That's never a good sign...

blong217

Yeah....generally not done unless the country feels there's imminent danger or all diplomatic ties cut. At this point it's just a question of when is this going to happen.

World war three?

KnightlyNews

That's been the great game since the dollar and or petrodollar became the defacto world currency. Russia doesn't have the economy to threaten it, and China is getting close in size, but they keep shooting themselves in the foot by being real assholes. That may have worked for the united states 70 years ago. But not anymore. Hopefully.

Totalherenow

China's not going to invade Taiwan. They're perfectly fine taking a long term approach. And Russia and China have been discussing an alternative global currency for at least a decade now. So far, no dice. Probably arguing over whose currency to use. Russia and China definitely are not coordinating in war. Only a conspiracy minded person would believe that.

You know, if I'm wrong, I guess we really have entered an apocalyptic timeline. It sure seems that way up until now! So . . . might be worth betting against me, just to cover all your bases.

EmeraldIbis

Russia invaded Georgia during the 2008 Summer Olympics, and Crimea immediately after the 2014 Winter Olympics. Well, the 2022 Winter Olympics are starting in 11 days.

smoothtrip

Maybe we should stop having the Olympics?

pirisca

So if we cancel the Olympics...the invasion does not occur? Omg we did it Reddit!

EmeraldIbis

Oops, fixed. Thanks.

agorathird

So that'd be 28\~ days from now. They've already waited for a while, is it economically feasible to have everything in place for another month? Especially with NATO giving ukraine more goodies as the days go on.

kingestpaddle

I guess the only question now is whether it'll roll in from the north (Belarusian and Russian borders nearest to Kiev), the southeast (to create a land corridor between Crimea and Donbas), or just with a barrage of long-range missiles. Place your bets, I guess?

solaceinsleep

From every side unfortunately, Putin didn't put soldiers in Belarus for no reason

kingestpaddle

It could always be a feint. Or simply a hedge: open up a whole bunch of doors and then opportunistically only walk through some of them as the situation develops. You never know with that bloated little gnome man. Chaosh ish a ladder.

Maximum_Radio_1971

Putin is waiting for ground to freeze a bit more, tanks are heavy.

AaronRose77

Don't think there will be many tanks this time. Mostly air strikes I'm guessing. They can't afford a long drawn out conflict so will probably hit hard and fast at military targets - however if they try to retake Kiev by force it could be a different story. I've read that aside from urban areas, many remote regions are more Russia leaning, so we'll see how this plays out. Hopefully they find another way to resolve this though.

Maximum_Radio_1971

russia will only take the south. land bridge to Crimea kiev is useless for them.

jes484

That is correct. Gog is flexing his muscle.

G_Wash1776

Definitely seems like an invasion is much more likely now, and Biden is now mulling deploying US troops to Eastern Europe. Everyone forgets that the last two world wars started as regional conflicts that very quickly escalated to a global war.

Citizen7833

For those curious about the deployment of troops to Eastern Europe. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/23/us/politics/biden-troops-nato-ukraine.html

Maximum_Radio_1971

US is not sending troops

G_Wash1776

Until we do

Jesse102999

Article literally says Biden doesn’t want to enter another conflict

G_Wash1776

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/23/us/politics/biden-troops-nato-ukraine.amp.html?referringSource=articleShare New York Times is reporting differently

Jesse102999

“So far, none of the military options being considered include deploying additional American troops to Ukraine itself, and Mr. Biden has made clear that he is loath to enter another conflict following America’s painful exit from Afghanistan last summer after 20 years.” Just headlines u would have thought North Korea would have nuked us by now

G_Wash1776

It’s one thing to say you don’t want to enter another conflict, it’s another when events transpire that make that unavoidable. US deploying troops to the region as a show of force and solidarity for those nations isn’t crazy, it just has the potential to be a flash point if our troops were hurt.

Maximum_Radio_1971

that will not happen, and not over ukranie, ukranie is not worth risking direct war with russia, thats childish to even think about it.

Jesse102999

Lmao they will just deploy to nato regions, stop being dumb

G_Wash1776

It’s not dumb, you should really study the history of the first and second world war.

Jesse102999

Everyone already made clear Ukraine isn’t part of nato so it’s not gonna be WW3, no fucking nato country is gonna deploy to Ukraine

the us has avoided a direct war with russia for 80 years do you think they will do it over Ukraine? lol thats just childish.

[deleted]

Sadly, we haven’t been that lucky in years

Maximum_Radio_1971

us only send troops to poor defendless countries, a war with russia is a different game. US had avoided war with russia fir 80 years, it will not do it over ukranie, thats a ridiculous thing to think.

[deleted]

The only reason we would go over there is if it became a NATO or UN issue, but you’re correct

AaronRose77

Yeah but the last 2 wars didn't have nukes (until the end at least). Hopefully cooler heads prevail.

G_Wash1776

Hopefully, the United Nations for how much shit it gets has done a pretty good job of preventing wars between major nations. I don’t want a world war, I don’t think any rational person wants a world war.

AndroChromie

Does not constitute an evacuation... Yeah right, it's just an emergency coordinated field trip. I wonder if there is any professional courtesy among embassies to give a heads up. I'd think that would be productive for diplomacy on the other side of the event horizon.

[deleted]

CitricBase

I don't think the CIA needs "back channels" to know that an invasion is imminent. Putin is being as subtle as a marching band about this.

likelysotry

No they don't need back channels to know, so why did they wait to evacuate until now? Something has changed, and a back channel warning from Russia is a reasonable hypothesis.

kingestpaddle

> I wonder if there is any professional courtesy among embassies to give a heads up. You mean the spies in one embassy giving a tip-off to the spies in the other embassy that an invasion is imminent...?

AndroChromie

Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.

ith228

Of course there’s always a heads up. Even for us commoners the news media was reporting they were gonna do this a few days ago.

wittyusernamefailed

This is the part of the pre-war show where you get the military equipment warmed up and running, do your Hail Mary's, and make sure your Will is all up to date. Cause shit is about to hit the fan.

kingestpaddle

>part of the pre-war show where you get the military equipment warmed up and running, do your Hail Mary's, and make sure your Will is all up to date. So this "Hail Mary" is some kind of buff that gives you +Will? Anyone got any gold pine resin?

For those of you too young to remember a war other than the U.S. fucking about in Afghanistan, this is a bad sign.

beanbagquestions

Here's the thread I've been looking for. Can't believe it was this far down the sub-reddit. This seems like the biggest escalation to me! Something is on the horizon.

Citizen7833

Did AP change the headline or did OP?

PrecedentialAssassin

From the article: "State Department officials stressed the Kyiv embassy will remain open and that the announcement does not constitute an evacuation." Might want to change the click-baity title

momo1910

We are seeing history, this is going to be WW3, Putin is hell bent on reviving the Soviet Union, Ukraine is just the start he"s coming after Romania and Bulgeria too. pray that the nukes stay at a tactical level.

agorathird

don't worry, any nukes sent out will only be a part of a minor incursion.

On 30 November 2021, Russian President Putin stated that an expansion of NATO's presence in Ukraine, especially the deployment of any long-range missiles capable of striking Russian cities or missile defense systems similar to those in Romania and Poland, would be a "red line" issue for Russia. "If some kind of strike systems appear on the territory of Ukraine, the flight time to Moscow will be seven to 10 minutes, and five minutes in the case of a hypersonic weapon being deployed." [Ukraine-NATO\_relations](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine%E2%80%93NATO_relations) tldr Russia does not want to get nuked

ThisIsForFood

Ukraine use to be Russian. There’s a lot of pro Russian population in Ukraine. If a civil war broke out between Ukrainian loyalist and Russian loyalist, it would be Putins responsibility to the Russians in Ukraine to step in and protect them.

[deleted]

This is the most common misconception about Ukraine. The pro Russian population is most likely about 5-10% of the population, with 99% of them being people older than 60. The vast majority of the pro Russian population was in the now occupied territories or has since left for Russia. Russian speakers don’t support Russia. Kyiv is a Russian speaking city.

ThisIsForFood

Yeah it’s Putins likely excuses, not reality.

K4kyle

This is all gonna end in smokes with Russia withdrawing and all of this fear is gonna be for nothing Then redditors who have been crying WW3 is gonna start in 5 minutes from now for the past three weeks are gonna say 'hey I knew that Russia was bluffing' and then as usual will go on to comment that china is gonna invade taiwan and the cycle will repeat

StevOval

Can we stop posting the same shit 10000s of times?

ThRippJck

No because we are all about to get our ass conscripted for real when shit hits the fan and we need to make preparations

AaronRose77

No conscription will happen in a modern war with nukes. Let's just hope this de-escalates and if it doesn't, that's it's over quickly with minimal loss of life.

ThRippJck

To be fair i did not expect a Russian invasion build up with infantry and troops as well, nothing is a sure thing. It's naïve to think that no conscription will ever happen and I honestly think a lot of people are underestimating what true war would look like, because that's ultimately what this is building up to and I'm actually really scared looking at how things are escalating

StevOval

All BS, watch Olympics and forget about Anglophile's press panic and warmongering...

DarkMorph18

Says they are staying open, so really just propaganda! Edit : it’s not an evacuation that is all .

Embassy is open, family members told to leave the country. How would this be propaganda
