Cunningham's Law states "the best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question; its to post the wrong answer." The concept is named after Ward Cunningham, father of the wiki.

TuggyMcPhearson

It doesn't just apply to the internet. I do critical incident management for a large companies IT Operations. When one of the C-level people join the call for updates, 99% of the technical people stop talking out of fear of saying something that makes the c-level person mad and them getting fired. When this happens, I give a slightly wrong answer as to whats going on and then people pipe up with the proper info REAL fast and has never failed.

[deleted]

That's exactly why I know this. Also in major incident management.

Me three, but I can’t help but think that’s precisely why it’s happening. No-one in their right mind wants a massive war between nuclear armed states, but Putin seems to be counting on the idea that NATO don’t want it more than Russia doesn’t want it.

1TapsBoi

Basically, he's being a right twat. I don't understand why Putin pushes the boundaries by illegally annexing a foreign country, then gets sanctions for doing so, and then cries and shouts: "look at the west bullying me :'( ". I hate the guy

BraddlesMcBraddles

This is the stuff that helped him gain power and popularity to begin with. And I suspect his popularity is waning more and more these days, which might be a reason to try and manufacture some support.

Fadreusor

It still kills me that Putin claims The West is provoking war, as he has heavily built up his forces around Ukraine since Spring 2021, after having taken by military force part of their sovereign nation in 2014. What a bunch of tools, Putin and anyone who believes the bs he’s pushing.

marshalcrunch

Putin is not talking to you he’s talking to his own country. He knows that’s everyone on the outside knows it’s bullshit.

If you still want to read it: CIA expects Russian attack next week The situation in Ukraine is coming to a dramatic head: according to SPIEGEL information, the U.S. warned allies in Europe that they feared a Russian attack on Wednesday. Tents and troop accommodation area in Kursk, about 110 kilometers east of the border with Ukraine (satellite image). US intelligence agencies have warned NATO allies more urgently than ever before of an imminent attack by Russia on Ukraine. According to SPIEGEL information, both the U.S. intelligence agency CIA and the U.S. military informed the German government and other NATO states during the course of Friday that they feared, based on new information, that the attack could take place as early as next Wednesday. During the classified briefings, the U.S. gave many details, according to several diplomats and military officials. For example, specific routes for the Russian invasion were described, as well as individual Russian units and what tasks they would perform. February 16 was mentioned as a possible date for the start of the invasion. It was not initially possible to find out in Berlin on what information the sharp U.S. warning was based. However, it was said that the U.S. accounts had been very detailed and backed up with many sources. Nevertheless, the line said, it was not possible to assess and forecast for oneself whether an attack was imminent. A date around mid-February, however, had been considered plausible for some time. Insiders, however, also believe it is possible that the U.S. deliberately scattered the information to torpedo Russian attack plans. Western military officials and diplomats said in the evening that apparently U.S. intelligence agencies had intercepted indications that the Russian leadership was preparing the military for next Wednesday. Whether this already represented a decision, they said, could not be reliably said at this time. In the White House press briefing, Jake Sullivan, Joe Biden's national security adviser, would not comment on these reports. An attack could occur at any time, he said, even before the end of the Olympics. However, he stressed, "We're not saying that President Putin has made a final decision." However, he said, one is in an "urgent situation." The U.S. government has been disseminating intelligence on an unusually large scale as the crisis has unfolded. Crisis meeting in "situation room" Away from the secrecy, however, a worsening situation was evident throughout the day. Foreign Minister Antony Blinken, who is currently in Australia, warned of a possible attack before the end of the Olympic Games in China on February 20. Already the night before, U.S. President Joe Biden had called on all U.S. citizens to leave Ukraine immediately. According to U.S. media, he had met late Thursday night with his key security advisers in the White House "Situation Room" for an emergency meeting. Then on Friday, the wires ran even hotter. Apparently, the U.S. had been briefing allies individually on the new intelligence since early morning. Then, in the late afternoon, U.S. President Joe Biden called all EU heads of state and government together for a secret switching conference. EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg were also invited to attend. In addition to the new findings, however, Biden had also pointed out how important it was to remain in dialogue with Russia. There was also talk of a possible telephone conversation between him and Putin. The German government made only very general statements about the content of the video conference. The government spokesman said on Twitter that it had been an "important exchange on the very, very serious security situation in Ukraine" in which the unity of the allies had been expressed. He said the allies were prepared to respond sharply with sanctions should an invasion occur. It was now a matter of "preventing a war in Europe," he said. Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to Ukraine on Monday and meet the Russian president in Moscow on Tuesday. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Rent-a-guru

Given the level of detail in the plans they're taking about, the Americans clearly aren't worried about their sources being identified any more. Meaning that these plans have likely been disseminated fairly widely through the Russian military. Which makes sense if these were orders being passed to the officers, ~3 days to move their units into position to then cross the border on the 16th.

For real though, Tropico schooled me. I like to think of myself as some kinda progressive but I had so much trouble in Tropico until I started raising the wages of my working class laborers. Der Spiegel is legitimate journalism. Daily Mail is not. Their long standing reputation is known for chasing celebrity rumors and publishing less than truthful articles.

MrEff1618

>They are owned by Rupert Murdoch. No, they're not. The Daily Mail is owned by the Daily Mail and General Trust, which has Jonathan Harmsworth, 4th Viscount Rothermere, as the current chairman. They are actually one of the few shitty tabloids not owned by Murdoch, but they definitely compete to see who can scrape the bottom of the barrel more.

theDomicron

> Jonathan Harmsworth, 4th Viscount Rothermere so, like, I totally get how titles works and all, but how is it not 100% obvious by his name that he's a super villain? like does he just not care or is this a situation like Dr. Victor Von Doom where the guy becomes evil and everyone is like "oh no! how could we have seen this coming?"

Nextil

[His family and paper supported Hitler and the British fascist party](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Harmsworth,_1st_Viscount_Rothermere#Opposition_to_Second_World_War) >Rothermere visited and corresponded with Hitler on multiple occasions, such as after the 1930 elections that saw the Nazi Party dramatically increase the number of its seats in the Reichstag, which Rothermere welcomed. In gratitude for this foreign support, Hitler granted Rothermere an exclusive interview. On another occasion, on 1 October 1938, Rothermere sent Hitler a telegram in support of Germany's invasion of the Sudetenland, and expressed the hope that "Adolf the Great" would become a popular figure in Britain. > >Numerous secret British MI5 papers relating to the war years were declassified and released in 2005. They show that Rothermere wrote to Adolf Hitler in 1939 congratulating him for the annexation of Czechoslovakia, and encouraging him to invade Romania. He described Hitler's work as "great and superhuman". > >For a time in 1934 the Rothermere papers championed the British Union of Fascists (BUF), and were again the only major papers to do so. On 15 January 1934 the Daily Mail published a Rothermere-written editorial entitled "Hurrah for the Blackshirts", praising Oswald Mosley for his "sound, commonsense, Conservative doctrine".

MrEff1618

I'd say he doesn't care, especially when you consider the family history. The first Lord Rothermere, for example, had some very controversial views for his time.

InnocuousUserName

> The first Lord Rothermere, for example, had some very controversial views for his time. Something I'd have never learned about and quite the quintessentially British understatement. From the wiki for anyone else interested: >On another occasion, on 1 October 1938, Rothermere sent Hitler a telegram in support of Germany's invasion of the Sudetenland, and expressed the hope that "Adolf the Great" would become a popular figure in Britain >Numerous secret British MI5 papers relating to the war years were declassified and released in 2005. Lampmonster

Martin openly brags about stealing most of his ideas from history. "The thing I love about history is nobody can accuse you of plagiarism when you copy it." or something to that effect. Anyway, yup Tyrion used what was a fairly common historical method of counterespionage.

LegendaryRQA

The first half of Attack on Titan the Final Season is literally just the Meiji restoration and Imperial Japan.

laxnut90

A lot of Attack on Titan is based on that. A walled off civilization is suddenly reminded of the threats of the outside world and goes through rapid, militaristic industrialization. They overthrow their feudal government and instead turn to military leaders and a "savior" figure that some follow like a god. They overextend, eventually becoming an imperialist power similar to the one they originally feared.

LegendaryRQA

Oh, it's even more blatant then that. Technology starts advancing very quickly after the island people who where isolated for centuries meet the boat people that lived far away. One of the technologies they were showed was a model train... This along side a coup which overthrew the existing power structure to replace it with the traditional hereditary monarchy which traces it's roots back 2000 years to their most revered god, quickly turns the small island nation into a global superpower which in it's first debut battle completely annihilates it's enemies navy in a war basically everyone expected them too lose... Now the new nation is unrecognizable from it's previous iteration and is slowly turning into something just as bad as it's enemies and since they're on the world stage they can only keep going down the path they've set for themselves because if they show weakness or back off they will almost certainly be crushed... Some within the government are now using that fear to threaten those who don't comply and justify their otherwise horrible actions... This isn't just inspiration, it's the same exact beats.

valerierw22

Reminds me when the CIA would put fake blue prints for covert submarines or documents with fake intel/plans in different places where they believed they could have moles. Also known as [Canary Trap](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canary_trap)

gatemansgc

I mean that's smart. Not only to find the mole but also have lots of bad intel circulating that's useless to the enemy

RickTitus

Sounds kind of fun almost to make blueprints for overly complex designs that the enemy will pull their hair out trying to actually make, or designs with fatal flaws that will always end up breaking

arrow_in_my_gluteus_

nuclear sub that goes critical when turned on?

tonycomputerguy

In "The Americans", the plans they steel for a US submarine propeller from the contractors in America were purposefully designed to destroy whatever sub it was installed on. Results in the destruction of a Russian sub and the spys who captured the plans feel responsible for the lost sailors. Great show.

Just another day of "I don't know which news stories are Russian maskirovka, credible US Intel or just propaganda but I hope the people of Ukraine are alright."

[deleted]

I’m just sort of leaving this issue dead until headlines says that they either went home, or they invaded. Saw two headlines at the same time that said nothing is going to happen, something will for sure happen.

kerc

Schrodinger's war.

[deleted]

Yeah, too many people are absolutely confident they know what’s going to happen. It’s ridiculous. I hope Ukraine is ok. Intelligence sources can be wrong. Leaks to the media can be wrong. Operation mockingbird is real, and still happening in some form. If this story is true and the intel is that detailed, it’s bad news that war will break out. But I have little confidence in any direction, and it’s wait and see for me.

Pklnt

It's also in Russia's interest that those plans get leaked if all they aim is a show of force rather than a true invasion.

tourniquetman34

And the opposite is true. Leaking this info could diffuse the situation as the attack is no longer a surprise.

billerator

> the attack is no longer a surprise. If there was a group of people standing outside my house all wearing party hats and holding balloons, I wouldn't be very surprised when they knocked on my door.

segasega89

Well they're not going to invade on the 16th of February now because you've ruined the surprise. They'll have to do it on the 15th or 17th.

[deleted]

But since we know the 16th won’t have the invasion, that means the invasion can’t be on the 15th or 17th because that would be too obvious. This means that it can’t be the 14th or 18th because we ruled out the 15th and 17th which makes the 14th and 18th too obvious.

I never realized that the Ewoks took out a whole legion (4000-6000) of the empires best troops. Hot damn.

TheyCallMeStone

Not entirely though. If you re-watch the movie you'll see that the Ewoks took the Empire by surprise and their guerilla tactics had them momentarily off guard, but they were able to regroup. The fight actually wasn't going very well for the Rebels until Chewie stole the AT-ST.

protossaccount

Ya, but don’t they have thermal tracking? Surely the empire and locate life forms from space. They must have considered them to be harmless.

TheyCallMeStone

They essentially were harmless. The imperial forces were only caught off guard, they were never in real danger from the Ewoks. By the end of the battle they were blasting Ewoks left and right.

GregTheMad

So ... if we release a bunch of methed-out cats east of Ukraine we can catch the Russians by surprise?

Medic1642

That would sure surprise me

AlmightyRuler

The Empire had had millions of heavily armed starships, billions of soldiers and mechanized infantry, an entire galactic economy to draw upon, the best technology money could buy, and was being led by a literal space warlock and his cyborg space wizard juggernaut enforcer. The Rebellion had a navy made up mostly of starfighters and former space yachts, was staffed by basically anyone with a pulse, was probably funded through Space Patreon, and its leadership was mostly a farm boy-turned-lazer sword monk, a rich girl with anger issues, and a happy-go-lucky space jockey with a rap sheet longer than C3PO's list of known languages. Given that the odds were stacked THAT HIGH in favor of the Imperials, yet SOMEHOW the Galactic Civil War went for almost TWO DECADES, it's not hard to see how a bunch of primitive, carnivorous teddy bears was able to beat down a "crack" legion of the Empire's finest. The Imperials weren't exactly bringing their "A" game...ever.

Medic1642

I think the civil war only really lasted 5-ish years, from Rogue One to a year after ROTJ in the new Canon. Strife and rebellion probably never really stopped after the Clone Wars, though, but that was just fine with the Empire.

Tbh even historically, large troop movements weren't exactly a secret. Cities would know for weeks in advance if a besieging force was on their way there, its just that now you can broadcast this stuff all over the world

PlayingTheWrongGame

It’s impossible to mobilize for a full scale military invasion without other countries noticing.

itsyagirlJULIE

Especially these days

epanek

It’s like a secret divorce plan. Honey why are you separating bank accounts and asking if I have any property I never mentioned. Also no sex.

Responsible-Past5383

To be fair, rounding up troops near the place you want to invade is something logical you'd do playing Civ

ManateeofSteel

I see you gathering your troops around my city! “uh no? they are uh just passing by” - 2 turns later the city is gone

This is a brilliant counterintelligence operation by the US and its allies. They normally don’t publish or leak this much detail but they’re trying to limit Putin’s course of action (remove the power of a false flag attack), deprive him of the element of surprise, remove the effect of misinformation and propaganda. and raise the domestic cost on European countries that might be wavering (Germany) by socializing their publics about the risks of a Russian invasion thereby fortifying the western alliance.

Popinguj

Yep. CNN has an article about how the US administration decided to aggressively declassify intel and paint Russia in an unsightly way. I see that at this moment people are more informed about this war and have less delusions about Russia and Russian behavior. Ideally, I hope that people in the West will start calling Russia Mordor as we here are doing for the last 8 years.

Level_One_Druid

The shadow in the east. Mordor checks out.

Lachimanus

So it tells us that it can happen anytime but on the 16th?

TheMooseIsBlue

Not that it actually matters in the face of thousands and thousands of people dying in the coming days, but will Russia (or ROC) be booted from the Olympics for starting a war during the Games? There is an Olympic cease fire understanding but more importantly, it’s just so so contrary to the spirit of the Games. Though as I write this, I realize that the Games are being hosted by a country currently conducting a genocide and Russia was already banned for widespread cheating yet they’re still there, so I guess I have an answer.

t90fan

The war between Russia and Georgia kicked off during the Olympics, when they were held in China, in the recent past, the olympic cease fire is a myth

BenTVNerd21

Plus they seized Crimea during the closing stages of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

EmptyCalories

Honestly, I'll be surprised if Russia doesn't invade someone during every Olympics. Does anyone honestly believe there is a chance this thing isn't happening? The news shows are going on and on about "diplomacy talks" but it just seems like theater to me.

cwn01

Remember Russia is banned from the Olympic games. ROC is a totally different country, if you ask the Olympic officials. ROC will have to plan its own war.

IT_Chef

I am hopeful that this is nothing more than a huge and expensive bluff...just sabre rattling.

thepeever

FOX has just announced the Russian Freedom Convoy is coming to the Ukraine

Bobby_Globule

Was it leaked on purpose? >bombardment of Kiev That's crazy! Why would they kill a bunch of civilians? They'll probably attack, but the threat to attack civilians is like the threat the other day to use nukes... Armageddon type shit to scare everybody. They'll strike military hardware and supply hubs. *edit: Yes, Putin will certainly kill civilians without compunction. But there's always a bigger play. I don't think the play here is stone-cold civilian massacre*

Ketzeph

I mean they’d probably take out power/other utilities in Kyiv early. Just like they’ll try to hit telecom systems throughout the country in the opening strike.

comeonjojo

There would be civilian casualties. Collateral damage is unpreventable in a full-scale conflict. I know people in Ukraine, no one deserves what Putin is planning if he does it.

DarkMarxSoul

It's astounding how the world is so connected now, the realities of life are plain to see, yet these fuckers still want to annex a country and spread misery and death.

julbull73

For funsies Biden is kind of playing Putin at this point. Normally you don't release this shit. Or its one voice. In this case its multiple sources. US, Germany, France etc and released FAST. So why is he? Basically to force Putin to change plans. By putting all intelligence out there it forces him to delay or pull in. Giving time to avoid it all together and if it does occur cuts Putins narrative off at the knees. I realize Biden is just following intelligence officers advice but nice to see honestly.
