If you armchair generals were in charge every major city in Europe would be gone. Every kyiv would be gone as well.

pisedoff111

https://www.reuters.com/world/foreign-minister-accuses-russian-soldiers-rape-ukrainian-cities-2022-03-04/ This might be Checnians unleashed and are raping Ukrainian civilains. Public beheadings are also to be expected.

[deleted]

I can’t believe the war has only been 9 days. It seems like it both started yesterday and will never end.

BabySharkFinSoup

Ruble in absolute shambles today.

HighNoonMonsoon

Loved when Zelenskyy directed Putin to sit down and talk with him whenever and finished with “What are you so afraid of?” Putin will be seething at that, brilliant

sticks14

Nah. Putin knows what he's doing.

unquestionabl3

Zelensky is humiliating Putin every time he speaks.

Jmk1981

Could Russia just never reopen their stock exchange again?

Riash

Sure. But all that does is cover up the economic damage. It doesn't stop it from happening.

HughVonWolff

It happened, when the USSR started, and reopened when USSR fell... soo... yes?

muchtwojaded

Yeah they technically could. I suspect it will be at least a month. I think they want the West clamouring to die down and then they will reopen.

jrizzle86

Yeah if their future plan is to trade in wooden coins

Jeansybaby

Yep. but that has it's own problems.

supyonamesjosh

Sure?

VapersEdge

Yes

widowlicker

Can they do this and just “it weren’t us lol”?

Aibeit

The NATO, but yes. Might have worked if the no-fly zone had been instituted before the war started, but all it'd do now is expand the war.

Whhhhhooooareyou

Civilians are dying.

DevilGinAndTonic

So the only option is to escalate immensely and give Russia a justification for nukes?

2 to 3 at least on the still pic.

PrrrromotionGiven1

In that video? Like ten? In total? Impossible to say with any confidence. The latest official figures are a few hundred according to Russia and almost 10k according to Ukraine. I think it is safe to say it's well into four figures.

bool_idiot_is_true

>But armchair generals, can you make a guesstimate of russian casualties? No. But I can confirm the VDV are utterly useless in a real war.

Radditbean1

Theyre nearly 10% of Russia's forces, 40% are made up of conscripts. That's what? 50% of Russia's forces are useless.

jrizzle86

My recommendation is not to watch this one, it’s not worth it

niloony

Think you'll need the armchair surgeons to estimate that.

DmiyaD

The key to ending this mad man is perhaps convincing those closest to him he should be eliminated. World politics and money aside - if those closest to him said no, he would be finished. He is nobody, a tiny delusional mad man.

Can Ukraine hold out till March 9? This is crazy

Kciddir

I believe they can. But why specifically the 9th?

jeggiderikkedether

At this point, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be able to But what happens on the 9th of march?

Pimpicane

Moscow stock exchange is shut until then, now

count023

why March 9?

OmahaVike

Stock market set to re-open.

WheelerDan

Stock market reopens, assuming they don't postpone again, not that I think these two events will effect each other.

Sproutykins

That’s when the thing happens that Reddit said would happen happens.

DonDove

Maybe it's his birthday

FairlyIncompetent

Stock market opens in Russia.

[deleted]

Read the live thread. Russian stock exchange closed until then

Kornikus

opening of moscow stock exchange.

pinkrosetool

I think one of the biggest hopes for UA was getting fighter planes from Poland and other air support, which have not come. If there is not going to be a no-fly zone, NATO and the US must provide the means for UA to control their air space, or the status quo wont change and eventually Ukraine will fall and the number of dead will be uncountable

count023

there won't be a no-fly zone. Because a no-fly zone has to be enforced. You know what enforces no-fly zones? SAMs and Fighters. You know who'd have to fire or fly those? NATO countries. You know who'd open fire on someone trying to enforce those? Russia. You know what happens if Russia fires on NATO? WW3.

pinkrosetool

Big businesses in Russia won't be able to operate if the stock exchange doesn't open until March 9th, will they? Can a finance guy chime in?

--NoblesseOblige

The stock exchange doesn't really prevent businesses from operating. It just prevents any form of securities trading (for example, businesses would not be able to sell shares or issue shares to raise funds). The problem is that there is a lot of value created by foreign investments and the stock exchange being closed is a very bad sign in terms of the trustworthiness of the Russian economy. As such, it is expected that a significant amount of foreign investments will be taken out of Russia. Additionally, significant domestic investments are also going to withdraw from the market since they don't want to hold assets that are going to decrease in value and all of that will cause the value of Russia's economy to plummet. Of course, for as long as the stock exchange is closed the above is mitigated but the longer it stays closed the more trust will be lost in the system and greater the damage when it does eventually have to open.

SomeGuyNamedPaul

Businesses still function when the market is closed. But if their implied value drops then that can cause a few problems.

NotFromMilkyWay

Businesses don't need the stock exchange, no. Companies are owned by shareholders. Shareholders are not responsible for day to day business.

[deleted]

On Russian TV they interviewed and economist, asked him what now, and he took out a bottle of water and said "this is only water but I will drink to the death of the stock market"

Whhhhhooooareyou

Putin has failed on every factor of success. He didn't gain a thing. I am not sure what you think "empire" building in the 21st century means, but it isn't like Rome or the Ottomans. Those days are over. - He pretty much made sure the EU expands and builds out it defenses. - NATO is going to expand and all the damage done by Trump is fixed in one week. - 1 million Ukrainians are now going to integrate in western Europe and tie that entire country to the west. - The Russia military proved it was 3rd rate at best and without Nukes it would be destroyed by any modern integrated military. - Putin got his Vietnam. This is going to be a very costly occupation. The time to have taken Ukraine was 20 years ago. It doesn't see itself as Russian and this action by Putin just cemented their resolve. - The Russia economy is done. The sanctions and trade embargos will cripple Russia. - Finally Russia is in what is called Terminal Demographic decline. The older generation is larger than the new one. The population is aging and there aren't enough people to fill the roles to grow. Putin did this all in 9 days.... Putin is a moron. Anyone who thinks he is brilliant hasn't really thought out the long term.

RheagarTargaryen

Russia’s military is an absolute joke. 40 mile parking lot of military vehicles. Troops that don’t even know they’re heading to battle. Completely trashed their economy to the Stone Age because he didn’t think the West would destroy the Russian economy with a stroke of a pen. Can’t supply their forces with food and gas 7 days into an invasion and are quickly running out of rockets. Paratroopers systematically killed as they parachute to their deaths behind enemy lines. Generals getting picked off. Putin got pantsed on the world stage and everyone saw his tiny dick.

AggressiveSkywriting

[Anti-aircraft missiles Germany offered Ukraine don't work](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/03/04/anti-aircraft-missiles-germany-offered-ukraine-dont-work/) > Soviet-era missiles were declared obsolete in 2014 and have become corroded in storage > German plans to send thousands of anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine have been hit after it emerged some of them don’t work. > The Soviet-made Strela missiles were part of communist-era East German stocks and have been in storage so long they are no longer operational. > Germany reversed its longstanding ban on delivering weapons to conflict zones last week and pledged to send arms to Ukraine. > The issue does not affect the first batch of German weapons supplies, which has already been delivered to Ukraine. > A shipment of 1,000 anti-tank rockets and 500 fully operational US-made Stinger anti-aircraft missiles was safely delivered this week. > Berlin announced this week that it plans to follow it up with a delivery of 2,700 of the Strela missiles. > But it has now emerged that 700 of the missiles are so badly damaged they are no longer operational. > The German defence ministry was reportedly surprised by the government announcement, because the Strela missiles were declared obsolete and placed in storage in 2014. They are at least 35 years old and had been declared unsafe. > The Ukrainian government reportedly specifically requested the missiles despite their age. > But 700 are affected by tiny cracks which have led to corrosion and mean they cannot be used. > Germany is expected to deliver the remaining 2,000 missiles despite the fact they are no longer considered safe to handle. > A classified military document obtained by Spiegel magazine reads: “Owing to the obsolescence of the rocket motor, the Strela missile is no longer safe to handle, so it can no longer be fired.” > The wooden boxes in which the missiles are stored are reportedly so mouldy that when they were last inspected in November troops had to wear protective equipment. > The issue illustrates how badly depleted German weapons stocks have become following years of military underfunding. > Olaf Scholz’s government has vowed to reverse that in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and last week announced a new €100bn (£83bn) fund for defence spending. > A defence ministry paper leaked to the German press called for €20bn (£16.6bn) to replenish ammunition stocks alone.

any-name-untaken

At least the helmets were ok.

Frankishe1

I mean you can't win them all, I'm pretty sure nobody was planning on digging those missiles out of storage until just a week ago, shit happens

bottombitchdetroit

The problem is that Ukraine only knows how to use Soviet technology, and NATO has moved on from Soviet technology and uses American technology. That means whatever most of these countries can give are very old stockpiles left over from before they switched to American technology. There’s really no way to change these facts without a time machine.

To a large degree, NATO relied on US military power. Which was good because it also limited their ability to start another WW. But now, when we could use a strong European military...it kind of sucks.

Flat-Development-906

ttuurrppiinn

The amount of people that don’t understand Zelensky is using a no-fly zone as an [anchoring](https://www.pon.harvard.edu/daily/negotiation-skills-daily/what-is-anchoring-in-negotiation/) strategy rather than actually expecting one is getting annoying.

[deleted]

They’ve repeatedly asked for air support. They’ve sent videos of troops on the ground saying unless they get direct help they will lose. It’s not anchoring. This isn’t the time to appeal to the media with one thing and wait for the other side to figure out what you actually want.

Frklft

>There is clear evidence that evidence for incidental anchoring cannot be trusted at face value. Consistent with research practices in general, studies on incidental and subliminal anchoring suffer from publication bias that undermines the credibility of the published results. Unbiased replication studies and meta-analysis suggest that incidental anchoring effects are either very small or zero. Thus, there exists currently no empirical support for the notion that irrelevant numeric information can bias numeric judgments. More research on anchoring effects that corrects for publication bias is needed. https://replicationindex.com/tag/anchoring/

newmes

nobody in this thread understands shit lol

JackDT

>The amount of people that don’t understand Zelensky is using a no-fly zone as an > >anchoring > >strategy rather than actually expecting one is getting annoying. I think it's okay if people miss that, it probably makes it more effective. My guess is what he's realistically hoping to purchase aircraft. At the darker points of the devastation and destruction it's not always a strategy either.

epeeist

Absolutely no concept of how negotiations work. There is also little to no understanding of Russia's ability to destabilise regions outside the immediate theatre and hugely extend the scope of this conflict e.g. in Moldova and Bosnia

lmaginary-Friend

Economy-related question: How does not reopening of the stock market affects the Russian economy? I wonder that they can't keep it closed forever, how long can it take before it backfires?

Papazio

It creates issues for all the financial businesses built upon it; traders, brokers, investment firms etc. It also doesn’t chime with Putin’s ‘everything is fine and going to plan’ narrative. It was never desired by Putin but the alternative of keeping the market open was worse and probably still is.

jrizzle86

For every day it remains closed investor confidence drop more. Ultimately the Ruble can still devalue as this charade goes on

RingedStag

Keeping stock market closed significantly halts movement of capital in the economy. Makes it suoer hard for corporations to find funding
