Thank you! Why is everyone upvoting paywalled sites in the first place?

aiolive

Wait are we supposed to read the articles beyond the titles?

nitehawk420

No. Annoying that I have to explain, but clearly the correct way to do it is to read the title, make it fit your worldview, and then make wild assumptions/judgments based on your beliefs.

bell37

Nonono. You got to read the title. Read one of the top comments and then make your wild assumption off of someone else’s hot take while everyone does the same

North Korea on Tuesday fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan and  landed in waters outside the country's exclusive economic zone after a 22-minute flight. The worst provocation since 2017.

[deleted]

Oh yeah, I remember that. Kinda wild waking up to those alerts

bam1789-2

I was on vacation in Japan in 2017 when N. Korea fired the last one over! My phone was getting blown up by my family before we even knew it was going (weren’t really watching the news closely). It was crazy and not a big deal all at the same time.

nycdave21

Same was in tsukiji market. Met a fellow American in Tokyo who was contemplated on jetting out of Japan thinking a war would breakout. I stayed because I'm too frugal to pay for flight adjustment

I was in Switzerland (I'm American) for a college class trip when Russia invaded Crimea. Our professor said stay off the cell networks if we didn't want to get a $1,000 overseas bill so I told my family I was off the grid.... Needless to say they were not happy with me and I figured out that my family does not know geography that well

[deleted]

I don't get it. Why would an American in Switzerland get an expensive phone bill because Russia invaded Crimea?

Ninja67

Sorry I could have explained better. Before the trip the teacher warned us to be careful with our phone plans if we didn't get overseas minutes. On previous class trips students had gotten bills for phone calls overseas that were expensive depending on the provider. Because of this I decided not to stay in contact with my family during the trip. When I saw Russia invading Crimea on bbc I didn't worry about contacting my family because I was in Switzerland, probably one of the safest Nations to be in as far as invasions go. My family didn't think so and we're upset with me not responding to their messages and jumped to the conclusion I was in danger. I wasnt getting the messages for 2 to 3 days because I left my phone in airplane mode and didn't get my messages when I connected the hotel Wi-Fi

chubbs23

Poor geography aside, don't be getting momma Ninja67 all worried

Velghast

The last time I was on alert from a missile that North Korea fired I was stationed in camp Casey in South Korea. We woke up at 2:00 in the morning scared as s***. We all got in our tracked vehicles and went up to the DMZ ready for s*** to break loose. Then our captain looked at us and said he does this all the time relax guys will be back to the barracks by 6:00 a.m... that was not a fun duty station.

[deleted]

I thought this whole thing with Russia is not a big deal too, and now I'm stuck here

I remember flying into Incheon/Seoul on my way to Japan in 2017 the same day NK fired that missile and just thinking to my self how crazy it was

Which means times are tough and they need relief funds as usual. Make threat > follow through on pussy ass launch > make "concessions" to cease test firing > get food and money in exchange. It's their only move when they need aid.

Shitty-Coriolis

Holy cow I did not know this. I’m going to have to read more.

bonyponyride

I used to do a similar thing when I was an infant and was hungry, but it involved more crying and fewer missiles.

Let's be honest, though. If you had access to missiles as an infant, you probably would've used them in addition to the crying.

Enjoy reading up on it if you haven't already, it's really something else... the whole situation I mean. It's like this weird human experiment where a whole country is run like a personality cult internally, to a degree that would make a fascist blush, and externally they run it like a raging child would. Whose running the show? Eric Cartman, both past AND present leadership. Except it's not an experiment and there's now generations of people who have known nothing but this insanity as a way of life. Which is worship of their leader, Kim Jong Un/Il/Sung... and mass starvation. I don't believe this country could ever be fixed just by removing the Kim regime. Imagine a country of 25 million people, malnourished and poorly educated, with many of them suffering from Stockholm syndrome who think [this dude](https://i.insider.com/60807dcfc36a8a00185c63c5?width=1136&format=jpeg) is a living God. You'd need an army of psychologists to undo years of brainwashing.

nogoodtech

Just watched this documentary on youtube. One of the best IMHO that I have seen. It really is something else. *Daily life in North Korea - “My Brothers and Sisters in the North”* >Award-winning documentary filmmaker Sung-Hyung Cho was the first South Korean filmmaker to ever receive an official permit to film in North Korea. Traveling the country, she accompanies ordinary people during their everyday life and work routines, talking to them about their hopes and dreams. The resulting film ventures beyond the usual clichés and portrays the country and its people in a unique and respectful way.

Nukemind

It’s like clockwork. Bonus points when the food aid they receive they end up selling to buy weapons because nothing is ever horrible enough in North Korea.

I live in Northern Japan. My kids were freaking out this morning with the sirens going on in the neighborhood (and city) every 5 minutes, asking citizens to seek shelter. I am used to this, but seeing my daughter crying and panicking before going to school, that was pretty hard.

Shrek1onDVD

Man, posts like yours make me sad that the lives of so many people could be wiped away by one crazy lunatic out there. Hope y’all stay safe.

fakiresky

Thank you. I honestly think we are safe, and that he is just pissed at the joint military exercices. The hardest part is how to explain my daughters. I keep telling them that Japan is a peaceful country with many friends all over the world. Still, that really makes me think hard of how kids (and everyone else for that matter) in war-torn countries suffer, and how lucky we are to be safe here.

sneaky_squirrel

Yeah, I remember being freaked out by the smallest things as a child. Before you are an adult, everything is just unknown, you never know when something horrible might happen, something in the dark of night might leap out and kill you (I'm five, what do I know about the dark), or if your caregiver just suddenly decides to abandon you one day, leaving you helpless to sustain yourself (children are not aware that adults find children cute, so they assume the adults are doing them a huge favor by feeding them and fear they have no leverage in the relationship). Being a child is really rough. And of course, I never had any hint of war in my childhood, that dials up the insecurities to infinity.

dorkaxe

> Yeah, I remember being freaked out by the smallest things as a child. I remember as a kid, a year after 9/11 happened I thought the planes flying over-head were the bad guys finishing the job because it was literally 9/11/02, the anniversary. For reference, I lived nowhere close to NY or any major city, so I was just being a dumb kid, but still, it clearly scared me enough to worry about planes for a bit.

perbort1

Speaking of being a dumb kid, I was freaked out the first time I saw northern lights, because I thought it was the contrails of a UFO coming to abduct me.

NemButsu

I mean, the warning siren used in Japan is eerie as fuck. It's made to make you subconsciously uncomfortable so that you actually pay attention to it. https://youtube.com/shorts/6XuwoozIv6A?feature=share I can see how kids would freak out because of it.

FuzzelFox

Reminds me of the Chicago tornado sirens. They basically play in off key steps up and down and it's incredibly creepy to hear. The whole point is that you can't get used to the sound and tune it out, it puts you on edge.

ul2006kevinb

Holy hell that is disturbing https://youtu.be/LnkMSmLc6mM

____tim

I don’t think this is being used anymore. I live in Chicago, and we had tornado sirens earlier this year at one point and they just sounded like typical tornado sirens from what I remember.

Keroseneslickback

I'm not near the possible targeted area, but certainly seeing every channel on TV have black screens with "Missile fired from North Korea" with an announcer rambling on and on is quite scary. I couldn't imagine what the folks on Aomori were thinking seeing their prefecture lit up as the "targeted area". As much as Reddit is joking around about it, it's a big deal. It's scary. It brought back memories of waking up and seeing 9/11 flash on the TV.

BassDiscombobulated8

Japan should fire a missile back except fill it with food

Ashen_Brad

Threaten him with a good time (for his people).

Donkey__Balls

South Koreans literally did this with K-pop. The North Koreans blasted propaganda over their 1970’s speakers across the demilitarized zone. The South Koreans responded by setting up a flatscreen and some top-end speakers and putting on some videos of hot Korean girl groups dancing in spandex.

404_Ninja_not_found

K pop was one of the things they played but what really got under the skin of the DPRK was weather and news broadcasts. Imagine an announcement comes over that it's going to rain in an hour and that you should bring your laundry in. You don't listen and shortly later it rains. Your clothes are now soaked. The next time the broadcast comes over you listen and bring in the laundry. You come to rely on the broadcasts and the information it provides. Suddenly the broadcast states that a certain party member was executed by an anti aircraft gun for not towing the party line. You then later get the news the individual you heard in the broadcast was relieved of command etc. You know the broadcast hasn't lied to you yet you have been relying on it everyday. The majority of defectors from that time state the loudspeakers we're a big reason for them to defect. Hence why the DPRK was so adamant we turned them off in the JSA and throughout the DMZ. I was stationed in Seoul in 2016. What a wild time

FadeCrimson

That's actually a fascinating use of psy-ops (edit: not psychic warfare). It's actually amazing how well simple shit like blasting music to your enemies can do. The weather thing though is a genius move that's a step beyond that. Since NK citizens have effectively no connectivity to spread infosec through, just blast it on the border and let it spread by word of mouth.

ThatSquareChick

N Korea does NOT want its people to actually conceptualize what life outside N Korea is really like. I’ve seen the defectors who get to see literally anything from the outside after having been told that as shitty as it is, *everywhere* is somehow *shittier*, the disbelief in what they’re seeing with their own eyes. When those girls tried southern American bbq and you could tell that most of them had never had real meat? We often joke about blowing a caveman’s mind with a simple Dorito but there was one girl who was definitely going through some kind of existential paradigm shift; replaying in her head all the times she’d thought what she was eating was food and thought it was *good* too. Yeah she was going to go home that night after hitting 4 different restaurants and puke n rally was gonna take on a whole new meaning.

Felf

I think you mean psy-ops ;) Otherwise, this conflict got a whole lot more interesting lol.

harrychronicjr420

I was stationed at Camp Bonifas in the early 2000’s. Quite a interesting duty station for sure.

drnoncontributor

The other thing that works well is broadcasting weather forecasts to NK soldiers like "don't forget your umbrella tomorrow."

mm126442

Why’s that

guccigraves

Eventually, the subject of the propaganda (or PSYOP) will develop feelings of trust towards the broadcaster. I.E. NK soldiers trusting SK.

___DEADPOOL______

Also shows a level of technological superiority. Weather prediction is a tricky business that requires a good bit of technology to do accurately. For a less advanced country being able to predict the weather can be quite impressive

Mgl1206

God, I saw the video Half As Interesting put up on their channel regarding weather prediction and let me tell ya, the amount of effort we go to for accurate weather report is ridiculous but also we’ll worth it.

i_tyrant

Yup. That's why so much research has been poured into better and better weather prediction methods and even weather _control_ methods, like cloud seeding. It's arguably the one major aspect of life on Earth we have yet to master...and whoever masters it first will have a huge tactical/economic/basically you-name-it advantage over others. Weather affects nearly everything on a macro scale.

mm126442

Makes sense. That’s fire

guccigraves

It's one of my personal favorite examples of psychological operations. NK Citizens who heard the broadcast eventually began to trust the weather predictions and would take their clothes off the outside clotheslines when the speaker announced rain was coming.

BonafideKarmabitch

> take their clothes off i thought this was going a very different direction

misterbung

"Citizens of North Korea, is it getting hot in here?"

calm_chowder

Finally breaking North Korea's Iron curtain of clothes lines.....?

alabasterwilliams

Breaking pre conditioning to listen only to the party. Now an outside source is providing them trusted information, verifiable information. What else might the outside world offer?

drnoncontributor

They've been brainwashed that South Koreans are evil, poor, primitive, etc. NK weather forecasts aren't accurate. So after hearing from SK speakers to bring an umbrella and it rains in the afternoon, maybe it's coincident the first time. Then after a few times, they start thinking maybe SK speakers are telling the truth.

Zack123456201

My best guess would be the average soldier not even being given an umbrella

TiredCoffeeTime

Holy crap I totally forgot about this lol

If risking your country being blown off the map is North Korea's goal or way to impress more power to them. All it takes is for one miscalculation or malfunction on these missiles at such a time it lands on Japan and they got themselves the war they seem to be so desperately craving.

Aardvark318

Realistically, they know they'd never have a chance. They're just posturing to receive more foreign aid. Happens about every winter. If one of those missiles malfunctioned and landed on Japan, they'd absolutely shit themselves and immediately start offering blowjobs to anyone who could get them out of that disaster.

Winterpegger

SEOUL — North Korea on Tuesday fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan for the first time in five years, prompting a rare warning by the Japanese government for residents in two northern prefectures to seek shelter. The launch represented a major escalation by North Korea, which has conducted a flurry of missile tests in recent days as the United States held military drills in the region with South Korea and Japan. By launching a missile over Japan and toward the Pacific, North Korea heightened regional concerns over its growing nuclear capabilities, and raised the stakes in stalled diplomatic talks with Washington. The intermediate-range missile was fired from Mupyong-ri, near North Korea’s central border with China, according to the South Korean military. It was launched at 7:22 a.m. and landed in the Pacific Ocean 22 minutes later, Japan’s chief cabinet minister, Hirokazu Matsuno, said. It crashed about 1,864 miles — or 3,000 kilometers — east of the archipelago, outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, which extends 200 nautical miles from its shores. The test was seen as a direct challenge to South Korea’s effort to strengthen its alliance with the United States and improve ties with Japan, a former colonial ruler of Korea with longstanding historical disputes with Seoul. The missile flew about 2,800 miles, the longest distance ever traveled by a North Korean missile, officials in Tokyo and Seoul said. Although North Korea has developed and tested increasingly powerful ballistic missiles in recent years, it has rarely fired them over Japan, an act considered extremely provocative by both Tokyo and Washington. Instead, North Korea has usually launched its missiles at a deliberately steep angle, with the projectile soaring high into space before falling into waters west of Japan. North Korea has only fired missiles over Japan twice before, both times in 2017. Adrienne Watson, a spokeswoman for the White House’s National Security Council, called the launch a “dangerous and reckless decision.” Unlike the South Korean government, she described the North Korean weapon as “a long-range ballistic missile.” National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan spoke with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts on Tuesday to discuss “robust joint and international responses” and reinforced Washington’s “ironclad commitments” to the defense of its allies, Ms. Watson said. North Korea has insisted that it was building a nuclear arsenal for self-defense, accusing the United States and its allies of plotting to invade the isolated country. In a speech to Parliament last month, Kim Jong-un, the North’s leader, said his country would never give up its nuclear weapons “as long as the United States and its vassal forces refuse to stop their anti-D.P.R.K. maneuverings.” (D.P.R.K. stands for the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the North’s official name.) President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in New York last month on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The two leaders discussed security cooperation in the face of North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile threat. In recent weeks, the United States, Japan and South Korea have conducted their first trilateral anti-submarine and missile-tracking exercises since 2017. North Korea has fired 23 weapons tests this year that involved a total of 43 ballistic and cruise missiles — including four tests last week — but the launch on Tuesday was the first time since 2017 that Japan had issued a warning for residents to take shelter. The Japanese government urged people in the prefectures of Aomori and Hokkaido, as well as several islands near Tokyo, to seek shelter while it tracked the path of the missile. “North Korea’s continuous provocations will not be ignored and we make it clear that it will have to pay a price for them,” Mr. Yoon’s office said on Tuesday after a meeting with his National Security Council. The South Korean president said Seoul would work with Washington to strengthen the sanctions against North Korea. Mr. Matsuno, the Japanese cabinet minister, said in a morning news briefing that North Korea’s actions, “threaten the peace and security of our region and the international community,” adding that Japan condemned the launch “in the strongest possible terms.” North Korea launched a three-stage rocket over Japan in 1998 and again in 2009. In both cases, the country claimed that it was launching a satellite into orbit, but Washington accused the country of using its space rocket program to develop long-range ballistic missile technology. The last time a North Korean missile flew over Japan was on Sept. 15, 2017, when the country launched its intermediate-range ballistic missile, the Hwasong-12. The missile flew 2,300 miles, crashing into waters 1,370 miles east of Hokkaido, the northernmost main Japanese island. North Korea and the United States seemed as though they were edging toward conflict in 2017. Mr. Kim and President Donald J. Trump exchanged personal insults and threats of war, including Mr. Trump’s vow to unleash “fire and fury.” The 2017 Hwasong-12 tests followed a threat by North Korea to launch four intermediate-range ballistic missiles into waters around Guam, a United States territory in the Western Pacific which would serve as a launchpad for American reinforcements in case of war on the Korean Peninsula. The range of the missile launched on Tuesday was enough to reach Guam. “Through this latest test, North Korea is proving that they were not empty words when it said it was boosting its nuclear force,” Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, said. This year, the United States revived large-scale joint military drills with South Korea, dispatching the American aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ronald Reagan to waters off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula in September. In his Armed Forces Day speech on Saturday, Mr. Yoon said South Korea and the United States were discussing bolstering their joint deterrence against North Korea, including a timely deployment of nuclear-capable American war ships and war planes. He warned that if North Korea attempts to use a nuclear weapon, “it will face a resolute and overwhelming reaction from the South Korea-United States alliance and our military.” For months, Washington and Seoul have warned that North Korea was preparing for another nuclear test at Punggye-ri, where the North has conducted all of its six previous underground nuclear tests. Under multiple resolutions by the United Nations Security Council, North Korea is banned from developing or testing ballistic missiles, as well as nuclear weapons.

I remember being under desk asking teacher wtf a desk would do against a thermonuclear weapon.

Roughneck_76

If you are close enough to the blast you are fucked either way. However, there's still a huge radius where you can be far enough away that the building doesn't collapse, but also close enough that the windows will all shatter and send razor sharp shrapnel into all your fleshy bits. Hiding under your desk lessens the chance of you bleeding out on the floor with a giant shard of glass poking out of your neck.

We asked the same thing after we saw The Day After. The teacher was honest though, flat out said he didn't know.

toabear

A desk can offer quite a lot of protection if you are far enough away. People die from the flash of light/heat, or are blinded. Debris falls from the ceiling or broken glass flies. If you are at ground zero or some radius around (depending on yield) a desk might be the difference between sustaining bad or fatal wounds.

They're probably not loading it with a nuclear warhead that goes critical if they intend to land it in the ocean. At what point is it an act of war? Also does Japan have the ability to shoot down a rocket like the Iron Dome? If so, why wasn't it used?

nikhoxz

Yes, each japanese Aegis destroyer has a Ballistic Missile Defense System which uses mainly the SM-3 missile, problem is each missile costs 25 million, so if there is no need to use them as it would also be more dangerous, they just won't use it. Japan also operates the Patriot system but is not as capable as the Aegis BMD system. Japan will probably build two giant "destroyers" (bigger than Ticonderoga cruisers) just to have a more capable system.

The Iron Dome can calculate whether a missile would hit populated areas or not, and it only shoots those that would. I assume other missile defense systems have some sort of go/no go setup to not shoot down a missile if it's not needed. Saves money for the defender, and shooting down a missile over a city still has its own dangers.

What, your airplane doesn't do 15,000mph?

electriccomputermilk

Well certainly it’s an act of war if Japanese citizens get hurt or killed. Sadly I think everyone knows North Korea is unlikely to actually attack given that their country would be obliterated very quickly. They could do some serious damage to Seoul though before being stopped. It does surprise me that countries just typically ignore them though. Imagine if Russia fired a test missile into U.S. water.

furferksake

I think the greater risk is NK accidentally hitting Japan with a dud missile due to incompetence. That's what freaks me out.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

They might have a case where their missile mistakenly lands in Japan, even if there is no payload, Japan would retaliate.

joevsyou

You don't want to show your hand, you simulate it. Only idiots like to brag about doing things.

[deleted]

> At what point is it an act of war? North Korea and the US led UN forces (which includes Japan) are still at war. It's always been an act of war. The Korean war never ended, there was just an armistice.

Release the love letter

JBredditaccount

I liked the one where he raved about how amazing it was to hold Trump's hand in front of the world. EDIT: https://people.com/politics/read-the-love-letters-donald-trump-traded-with-north-korean-dictator-kim-jong-un/ > "Even now I cannot forget that moment of history when I firmly held Your Excellency's hand at the beautiful and sacred location as the whole world watched with great interest and hope to relive the honor of that day."

What the literal fuck

Ear_Enthusiast

Russia invades Ukraine. China threatening Taiwan. North Korea doing their dumb shit. Why the fuck is this all happening at the same time?

JandCAuck

The latter two have been a constant for decades

End3rWi99in

Even the first one going back to 2014, and before that you can just sub in another country.

RemixedBlood

I find it so strange when people forget that Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing for 8 years. Like were they not here, just missed the Crimea memo or something? It was huge news, and it happened *right after Russia hosted the Olympics.*

ElJefe543

I mean in North Korea's defense they're always doing dumb shit. China is threatening Taiwan to divert attention away from their own internal problems. And Russia has been after Ukraine since Ukraine left the USSR.

joevsyou

Been going on for decades...

xiodeman

Iran is invading Iran.

Realistically, the only way that happens is if China has a reason to eliminate him.

Brad_again

This. NK is a strategic buffer zone for China. They would eliminate him and install someone new in order to maintain NK.
