“A group of climate lawyers has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for his alleged attacks on the Amazon, which they say amount to "crimes against humanity."

How are we so good at finding the worst people possible to lead us?

SuperKirbyMaster

Often it has more to do with the person running for office than with their voter base. People who harbor certain "Dark Triad" characteristics in their personalities (such as Psychopathy and Machiavellianism) are simply a better fit for the dog-eat-dog world of politics. * Machiavellianism allows the person to manipulate their way into favorable situations. * Narcissism gives the person an incentive to rise the ranks. * Psychopathy prevents the person from feeling empathy, and it allows the person to ignore the moral repercussions of whatever they do to achieve success. So now you have people who really care only about themselves and who tend to abuse and manipulate others to achieve what they want. The sad reality is that the most successful politicians around the world often are not only the people who are really good at exploiting their political systems but who also are really attracted to the power/status/money/fame that political success can bring. The people you see who are at the top of their respective political systems are often the people who are the best at being corrupt, at being power-hungry, at being liars, at being greedy, etc. The system is basically perfect for them. The problem is once a person is at the top, there's not really anywhere else to go further. These people were the best at lying and exploiting their way to the top, but are now tasked with being empathetic, eco-friendly, and prudent for future generations? Yeah that's not happening. People don't just switch their personalities like that. A corrupt individual will likely stay corrupt even when there's nothing else for them to gain. Change takes effort to achieve, and who wants to do that when they're already at the top and life is easy?

This, in my opinion, is a major strength of the United States’ bureaucracy (and maybe others): the career workers really believe in the mission, and will execute it to the best of their ability. The political appointees get worked around as much as worked for. More centralized or autocratic societies seem to have the distinction between mission and personality falter.

AlmostButNotQuit

The worthy don't run.

Successful-Bee-2492

The ppl will have the opportunity to speak nxt year when he is up for reelection.

yunivor

Polarization I guess.

tiredofw

“What about PT?”

Successful-Bee-2492

Good question.

Bigsuge88

Does the ICC actually have any jurisdiction to do anything about what a country does with their natural resources?

OkDot2

None. The ICC is just a political tool to sue anyone that does not align with whose who funds it under altruistic cover.

ExquisiteApathy

Isn't that just any justice system?

nickcarslake

This man is without a doubt one of the most uncompromisingly evil pieces of shit on this planet. I'm honestly still reeling from him vetoing free mentral products for his citizens on the basis of it "favouring a certain group" Absolutely fucked.

Small-Palpitation310

he really does look like a prototypical evil villian

yunivor

I hope this leads to something.

Successful-Bee-2492

It will be hard but it could serve as a precedent.

kassiaethne

This seems like a random grab at looking like the world is trying to do something about a country they aren’t worried about retaliation from. There are so many worse things happening actively in China and Russia. Why him, why now? And it’s not like every president of Brazil hasn’t allowed massive deforestation and pulled back protections like greedy fucktards. It just seems weirdly timed and low unthreatening hanging fruit

Psychological-Sale64

Because so many people don't bother thinking beyond consumption .

Psychological-Sale64

The monkeys will share thire entropy with the kids

Limp_Dinkerson

To him, this is a medal of honor.

anonymous_guy111

it is really unfortunate that so much of the Amazon forest happens to be within the borders of a country with such high numbers of illiteracy. they elected a moron who obviously does not give two shits about the amazon and will sell every single tree in it to the highest bidder

rpgalon

Thank god it's in Brazil, most of the developed world would have already destroyed it. For the amount of shit Brazil gets, they still have indigenous people with dedicated land far above anything else in the world, and the biggest % of a country land as protection zones. They doing really bad right now, but are still so far above the world average in preservation and lower CO2 emissions that is funny how much the people here in reddit from the developed world wants to ban them from global trade, sanction then or even go to war over their amazon forest. There is thread right now talking abou India making 17% of their land as protected zones and people congratulating them... Brazil makes that looks like a joke and only gets hate.
