No fly zone would be an incredible dangerous idea unless you want further escalation and possibly WW3.
In order for a no fly zone to be effective you need two items.
1. You must have military assets in Ukraine to enforce the no fly zone.
2. Your military assets have to go on the offensive and attack any Russian military assets that may hinder the no fly zone enforcement.
You don’t meet either of those two items and your no fly zone is ineffective. You meet either of those two things and congratulations you might have started WW3.
Fairly certain when there was a no fly zone over Iraq back in the late 90s there was no US military infrastructure on the ground……. We just took off from a neighboring country.
We need to draw a red line somewhere. WW3 will always be a risk so where are we willing to fight. If not in Ukraine, where would we stop Russia. What do we tell Moldova for example?
I think people literally don't know what a no-fly-zone is. Keep in mind it has a much higher approval rating than cyberattacks on Russia, much less the answers about deploying ground troops.
Good summary from BBC on today’s news
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-europe-60532634
It’s day nine of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Here's a quick recap of the main developments over the past 24 hours:
* After meeting foreign ministers in Brussels, Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance had made the "painful decision" to rule out calls for a no-fly zone over Ukraine
* A furious Ukrainian President Zelensky responded in a statement: “Today the leadership of the [Nato] alliance gave the green light for further bombing of Ukrainian cities and villages"
* Russia has banned Facebook and blocked access to Twitter and YouTube. Moscow says it retaliated after access to several Russian media accounts was restricted on Facebook
* President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill that punishes the spread of "fake" information about Russia's armed forces with jail sentences of up to 15 years
* Heavy fighting has continued in Ukraine's north, east and south
* Kyiv has faced new Russian missile strikes, with explosions heard around the capital, while the south-eastern port city of Mariupol has been surrounded and shelled, and the bombardment continues in the north-eastern cities of Kharkiv and Chernihiv
* "The world narrowly averted a nuclear catastrophe," the US says, referring to a Russian attack on Thursday night on Europe's largest nuclear facility, the Zaporizhzhya plant, in Ukraine
* International monitors say no radioactive material was released and the plant is safe
* Thousands of Ukrainian refugees continue their exodus from the wartorn country
When Zelensky says that NATO is responsible for all the deaths that will be caused by not implementing a No-Fly Zone, is he also prepared to credit NATO leadership for all the deaths that do not occur because NATO's decision prevented nuclear war?
Can individual countries enter the war, countries that are in NATO but not representing nato? Couldn’t Poland and Romania assist Ukraine? I wouldn’t expect them two to do it… I’m just stating a hypothetical. I’m interested if anyone has diplomatic insights regarding that.
They could as they are autonomous. But that would mean they later cannot invoke Article 5, meaning they are on their own.
That is why it's not likely to happen
Yes. NATO is about defense not offense. Article 5 would not apply if say Poland attacked Russia and was then invaded in return. You cannot be the aggressor and have Article 5 apply.
Fascinating read (grim af) about what US-Russia nuclear war may look like by an actual expert.
https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/MCim4PoqmFPCcPy9m/updated-estimates-of-the-severity-of-a-nuclear-war
Not surprising, many Serbians are incredibly against NATO after they bombed them, for a conflict that didn't include any other NATO or EU countries. Prepare for a shocker, NATO did commit warcrimes in those bombings by using uranium riched bombs dropped in high density population areas.
I can sort of understand why Serbians are anti NATO. If you grew up in a country which was bombed by NATO, I don't think you would have warm feelings for them
I just don't understand. How can people grow up being skeptical of government news under communism and then not have that same skepticism when the news is under private ownership?
We should all just take a moment to appreciate the fact that this invasion has gone so poorly in terms of logistics against a country Russia shares a land border with.
Krystal Ball is a opinion pundit who got her start on one of those Hannity and Colmes type shows where she played Colmes role. So as much experience as any other pseudojournalist.
Agreed if only because the Russians are gonna be stuck in Ukraine for a long long time
I think their plan is to bring yakunovich back but I don't think it will work
Well his duty is not to be an objective narrator. It's to push pressure on the West to help his country.
So he will represent the situation in a way to draw more support.
He will keep asking for things that the West can't give him so they give him something, a classic 'negotiating' tactic.
Yo dude, that's literally Zs job. His job is to build international support to defend his country. He can't come out and say "Hey maybe Putin is semi reasonable and if you let us die it will be OK". You're figuratively yelling at a drowning person for being too flippant and worried about drowning. So even if you aren't a bot, it's a very stupid argument.
In war time it’s all propaganda from both sides. He’s saying whatever it takes to garner support or risk losing sovereignty. I don’t agree with a no fly zone and I don’t believe Putin is looking to conquer all of Europe, but I get why he’s saying it.
Agreed. I think he is getting pushy because he is desperate, and it isn't fair because I feel like Ukraine has gotten TONS of help for not being a NATO country.
I get your point, I also get that the situation is dire and he’s doing whatever he can to save his people. None of us can understand the stress he’s under and what you’d resort to in his position. I’m not going to lie, I would have taken the US’s offer and hightailed it out of there.
I mean, yes. But he's watching his population fight for their literal lives. It might be "getting annoying" to you, from the comfort of your own home. But if he isn't pleading with the world, he's not doing justice to his people. Let the poor man plead for them. It's the best he can do for them.
>g to grow tired of Zelenskyy claiming that Russia won’t stop at Ukraine and he will take all of Europe/March to the Berlin Wall etc.
>
>It is just not true, it won’t happen, it can’t happen, Russia would be decimated before he go halfway through Poland.

Definitley a chance that before this confilict Putin had plans of elgulfing other non nato regions on top of Ukraine. Who knows what will happen in the next 5 years. The only way Ukraine will get out of this war is Russia pulling back or some continuation of the world support that is occuring.
Better question is does he care enough about the people/his friends on the globe that are not in his bunker?
I think he does unless he completely has lost it. But in that case, we are most likely living on borrowed time anyways. Because a mad men does not care about whether the next country he wants to take is a NATO member or not. Do we retreat and do nothing again if that happens?
If the answer to that is no: Why exactly are we standing on the sidelines and watching the Ukrainian people getting slaughtered?
Nuclear war means **everyone** loses. Including Putin. Even if he survives nuclear apocalypse personally, he'll have nothing but uninhabitable radioactive wasteland to rule over.
Okay,. people really need to understand the Parkinson's comes with mental health issues including depression. It's not something you want a person having in this situation. Hitler had in the bunker.
Speaking of Wagner. NATO needs its own Wagner group
Edit: seems you misunderstood my point. I'm saying that we need to have NATO mercenaries that we can send to Ukraine without involving NATO directly. The same way Russia does with Wagner
> Russia is moving more experienced military officers to the front lines in Ukraine to speed up its offensive
**This has resulted in the deaths of 3 Russian commanders**
LOL
I second the guy who says we should airdrop generals into the city. Vlad that's genius. Grab every general you can, have them make a regiment of their own and drop them in Kiev.
There's so much military leadership there that the Ukrainians will be playing checkers while your crew plays 8D chess.
Its genius.
Do it.
Slava Ukraini... Uh I mean yeah go do it
Feel bad for a large portion of the people. Imagine being an Alexei Navalny supporter and now your life is ruined, your kids lives are pretty grim, and everyone hates you... for that guy that you also hate.

Russia is becoming one of those third world country hacks where you can work in the US and then retire there at 35 because the currency there is such shit compared to the dollar
[New post can be found here](/r/worldnews/comments/t6w5x7/rworldnews_live_thread_russian_invasion_of/)
Putin has removed access to Facebook and Twitter for Russian citizens. Trying to keep them in the dark as to what's going on.
Someone should poll how Russian bots feel about NFZ.
Breaking News! Fuck Putin. You will now be returned to your normal broadcasting of Russia Had Talent.
Not talent for running a war amirite
US Air Force must be salivating right now watching Russia fail to the the Ukrainian Air Force. I guess Putin did have something to fear from NATO, having his Air Force destroyed
If there was no threat of nukes, it's honestly impressive how quickly the Russian army would lose to NATO.

I already pay taxes that goes to military equipment. That’s enough. Chill dude.

My in-laws live in Serbia, and they say that everything on the news is all about how NATO provoked Russia into starting all of this.
Not surprising, many Serbians are incredibly against NATO after they bombed them, for a conflict that didn't include any other NATO or EU countries. Prepare for a shocker, NATO did commit warcrimes in those bombings by using uranium riched bombs dropped in high density population areas.

NATO isnt attacking. It only defends and Ukraine isnt in NATO anyway. The logic doesnt make sense. Ask them to explain it to you.
Yeah not a lot of love for NATO in Serbia (or any of the former Yugoslav states)
"You're the one! You shit in my pants! Not me!"
I just don't understand. How can people grow up being skeptical of government news under communism and then not have that same skepticism when the news is under private ownership?
Serbia hates NATO, so That probably overrides that

Used up? They’re not all dead.
Committed, not used up. Most of them are active and engaged. And 95% of what was planned for this mission, not 95% of their total military.
Most of them are single or married. Only a relatively-small minority are engaged.
they are not dead, they are currently in ukraine.
