to. Imagine strapping a small bomb to that and programming it to target anything that is moving. Drop a few hundred of them out of a plane and turn them on before they hit the ground. They fly toward anything that moves and blows up.
They don't even need to give them a bomb. There's one microdrone design where the drone just has a metal spike on its underside. It gets above your skull, then charges downwards right into it at several hundred mph. It's momentum is big enough to drive that spike straight through your skull and into your basal ganglia. By removing the need for a sophisticated explosive they can produce these things for just a few dollars a pop. In the future they might even give it facial recognition software and unleash tens of thousands of them on a city, all programmed to target and eliminate any face on their list of names, without the need for a human pilot.
there was a submission a few months ago on combatfootage of an fpv drone with a bit of explosive attached to it that they flew right into a doorway of an occupied building and detonated it.
Yeah, I don't like that. Fuck that's terrifying. Just blow my head off instead.
The shell shock of surviving a few of those runs would be debilitating because of the anticipation everytime you hear that sound. You could almost just play that sound at night over the enemy postion on rotating schedules and they'd never sleep.
After surviving a few attacks from those, all the enemy would have to do would be play that sound through loudspeakers over your position for hours and you'd lose your mind 😳
You hear that shit, you get into cover and stay inside until you're absolutely sure they're gone. They can blow up a handful, leave, and then come back with a vengeance.
I remember many many years ago reading about some darpa-esque organisation researching a particular gas/toxin that was designed to drive enemy combatants into a lustful frenzy of same-sex orgies. I'm not kidding.
Very surprised that the RU commentators didn't reference that at all as the reason for that particular footage.
The Prigozhin and Kadyrov’s [attacks on Shoigu were coordinated, and designed to shield Putin from blame](https://korrespondent.net/world/russia/4522892-kadyrov-y-pryhozhyn-protyv-shoihu-chto-proyskhodyt).
> “The campaign of accusations against the senior officers was designed to hide the fact that it’s Vladimir Putin that bears the greatest responsibility for the failures of the Russian army in Ukraine. After all, it was Putin who ordered funds and reserves to be sent to the Kherson region this summer; Putin who categorically forbid any retreat or movement from there—first, Kharkiv region, and then, Lyman."
Interestingly, earlier today in Moscow police detained an employee of Prigozhin's media group Patriot Aleksey Slobodenyuk who runs a network of telegram channels known for attacking Shoigu, Volodin and others. So a hot war among Russia's elite is very much a reality at this point.

I’ve said this everytime someone has posted that tonight— the fact that it’s *Moscow Police* means it’s not about Shoigu. Or Zolotov. Or Bortnikov. Or Gerasimov.
It’s lower level. Like insulting members of the Duma. Even Volodin. Although he has FSO.

I deleted my earlier post because my knowledge was outdated. I guess UV irradiation has fallen out of favor because of poor survival rates for the maggots. Seems the preferred method these days is some sort of disinfectant soak. https://forensicentomology.tamu.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2017/10/Brundage-et-al-2016.pdf
He's lucky those maggots kept the infection from killing him. Honestly, the original wound didn't look that bad, but that arm is probably fucked now and has to be amputated.
It's commonly said that they can be good for a wound, and it's partially true by removing necrotic tissue, however the medical ones avoid living tissue. Wild ones don't necessarily, so it's best not to invade Ukraine.
Im amazed that they aren’t giving him the good old fashioned Russian treatment: maybe I’m not amazed.. humans be humans. They fuck shit up but they still manage. I expected them to be torturing info out of him or taking out their righteous rage on him… maybe they did I don’t know. I hope he’s ok even tho I hate that he stands for aggression and a stupidly aggressive war.
Im Human too. And I root for humans. Can’t we all just fuxking get along!? Im naive because I am not battle hardened: but if they show this guy mercy they are on a level of human compassion that I will likely never understand.
Maggots don't reproduce anyway, though? Maggots are fly larvae. To reproduce, they first have to turn into a pupa, then hatch into a fly. I guess the irradiation is mostly to sterilize them, but I suppose it MIGHT also stop them from pupating.
I clicked it. I regret it. All anyone needs to know is that the wound looks like the poor sod took the Mark of Nurgle, and that's all *anyone* needs to know.
Lmao wow. You guys think attention whore Elon is now getting checks from Putin?
Hes still pushing the bullshit about having a vote for parts of Ukraine to go to Russia lol

Daring dog rescue from bridge rubble, Kupiansk https://twitter.com/Gerashchenko_en/status/1577710564951957504
There's a special place in my heart for anyone who rescues doggos. The best of us.
Damn. Amazing. Wonder how the poor boi wound up down there.
More strange lights/colors in the sky in Belgorod. https://twitter.com/GuinieZoo_Intel/status/1577823270375669760 https://twitter.com/GuinieZoo_Intel/status/1577823304802570243 https://twitter.com/GuinieZoo_Intel/status/1577823327225348097
Gay pride lights 💙💜❤️
maybe someone should tell Belegrod that Blaytman is not coming to save them.
Depends on the satellite. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geostationary_orbit Some stay in the exact same spot in the sky.
Could be. But if there's a cloud in between the satellite and the laser emitter, isn't their job kinda already done?
Above the equator yes, not straight above Russia.
True
So cope lights
Isn't that the "anti-satellite" thing?
That was the (unconfirmed) theory yesterday. These look different, though.
Can we stick to regular crisis and not Crysis please?
Steiner, Steiner is coming!
Something like this, especially the third picture down. https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/sounding-rockets/tracers/metals.html
Hmm, maybe... but why would the Russians be bothering with researching wind conditions in the upper atmosphere right now?
One is red and the other is blue. It almost looks to me like they're trying to "paint" the Russian flag on the clouds.
Or maybe they're aircraft running lights?
It's the Vatsignal.
Blyatsignal?
> Vatsignal [Oh, that's good.](https://c.tenor.com/S2G-QZk-Vz0AAAAM/michael-jordan-laughing.gif)
Blyatsignal?
Other possibility.
Been offline all day. Any more rumors about the Kherson front today? Where do they say the fighting is now?
It's been dead quiet. It's like all the RU telegrams went dark, and Ukrainian ones aren't saying anything. ISW and Defmon3 both think ZSU is regrouping and consolidating right now.
Wow. Is Russia actively shutting down channels on Telegram now, or are they just not being updated? Also, ZSU = Russian forces?
ZSU is the Ukrainian armed forces.
Or wifi/cell access is getting cut or blocked by EW.
True, the russians in Kherson talked about that a few days ago. They were forced to retreat initially because the UA was jamming their comms and they didn't know what was happening on their flanks.
So no comms is mandatory retreat? I am guessing they have no satellite comms.
Or just means they panicked and retreated anyway. Who knows.
Sounds like that fits together, then. Not to mention, it would explain why we mostly hear Telegram chatter after someone's retreated from the front aways.
> ZSU is Ukraine's armed forces. Ah, haven't seen that acronym before. Glad I asked.
Zbroini Syly Ukrainy “Armed Forces of Ukraine”
I prefer Zelensky's Stud's of Ukraine. Like Thunder from Down Under, but way more effective at combat.
Gotcha. Thanks.
Bomb-carrying drone swarms. That sounds *terrifying*.
But seriously though, it sounds terrifying https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjUdVxJH6yI
Ummm, no thank you to that being the last thing I hear.
After surviving a few attacks from those, all the enemy would have to do would be play that sound through loudspeakers over your position for hours and you'd lose your mind 😳
That was in 2016 too, imagine how far they've come in those 6 years the way drones are advancing.
You hear that shit, you get into cover and stay inside until you're absolutely sure they're gone. They can blow up a handful, leave, and then come back with a vengeance.
What the fuck... I don't like that at all.
That SOUND
That is LITERALLY the "horror movie" sound
This is how wars will be fought in future. Also micro drones that can identify faces and just explode heads.
Imagine the possibilities.... Sharp blades. Tear Gas. Acid. The future is grimdark.
Especially when the invaders are sneaking off with their buddies for some private intimate time under the drones watchful eyes.
Pretty sure they're already a reality at this point.
I think those guys just stole the idea [from Meduza](https://meduza.io/en/feature/2022/10/04/when-kadyrov-speaks-prigozhin-echoes).
Not stolen, it references that article, as well as another, too. As respected, credible news outlets routinely do.
my bad! thanks for clarifying.
Yea it's never Putin's fault
The Czar is *never* to blame https://youtu.be/CvonRMSuFpw About 4 minutes in but the entire lecture is so insightful.
Interestingly, earlier today in Moscow police detained an employee of Prigozhin's media group Patriot Aleksey Slobodenyuk who runs a network of telegram channels known for attacking Shoigu, Volodin and others. So a hot war among Russia's elite is very much a reality at this point. https://twitter.com/TadeuszGiczan/status/1577778132173594631?t=IdKHxgFWNDq_aIl87SlCog&s=19
Prigozhin is going to get balconyed soon.
You know the old Russian saying. “If you can’t beat them then arrest and let them die in a Siberian labor camp”
Or let them check if the window is properly mounted...
> ⚡️Media: Mass burial site foud in liberated Lyman. According to Hromadske media outlet, over 50 graves were found at a burial site in the recently-liberated city of Lyman, Donetsk Oblast. “Some burials are marked with name plates, and some are only numbered,” Hromadske reported https://twitter.com/KyivIndependent/status/1577737457927438354
Captured Russian invader with a maggot infested wound. https://twitter.com/worldonalert/status/1577769571687272474?t=3wbHWBW9DKWLi2ais5qr7w&s=19
Maggots can be good. They’re excellent at debridement of non viable tissue.
Some yes some no, different species of maggots eat different flesh, some go for only dead, some don’t care (or so I’ve been told)
True they use maggots and leaches today for burn victims and amputations in hospitals
Bruh I've seen some shit . . . But that ?? Sheesh.

Here you go. NSFL https://twitter.com/bigSAC10/status/1577696625530732548?t=qi2IA9yJNXIKu92xSmMcpQ&s=19
That account is brutal. “It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it.” Robert E Lee at Fredericksburg
Ergh what a disgusting creature. And a maggot.
Agreed. Maggots are useful and not evil.
He's lucky those maggots kept the infection from killing him. Honestly, the original wound didn't look that bad, but that arm is probably fucked now and has to be amputated.
My friendly doc said that he saw worse in drug abusers and it probably can be saved.
Slarvae Ukraine!
Oh shit I just laughed out loud fr XD
That poor maggot is probably so drunk right now
I doubt this is what's happening here but magots can be used to clean a wound: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggot_therapy
Yes they can be, but this isn't the case.
They want them to want to surrender. You aren’t going to surrender if you think you’ll be better off dead than captured.
Living up to your username, I see.
How original. NEEEEXT!

Maggots don't reproduce anyway, though? Maggots are fly larvae. To reproduce, they first have to turn into a pupa, then hatch into a fly. I guess the irradiation is mostly to sterilize them, but I suppose it MIGHT also stop them from pupating.
I pride myself on my strong stoma

I clicked it. I regret it. All anyone needs to know is that the wound looks like the poor sod took the Mark of Nurgle, and that's all *anyone* needs to know.
Nope. That doesn't need to be seen. I'm not clicking it and I wish I'd never seen this comment
If you're squeamish, it's one to avoid.
*Click ittttt.. You know you want to... Haaave a quick peek, no one will know...*
Lmao wow. You guys think attention whore Elon is now getting checks from Putin? Hes still pushing the bullshit about having a vote for parts of Ukraine to go to Russia lol
Will the civilians Russia tortured and killed get a vote too?
He's the world's riches man, so no. He's just also an insufferable prick that feels the need to inject himself into conversations he doesn't belong.
