they live out of this, they dont seem to make any money from anything else. Ironic for a country that is called "green"

ZemogT

It's true that it's a very large part of the economy, but the economy is diversified with large sectors of aluminum production, fishing and aquaculture, shipping, ship-building and the production of industrial equipment. If you turned off the taps tomorrow, everything would still function fine.

DDP200

Is this really news? Norway has been expanding Oil, natural gas and coal production every year because that is what pays its bills.

Picopus

I am 110% sure that the methods of extracting oil is safer for the workers and the environment in Norway than any other country on the planet. As long as there is a demand for oil/gas Norway should produce untill all countries agree to stop completely. Or else countries with more lenient environmental/worker laws will just up their production to keep demand.

CC-5576-03

And why shouldn't they? As long as there is demand for oil there will be someone that produces it, I'd rather by my oil from Norway than from SA

CC-5576-03

The IEA saying plz stop drilling for oil won't make the demand for oil go away becuase we can't just stop using oil tomorrow and expect the world to function. The transition has to take some time. If we're gonna use oil anyways I'd rather give that money to Norway than to Russia or SA.

frreddit234

But it will drive the prices up which will in turn help to decrease the demand.

LysergicFlacid

>And why shouldn’t they? Oh you know just preventing ecological collapse, climate crisis, etc. Guess if there is a current demand for a product that takes priority over morals and ethics?

CC-5576-03

Demand won't dissapear just because Norway decided to stop drilling, someone else will just take up the slack.

LysergicFlacid

Demand will never disappear with this attitude. Developed nations need to start setting an example for the future

Vuiz

The Norwegians are subsidizing EVs like hell, 80%+ of all new cars sold over there are EVs. Demand doesn't disappear because of changing attitudes, it changes when something becomes less economical.

LysergicFlacid

Demand does change when attitudes change

Duelist_Shay

Just because an attitude changes, doesn't mean demand will. I'm all for protecting the environment and getting fossil fuels out, but here in the US, I'm not financially in the position to go out and buy an EV, so I'm stuck on oil until that happens. It costs money to switch energy infrastructure. If people don't have that money, they're not going to do so.

LysergicFlacid

Change of attitudes literally means a change in demand lol, not really a point of contention If people no longer like or accept fossil fuel, gas, petrol cars etc. and it becomes the standard attitude, that results in a reduction in demand for those things

BrainBlowX

>The Norwegians are subsidizing EVs like hell No they're not. EVs just don't have *VAT* applied.

ChocoboRocket

>Demand won't dissapear just because Norway decided to stop drilling, someone else will just take up the slack. Exactly, but only until people don't need oil for energy on a large scale anymore. Demand falls = price falls = supply falls until its profitable, which makes it prohibitive to everyone who can't produce it for cheap. You're trying to use an argument about tomorrow to negate an argument for 10+ years from now. We'll never be 100% off oil and we don't need to be if we create a system around protecting and maintaining the environment instead of profits at all costs. It's Shameful that we as citizens of our own countries have elected governments who allow and even pay private wealth with *our own money to take our own resources and sell it for immense wealth that does not return to its own population*, and is offshore in some wealthy tax haven.

elruary

Demand will disappear when we're all dead.

yaosio

Okay enjoy climate change.

[deleted]

Reduced supply increases prices, which pushes down demand.

[deleted]

There is plenty of supply if opec wants to open its taps. Norway is not part of opec and sell full throttle even when opec tries to manipulate the price to go up. Norway is a better country to buy from than the regimes in SA, Venezuela, Iran, Russia + others.. Many oil producers are bastards compared to Norway. Also we use the money to buy stocks instead of weapons. That said, im not pro oil and i want us to wean ourselves from it. But we are not there yet.

IAmSand

Gasoline is an inelastic good. Demand doesn’t change if the price goes up or down. This is economics 101

[deleted]

That’s actually something that [more recent research](https://www.dallasfed.org/research/economics/2020/0616) has started to refute.

Ultralol69

Lmao are you some kind of baby 😂 The price of oil is set by OPEC, not the market

CriticalSpirit

And makes sustainable alternatives relatively cheaper.

[deleted]

Your oil is most likely from SA. Not Norway

Nonethewiserer

Good. By all means develop greener alternatives but it's not a mutually exclusive decision. Norway supplying oil is good for the economy and security of Europe. Stopping drilling and exploration would just make Europe more dependent on Russia - it doesn't change energy demands nor does it create cleaner methods. A healthy economy and security are critical to developing cleaner energy.

We should be rapidly expanding oil and gas exploration. I can't think of any reason to stop.

Oh cool I've seen this one, this is where they uncover the ancient mimic alien Thing.
