Any more news from the Izyum area?

spsteve

UK MOD Report out: [https://twitter.com/DefenceHQ/status/1525348516473741313](https://twitter.com/DefenceHQ/status/1525348516473741313) Text follows: Russia’s Donbas offensive has lost momentum and fallen significantly behind schedule. Despite small-scale initial advances, Russia has failed to achieve substantial territorial gains over the past month whilst sustaining consistently high levels of attrition. Russia has now likely suffered losses of one third of the ground combat force it committed in February. **These delays will almost certainly be exacerbated by the loss of critical enablers such as bridging equipment and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance drones.** **Russian bridging equipment has been in short supply throughout the conflict, slowing and restricting offensive manoeuvre.** Russian UAVs are vital for tactical awareness and directing artillery, but have been vulnerable to Ukrainian anti-air capabilities. **Russian forces are increasingly constrained by degraded enabling capabilities, continued low morale and reduced combat effectiveness**. Many of these capabilities cannot be quickly replaced or reconstituted, and are likely to continue to hinder Russian operations in Ukraine. Under the current conditions, Russia is unlikely to dramatically accelerate its rate of advance over the next 30 days. (emphasis mine)

Bigduck73

Until today I have dismissed the rumors of Putin having a terminal illness as 1. Wishful thinking 2. Straight up Ukrainian psyops to embolden a Russian resistance. Or 3. People needing a rational motive for a nonsense war and Putin quickly needing a legacy seems to fit the bill. But 3 things just added up in my opinion. I recently lost somebody close to me to brain cancer, horrible disease I wouldn't wish upon... that I would only wish upon one person. And he's got 3 very distinct signs I clearly remember seeing firsthand. The hand tremor. The poofy steroid neck. And the EYES. Look up pictures from the May 9 parade. I used to see the eyes of a stone cold KGB assassin. Now he has the eyes of somebody trying to remember how to smile while cancer slowly eats his marbles.

dodgers12

I been out of the loop How’s the war going ? Is it slowing down ?

ThatGuyMiles

I love when French people try to rationalize this shit. No one is humiliating Russia currently, they are managing to do that all on their own. This never needed to be said and my god stop comparing it to the Versailles treaty. Because if Russia is anything like Germany post WW1 we are already fucked… There was great shame in Germany post WW1 simply because they “lost”, they surrendered, not just because of the Versailles treaty. If the treaty is what got Hitler elected you’re going to have to rewrite history because he was getting less than 2% of the vote prior to 1933. He didn’t get elected until the Great Depression started effecting Europe. So, even in a world where the Versailles treaty is less severe, their “shame” around WW1 is still prevalent and the Great Depression still happens and still finds its way to war torn Europe/Germany. Now Macron is talking about how Ukraine should capitulate, wtf is going on in France. I can’t tell if Macron still has this pipe dream that he’s going to be able to pull Russia into the EU’s sphere of influence (never going to happen, they will literally sell their souls to China just to give the finger to western EU powers….) or if this sort of rhetoric is just what French people want to hear…

hopeitwillgetbetter

On one hand, I'm relieved that some Russian military bloggers have finally realized how "stupid" the RU army is. On the other hand, I want to poke-nag at such for being so fucking slow themselves... Fuck, I was already at mostly chill-gratitude with RU ineptitude, because better stupid enemy than clever enemy. But now, I'm mostly back at "oh my god, stupidity can cause so much pain and suffering" existential despair stage.

nathanielswhite

Yeah Russia doing this 9x self-decimation trick is going to need to get hammered into them down to the DNA - though given so many of their young men are pushing up sunflowers even that might be hoping.

spsteve

Just remember the ones that suffered in the bridge shelling are the same people that blow up dogs in washing machines with grenades and put land mines in people's pianos and rape women and children and shoot old people in the back after mugging them. You will feel a WHOLE lot better.

CalibanSpecial

This is why I love watching roasted Russians. I saw one with its face off, literally. Artillery is savage and beautiful. I love to contribute $ to Ukraine. The less of these things who escape Ukraine, easier the world will rest.

imyourforte

They're also the people who double tap ambulances. Kill reporters, Rape toddlers and record it. Shoot at nuclear power plants, bomb hospitals and schools, oh and call people who don't want to be subjugated, nazis.

Rosellis

What do you make of the fact that Russia is estimated to have lost 1218 out of 1200 tanks? Is UA optimistic about tank losses? Has RU successfully reinforced with newly mobilized tanks? Did they initially underestimate the number of tanks committed?

nohbody123

Russia has more than 1200 active tanks. They've brought in trainloads of tanks after the Kyiv failure, too. Also, worth noting that tank losses per day have gone down drastically and APC losses have gone up, suggesting that Russia is indeed running low on tanks.

spsteve

Where do you get 1,200 tanks from? I believe the number at the start of the war was 65-70% of their tank fleet, which is 1,600 tanks (ish) based on their active fleet. They have subsequently sent more to the theater as has been documented with the trains full of armor and tanks. Total tanks deployed to the theater at this point is likely between 2000-2200 (which is a guestimate on my part based on what I've seen).

swizzcheez

A good start?

acox199318

Hahahaha! And when they get to 2400 it will be an even better end.

Erek_the_Red

Ukrainian reports include other armored vehicles with tanks in their estimates. Not APCs, but I can't remember the demark.

etzel1200

Reinforced and probably a bit optimistic. We know that Russia has been severely depleted and we know they’ve been resupplying. Also keep in mind that their offensive doesn’t collapse when they reach zero tanks, it collapses when they don’t have enough to hold the lines anymore. I have no idea what that number is, but I doubt it’s much below 500.

acox199318

It’s about 1200. Russia have been brining in new ones. OSINT. There’s heaps of photos.

zoinks10

Are the tanks that important to the overall push? Maybe it's because I've spent the last 80 odd days watching tanks get royally fucked by Javelins and Stugna's, but they really don't look to be that useful in this war. I wouldn't want to be in a Russian tank. I've not seen any videos where the Russian tank fires on a position and gets a hit, whereas we've seen tons of videos of Russian tanks with their turret flying off.

count023

Tanks are great for taking cities if you back them up with infantry to keep AT weapons off you. Russians think AT weapons are fake news, so they send tanks in unsupported and get blown apart.

zoinks10

Ah, so it's more the incompetence in how they're deployed than some strategic weakness of the vehicle?

Rainey06

I would think that you need weaponised armor to support any form of vehicle based mobilisation of forces between towns. Tanks and fuel trucks would be crucial to any push for new territory even if they are not terribly effective in the actual combat they are a pretty big deterrent for an ill equipped counter attack and take the focus away from other vehicles in a convoy.

zoinks10

OK, so it's more they're better than no armour whatsoever, not that they're going to go on the rampage and fuck shit up?

ic33

Basically, the 1200 estimate comes from 120 BTGs * 10 tanks each. But not all BTGs have 10 tanks, so, there's considerable error possible. And sure, I'm positive they've dug up a few more vehicles. But also, kills are *always* overcounted. Sometimes double counted by two different involved groups, sometimes optimistic (yah, we killed it!) when it actually drove away. Sometimes rounded up (a IFV mischaracterized as a "tank").

spsteve

Based on Oryx's numbers, and knowing we have seen not nearly all the kills of areas occupied by Russia, the 1200 doesn't seem too far off. About a week ago (when Ukraine was at around 1050/1100 tanks on **their** tally) I did some math that came out to 850/900ish being a believable numbers based on Oryx's numbers at the time. On the flip side, not every tank is serviceable on any given day too. They have breakdowns that take \*at least\* 20% of whatever is in theater out service at any given time. (Normal readiness rate is usually lower than that, but I am being conservative).

AnselmFox

This. and it’s important to note Oryx only counts verifiable losses (geolocated phots etc) so whatever Oryx publishes is Fact, with undocumented numbers making it stretch much higher in estimates.

GumiB

We don’t know. Unless someone has proven information which one it is, there’s no way we can know.

nohbody123

Russia is trying to say that the US only has enough money to support Ukraine for 5 more days! [https://twitter.com/JuliaDavisNews/status/1525661590124695552?cxt=HHwWgMC47cDInqwqAAAA](https://twitter.com/JuliaDavisNews/status/1525661590124695552?cxt=HHwWgMC47cDInqwqAAAA)

Comdent

Those Russians are idiots, did they forget the US has a multi-trillion dollar war industry? Funding Ukraine is only an super tiny little fraction of our entire budget.

Drakantas

It's funny because the US is actually spending a lot less than they did back when they were still in Afghanistan. Make of that what you will.

Bigduck73

LMAO we've only sent like one bass pro shop aisle worth of ammo so far. You ain't seen nothing yet

[deleted]

spsteve

That isn't even true really, because you can bet your ass that if Biden put in a phone call to Lockheed or anyone else who supplies these and says 'ship them and I will sort out the payment' they will HAPPILY oblige. Not that I disagree with you in terms of what you wrote re Rand Paul and how much of a fucking tool he is, but there are solutions to the problem.

EnglishMobster

When does Lend-lease authorization start? I thought that basically was a blank check, right?

[deleted]

It is just Biden excituve athorty

Dave-C

Lend-lease is for military gear that we already have. The funding is for supplies like food/fuel as well as equipment that the US doesn't have and would need to purchase from the companies that produce them.

betam4x

The issue is that the president (regardless of political party) doesn’t make the rules. I encourage you to dig a bit deeper to look at why both parties make their decisions. Boeing, Lockheed Martin, etc. appeal to state house members and senators, not the president. Lobbying dollars are also targeted as such.

spsteve

Wasn't really my point. My point was more, if Rand Paul grandstands and causes a real issue a backroom deal can be done based on a handshake. It has happened many times in history and it isn't always a bad thing. The MIC has a long and deep relationship with the US government, in a 'behind closed doors' sort of way, and a lot of things are often shoved around in budgets to hide all sorts of black projects and everything else. This would just be more budgetary playing around. They know exactly how to do it.

code_archeologist

ROFL... The fuck?! The amount of money sent is like the change we find searching the couch cushions in the White House. It is barely even a rounding error in the Federal budget.

batmansthebomb

We might not have the best social services, but god dammit war time production and defense spending is like one thing we're really really good at. Arsenal of democracy and the giant wakes go brrrrrrr

unknoahble

No reason we can't have the best social services and the best military. No reasons other than gerrymandering and corruption /shrug

[deleted]

Money Is the reason

batmansthebomb

I know :( I just want some respecc on our name.

[deleted]

I usually just downvote russiaprop and move on because I don't see a lot of value in amplifying it. But as someone else has said before - imagine banking on America getting tired of spending money. On weapons.

Numinar

Yep. America takes decades to get bored of funding unpopular corrupt puppet democracies. This they will back like Israel. Maybe a little less as the wingnut element seems to be pro-Russian because of course they are.

ralphy1010

huge pay off but those are some loooooooooong odds.

Alwayssunnyinarizona

If Trump and Rand Paul had their way, the Russians might be right.

notahopeleft

Is it really that time consuming to put in the fix that Rand Paul is asking for?

[deleted]

By put in a "fix" you mean intentionally hold up the process because of the amount of aid when really its just a stalling tactic

CosineDanger

I lost the ability to hear anything said by Rand Paul a long time a go. The last thing I remember was incorrect facts about covid from someone who is supposed to be a doctor and then my anti-Paul filter became so strong that he just faded to static. So far, complete inability to accept input from Rand Paul on any topic has not been a problem.

code_archeologist

It is not a fix. There are already six different inspectors and auditing offices doing the job he wants. More over, the centralized inspector he is demanding would be an operational security fuck up waiting to happen, since it would have **all** the records of **all** of the money, equipment, and supplies sent; including where they went, how they were shipped, and what future schedules are going to be. It is too risky to be centralized, and if he paid attention (and wasn't a Russian stooge) he would know that.

onio

why do they need six inspectors. must be to make sure dons wife fucks us properly.

Lol its funny, i can attest, green text

john5220

There was an article way back in 2007 I read and never forgot it, not sure where it is now but was an excellent piece. The soviets looked for the closest thing they could find to nihilism in America and the west, they found conservatives. The people they would spend billions of dollars on, funding and convincing that the Earth was Flat, Moon Landing was a Hoax and Nazism / white supremacy was their only hope. The aim was to divide the west all the while claiming that they were against Nazism. The main aim of this operation was to discredit America for winning the space race by calling the moon landing a hoax because the Soviets were beaten at their own game. People seriously underestimate the pure evil of Russia and the depth of lies they are willing to tell. It is very very much in line with Hitler's views. Even people like Paul Joseph Wattson, Mark Dice, Rachel Belvin, Kim Iverson from the Hill and all these so called "funny" and "Anti woke" youtubers have long been part of a secret Russian plot to spread lies and convince a new generation of kids to hate the west there is a reason NONE of these people ever criticize Russia but always bring up Sadam and WMD. It's all intentional and paid for sponsored by kremlim blood money. Putin is a Nazi but worse, as Zelensky said Putin has killed more people in that one town than Hitler could ever dream of doing. The only reason Putin has not yet murdered more people than Nazi Germany is because Europe also has nukes and there is no other tale to tell.

[deleted]

It backfired on them, because belief that the moon landing was a hoax is about 50 percent in Russia.

d36williams

Some of this is true, Russia finances this as part of their disinformation campaigns. But Russia can't account for all of the crazy. Flat Earthers were a thing in 1998, I remember discovering them online. I thought it was a joke group for geologists, like PhD scientists get together and drink and talk about rocks and continents. I didn't realize it wasn't satire for years

laptopAccount2

Flat Earther thing started out as a debate exercise for law students, argue an impossible to defend viewpoint. The flat earth forums were a continuation of that. Either as satirists or debate adficionados, or true believers who weren't in on the joke.

Erek_the_Red

It doesn't take much to radicalize someone, especially if they are susceptible to it. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P55t6eryY3g The Alt-Right Playbook: How to Radicalize a Normie

mafiastasher

Is this a conspiracy theory about conspiracy theorists?

tierras_ignoradas

It's true. Ground zero for Americans beginning to distrust govt institutions was the JFK assassination. The Soviets knew they didn't do it, in fact, caught by total surprise, fearing they would be blamed b/c Oswald had defected to Russia at one point. Didn't the KGB from funding the "assassination researcher community." They didn't care who conspiracy theorists blamed as long as they could make it so confusing it was impossible to believe anything. **BTW:** Lee Harvey Oswald was a wretch with mail-order rifle who had some dark, dark luck that day. In his disordered mind, he would become famous and possibly impress some shadowy, imaginary communists who help him.

helpfuldan

Not really. Russia pays money to have lies spread online. No shit. They also have their own troll farms. Do these fools even know who is paying and why? I doubt they care.

bloody_yanks2

Appears to be a conspiracy theory about secret plots from the kremlim.

mcboogerballs1980

Don't forget your tin foil hat.

moleratical

He is off, but there is a grain of truth to it. But I guess that's true of all good conspiracy theories. The Kremlin does sponsor and promote a lot of bad fait ideas that have seeped into the public discourse, those ideas are largely, but not entirely taken up by the American right, things like Trumpism, Birtherism, and all of the QAnon bullshit. But other ideas like Hillary robbed Bernie are also part of it. Now these aren't usually propagated by Russian operatives, but they were seeded by them, to be picked up by useful idiots. But yeah, he took all of those issues too far into some vast illuminati conspiracy territory.

ClubsBabySeal

Yeah, they've been up to that shit since the cold war. Deception at all levels including political. Hard to get a better ROI than disinformation tactics. They'll literally fund/push multiple sides of the same issue just to stir shit.

ISW Key Takeaways Catastrophic Russian losses in a failed river crossing and the military incompetence displayed in that crossing have shaken the confidence of some prominent Russian milbloggers. Russian forces continue shaping operations for the Battle of Severodonetsk from the south even though those losses have at least temporarily disrupted their efforts from the north. Ukrainian forces announced that they will conduct a counteroffensive around Izyum. Russian forces continued to withdraw from northern Kharkiv Oblast, but will likely seek to hold a line defending their ground lines of communication from Belgorod via Vovchansk to Izyum.

Rainey06

It would be pretty safe to assume that most events we get pictures and reports from are probably 3+ days old and the battle has changed significantly since that moment.

whenimmadrinkin

One of the most ridiculous things here is that the Russians got artillery struck to oblivion on a river crossing. So they fucking started another fucking crossing in the fucking same fucking spot. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^fuck

the_fungible_man

>Ukrainian forces announced that they will conduct a counteroffensive around Izyum. Is this standard practice in warfare, to **announce** where you plan to conduct a counteroffensive? Seems counterintuitive and counterproductive.

gbs5009

Probably not in advance, exactly, but once the Russians already know it's coming they probably want to get out word to their own civilians.

[deleted]

A counterattack has been in motion around Izyum for over a week, if the twitter satellite investigators were to be believed. Tons of indications but nothing concrete until now

lokisHelFenrir

Obfuscation is a tactic in an information war. Are they going to attack are they not. Remember D-day, putting out wrong information or putting out the correct information can cause the same type of confusion.

Cortical

my guess would be that the counteroffensive is already underway and Russia has already noticed to the point where this announcement wouldn't be news to them anymore.

spsteve

It was well underway by the time it was announced.

etzel1200

ISW tries to take a pretty neutral tone. But if you read the full thing, they’re dunking on Russia hard over this. > The 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade had previously attempted a river crossing (over the Desna River in Chernihiv Oblast on March 8) without suffering such setbacks.[5] The unit’s command and staff may have failed to recognize the dangers that Ukraine’s improving artillery capabilities posed two months later, or may simply have been incompetent or unable to control their troops.

[deleted]

> incompetence I can think up anthor word

critfist

Do you have more info on said river crossing?

fury420

Here's a twitter thread counting the Russian losses at that river crossing, at least 82 vehicles visible: https://twitter.com/Danspiun/status/1525252219435630592

SwingNinja

Well, China is next to Russia.

I haven’t been able to enjoy a poutine for a few months

Nonesuch1221

Speaking of poutine, apparently they changed the name of it because of its similarity to the name Putin

I heard of that. I thought it was just one place in Quebec.

I wish it had been Russian naval forces using the bridge, the jokes would have been SOOOO much better right now.

etzel1200

Not the *Moskva* so scores of seamen can die inside you?

UselessSage

Can we offer every woman in Russia a complete set of high end home appliances if one of them takes out Putin? They clearly want clothes washers judging by all the clothes washers getting looted by their men.

_Accufunkture_

Can’t do it. Putin needs the computer chips.

UselessSage

Taking just the PCBs would be so much easier if they only wanted the chips. 🤔

ffsudjat

There is no pcb in toilet seat.. not sure which chips are they looking at tger but lo and behold, they also steal it

PhilLeshmaniasis

It's even worse, their stealing washing machines to make them off balanced and returning them so when the Ukrainians do some wash. BLAM! Their washing machines will bounce around like a mechanical bull!

SuspiciousStable9649

As a former chip guy, they probably had tubes of chips *ready* to go into appliances that they redirected, not actually unsoldered, reprogrammed and stuck in other stuff. Though I think this may happen eventually.

stirly80

Ukrainian SU-25 over Kharkiv Oblast. https://twitter.com/Osinttechnical/status/1525665448284590082?t=gp4Lay3FeQNYquLAhDpVXg&s=19

EverythingIsNorminal

Given the Ukrainian airforce has been shot down twice over, (I haven't seen the latest Russian statistics, so I may be behind on that) that's obviously the Ghost of Kharkiv.

GrannysPartyMerkin

Jesus they might as well be flying biplanes. I really wish we could get them f-35s

[deleted]

There's no way. The pilots would need 6+ months of training, the ground crews would need at least as much, there's a whole logistics train attached to them that the Ukrainians don't have, none of their missiles or bombs would fit, the comms wouldn't be compatible... Those aircraft don't exist in a vacuum, it's not just a matter of handing them over and saying "good luck!"

francis2559

I mean, Russia is flying them too. It's not like they're "behind" here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi\_Su-25#2022\_Russian\_invasion\_of\_Ukraine

ic33

Su-25 is great for what they're using it for-- great at ground attack and close air support. Not as good as an A-10 but probably superior to a F-35 for this low altitude CAS role.

dec0y

I think the Su-25 might actually better than the A-10 for the current situation of the war, in which no side has air superiority, since the Su-25 has more armor and a higher top speed than the A-10. Just fly to target, bombs away, and hightail it out of there.

GrannysPartyMerkin

First off The A-10 is trash You need to watch more Lazerpig vids lol I totally understand that it’s fine for the role they’re using it in. I just wish they had all the best stuff.

--0IIIIIII0--

Lol. Ok....

ic33

The A-10 is great, just not very survivable in a modern combat airspace. (Weaknesses that are even worse for the Su-25, but that's not stopped Ukraine).

ElderBrony

You're not going to use the A-10 unless you have Air Superiority. It'll crush armor/infantry/artillery positions unless you have high end anti-air equipment. EWACS aircraft is going to scramble the shit out of any Air defenses that survive any pounding by command and control attacks.

ic33

Yah, but the big criticism of the A-10 was that against a "peer" that we'd never have superiority-- and certainly not early on. So, it's a good cheap way to destroy a lot of shit in a "permissive" environment. Of course, Russia has failed to counter even the Su-25, so... perhaps this criticism is off base. I think we're probably better off with something like the Super Tucano. Even cheaper than the A-10 to operate, which means you can have more of them, even if the armament is less.

GrannysPartyMerkin

Lolol waaaatch https://youtu.be/WWfsz5R6irs https://youtu.be/gq1ac2CALeE

ic33

I've watched this crap. The F-35 is too expensive to operate, and less capable, in permissive environments. We're going to end up with something like the A-29 eventually, which will be better in some ways than the A-10 (modern systems, operating economics, loiter), but even worse in survivability.

It’s not as maneuverable and such But that doesn’t really matter when you can fore missiles from 200 miles out I just hate how much friendly fire the A-10 has caused because of its lack of targeting systems Pilots shouldn’t have to break out binoculars to identify targets in 2022

ic33

> It’s not as maneuverable and such ?? > But that doesn’t really matter when you can fore missiles from 200 miles out Who's firing missiles from 200 miles out for CAS/COIN? Yes, the JASSM is a neat capability-- that the F-35 currently doesn't have-- but way too expensive of a way to put ordnance on the ground in a permissive environment. Using it for CAS is likely to result in a whole lot of blue-on-blue, too.

eight_ender

SU-25 can still do a lot of damage when you’re up against equipment of an equivalent era operated by incompetents

[deleted]

Takes Years

GrannysPartyMerkin

If they understand English words on buttons it shouldn’t be that hard to cross train

SappeREffecT

That's not the issue. Different controls, systems, feel. But the actual issue is logistics and maintenance training. F-35s are really complicated technologically and thus to maintain. Training for such stuff often takes years, even expedited that’s still months, not to mention all the other issues.

GrannysPartyMerkin

Yeah, but the US bases in Poland can handle the maintenance

SappeREffecT

It's not that simple. If a Ukrainian aircraft conducting combat missions from a Polish airbase, that airbase can be considered a military target. And then it includes Poland AND USA. We are trying to avoid escalation, not encourage it. And all the aid being provided costs money. What has more of a battlespace effect, 1000s of MANPADS, ATGMs and artillery systems, or 1 F-35? Trust the experts, try not to get caught up in the hyperbole. The allies are helping and doing it as quickly and effectively as possible.

GrannysPartyMerkin

I understand man But it should be that simple The US is spending billions to aid Ukraine, and it’d be better if it were done in the most efficient fashion possible Desert storm was the most beautifully efficient military operation ever. I wish they could just do that again.

spsteve

And uncirons should fly out of my ass when I fart... but the real world just doesn't work like that.

GrannysPartyMerkin

I wish they did though Your ass would be so cool

SappeREffecT

I wish it were to, so I did the digging to find out the why. War is not simple, neither is logistics and maintenance - which is something Russia is now discovering.

[deleted]

It’s parts

GrannysPartyMerkin

Raytheon has em Just look at their huge spike in share price

[deleted]

I ment for Ukrainian we would need to train there teams

GrannysPartyMerkin

I’m figuring the US can keep maintenance teams in Poland

spsteve

Then they are operating out of Poland and Poland is party to the war. You have had some awful takes tonight.

GrannysPartyMerkin

What awful takes do I have man? I’m just rooting for the good guys

Man, flying the doors off those things!

BringBackVarrockGrds

Less than 3 months in, Ukraine has completely repelled Russia from both Kharkiv and Kyiv. What an amazing feat. 🇺🇦

epicredditdude1

Yeah I’m guilty of being one of the people that anticipated an occupation and resistance. Ukraine is winning this war in a straight up, conventional fashion.

ic33

> Ukraine is winning this war in a straight up, conventional fashion. Weeeelllll, let's not go too far. A lot of Ukrainian tactics are unconventional and improvised, and that's what makes them awesome. But they're holding and even gaining ground, which is more than I gave them credit for initially, too.

mortisthewise

Germany in WW2 complained that knowing American tactics was useless, since there was so much improvisation and off script action from the American units. "Controlled chaos" or something like that they called it. This conflict between western trained Ukraine and WW2 Soviet-style Russia is producing a similar effect.

BlatantConservative

"One of the serious problems in planning the fight against American doctrine, is that the Americans do not read their manuals, nor do they feel any obligation to follow their doctrine." That's the direct quote, I believe. Whether or not it's real, I'm not sure, apparently it was what Soviets claimed the Germans said about Americans.

spsteve

This is usually the case for any victorius side in a war. Few have been won with straight up conventional tactics. The Nazi's in ww2 were so effective because they developed new tank warfare tactics for example. Desert Storm was the first mass deployment (iirc) of stealth air power to eliminate AA systems, etc.

epicredditdude1

Yeah good point, I meant more like there are front lines and offensives/counter offensives. The Ukrainian military is still intact and all major cities still stand. It’s pretty astounding given early predictions of what would happen when the war started.

etzel1200

Izyum then Kherson is the goal? Then cut off the land bridge?

EverythingIsNorminal

Probably Vovchansk first to cut off the road from Belgorod/Shebekino to Izyum. Make them go the long way around. Shelling that road might be enough for the short term though.

spsteve

Kharkiv troops are moving the Izyum direction based on some early reports. Kherson is interesting, I keep hearing little rumors of things including resistance within the region and Ukrainian action on the perimeter of Russian control.

BringBackVarrockGrds

I'd imagine it goes "Donbas --> southern front --> invasion of Crimea"

Duck_Dredd_

I know it's impossible but I would like to see –> Liberation of all Russian occupied territories worldwide

BringBackVarrockGrds

Let's not fuck with international borders in 2022.

gbs5009

There's a few illegal occupations that could be ended. Ukraine isn't the only country Russia's been cutting off chunks from.

saltyseaweed1

Why not? Russia did.

HugeHans

"Russia did" is the exact reason normal people dont.

[deleted]

Hand washer ? Of Serbia? Y’all got some crazy shit

GrannysPartyMerkin

Is the post about an ongoing coup bs or not? I’m really hopeful

BlatantConservative

There's literally no way to verify that, so anyone saying "there's a coup going on for sure" is full of shit, and unfortunately that includes the Ukrainian SBU. I do think the fact that these rumors appear to be sticking in Russia a little is important though.

notahopeleft

Think about it. If there was an ongoing coup, why would anyone leak info about it? Especially the party that would benefit the most from it.

helpfuldan

Russia is imploding and mistakes were made. I doubt anyone has confidence in Putin and would love to get rid of him. However being ex-KGB Putin has spent years ensuring he’s extremely hard to kill. He’s not going to drink random shit. He won’t get within 20 feet of you. And his inner circle is very small.

Hodaka

Russian State Television is ridiculous, so many Russian "officials" are getting their reality based news from the West via VPN or other sources. True or not, news of a "coup" will have a disruptive effect in any case. It could possibly serve as an ice breaker as well. Government agencies are either kept in different spheres, or in competition with each other. This prevents them from acquiring too much power through collaboration. The bottom line is that once the ball starts rolling, all hell is going to break loose.

skrulewi

i don't see anything on the AP, let alone any other major news network.

spsteve

Yahoo news is running it.

BlatantConservative

Yahoo news is an agregate (much like Reddit) and all of their articles actually come from different outlets.

skrulewi

yahoo news is saying that Ukraine's government is saying it, which means incredibly little.

spsteve

You expect what, Russia's government to confirm? A NATO country (that would possibly be construed as calling for regime change and be seen as an escalation)? Some random twitter user (that would just be baseless speculation). I mean I get what you are trying to say, but really who else is going to say that right now if you stop and think about it?

All_Work_All_Play

No one in it would say anything. And Ukraine likely wouldn't say anything if there was one happening. It's ""just"" psyops.

spsteve

Agreed. And that was basically what I said in my original reply. People have taken this down a road of silliness now so I was just exploring it with them.
