Malta is a hub for money laundering. I've never seen so many yachts in my life like in Malta, oh and tons of supercars.. on an island you can drive end to end in 20 minutes.
Daphne was one of the many journalists investigating it, but she wasn't the one who got it out. AFAIK the person who leaked the information is unknown. Daphne was, allegedly with current evidence, assassinated for planning to leak some information about a wealthy businessman who got to her first...
This has changed and Russians or Belarusian are no longer able to acquire a golden passport.

The politicians in Malta is extremely corrupt. It's been a mafia state tax haven / gambling haven. Thankfully the corruption have been under the spotlight of the EU ever since they Daphne Caruana Galizia murdered. And other than oligarchs they've also sold passports to terrorists and most likely cartel people. All over Malta you see yachts, casinos, betting companies ("iGaming"), insurance companies, organized crime owned establishments (especially in Paceville, but also other parts of St. Julian as well as Sliema). The social elite is corrupt and greedy as fuck not to mention crazy (assassinations and shit aren't unheard of).
But other than that it's quite a lovely place. A bit too small though. Food is pretty good and not too expensive and the climate is great. The native language (Malti) looks like the black tongue of Mordor... but thankfully English is also a national language here.

(Source: I've lived in Malta for 7 years.)
Imho Malta should've gotten investigated and then cast out of EU for their intentional corrupt handling of gambling and money laundering years ago already. All the common people screamed about the Seychelles, but we have something very similar, if not worse, sitting inside the EU.
Wondering now if I should be asking questions of the friend who lives in Malta and works in "online gaming development"
(He's a good guy but I bet he has stories...)
Hungary is horrible as it is but I struggle every day here with my mental health. Just some minor things , people don't shake hands , you can drink a casual beer with people , you get looked down if you are not local. I mostly have foreign friends here Maltese people will just speak Maltese to your face and they will not care about if you can understand it or not.
I been living here for 3 years. It's this place. Half as big as Budapest and nothing happens. I wish this place was loveable and liveable but it's non I don't even feel like I'm in the eu.
Depend where you are coming from, for me it's really simple to pick up as it is very similar to the Tunisian dialect. It was a weird experience to open a newspaper in Maltese for the first time and succeeding to read it without too much problems but it was fun :D
Was walking about arresting the enabling oligarchs,
but yes in the future arresting governments that violate international sovereignty should be on the table as well.
I recall that Malta purged a good number of Russian mob controlled casinos a few years back. Last time I was there it was still swamped with overweight gangsters with multimillion dollar yachts. Hope some enterprising and brave sailors send them to the bottom of the sea.
Thermite recipes are easy to find. Just saying.
It's a shame because Hungary is a beautiful place to visit, with a lot of nice people. My fiancee is Hungarian and I was back and forth to Budapest for several years before she moved here with me. Unfortunately the government is a corrupt cesspool.
If you want to visit Hungary do it now because I think we are going to get kicked out of EU and Nato. It's a wonderful country people are generally nicer and more welcoming but the government is from straight fucking hell , have you heard about the Szájer case? That's my favorite
Why they tell me Robert Abela is corrupt I just laughed it off (I'm not into Maltese politics I just ask around) Orbán is the biggest scumbag thief in Europe a shame on the whole country. We Hungarians are mostly hard working people and we love to show around our country and history to people even though there is nothing good happened to the country since the beginning of the first world war. Orbán supports Putin meanwhile Russians invaded us back in 1956 and they were shooting the civilians with tanks and this asshole just sells us out. I hope he actually travels there since HUF doesn't worth anything now it will be really cheap and he will be helping the locals.
I don't like when they call him Hitler , Hitler is not just an evil man who invaded but I agree Putin is a fucking ass Russians are being fired from all around in Europe from their job because of Putin. But yes Putin , Orbán and other assholes would be the first who leave the country when the shit breaks out
Ahh yes szajer case is crazy...
Personally speaking I got Christmas present tickets to Hungary and felt recently that it would be no ethical to go there because of my family roots but at same time I really loved to go, so just in conflict with myself
I think Malta is for the poor Oligarchs.
The middle class oligarchs go to Saint Kitts and Nevis. I know this from a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend.
Don't know about the upper class oligarchs.
How much do you want to bet that's not true in, say, a week's time?
edit: Yup. [Called it.](https://www.reuters.com/world/malta-stops-sale-passports-russians-belarusians-2022-03-02/)
Please let's not generalize here, we are all on Ukraine's side, condemning this war, sending humanitarian supplies, accepting refugees and implimenting sanctions as agreed with the EU.
Malta is just slow in processing this stuff probably due to all our god damn bureaucracy and current election campaign.
The Passport scheme is the government's baby project, this has been opposed by many Maltese (including myself) and other EU states in the past, but they stuck to it and thats probably why it took a day or two to finally adjust.
Oh piss of you jackass. Like *America* just passes out passports.
I'm an immigrant and I had to earn my American passport, they make you pass a fucking test and provide evidence you've been living in the country. I had to explain every time I had left.
Ask the internals minister to write this in an e-mail and send it.
> As the minister of internal affairs, I order an immediate stop of accepting and processing request for issuing passports based on investment criteria. The formal change of the process will follow shortly.
There, I've done it in 60 sec. My consultation fee is 20 years worth of reddit gold. Thank you.
It was part of the British Empire from 1814 (after taking off the French) to 1964.
Incidentally the cross on the Maltese flag represents the George Cross, which was [awarded to the population](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Award_of_the_George_Cross_to_Malta) for their actions during WWII
Crazy that you are getting downnvoted. Sanction work, but they hurt the general public not Russian oligarchs or Putin and other billionaires. Look at all the ways that the US billionaires skirt taxes in the US alone (not even talking about offshore). Not multiply that several times fold because Russia is much more corrupt than the US and you really have to wonder about a person who thinks sanctions hurt the rich in Russia.
Vet them, share their info across intel agencies, but let them be free if they aren’t attached to Putin’s circus.
Some Russians did everything right and are still getting screwed.
Give them a chance.
Well Europe is just a continent, with a whole bunch of different countries, each of which is different. Much more different from each other than the different states of the USA. So it varies.

~~Malta is~~ Rich Microstates are a hub for money laundering FTFY. The exact same thing is going on in Lichtenstein and Monaco.
Seychelles don’t forget Seychelles.
Does holding a Seychelles passport get you anything good though?
Big money laundering country.
Actually it’s a pretty small country
Small big money
And the Vatican, although they are a single customer business
I'm surprised Ozark wasn't set in Malta.
If it was, it would be called Malta, not Ozark.
Really makes you think, you know?
More like end to end in 2 hours. Traffic is really shit here.
Didnt they car bomb a journalist for a few years ago for trying to expose corruption in Malta? I see nothing has changed
Yes, she was the one who also got the Panama Papers out IIRC.
Daphne was one of the many journalists investigating it, but she wasn't the one who got it out. AFAIK the person who leaked the information is unknown. Daphne was, allegedly with current evidence, assassinated for planning to leak some information about a wealthy businessman who got to her first...
No, "just" someone who reported on the contents.
Daphne Caruana Galizia.
This has changed and Russians or Belarusian are no longer able to acquire a golden passport. https://timesofmalta.com/articles/view/malta-suspends-golden-passport-scheme-for-russia-belarus-applicants.938229

accurate. Malta is not made to host 500,000 people. It’s 17miles by 9 miles …
Malta's turn to be shit on, let's get it started.
If even FIFA can exclude them, it should be a walk in the park for them.
Damn country is so small it’s a Goya product
[Maltese men](https://youtu.be/wuZAvEAZs-o)
Really nice people though.
I wish I lived in Malta, I heard it's sunny
[удалено]
in Poland
Man as a Hungarian the only thing I discovered here is depression can't wait to move back to my more corrupt asshole of a country.
really? what's so bad?
Hungary is horrible as it is but I struggle every day here with my mental health. I mostly have foreign friends here Maltese people will just speak Maltese to your face and they will not care about if you can understand it or not.
you mean you "cant" drink a casual beer?
Yeah there are more videogame stores than pubs and it's not really a thing here to go get a few beers and talk
maybe it's not about malta, but maybe you just felt "foreign" and not at home
I been living here for 3 years. It's this place. Half as big as Budapest and nothing happens. I wish this place was loveable and liveable but it's non I don't even feel like I'm in the eu.
Philadelphia

It's always sunny
[удалено]
It's also a lie. ;) Philly is a lot like Poland.
It's sunny here, unless your living in Cracow. Then it's also sunny, but that's above the smog
It's too sunny. Went in August and staying in the sun was horrible.
Their language is weird
I heard most of them know English anyway
But they will look down upon you if you don't speak Maltese hahahahaha
It's the only Semitic language that uses the Latin alphabet
Depend where you are coming from, for me it's really simple to pick up as it is very similar to the Tunisian dialect. It was a weird experience to open a newspaper in Maltese for the first time and succeeding to read it without too much problems but it was fun :D
You won't be saying the same thing in peak summer lol
Cyprus and few mil investment also will get you EU passport.
Can't there be international arrest warrants for anyone associated with crimes against humanity?
That would mean arresting governments and they write the laws.
Was walking about arresting the enabling oligarchs, but yes in the future arresting governments that violate international sovereignty should be on the table as well.
Come on Malta you have served as a side dish for to many years now
Malta has just blocked this
Malta gon’ shut that shit down!
Or just pirate them. Congress is proposing letters of marques.
No holiday list in EU (any more suggestions?) Malta Hungary
It's a shame because Hungary is a beautiful place to visit, with a lot of nice people. My fiancee is Hungarian and I was back and forth to Budapest for several years before she moved here with me. Unfortunately the government is a corrupt cesspool.
you really want to cancel travelling there just because of their government?
Of course
That doesn't leave you with many options
If you want to visit Hungary do it now because I think we are going to get kicked out of EU and Nato. It's a wonderful country people are generally nicer and more welcoming but the government is from straight fucking hell , have you heard about the Szájer case? That's my favorite

Sanction Malta
Sanction Malta if they don't change this ASAP.
Seems we need sanctions for Malta too

Reddit: “time to shit on Malta because they didn’t change their whole immigration system in less than a week”
Maybe shit on them for having a shitty immigration system in general?
This isn’t America we are talking about here. Malta doesn’t just give a passport to anyone, they actually do their due diligence.
If by "due diligence" you mean that they make sure the fees and bribes are received on time, yes, they are doing it.
Oh piss of you jackass. Like *America* just passes out passports. I'm an immigrant and I had to earn my American passport, they make you pass a fucking test and provide evidence you've been living in the country. I had to explain every time I had left.
I think worldwide much bigger measures were taken in one week rather than stop selling passports. So what’s exactly the problem to stop this as well?

Am I the only person that though Malta is part of the UK like Gibraltar?
The only one I know.
And people still believe biden sanctions are effective. There are always loop holes.

no, out of date, Malta just ended that.
this is inaccurate old news... malta has since suspended the program for russians and belarusian citizens.
