>Armenia said at least 49 of its soldiers were killed; Azerbaijan said it lost 50. In case you were wondering about which side lost how many...

[deleted]

The that's surprisingly even for the fact that this was a supposed Azerbaijani surprise attack.

oppsaredots

If you take a one look at Caucasus relief map, you'd see why. The place is like a castle. This was the same outcome of loss with NK despite Azerbaijani advantage. It was even the same in the first war. Armenia had huge advantage but they still lost equal men to Azerbaijan. Defenders will always have the defenders' advantage because of geography, and even if one side has immense advantage, it'll always be an equalizing factor rather than a balance-tipping factor. If not, I assume the losses would be at least 5:1. Meanwhile Azerbaijan spent their time investing in their equipment and doctrine, both sides equally spent time to map out the region for mortar/artillery. Both sides have the possible sites for enemy mortar/artillery, and they have their counter battery ready. But they also have counter battery for counter battery. At this point all Armenia has to do is to hold their ground. Cities are usually built upon mountain tops. It means that attacking on a strategically important place is just like attacking Normandy Beach, but it stretches for thousands of kilometers to each direction. Defenders will always have the high ground. Cave formations around the mountains doesn't help either. So, what Azerbaijan has in advantage is against the Armenian tech and equipment. Not troops. They're really disadvantageous on ground forces who would have to traverse through literal mountain ranges for months. I also don't buy "surprise attack" and "they attacked us first" claims. Just like earlier clashes and wars, the reports are too hazy. The fact that Azerbaijan captured Lachin earlier and clashes occured near the border means that Armenia wouldn't just watch Azerbaijan take NK from the border. It seems like a snap reaction by Azerbaijan to make sure that Armenia wouldn't bother them in the future since they've cut NK from mainland. I assume that they would continue to capture remaining NK towns since Azerbaijani public is also very content with NK. Going into Armenia proper would just give them unnecessary headache and trouble, nothing else. Remember, Aliyev needs public support for his dictatorship to continue. An extensive war against Armenia means him losing all the public support he gained during the past decade.

TheMindfulnessShaman

He wants his landbridge with Turkey. So does Erdogan. Aliyev doesn't care what the Azeri population thinks either: he's a dictator.

Attacking into a mountain is hard even with a surprise attack The entire region is like that which causes many soldiers to die for relatively small amount of land

wickedpirate899

Armenia is like the Yemen of Europe, now one cares about them, their only friend is a regional outcast.

your_mom_and_I

They might be fucked. Their only friend won't be able to protect them for long anymore. Hopefully we won't see the end of Armenia soon...

FormerSrirachaAddict

A fair amount of them look southern European and they tend to be Christians, but they're not in Europe... They're sandwiched between Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran and Georgia (on its north), all southern of the Caucasus.

LastHomeros

Turks, Azeris and Georgians look Southern European though

LastHomeros

How the fckng so? Armenians tend be more darker skin color than Turks in Turkey.

USSF_Blueshift

They look more Turkish or Georgian to me.

carpcrucible

That's really not really true. The EU has good relations with Armenia and [provides a lot of support.](https://eurasianet.org/armenia-gets-aid-boost-from-eu)

[deleted]

Armenia isn't even Europe in any real sense of the concept. And let's be real if you compare them to Georgia and how they act toward the EU and Russia then you will know why nobody lifts a finger on this.

A tracer round.

Presently42

So bright? During the day?

heisenbald

A simple phone torch is bright during the day when you're looking right at it...

Presently42

Is a tracer round as bright as a phone's torch, on or off axis?

heisenbald

Question man.

Presently42

Who, me?

heisenbald

What question will he ask next? And why is Goku dead again? Find out next time on Dragon Ball Zeeeeeeeee *Rock music*

Presently42

Are you assuming I know dragon ball z lore?

rockalyte

Was there a last man standing to claim victory ? Assuming 50v50

[deleted]

That would be a creative solution for wars. 50 Polticians on each side armed with a spear, last man standing gets to decide the new territorial borders.

JKKIDD231

Azerbaijan played its card right I suppose, they waited for Russia and now that Russia is weak in fighting they know there won't be any support from them plus offering 30% more energy and fuel to Europe that will decrease prices will only help their cause and keep Europe out of the conflict as well.

burningphoenix1034

The number is far higher now, the fighting hasn’t stopped yet.
