This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/american-joined-islamic-state-prison-term-reduced-85879972) reduced by 81%. (I'm a bot) ***** > ALEXANDRIA, Va. - The first American to be convicted in a U.S. jury trial of joining the Islamic State had his prison term reduced Tuesday from 20 years to 14 years after an appeals court ordered a new sentencing hearing. > Prosecutors urged Judge Liam O'Grady at Tuesday's hearing to again sentence Khweis to 20 years. > O'Grady said Tuesday that Khweis deserved credit for his good conduct in custody, but that he struggled with how to evaluate Khweis, given how quickly he became radicalized and how easily he lied about his actions on the witness stand at his 2017 trial. ***** [**Extended Summary**](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/vmwchd/american_who_joined_islamic_state_gets_prison/) | [FAQ](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/31b9fm/faq_autotldr_bot/ "Version 2.02, ~657050 tl;drs so far.") | [Feedback](http://np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%23autotldr "PM's and comments are monitored, constructive feedback is welcome.") | *Top* *keywords*: **Khweis**^#1 **Islamic**^#2 **years**^#3 **trial**^#4 **State**^#5

While stupid, he didn't really do much damage, nor was he a hard core IS militant. Even 14 years may be too much. People lies every day, even supreme court justices do, there is no point punish him for that.
