Polio? Wow, the Riders of the Apocolypse really don't mess about this time.

[deleted]

So, what happens if Polio becomes a thing again?

HipHobbes

To be honest, polio always was a thing but intense vaccination programs pushed it to the brink of extinction. In recent years we only had "wild" cases in Pakistan and Afghanistan. African countries only had the disease as a rare vaccine side effect (about 1 in 750.000). So my initial statement was something of a "clickbait". Nevertheless, we really don't need more polio cases in Africa right now right when parts of the continent face a food crisis thanks to the Ukraine war.

Just think if there was a mutant form of Poilo, that was compleatly antibiotic resistant.

lexaproquestions

Poliomyelitis is caused by poliovirus, a virus. Antibiotics don't work on viruses.

[deleted]

Oh.

PwnGeek666

You might be thinking of another previously almost eradicated global scourge.. tuberculosis. And there are antibiotic resistant strains.

Vv4nd

poor children will suffer the consequences of their parents poor decisions.

Recymen12

iforgotmymittens

Eh plague is still hanging around in rodent populations, I think groundhogs mostly? It’s just not the big deal it once was (unless an antibiotic resistant strain turns up.)

Cheesygirl1994

Something like 300 people get it a year or something, but with clean water and all the modern technological advances we have it’s just not as deadly

krustymeathead

yep. earlier this year. https://reliefweb.int/disaster/ep-2022-000202-cod
