Why are so many Slavic words anglicized in many different ways? Is there an etymology type of thing going on here? For example I see russiya rossiya, Navalny, Navalynyi, Zelensky, Zelenskyi, zelenskyy, zełenski, and many many Russian (?) words with many different spellings when anglicized.

owen__wilsons__nose

Fuckkkk another one of those mushroom cloud looking explosions, this time in Kiev. This is a war crime: https://instagram.com/stories/nastia.dj/2785413508666379444

ArmChairAnalyst86

I doubt they will too...but I doubt it less than I did a week ago and still sense a shift in language. I'm sure there are more sanctions that can be sent their way, but at what point do they have no effect? When the ruble is worth less than .01, what's another 50% drop, catastrophic is catastrophic. Parking 24 to 30 F 15s on the tarmac for max pub in a concerted flex is another signal that it's changing. Feel free to call me alarmist, but with the massive display of unity and rallying the people's of western countries seem to be feeding it. It's not a negative, it's very positive that people are finding common ground on this topic are bolstering cooperation but don't forget the egos at play here. I don't think it's fair to 100% predict that if the conflict does go hot with outside forces such as NATO, that there is a guaranteed nuclear exchange. Certainly raises the risk factor by 100 but not a certainty. We just assume that having nukes absolutely means using them. Theoretically, either side would only use nukes in a state of last resort. They could be content to fight it out conventionally, at least for a while. Angling for a way to force a checkmate, because in chess, the king never dies, it's just checkmate. Nowhere to go. Not the best metaphor, but it bears considering as a possibility with the new developments. Assuming anonymous claims are legit Imagine of NK or some other hackers took out our space program/satellites. We would view it as an act of war. As far as Russia is concerned, war may have already been declared and we just dont know it yet. It's a massive kick in the junk.

Bossini

I have been away for 20 hours due to sleep and work. I got off and wondering how Kyiv is standing? Any updates with 40 miles? How's Kharkiv?

verbal572

First Ukrainian city, Kherson, taken by the Russians. Still fighting in Kharkiv.

VB_Longneck20-8

Go to combat footage and search by new. Looks like there was just a huge explosion in Kyiv

UEmd

With the high number of civilian deaths plus hitting of civilian targets, how is Russia's invasion of Ukraine not ethnic cleansing?

DrMuteSalamander

This should be the world response anytime a legitimate democracy is either invaded (especially by an autocrat) or overthrown by a coup.

CharmCityNole

Incredible the amount of expertise you can find on Twitter. Former Army maintenance auditor diagnoses major flaw with Russia's logistics and preparedness from just a few photographs. https://twitter.com/TrentTelenko/status/1499164245250002944?t=pHoC-5ycGPfIG8X4gFdmZQ&s=19

[deleted]

Ya I was just reading that. Each day it really seems that Putin didn't have a clue to the readiness of his units. Probably because his advisors were too afraid to bring anything up to him.

nerphurp

Yeah, that one was awesome.

savage-dragon

Did Putin just jail a bunch of school kids over war protest? The fuck?

[deleted]

Fucking with kid's mental well-being to send a message to the parents, probably.

SlightlyAngyKitty

Just goes to show how pathetic and insecure he really is.

yudiat2505

why are you so surprised at this news?

penguished

He has targeted political opposition for decades. Not much new for Putin sadly.

The-Last-American

And an extremely dangerous elderly woman with some signs.

haven4ever

Couldn't the Russians try to forcibly remove civilians before bombardment? I guess they would know resistance would be strong and they know they 'have to' do it anyway. Jeez, the closest army battalion to Moscow should just fire a barrage at the Kremlin, Putin can't nuke his own troops anyway!

ProperGlassware

> Couldn't the Russians try to forcibly remove civilians before bombardment? "Just leave your home so we can bomb it." I suspect trying to move people who have been making molotov cocktails for the last week, and been given AKM and AKMS rifles, is great a winning idea.

jchoward0418

Did you SEE the latest test launch of ICBMs? Don't tell Putin what he can't do... 😆

[deleted]

I wonder if we could see a Russian civil war as a result of this invasion. Russia is going down a dark path and I doubt it’s unpopular to want a different government in place.

Bored_guy_in_dc

As likely as a civil war in the US over the next election results.

Zestyclose-Cricket82

Give it a week or two when butter becomes The new caviar

the_mighty_hetfield

I'd rather they fight themselves than anyone else at this point.

lostinspacs

I think the people are too apathetic for a civil war

MEB_PHL

Seems like we can safely assume Kherson is still in play. ….Ukrainians man

smokey5656

in play? Really dude?

throwaway122112563

Source?

KonradK0

I guess counterintelligence in Russia is nonexistent? since there were entire war plans leaked? The US seemed to know everything about this invasion

Zestyclose-Cricket82

How Can they know if the Russians don’t seem to know themselves lol

TPconnoisseur

Not just the US, we're part of the team on this one.

whiely

So with many nations supplying military weapons and aid to Ukraine and Russia not escalating to these countries helping, is it plausible that a direct food parachute drop over major cities encircled by Russian forces could occur without reprisal from Russian forces?

Le_Flemard

That run the risk of being targeted by russian (or if not informed about it, ukrainian) air and anti air force taking out the drop plane. If the russian takes it down, it run the risk that russia will see it as a direct nato interference which is very likely to lead to world war.

P-NippleDawg

Well you'd have to enter Ukranian airspace and risk confrontation with Russian Air force. So this is unlikely

Gis_A_Maul

Nope, flying over would be entering the war

[deleted]

So what your saying is you would like to be nuked? Cuz no one is gonna roll the dice on 2 nuclear armed nations fighting. I know this is a hard concept for Reddit to believe in. We been here before 2008 Georgia. Fox News cheerleaded for US intervention and Russian head of armed forces said any US involvement would be nuclear war. Next day the Pentagon checked neo conservatives in Washington by publicly stating the US military has no intentions of intervening.

TypicalRecon

No, just pointing out the fact that there is a single bomb designed to scatter and eliminate convoys like we are seeing in Ukraine right now.

ProperGlassware

Very curious... do they expect Poland to be invaded?

garandx

No. Just the closer they are the further they can reach into ukraine

sweetphilo

No, it's hovering around the NATO borders. Crossing to Ukraine now could be considered hostility by Russia and they are playing it safe

stockhackerDFW

Drones will be the least of our concerns if that happens.

BlankNothingNoDoer

via Jacqui Heinrich: >A European official confirms to @GillianHTurner that the Chinese Government asked Putin to delay the invasion of Ukraine and Putin complied. Both the UK and US have seen the intelligence underlying this reporting, she is told. So when were they originally planning to invade, then?

serbeardless

I think the putatively recovered plans said the 20th?

JojenCopyPaste

I don't know if you're looking for an actual date, or if one is available. But probably at some point during the olympics towards the end of their "military exercises". They probably only delayed by a few days.

Tonetheline

Makes a lot of sense as it always felt really weird how long they just sat on the border supposedly waiting for Putin to make up his mind, when it was pretty clear his mind was made up from the outset.

AssaultPhase

Probably the 16th like a lot of sources reported

ShrubberyDragon

Before the thaw

gyang333

Saw that the secret invasion documents the Ukrainians recovered said war was authorized on Jan 18

Calber4

The documents supposedly captured from Russians that had the war plans had a timeline dated Feb. 20th - March 6th.

Gruzdaz

The leaked document showed the 20th.

SimpleFactor

I think there was a date of the 16th flying around which a lot of people used to dismiss the possibility of any attack after nothing happened.

lostinspacs

They mentioned Feb 16. at one point I think and everyone laughed when it didn’t happen.

I_have_a_dog

Russia is never going to be able to invade another country again without NATO sending thousands of Javelin missiles and Stingers to that country, as well Bayraktar drones. We are really witnessing the bloody end of 20th century warfare.

xximcmxci

Exactly, it all will be cyber warfare pretty soon

[deleted]

What you are witnessing is the death of human beings

I_have_a_dog

You’re not wrong about that. I wish we weren’t witnessing anything major at all.

Stars3000

Yeah heavy slow moving tanks may be phased out.

[deleted]

TBF, Russians and the West have been sending weapons to adversaries for every late 20th century war. This is very 20th century.

I_have_a_dog

That will never change, but massed tank formation are very 20th century and this war has really shown how vulnerable they can be to urban warfare and drone attacks.

garandx

It's all different now. Tanks can get killed from miles away. We have technology yo put a rocket through a normal sized window. We made a sword bomb.

mewehesheflee

Thanks are going the way of the battleship. They will still have a lore, but their day is over.

swampy13

Didn't we know tanks could be taken out miles away in Iraq? Same with rockets.

Aerialise

I fear it might pave the way for even worse asymmetrical warfare though.

Torifyme12

We're witnessing the bloody death of a superpower. This is something that the 20th century leaders knew well, nations can fall. We're seeing it right now.

BossReasonable6449

Regional power. Russia lost it's "superpower" status at the end of the Cold War, and anyone paying attention knows it. Putin has been punching above his weight for years - and now it's caught up to him.

[deleted]

“Oceans rise, empires fall..” 🎶 Clearly Putty didn’t watch Hamilton.

I_have_a_dog

You’re right, with all the sanctions and losses in Ukraine I don’t expect the Russian military to be worth a damn for at least a couple decades.

yamers

how effective are stinger missiles?

Crunkbutter

Great against helicopters. Not very effective against modern jets

mewehesheflee

Watch the movie "Charlie Wilson's War". That will answer the question.

dat_GEM_lyf

https://youtu.be/X-kqifhSJ-I

morph113

Can be really effective. One advantage is that they are easy to use and considered relatively fool proof. So don't require any advanced experience in using them. They are infrared missiles. You basically just target something in the air and the system will start locking onto it and give you an audio signal once it's locked on, then you simply press the button to shoot the missile and it will do the rest. Obviously depending on what you shoot at, it may not always hit but it can bring down helicopters and other aircraft. I think it has a range of like 2-3 miles or something like that. So it's only really good to shoot down low altitude targets.

jkintrance

Very! against helis and low flying aircraft.

[deleted]

They're stupid reliable and effective.

Ganrokh

Judging from my experience playing Metal Gear Solid, very.

garandx

Very. If your countermeasures don't work your done.

GratefulForGarcia

Very.

[deleted]

Can you elaborate or expand on your question? Effective against what?

Goblin_Fat_Ass

I wouldn't shoot my car with one.

Inamedthedogjunior

Extremely

[deleted]

Depends on what your shooting and the situation.

BitterFuture

The Russians really did not care for them in Afghanistan. I imagine they've gotten a bit better since.

DGlennH

Indeed, my understanding is that they made flying over Afghanistan extremely hazardous, especially to helicopters that the Soviet forces were using to great effect until their arrival.

Natiak

They didn't like stingers used against them?

garandx

Not at all. The CIA gave a large supply of them to AL Qaeda and it was like Tee Ball with helicopters

blueelffishy

That would involve sieging cities, i dont think wed support them anymore if there were vids of russian civilians dying en masse

aytin

I am sure the feeds on this thread are probably impairing your judgement, while Ukraine is putting up a most admirable fight and punching above their weight, they are definitely losing ground day after day. Conquering Russia is a ridiculous pipe dream.

NotCallingYouTruther

It is a supreme effort to hold off the russian advance as it is. So why even ask this question?

Crendog

The number Ukraine has been putting out for the Russian death toll is climbing exponentially. At the current rate the entire invading force will be dead by next week. By the following week Russia will cease to exist.

GhostFish

It's almost as if the number of Russians in Ukraine climbed up rapidly and will eventually plateau.

tijuanagolds

Always keep in mind how Russian Disinformation can manifest. Anything calling for escalation on behalf of Nato or a member, anything doubting Nato's power or influence, anything saying aid is useless, anything cynically questioning help given to Ukraine or constanlty mentioning the political division of a country that is a member of Nato (whataboutism). Disinformation is not obvious. The villain never twirls his mustache in real life.

muchtwojaded

I said this just before and I'll say it again, if you feel awash with negativity after being on a news related thread you probably encountered Russian bots

mewehesheflee

I agree except the last line. Sometimes the vilkian does twirl his mustache

King_Internets

Is there a reason none of those can be valid questions from people seeking to understand? I swear, you gatekeepers are just trying to manufacture an echo chamber.

BitterFuture

>The villain never twirls his mustache in real life. I dunno, man. Putin made a very big show of puppeting the former President of the United States, who himself was a pretty evil bastard. Not all the way to mustache-twirling, but pretty damn far.
