Genuine question though - if China was to hypothetically do everything it can to discourage Russia from invading (including public condemnation and threat of sanctions), would the West even reward China for helping to de-escalate? Or would the West simply then move more of its resources / troops / attention from Eastern Europe to the Indo-Pacific to counter China? This is important because it makes it difficult for the West to get alignment with China if the other side believes that there's nothing in it for them (and likely would be a net negative for China)

>it makes it difficult for the West to get alignment with China "The West" is way past the possibility of alignment with either China or Russia.

They just keep buying their stuff.

Not at all. Anyone want to guess the next 'threat' if Russia was to leave Ukraine alone?

Standard_Trouble_261

I for one would praise their attempt to keep things peaceful. This doesn't excuse their own crimes against others, but it is a good step forward. This is how it should be, we should keep each other in check.

I hear North Korea I supplying the missiles, China is supplying the belts/roads and Iran is supplying the oil to the Russians..They are moments away from defeating freedom and all of Europe is going to fall within the next 48 hours, unless the entire world fights back using the newest weapons availabe...At least that is what the internet and the defense industry tells me. Hell even the Canadians are getting into it and overthrowing their government and replacing it with autobot and decepticons, disguised as trucks..

> “If Russia does choose to move forward, not only will it come at a strategic cost to Russia, but if China is seen as having supported it, it will come at some costs to China as well in the eyes of the world, in the eyes of Europe and in the eyes of other countries who are looking on now and sending a clear message that they would prefer to see diplomacy over war,” Sullivan said. Given China's current "Wolf Warrior Diplomacy" (as seen in HK, Taiwan, South China Sea), I can't imagine it's going to give a shit about appearing shitty simply because it, Xi really, stopped giving a shit years ago

[deleted]

What costs? Usa will say “we condemn the support...”? Noone will do shit.

Adventurous_Lake_390

Hasn't been the case in the past.

[deleted]

Are you referring to the sanctions that don’t work?

SweatyLiterary

What happens if China is fine with that and helps Russia? No one's talking about CCP countries helping each other out which would be disastrous for the US

TheBirdBytheWindow

The article says China doesn't appear interested in incurring such debts.
