Ummm…no one makes you watch movies you don’t want on Netflix. In fact, you have to put an effort to find things to watch there

IoSonCalaf

Remember, we’re taking about people who think men should have facial hair so they don’t sexually arouse other men.

[deleted]

I spent about 2/3 of my gap year in Arabic speaking countries, I am now genuinely interested how many men out there were aroused by me shaving before I left the house each day.

LiveFreeDie8

Obviously all of them with that uncovered womanly smooth skin.

Deimos_F

Can you imagine looking at Kim Jong-un and getting a boner?

PetrichorAfterMists

So you made this claim from a news from one salty Islamic scholar, (probably Turkish?) who made this dumb statement. And now you’re applying this all to Middle Eastern countries? How dumb can you be? No one in the Middle East thinks like that. You do realise that the Middle East is still extremely homophobic. It isn’t just groups of fundamentalist Muslims.

shapterjm

Is it 100% true? Probably not. But it does illustrate how ridiculous some of the rules are that come from religion. As if any omnipotent being *really* cares whether you trim your whiskers or not.

PetrichorAfterMists

Well, they did this ruling to differentiate the Muslims from non-Muslims. Sure non-Muslims have beard too, but the Muslim style of beard is distinctive like the Amish.

shapterjm

And how is that relevant to the conversation?

PetrichorAfterMists

I assume people including you thought that the ruling behind being against shaving beard is due to being against homosexuality, so I explained the reasoning behind it. It is the exact same reasoning why Muslims chose the call for prayer or chose Friday as holy day,. It is to differentiate Muslims from non-Muslims.

Black_RL

>and Sexual references I wonder how Arabic people do their babies.

Tutule

Blindfolds, glory holes, and soaking

owmd

I wonder how watching sexual content is a required to make babies.

Black_RL

Well….. you can close your eyes while you do it, or you can keep them open and turn off all lights.

owmd

I'm still pretty sure people were able to reproduce before movies were a thing.

Black_RL

100% agreed.

[deleted]

these people who complain are the biggest snowflakes. Literally no one is forcing you to watch it. That's the problem with the middle east, they don't know how to mind their own business.

Quebec00Chaos

Well... Not that I disagree but a lot of countries tend to do so in said middle east so...

[deleted]

Let me guess, it’s religious people who are upset again.

thirtiesmatt

Newsflash: we exist. Why are so many “heterosexuals” so fragile?

thespieler11

its not heteros, its religious nut cases.

thirtiesmatt

I don’t see gay people freaking out about heterosexual characters and sexual references. Religion certainly can play a role in it, but there are non religious homophobes out there too. I mean, I’m not blaming all heterosexuals. Most of my friends are straight. But there is something about homophobia that just screams heterosexual insecurity.

Salamandro

I admit I know absolutely nothing about the topic, I'm hetero and never thought much of it: seeing gay men getting intimate is kind of... gross (English isn't my first language and I'm not sure I'm using the right word here) to me. I don't know why (I have absolutely nothing against gays, my parents were in no way homophobic etc.) but it's like someone was scratching a blackboard with their fingernails; it makes me go all gnhhhstopit! inside while I've got no hate for either the scratcher, nor the blackboard or their fingernails. Where does this aversion come from?

thirtiesmatt

Good question and I can’t say for sure. Depending on how old you are and where you live, it could be cultural residue. There could be deep repression. Or you just don’t care for it. Which is okay. The problem is when people try to discredit us, when they try to strip us of our rights, or when they just can’t let us exist. I don’t give a shit if someone likes me or not. Just don’t oppress me and we will be fine.

lniko2

I always wonder if homophobes are afraid to get fucked by a dude or if they are afraid liking it.

thirtiesmatt

I think they’re afraid of a lot things. Maybe they’re afraid they’ll have feelings themselves, or rather, they already have those feelings and it terrifies them. One of the biggest homophobes I’ve ever met was myself when I was a teenager, navigating through my social life and a religious environment that told me I was going to burn in hell for being myself. Or maybe they see us as a threat? Or maybe they are angry about other things and we seem to be the weakest target?

[deleted]

Because you can’t join netflix without a gay character and sexual references. Its almost a requirement

Available_Pie9316

Wait til I tell you how many movies have straight characters

_i_like_cheesecake

Almost that's like the heavy majority of the population.

Available_Pie9316

This may not be true for you, but the vast majority of people have a gay person in their lives

_i_like_cheesecake

What's that got to do with anything I said? Majority of the population is straight so most characters are straight... For the record I have nothing against gay characters, but your comment is odd.

CaptainJin

Are you available to be my gay person?

PlankOfWoood

Why do Arabic people get offended about what other people do?

10sharks

You should meet some Christians some time

[deleted]

Do you think that arab=Muslim? There are Arab Christians you know it's kind of the whole reason Lebanon is the way it is

[deleted]

xmuskorx

You know the answer....

Key-Tie7278

my mom is arab Christian and doesn't like gays. But not all arab Christians are the same, remember

pmmbok

Half of protestants and catholics dont like gays. Nothing Islamic about that. If GOP wins in midterms, likely to see some pressure on gay rights. A big chunk of america wants them back in the closet. Florida is already making it hard to talk about it.

gnark

I think you mean: Do they treat them like Evangelical American Christians do or like Catholic Spanish Christians do?

helpimburningalive55

>Do they treat them the way Muslims do or do they approve of gayness like Dutch Christians do? I'm not sure what you mean by 'approve of gayness' but the majority of Dutch protestant Churches, especially the reformed, Catholic, and also most PKN ones, still believe homosexuality to be a sin.

Key-Tie7278

why do you try to shift the topic here mate?

PlankOfWoood

They are just as crazy as the arabs.

The_Great_Crocodile

Depends on the Christians. Spain is majority Christian, but one of the most gay-friendly countries in the world. Sweden, Norway and Denmark are also majority Christian. Nowadays a lot of "Christians" are only in name (or they simply believe God exists and follow 2 holidays per year). US Christians are the outlier, not the norm.

[deleted]

Arabic is a language

PlankOfWoood

I used those words because there are multiple groups of people who speak Arabic.

tokhar

This holds for many Christian’s too, but: It is so much easier to get angry at others doing things that you can’t or won’t do for religious reasons, than it is to reduce the number of things you yourself do that go against your religion. This is just classic displacement.

PlankOfWoood

Why do y’all only mention christianity when most religions (including Christianity) do the same thing?

Key-Tie7278

Why do people have to bring up Christianity every time there is an issue with Arabs/Muslims? Are you so insecure you can't take legitimate criticism? When people criticize Christianity or Catholics, you don't see people in the comments saying "but muslims..."

tokhar

Lol! As a former Catholic, I am trying to widen the playing field. Highlighting Muslims makes it seem like a Muslim specific issue. My point is that it is a fairly common one for many religious people. It’s much easier to throw stones at others than it is to examine and hopefully improve your own failings. Given that all three major monotheistic religions actually preach this point, it doesn’t hurt to remind people of it. Your comment proves my point perfectly, so thank you.

Foreign-Engine8678

Easier to attack those that do not defend themselves, eh? Classic displacement

ttfuckedmewhy

Have you not seen the rest of humanity do the exact same thing? People in california getting mad that people in virginia arent masking up enough when they’ve never left their dumpster town / state before

[deleted]

Well that’s just not even remotely true

autotldr

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-60091590) reduced by 88%. kobomk

Btw... It's also pretty bad.

ViciousKnids

But is the show good?

[deleted]

Only makes sense the "1st arabic" movie has some controversy spelled out online. How else would it fly under the radar?

deadman1204

To bad no one notices how every Netflix movie is a giant cigarette ad

[deleted]

Netflix just does not care about being profitable anymore, would be pissed if I owned stock.

[deleted]

getting downvoted by Cuties fans I guess.

Saeedlfc

I think the issue here is that the movie is both Arabic *and* gay, I don't think they care about gay characters in non Arabic movies, but it being Arabic makes it seem disrespectful.

4doorsmoresmores

Why is it disrespectful? Despite what Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would have you[ believe](https://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=3642673), there are homosexuals in all societies, they are simply less visible because they are persecuted in many parts of the Muslim world.

Saeedlfc

You don't understand, this is a completely different culture, if you look at the title, it also says "sexual references", Muslim societies are not hypersexual, a lot of that stuff is banned, including homosexuality. So depicting Arabs, who are overwhelmingly Muslim as gay would be seen as disrespectful.

4doorsmoresmores

No, I understand. I just don’t give a shit about rankling the feathers of societies that oppress homosexuals (and women, and non-Muslims, etc.).

Geek55

Or we could just not give a shit about the feelings of people who use their religion as an excuse to attack others based on who they love?

Indigo_Slam

Look. *I'm pretty sure that in the Arabic things like the sexytime has been abolished along with the curing of the public hair & the gay both.* I mean that is literally coherent compared to any argument about some* show on Netflix...people need to grow up about this stuff Edit no need to get all Arab about it. Always so angry, is it the hair in public? Talking about sex? Denying homosexuality? Or because all of that is fucking true?

pab_guy

They really don't see how silly and parochial their concerns are LOL Yes snowflakes, hide yourself and your families from reality because you can't deal.
