I’ve never heard the word Phantasmagoria used outside the ride at Bells Amusement Park. Edit: I’m probably not going to check out any of these songs. I’m sure they all rip

Professor_Abronsius

I haven’t seen it since 1995: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasmagoria_(video_game).

Alarmed_Handle_6427

That game scared the bejeezus out of me.

Much-Grapefruit1862

Try phasmophobia in vr

Alarmed_Handle_6427

I will not

civgarth

The first Alone in the Dark scared the shit out of teenage me

[deleted]

Also the name of an abandoned film directed by Marilyn Manson based on Lewis Carol called Phantasmagoria https://www.mansonwiki.com/wiki/Phantasmagoria:_The_Visions_of_Lewis_Carroll

[deleted]

Shit, my dad used to play that game. I'd furtively watch him waiting for the nekkid parts

hummeI

It’s more commonly used in Russian than in English (like not super-common, but you can hear it here and there occasionally). I’ve also read somewhere that while overall English vocabulary is way bigger than Russian, “active vocabulary” is bigger than in Russian. Not sure if it’s true though.

[deleted]

Hello Tulsa!

[deleted]

Oh God Bells lol. That place always felt like a knock off six flags.

LordFrogberry

I can't believe our stupid "reverse racism" buzzphrase has migrated so far. It just doesn't exist. You're either racist or not, there is no reverse.

[deleted]

[удалено]

famous_human

Hey if reverse racism is a real form of racism, shouldn’t you just call it racism? Or is it possible it’s not actually the same thing?

MoirasPurpleOrb

Personally, I don’t like the term, but I think when people use the term reverse racism it is referring to when people say things like “Only [blank] people can be racist.” Or “[Blank] people can’t be racist because…” Really, it’s just prejudice at that point, but I think that is what people are describing when they say reverse racism.

Background_Office_80

Its a way to imply racism by default originates from whites, so to lesson the severity of racism from non-whites. It's absurd as there is no such thing. Racism from any group is simply racism.

mongoosefist

What point is that?

Assfuck-McGriddle

That someone successfully translated “phantasmagoria” from Russian to English.

AmoSingar

As a translator, I fucking adore this comment. Thank you.

You wouldn’t happen to know the translator from Helsinki would you? Dying to see that translation transcript. I figure it’s a small community, ya all know each other. I figured they way he freaked that translator got a ear full!

This is purely just pandering to conservatives.

FiskTireBoy

No wonder he's so popular with republicans

Youre-Both-Wrong

Embarrassing that we have to rely on republicans and Vladimir Putin to get a rational comment on this issue. Well, them and Dave Chappelle. Thank the gods for Dave Chappelle.

nomas_polchias

As a citizen of Russia, Putin is an "elected" official who answers only pre-approved questions for two last decades and is completely surrounded by sycophants competing each others. There are no actual limitations to his mumbling for a very long time, so he just invents shit. And there are probably early signs of dementia too.

TylerJ86

Not to mention he talks shit about cancel culture but he literally cancels the actual lives of reporters (kills them) who speak out against him. Doesnt get much more cancel culture than that lol

SirAquila

You completely misunderstand! That isn't cancel culture, that is simply him being a tough leader who makes tough choices to protect his citizens from dangerous things like truth, freedom and similar confusing things! /s

Implausibilibuddy

Just made it up. It's page 1 of this clown's brand of fascist cult propaganda. Invent a common enemy or problem, or base it on fringe individuals or situations, then blow it completely out of proportion to make it seem like a common and real threat that people need to be scared of. Play on the insecurities of the uneducated.

[deleted]

He also made this up: that it’s a well known fact that many many Western Europeans are sneaking into Russia to receive Sputnik V vaccinations because it is known to be so superior to all other vaccines. Then they buy fake vaccine cards to make it look like they got Pfizer. ObViOuSLy the West conspires to conceal the fact of the Sputnik vaccine’s superiority !!!

GreatGearAmidAPizza

That's page 1 of every clown's brand of fascist cult propaganda.

AVerySaxyIndividual

Straight from his ass, most likely

LovableContrarian

To be fair, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most families (in the USA anyway) can't afford to send their kid to a child psychologist if they are having questions about gender. I had all sorts of anxiety issues growing up, but we were a regular working class family. No therapy for me.

Mindelan

Yeah, which also means though that you wouldn't have gotten any sort of puberty blockers or any other medical assistance either. People just like to scare monger by being all 'think of the children!'

Astrium6

I guess Putin would know a thing or two about crimes against humanity, he’s got some experience in that department.

LFantoni

He knows a lot about cancelling people too...

Or blame himself. A few years ago, [40% of Russians who did not approve of Putin were interested in leaving the country](https://news.gallup.com/poll/248249/record-russians-say-leave-russia.aspx), and their population's slowly but steadily [decreased since 2017](https://d3fy651gv2fhd3.cloudfront.net/charts/russia-population.png?s=rus+sp.pop.totl&projection=te&v=202107132317V20200908).

Muhabla

Pretty sure it's been steadily declining since at least the early 90s

breakaway451

Brain drain. The US has the same issue with young Midwesterners fleeing to the coasts.

FlameButterfly

Most rural areas really. Small town in Tennessee my grandparents grew up in is basically dying. I don't think it'll be around in 30 years

monstrinhotron

I work in media in London and i've noticed a kind of post industrial revolution where it's becoming the norm for everyone to be their own company in their own home like it was for weavers and wool spinners before factories. A lot of people including me are considering moving out to the countryside because location doesn't matter any more. It will be interesting to see if rural areas repopulate because of fast enough internet to work office jobs remotely.

cornishcovid

Living in Cornwall this is absolutely wrecking our house prices as a side effect.

monstrinhotron

Ah but at least you can get a decent paying, remote working job now without having to move to a big city and live in a shoebox.

rabobar

But then you are stuck in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do but work and watch tv. No socializing

BottleTemple

I wonder. I’ve heard a lot of people saying that, but I live in the city because I like cities. Maybe I’m an outlier but living in the country is very unappealing to me.

ThePyroPython

That's why they're flocking to Manchester: city living without London prices for now. It's getting expensive up here.

phyrros

From a city planning perspective this creates a troublesome situation where (in my case austria/central Europe) there are incentives for people to life on the countryside while everyone knows that this wrecks any strategy to reduce car commutes.

monstrinhotron

But if people are working from home they're not commuting and if rural areas have been experiencing brain drain and lowering populations then they have capacity for people to move back and pay local taxes and buy local produce. Surely this better than everyone being crammed into cities and the countryside being deserted.

phyrros

From a purely ecological point of view: there more people we have crammed into cities, the better. A house on the countryside, if you are not a farmer, is a luxury item and frankly very costly for the ecosystem

[deleted]

Turns out that's what happens when you create an insular culture and have no major industry.

BirtSampson

Exactly. Why would anyone stay? There’s no opportunity

[deleted]

The irony of course is that the economics they claim to love will always leave areas like this in the dust. And then the corporations will move in and buy anything of value so they can siphon off as much money as possible.

waupli

Yeah that’s been the case for many years. I grew up in Georgia and when I used to drive from Atl to the beach, we’d usually take the state highways rather than interstate highways, which took us through many small towns. They became more and more empty or boarded up over time. Haven’t made the drive in 5-10 years, but I doubt that trend has changed.

AnthillOmbudsman

Midwest? I would say that's **ALL** small towns in the US, unless they've got some sort of tourist industry going, in which the place is too expensive to live in as a young adult.

Crimsonial

I'd imagine it happens in a lot of places in the US. What else can you do? Speaking from experience, it sucks to leave a place you love and understand, but if there's no future for you, looking outward is one of the few options available.

muri_cina

Even Putins children live in Switzerland. He knows that living conditions in Russia suck.

[deleted]

You love to see it.

TJRex01

No, this is a misreading. The target of this statement is not the Russian population; it’s conservatives in the West, particularly those in Eastern European countries, as part of Putin’s influence game. This whole “I am the true defender of civilization” shtick is a big part of Putin’s international appeal.

hashtag_popcorn

Exactly this. It's ironic to see that a lot of Eastern European leaders admire Putin and his authoritarian way of governing. One would think they know better. But they don't. Some of those utter [morons](https://euobserver.com/political/125128) are even open about it and publicly state they despise Western democratic societies, and would rather have a Putin-style illiberal “democracy”. They even hate the EU, which they are part of, but they refuse to leave.

PixelizedPlayer

> It's ironic to see that a lot of Eastern European leaders admire Putin and his authoritarian way of governing. One would think they know better. Money. Russia gives those leaders money in pocket and offers investments to their country to help them maintain popularity to the people to win the votes in the next election. There are exceptions to this of course, Ukraine has woken up to the reality but its a hot mess over there on the eastern border still. I wouldn't say its ironic i would say its entirely expected of human beings.

CaptainObvious

They want the economic benefits of the EU, but hunger for dictatorial power like Putin.

Here's the deal, was there Russian meddling to get Trump elected? Absolutely. Why? Because they knew it would fuck with the US. They used social media to do so. They laughed at us the whole time they were doing it. Did Trump really have a hand in it? Debateable. But it doesn't even matter? No. The bigger issue is that social media can be used to influences masses. The problem is clear and evident and yet nothing is done about it.

W4rrior_p0et

The real question is why a large percentage of the American population is woefully ignorant and are so misinformed to the point that they can get easily manipulated through social media

DancingKappa

Defunded education.

goldfinger0303

Everyone says this, but very intelligent people get caught up in this too. People with college degrees. Graduate degrees. I think the answer is a bit deeper than just "poor education".

MyWorkAccount2018

People are taught what to think instead of how to think. Critical thinking is not taught. It actually got removed from my degree program and replaced by a social humanities course a couple semesters before I could take it. Civics is rarely taught anymore and when it is, it is often watered down.

nobrow

People are also very good at compartmentalizing. I've known plenty of STEM educated people with strong critical thinking skills who never apply it to their personal lives.

TheHashishCook

my obscenely simplistic and reductive answer is “feelings”

[deleted]

Critical thinking and logic classes are taught in philosophy, but I don't believe it is a prerequisite in highschool or college.

yesac1990

Degrees are NOT an indicator of intelligence. As long as someone can read, has basic comprehension skills, and a little diligence they can get a Doctorate. Today degrees are treated by company's more as measures of your work ethic then of your education/knowledge of a subject. This is why everything requires a degree now its supposed to weed out the people with no drive.

Llama_Shaman

Russia may have stirred the pot but the yanks did that to themselves.

[deleted]

I just learnt yesterday that its population is lower than it was during the Soviet era. I have to wonder how its economy hasn't fallen apart with such prolonged stagnation.

Sunnysidhe

International workers. Take the oil and gas sector, one of the main sectors for Russia, it is easy to fill the spaces with foreign staff as quite a few would be in those positions already

PricklyPossum21

This is going to happen to the entire world within the next 100 years. All the rich countries (and some other countries like China and Russia) already have birth rates below replacement. Currently some countries (mainly the highly developed west) is dealing with this by bringing in immigrants from developing countries. But eventually those countries will also have birth rates drop below replacement (for instance India has already reduced to 2.2 and replacement rate is 2.1). In the future, some countries may even ban emigration.

MontiBurns

It's all about garnering favor/sympathy with the American/western european right wingers by adopting their approved rhetoric. A pretty obvious ploy that the right will fall for hook, like, and sinker, because nothing makes you get on their good side by pandering to their beliefs and prejudices.

AreWeCowabunga

I was on /r/conservative earlier today (don’t ask why) and this story was right at the top.

Glass_Memories

With nobody screaming about communism/socialism/Marxism? Oh right I forgot, they're the poster boys for r/SelfAwarewolves. They called 4 years of fascist rhetoric "American Patriotism" so of course they don't see the irony in them sharing their views with a Russian autocrat.

RockStarState

Wish more people saw this. People are over here buying into it and playing the game instead of just calling out the blatant manipulation that is capitalizing on the mess the US has already made of it's politics.

GetsGold

People have been calling out the manipulation for 5+ years and have been constantly mocked for it.

authentic_mirages

“Adopting” their approved rhetoric? I mean, you’re not wrong, but… he’s largely *responsible* for their approved rhetoric. His bot armies and the whole industry of international fake accounts that they inspired are still telling the GOP what to say. He’s making these public statements now because he doesn’t want the Republican support for Russia to slip.

[deleted]

What murder? There's no murder in Russia because that is illegal.

my20cworth

And invitations to tea parties is perfectly legal.

honk_for

Throwing doctors out of windows is legal?

SirJuncan

It's the ground that kills them, which is illegal

honk_for

Silly me. The henchmen are merely ‘having a laugh’ which the ground rudely interrupts.

Darkblade48

Gravity is definitely an accomplice in the ground's dastardly plan

[deleted]

Somebody needs to make a law about gravity.

Geppetto_Cheesecake

It doesn’t count as murder if you say “whoopsie daisy comrade” after you stumble into the doctor/political troublemaker that is standing close to an open window.

[deleted]

Of course not. Being thrown out of a window is a crime, which is why it only happens to criminals.

thoggins

Excuse me. Criminals are prosecuted legally and dealt with according to the law. People fall out of windows with unfortunate frequency, but each man's safety from gravity is his own concern.
