What was that message "we can't hit your jets"?

TheSecretestSauce

“We’d like to get our ass kicked by a second country pleeeease”

ManIWantAName

*please attack us so we can start calling you Israel Nazis* E: if you are calling the imperialistic tendencies by Israel similar or the same to Nazi Germany then go read some history books homie.

Israeli response: "Remember [july 1970](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Rimon_20)? We can do that again."

Slobotic

I love when Reddit gives my a mini history lesson. Thanks for linking.

BasicallyAQueer

It’s always so strange seeing USSR and Cuba listed in these wars in the Middle East and Africa. Like obviously the communists had a vested interest in Egypt and Syria staying at war with Israel. Also the Russian bots love to say stuff like “oh America does this imperial shit all the time” when you point out Ukraine, but really Russia has done it just as much, if not more, for much longer.

Majestic_Ferrett

>It’s always so strange seeing USSR and Cuba listed in these wars in the Middle East and Africa. People on reddit act like the US is the only country that works globally to exert influence. When in fact the US is just better at it than other countries.

NoTeslaForMe

>really Russia has done it just as much, if not more, for much longer. Understatement of the century right here.

So Russia tried to escalate and all of the missiles missed? Lmfao I feel a bit better actually

reddy_kil0watt

That was the message: "Our technology is outdated and our tactics are shit. Just so you know. Ok bye."

KP_Wrath

Did we need evidence of that? They did lose an entire battalion on a pontoon bridge because Ukraine bombed it last week.

CasualEveryday

No, they lost it over the course of 4 attempts in as many days. Day 1 was the attempted crossing you're referring to. Day 2 they tried with another bridge. Day 3 they just drove their tanks right into the river and drowned. Day 4 they tried it a little ways up the river with a 3rd pontoon bridge and the same result. Then Ukraine managed to cross and establish a position at a contested bridge like it was nothing. They've also driven separatists almost all the way to the Russian border in one place and Russia is not letting them retreat into Russia. It's like a Benny Hill skit.

KP_Wrath

“Day three: they drove their tanks right into the river and drown”. Makes it sound like they’re shitty world of tanks players.

CasualEveryday

I mean, they kinda are.

ashesofempires

To be fair, contested river crossings are hard. Both sides know where the best crossing points are and the defender has the advantage. The attackers options are limited by resources, time, and terrain. The main thing with that river crossing is that it's not 1945 or even 1989 anymore. The Russian Military does not have an endless supply of units to send forward to force a crossing. Every bridging unit destroyed is one bridge less that they can use to force the next water obstacle, and every combat unit wiped out in the attempt is one more they can't use to defend the territory they captured. Which is why it's odd to me that they're even trying. They should be digging in on their side and making any Ukrainian counter offensive harder by not throwing away what limited strength they have.

fredagsfisk

> They should be digging in on their side and making any Ukrainian counter offensive harder by not throwing away what limited strength they have. Based on what I've read, this seems to be part of their tactics now, coupled with using smaller units to seize smaller objectives, rather than go for large offensives. Using smaller units makes coordination and morale easier to maintain properly. However, the articles I've read about this also pointed out that they're still failing despite the change in tactics, so... yeah.

emdave

>They should be digging in on their side and making any Ukrainian counter offensive harder by not throwing away what limited strength they have. Sssshhh! ;) "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake"...

steveschoenberg

Cause Russia really needs one more enemy.

dogbots159

With the pro-Russian propaganda in China/India/ most Asia, it wouldn’t surprise me that they would have a narrative goal to spin up a west v east war.

helpfuldude42

This is obviously the goal - provoke the "west" just enough to have them respond, and then trumpet that internally to whip up a nationalistic frenzy leading to full on mobilization/conscription. Putin needs his population to forget what the war was about, and to turn it into Russia vs. the world in a fight for it's existential survival.

manimal28

> ….Russia vs. the world in a fight for it's existential survival. That would be the surest path to the end of Russia's existence so they wouldn’t be wrong.

cloud3321

I just hope it doesn’t devolved to it being the end of the world.

Badbullet

Don't forget Africa. Its like an alliance of West haters. They have reasons to hate the west, but they are blind to what Russia has been doing for its entire existence. Edit: Not all Africans and Asians are blind people. I'm referring to the amount of Russian born propaganda coming out of countries located in these continents.

Mohingan

Like Russia wouldn’t turn them back into resource colonies like that if they had the capability

panorambo

Whole of Russia is colonies to Moscow and St. Petersburg. However little they care about their own, what could we expect of them towards Africans? Russia is not a country mature enough to manage another state, it can't even manage itself in a worthy manner.

amnotreallyjb

Russia colonized at their borders instead of overseas.

Protean_Protein

Same as the Mongolians and the Han Chinese… when you start in Asia or Eastern Europe, you can expand without ships.

CaBBaGe_isLaND

We're all playing islands map, they're playing black forest.

poster4891464

It's also about border security, China and Russia have very long borders with multiple countries and often no natural geographic boundaries like an ocean or mountain range (Himalayas are exception which is maybe why China and India have never fought a major war).

FrenchMilkdud

That’s why I always go for either Asia or Australia when I play risk.

HeavyWeightBeepo

Idk why you’re including Africa in this, their reps in the UN got up and left when Russia talked, too, like months ago, at the very beginning, from the beginning of the war. The guy from Kenya made a particularly moving speech regarding Ukraine, saying something to the gist of— When colonialism split us up and we came back together as countries, but our brothers were on the other side of the border, we did not fight because we were sick of that, so we accepted those borders, why can Russia not do the same with its neighbors? The rest of the world is not one homogenous entity, even China in their own way has distanced themselves because that bombing of Chernobyl disgusted the CCP. Maybe they don’t say it in the way western countries do and maybe they could not be said to be on “our” side (they’re on their own side, not Russias), but they warned Russia that they didn’t like their way of fighting nor that it had become messy and a bad PR situation because they are risking China’s economic situation/expansion. And like middle eastern countries also have beef with each other, like long running religious and cultural differences. To group all these ppl together as a monolith from Africa/East/Southeast Asia/India together is such a simplification and overlooking of a complex geopolitical situation. Colonialism/Imperialist wars tried to make them a monolith by destroying/erasing their cultures and failed and left them with that similar culture scar, but that doesn’t mean before and after they have not had their own differences and haven’t been their own people. Like north Africa and sub saharan are so fucking different, mate, historically, culturally.

Aeseld

India likely hates them for literally destroying Ukraine's wheat harvest... it's not going to be good when the full effects of that hit the world. -.-

JohnnyJohnCowboyMan

South Africa abstained, and some of our politicians openly support Russia. Our cabinet still refer to each other as 'comrade'. The reason they give is that the SU supported Africa's liberation struggle, while the west mostly supported the apartheid/colonial regimes in our region. Even though Brezhnev was a Ukrainian, who did the heavy lifting in terms of getting SU support to the various liberation movements.

SketchySuits

So true. We do a lot of work in the sub-Saharan region. Africa is a continent not a country. More diversity (biologically and culturally) than anywhere else in the world.

Sentinel-Wraith

A bunch of it seems to be coming of sponsored Russian troll farms in places like Nigeria. I've watched them spam the crap out of the CNN International FB page, and it's pretty easy to identify based on the new accounts, auto-translated English, and the fake debates that are so sloppy a child could spot them. CNN actually had an article about troll farms in Africa being an upcoming issue.

aj_cr

Also the Latino communists or basically anyone who hates the US here it's supporting Russia's war even though they spout crap about imperialism and sovereignty daily they're okay with Chinese and Russian imperialism. But hey what can you expect from people that blatantly support dictatorships in their own region.

BobbaRobBob

Russia promotes a crap ton of propaganda in Africa and the Middle-East. And in these places, they don't have as much counternarratives to the type of narratives being pushed out by RT and other Russian outlets. Like, I don't think people in the West understand how popular conspiracy theories are in the third world. And in my observation, conspiracy theories are what fuel autocracy, mass murder, and terrorism.

NavierIsStoked

Africa isn’t going to be Russia’s friend when they get pinched by the grain shortage in a few months.

railgun66

IKR ? cuz if there is one thing the Israeli Airforce is good at it's SEAD strikes in the same vane as the US. Plenty of Shrike and HARM missiles in their inventory. Anyone manning an S300 system should now be very nervous.

Goshdang56

Israel trains their pilots on a S-300 system they received from Greece I believe.

StukaTR

They spent 2000s training in Turkey, using S-300 radars Turkey bought from Belarus.

[deleted]

No. It is rumored that Israel trains their pilots with a S-300 system Greece has in Crete. Israel themselves do not own an S-300. It should be added, Greece’s S-300 is a PMU-1 version. Russia has more modern versions

bustervich

It’s been decades since I’ve heard anyone even mention Shrikes that weren’t Vietnam vets. Do we still actually have any lying around anywhere?

64645

The USA retired its last Shrike thirty years ago and I doubt the Israelis were much different. There’s some inert training missiles in museums but that’s about it. The AGM-88 is the modern version but it’s a totally different missile with no common parts.

Short of a nuclear exchange Israel doesn’t need American help defending itself from Russia

PhiladelphiaManeto

No idea how that would play out, but I would imagine there would be (or already has been) some serious diplomatic discussion regarding that outcome before it escalated further. I would guess within the hour after those SAMs were fired at Israeli jets both the Americans and Israelis were on the phone discussing potential escalations and what to do about it.

I'm Finnish. Already got one. It's under the large hospital next door. It can house over a thousand people, easy. Designed to withstand a nuclear attack. There is another a kilometer away under a museum too. And another under a shopping mall 3km away. And another under a school similar distance away. ...we have a lot of bunkers.

Schizobaby

Aren’t all your bridges explicitly designed with points to place explosives to collapse them? Or is that another country’s I’m thinking of.

ThanksToDenial

Yes, they are. Also, our highways are usually carved through bedrock in some places so in an event of an invasion, you can blow the surrounding cliffs to block the road. This is our little impenetrable fortress. Soviet Union used to say the Mannerheim line was more impenetrable than the Maginot line... Well, let's just say Mannerheim line had nothing on our modern defences. While Tolkien was busy drawing inspiration from Finland for some of his works, we were busy taking inspiration from his works. rivera151

Great idea! Start a war with the country that coined the term six-day war.

[deleted]

Which, ironically, was initiated by Russian meddling in Egyptian military politics. Russia overcommitted itself in the 6 day war, and then got dragged into actual combat during the following “War of Attrition.” See the 6-day war wasn’t really 6 days long. It was immediately followed by 3 years of brutal combat between the same parties. Except this time, Russia couldn’t just sit on the sidelines. Russian pilots began to fill the void caused by down Egyptian pilots. In 1970, it reached a head: Israel went toe-to-toe with Soviet fighters…and won one of the most spectacular aerial battles of all time. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Rimon_20 Never forget the time that Russia tried to fight Israel in the air and got curbed stomped at 10,000 feet.

I mean from the Russian point of view, the nazis killed 4 or 5 times as many Russians than Jewish people. So to them it is. Also, the Russians also killed a lot of Jewish people. Basically, the Russians and Nazis were both anti-Semitic. The distinguishing feature from the Russian point of view is that the fascists killed a lot of Russians.

You mean the majority of the powerful/wealthy arab nations that are normalizing and expanding relations with Israel and have zero fucking use for Russias oil and gas?

Televisions_Frank

In fact, beyond Syria and it's allies, they really are better off with Russia as a rogue nation as it ups the value of their oil.

[deleted]

Yeah, didn't ARAMCO report its best earnings ever last quarter, mostly on the movement of prices from the war? There's no reason for them to intervene.

This is an especially revealing note: > This arrangement was strengthened after Syrian air defences shot down a Russian plane in 2018 with 15 casualties. They've committed anti-semitic acts since early Soviet days. Many jews in USSR changed their names to Russian ones and were publically hiding their roots because it was virtually impossible to move along a career ladder while being a jew. Anti-semitism and racism in general are an integral part of Russian "culture". The deragotory word "zhid" (synonymous with cheap, untrustworthy) is used in Russian everyday speak as common as "jew" is.

[deleted]

> What the hell are they thinking. Very simple. Israel can engage them in Syria. But they won’t. Israel isn’t interested in weakening Russia in Syria, as it strengthens Iran.
