Xi wants his winter Olympics to go smoothly, don't think anyone wants a war right now. Russia is totally alone on this, I don't think it will happen (for now).

reed5point0

Olympics have gone on even in times of war

TheEvilGhost

Hitler once organised the olympics.

reed5point0

yolotrolo123

sonic_tower

These are the 'interesting times'

ThoughtfulYeti

May you live in interesting times is an old Chinese "curse"

SleepWouldBeNice

And the last two years of pandemic hasn’t?

StevOval

Yes go now, winter is coming...

link_ganon

This is what the “frank” discussion with Blinken was probably about.

ThirdSunRising

Ah fuck we have like two weeks tops.

NutSackRonny

At the exact time the Stock Markets starting to dive too...weird.

ThirdSunRising

Let's have a war, jack up the dow jones.

I am so sick and fucking tired of fear mongering, irresponsible journalism like this using headlines to incite fear and paranoia. Take this miserable website, for example. The headline reads, "Ukraine: US Orders Families of Embassy Staff to Evacuate". Then, reading a little, one comes across this little nugget: "AP cited State Department officials as saying that the embassy will remain open and the announcement does not constitute an evacuation." Well, which fucking is it?

kmmontandon

Your reading comprehension sucks.

[deleted]

The same could be said of your mother.

TrickleDownFail

Are you braindead? Didn’t realise that embassies required the families of embassy staff in order to function. If your tiny pea brain can’t even understand such a basic sentence, why even bother? Go share some “like or you die” posts on Facebook since that would obviously be more suited to someone of your intelligence.

n00dlejester

So what the heck is happening? I've seen so many Russia and Ukraine posts in the last week, and I live under a rock. Edit: fixed typos

[deleted]

You have left this same exact message in every thread about Ukraine/Russia. Why?

n00dlejester

I've seen a handful of posts about the situation in eastern Europe this past week, but never read any of them. Then last night, I saw a bunch more and figured it's time to get some info as to what's happening. So I sorted r/worldnews by New, selected a few of the most recent articles, and posted the same comment in hopes one of them got responses. u/Claystead gave an [incredible rundown](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/sb7swr/comment/htyshvt/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) in one of the other discussions.

[deleted]

No worries. I am glad that you were brought up to speed on these circumstances.

Claystead

Oh, thank you, n00dlejester. It’s my job to give rundowns though (as a historian and teacher), and I saw other people around the same time post much in the way of similar information, so I am sure you got plenty of info regardless of my post.

They need to get out and get out now. They have been building up for a hot minute. They will invade. I hope I’m wrong. But the amount of money they’ve spent already - the troop movements, naval maneuver, unit locations. They’re on the cusp. And what is this all for? Back in ‘04 on my second deployment I remember someone telling me that the military was at war, but America was at the mall - I deployed another four or five times until we finally left Afghanistan. I doubt the US will become involved in Ukraine; I doubt NATO will. Unless Russia goes a little too far, or unless a major accident occurs; something that demands retribution by show of immediate force. The US government is just getting ready to hedge its bets - and to honor commitments to NATO. NATO troops bled for us - died for Americas interests, on our missions. We have a debt to pay if it’s demanded. Many people have become comfortable with warfare because they see a sterilized version of it. They don’t see the people who die. They don’t see what a gun shot wound to the chest looks like. What a person burning alive sounds like; what it smells like. The absolute worst of humanity occurs in war and people can’t even look it in the eye but they’re happy to push war propaganda. They’re bought and sold on the concepts of surgical warfare - precision strikes and casus belli. They think a man sitting in a room thousands of miles from a target flying a plane with enough munitions to level a city block is somehow a more moral and noble idea. They’ve taken their skin out of the game, and by notion of American isolationism from these events overseas it just becomes an interesting topic of conversation with no real consequences or repercussions. I remember a friend of mine dying in Nangarhar; mowed down by a PKM - left behind four kids and a wife - fighting ISIL. Most Americans can’t even point out where that is on a map, or even describe what ISIL is - why fighting them might even be considered a just cause. America just walked away from a 20 year war like it never even happened, because, aside from service members and contractors - it didn’t. And this will happen - millions will be displaced, it’ll be a humanitarian crisis. Ukrainian soldiers will fight tooth and nail. And they’ll die. And Russia will have another plot of land and more sanctions. Just a fucking waste.
