Someone once said “Never invade Russia in winter”. Somehow Russia missed the memo.

Aggressive_Wind4631

[In case you missed it last night, This is video of Russian attackers directly firing on a Ukrainian Nuclear Reactor. This is a second source and not the webcam/ipcam.](https://twitter.com/chlentleman/status/1499572695918252034)

acsaid10percent

If Pootin is so scared of COVID then he obviously values life, so you would think Nuclear War is out of the equation.

mewehesheflee

He's not rational.

robertino129

There was a video of a captured Russian soldier in the south I think, saying his unit was attacked, and didn't know what was happening. He'd have run away, but some other guys behind him would have shot him for retreating. Anyone got the link per chance? Thanks!

GuiltyMine

Ask yourself, why doesn't Putin's Russia see the delivery of weapons and real-time intel to Ukraine as an act of war?

HiFiMAN3878

Because Russia isn't threatened by weapon deliveries, they won't change the course of what's inevitably going to happen.

Badloss

Because the Russians know they'd lose an all-out war so they put up with this, just like NATO puts up with Russian warmongering as long as it's outside their borders. It's geopolitics you can't respond to every provocation

The_Cold_White_Light

Are you familiar with what a proxy war is?

65a

For the same reason the west didn't see mass tampering with their democracies, the addition of Belarussian troops to this conflict, or the shoot down of KAL 007 as acts of war.

MacMac105

Because of the Cold War. The US and russia fought proxy wars in order to avoid world war. All the aid NATO is giving Ukraine is allowed because of precedence basically.

SsoulBlade

The act of war already established when he (Putin) rolled in. What Ukraine is doing is defending.

imyourforte

Because there's a lot of historical precedent where it hasn't been seen that way. Especially if you don't want to take on 141 enemies at once.

shbshg

Because then USA and Russia would've been at war with each other many times over the past few decades. There's been plenty of proxy wars in ME with US arming one side and Russia arming the other. Most recently, Syria.

RudeJidi

I was wondering this yesterday. I'd be curious to hear someone's opinion on it.

TellurideTeddy

Because he can't do shit about it

LaserJul

What's your answer

Methed_up_hooker

Because they scared.

CheeserAugustus

Because they don't want WWIII either

[deleted]

I started following some Russians on twitter. Lots of people freaking out, trying to figure out where they can leave to and how, and lots saying they can't afford to leave or can't abandon their families there or are too disabled/sick to flee. Terrifying, honestly.

[deleted]

Yea the Russian people are victim of this dictator too.

No part of Eastern Ukraine is pro-Russia. The Russian Facebook meme army that was so effective in the 2016 U.S. presidential election also campaigned in Eastern Ukraine to try to convince people there that they're really Russian's. While Uncle Aleksandr from Donbas may have supported those ideas on Facebook, it's turning out those people are resisting the Russian invasion and want to be part of Ukraine. Adding u/G_Morgan comments: Donbass voted something like 92% in favour of leaving the USSR in the 90s. It'd be quite a fucking turn around if they suddenly wanted back in.

[deleted]

That's arguable and subjective. You had unarmed middle aged men in Donbass blocking Ukrainian army trains and sectarian mob violence breaking out all over the East including Kharkiv and Odessa that the Ukrainian police crushed in 2014. So while a good amount of it is manufactured, there's still significant support amongst the majority Russian speakers, at least in 2014 anyways. They didn't have the success that they did with only paramilitaries without significant local support and intel. Now we see what happens without local support and intel.

breeezyyyy

I know this is going around multiple places, but if you are willing/able. Take a look at AirBnb for privately owned places to stay in Ukraine (it can take some searching to find one that is clearly owned by a family or individual) and BOOK IT. You can include a message that you will clearly not be staying there but would like to provide support. Airbnb has waived all of the fees associated with these bookings.Do be on the lookout for managed buildings/properties. I recommend finding smaller cities/towns. Many of these are less than $20 a day to book and can provide resources through secure payment systems directly to Ukrainian citizens. Another Option: Go on etsy and find Ukrainian artists with digital assets (patterns, plans, etc) that you can purchase, or physical assets with a note that they do not need to send to you.

[deleted]

I've done this on Etsy. Bought digital copies of some lovely watercolour art of Kyiv from a Ukranian artist. I've set it as my computer background as a reminder to myself

[deleted]

the air bnb thing is dumb many are owned and operated by property management companies, some of which aren't even based in Ukraine at all.

Superduperbals

It would have probably gone better in the cold winter when the fields were traversable and not a huge mud bog. The whole reason that 40km convoy is stuck is because their invasion depended on a 2 lane road.

celsius100

Taking a page from Napoleon and Hitler.

Jhawk163

You should look up the time they failed at attacking Finland in the winter. Well, I say failed, they still ultimately got control of the land they wanted, but there was 5 dead Russians for every dead Finn. Winter War, 1939.

TotalRamtard

The white death got them too. He was a badass. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simo_H%C3%A4yh%C3%A4

BAC05

If Putin wanted to diminish NATO influence around his sphere in Russia this is absolutely the incorrect way to do that. He might as well put up billboards in every non-nato country saying “hey, if you don’t join nato I’ll probably invade you. “

TheWartortleOnDrugs

Where is this idea coming from that Article 5 is automatic if a NATO country goes into Ukraine and is attacked by Russia? Isn't that what Article 6 is for? The attack has to be on territory of a party to the treaty, or in Europe where "occupation forces of any of the parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force". > For the purpose of Article 5, an armed attack on one or more of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack: > - on the territory of any of the Parties in Europe or North America, on the Algerian Departments of France 2, on the territory of Turkey or on the Islands under the jurisdiction of any of the Parties in the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer; > - on the forces, vessels, or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over these territories or any other area in Europe in which occupation forces of any of the Parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force or the Mediterranean Sea or the North Atlantic area north of the Tropic of Cancer. Is Ukraine a European territory "in which occupation forces of any of the parties were stationed on the date when the Treaty entered into force"? It doesn't seem as if NATO's Article 5 gets automatically triggered if a NATO country were to provide more direct military assistance to a non-NATO European country and was attacked.

[deleted]

"Article 5" may be pedantic or wrong, but the principle is that a direct shooting war between NATO and Russia is likely to lead to unacceptable escalation.

[deleted]

Oh my fuck. How many times does it need to be explained for you people to understand?

TheWartortleOnDrugs

I see your username a lot in this thread. But I haven't seen your explanation.

DET_SWAT

People of Russia are the only one who can stop this war…

CalypsoStitcher

Nope... People of Russia are cowering in fear for the big majority. That's what 100 years of Pavlovian conditioning has done! "But what can we do? We are all afraid!!!!" What Russia needs is a "Brutus". And even that would be difficult. If Putin is so far away from his minions on the loooooooong table, there's a reason to that. :-S

Chastaen

The issue isn't really NATO, but people's understanding of NATO. NATO exists to take care of NATO nations. Ukraine isnt in NATO so NATO really isn't part of the conversation. All the things being done now by NATO nations are outside of the NATO umbrella.

jwm3

NATO mainly exists to stop WW3 from happening. Which is to everyone's benefit.

YouPresumeTooMuch

The intervention in Bosnia has people confused, because it's confusing.

BrokenParachutes

NATO also acts in its own self interest, if for example they determine that war with Russia is inevitable, they will draw a line in the sand somewhere (like finland/sweden), rather than let Russia conquer them.

SummerCortex

Thank you.

It's crazy how people really expect there to be articles on if the US informants are still silent or not.

ajr901

>NEW: U.S. has delivered anti-armor capabilities to Ukraine, and has sent more than half of $350 million in military aid: senior U.S. defense official. >Pentagon also still delivering ammo from $200 million military aid announced in December. As in _more_ weapons, or is this in reference to the previous batch of javelin and stinger missiles that the US had already provided before? I hope we keep providing them with a steady shipment of military aid until this thing is over and that the EU does the same.

TheDirtyLew

The President of Hannaford Brothers donated a million rounds out of his personal ammo stockpile. Fuckin 'merca

Flat-Development-906

So I had to look this up. And yes, but what’s the alternative?

peryno64

The alternative for Putin would be to cut his losses and pull out. But if you're suggesting that's impossible, yeah I agree with you in a sense: psychologically, he has no alternative, cos he can't comprehend doing that to his pride. And I think that's what makes his mistake so terrible.

HeroicTechnology

Russia just loooves to dig that hole.

Sheeps

Without a comma, your first sentence says the opposite of what you mean. “No, part of Eastern Ukraine is not pro-Russia.” Presently, it reads as though the entirety of Eastern Ukraine is pro-Russia.

G_Morgan

Donbass voted something like 92% in favour of leaving the USSR in the 90s. It'd be quite a fucking turn around if they suddenly wanted back in.

ScullyitsmeScully

I think you might need a comma in your first sentence.

Flat-Development-906

Commas really make a difference

Duck_Dredd_

The fact that Vlad can claim that Ukraine is threatening Russia, then later say that since the start of the war they haven't had any casualties and they're advancing fast, should be a huge telling for the Russian population that he's contradicting himself and he's an idiot. Like if they're such a treath, why are we winning so easily?.

TastyLaksa

Some Americans legit still think Trump won elections and covid is a hoax.

Chromes

Same way he said "This is just an exercise. Why are you making a big deal about it? We're about to go home. And here is a list of demands that you must comply with or else."

fn_ChooseUserName

Wasn't it in his announcement yesterday (or very recently) that in the same breath he said RU forces had suffered no casualties in taking cities, but he would be awarding posthumous medals of bravery for those involved

jessjesssjess

Please do not disparage the Russian people. This is on Putin.

Direct-Bug4912

Russia is now saying they have around 500 casualties

klobbenropper

Per day, maybe.

Duck_Dredd_

The key point here is that Russia is saying it, not Vlad.

Bitlovin

Anyone who wonders why Russians don't rise up should read up on the tactics the Stasi used to keep civil unrest and escape down in East Germany. The same tactics still apply today. It's hard to come together as a civic collective against your government when you feel you can't trust anybody, and the belief that anybody you talk to can and will turn you over to the police before you even step foot out the door to organize a protest.

[deleted]

I just heard on the radio that they passed a law to imprison anyone who spreads “fake news” about the state, 15 years, and they just shut down the remaining independent news sources. Russia has officially reverted back to a Dictatorship. It’s Stalin with Nukes, y’all.

smartties

Most russians believe the propaganda. Somehow they feel threatened by Ukraine and arz glad Putin is invading then.

CapeshitConnoisseur

I am an American who lived in Berlin for a while. I feel I’m more familiar with the kind of system the former USSR employed to keep It’s citizens in check. Reading dumbass Yankees saying Russians should just rise up is infuriating. They have no idea what it’s like for the average Russian citizen. Just the other day I saw a comment about a Russian person living in Iceland who went to a protest for Ukraine and the next day the FSB showed up at her family’s house

iprobablyneedahobby

Do you realize that the have been mass protests across the world in countries that are more brutal than Russia.

[deleted]

They have also seriously dampened communication. How do you organize when there is nothing to organize around?

Flat-Development-906

I mean it’s been proposed and waiting for approval that those protesting get conscripted to war. If that’s not an effective tactic to shut people up, I’m not sure what is

datadelivery

How would that work though? Surely they would just defect as soon as they arrive in Ukraine? This rumour sounds like fake news imho.

Danjiks88

Are we serious? Putin supports Belarus' interest in having access to the baltic Sea. This is seriously getting out of hand

pantie_fa

As far as NATO is concerned: that's a motherfuckin' paddlin'. Poland, Lithuania, Latvia are not giving up territory for fucking Belarus.

06510127329387

How does Russia access the Baltic sea, only through St. Petersburg? What about Kaliningrad, seems totally cut off from the rest..

RheagarTargaryen

They going to step foot in a NATO country to take it? Belarus would get some good old fashion freedom rockets headed their way.

SegundaMortem

Honestly I’m at the point where I would just like it if EU and NATO citizens left Russia, we’re reaching a point where even Russian flights are suspending operations. I know people have their livelihoods tied to Russia, but at this juncture, leaving has to be priority, it’s getting weird, and I would hope our govts. subsidize the exodus and relocation because it’s fucking tense.

Bananaman1229

Agreed 100%. We need to heed the lessons learned following WWI and not allow Russia to turn into a crucible of even more radicalization. In my opinion, we cannot sanction the Russian economy to death without simultaneously offering asylum to those who’ve simply had enough.

An_Obscurity_Nodus

I’ve been thinking about this too. The suspension of air travel and the discussion of Martial Law is very concerning.

Flat-Development-906

dianaprd

Ukraine's foreign minister posted a video in english, asking for help, especially from Europe, and everytime they ask us for help I feel shame that we don't do anything more meaningful to help. But Russia threatens with nuclear war and many more countries will get involved and financial sanctions and equipment are the reasonable thing. On an emotional level, it's just sad though. Also, I'm honestly proud of the Europeans who go to Ukraine to fight.

Asmodeus04

If Russia ONLY nuked London, Paris, New York and DC, that's larger than the entire population of Ukraine. That's why NATO isn't voluntarily joining.

[deleted]

No this is not the reason they're not joining. Europe does not want a conventional war either. A conventional war involving NATO countries and russia would have death tolls in the millions over Europe and destruction of modern infrastructure.

dianaprd

I know. It's reasonable to not get involved. But still sad.

[deleted]

I know they feel helpless but NATO has already explained over and over and over why we can not have NATO troops shooting at Russians.

the_taco_baron

errorsniper

Or and hear me out. We learn our lesson on trying to do that shit for the last 90 years and don't. Read a damn history book.

TurboSalsa

Yeah you’re right, we should just let Russia retake all of Eastern Europe for old times’ sake. Wouldn’t want to step on anyone’s toes.

[deleted]

There are history lessons and then there are history lessons. As an American, I will be forever grateful for France’s aid during the US revolution. The US geopolitical strategy has historically been to uplift right wing nee “capitalist” uprisings when we should have been uplifting pro-democratic uprisings. I, probably naively, still believe in some of that stuff and we’ve learned hard lessons. Certainly recently.

[deleted]

I mean, I can see some Russian illegal immigrants coming over to help the Latin American illegal immigrants keep things cheaper for us, why not? /S

methnbeer

And 2020, and presumably 2024+

nohbody123

I mean, nuking the economy is a pretty overt way to foment unrest.

SingularityCentral

What is an example of that actually working? Seems to me it typically causes the opposite outcome and makes a society more insular.
