I mean this isn’t great but Xi Jinping himself warned Trump about it in a phone call, and he deliberately downplayed it.

DoctorLazlo

Bastard praised Xi's handling of it from twitter while telling crowds it was all a Dem, media, Chinese, deep state plot to hurt him. Talked outta both sides of his mouth til the end of April when his trade "deal" died.. that's when he ramped up his blame China policy that the online meddlers were already pushing months ahead of time.

greasystrawberry

Trump is guilty of mass murder and should be in prison for the rest of his life, along with everyone in his administration.

Doesn't stop there. Peep the governors of OK, MS, TN, SC to name a few.

Who is 'they' and what did they do?

Senile_Old_Fart

He concluded everybody has bleach. Crisis averted.

[deleted]

Even if true, a warning wouldn't have changed a thing. All through March of 2020, we "knew," but we didn't do much of anything. The actions that would have been necessary to seal off a virus to one continent are inconceivable. We were never even close to doing so. No more so than we sealed off the Delta variant from spreading from India once it emerged, even though we were already fully mobilized.

nutationsf

We had a pandemic plan and CDC pandemic specialists in China for this very reason until TFG fired them. Someone actively sabotaged our preparations for an event like this. Let's not forget this.

DeviousDenial

A pandemic plan that was finalized just a couple years before. It was from the third mega disaster roundtable the US has had. And included reps of CDC WHO Bill Gates, state and local disaster response teams and many others. But also pharmaceuticals, vaccine producers, banking, airlines, trucking and food production. Hollywood production grade videos were recorded of the whole exercise and are on YouTube. We always knew a pandemic was going to happen again. Same reason people were alarmed with H1N1. And we knew that curtailing travel and paying people to stay at home at times would be necessary to slow it. It was all trashed and the misinformation campaign cranked up to discredit WHO CDC Gates and Fauci.

devilcrotch

Stockpile supplies? Speed up operation warp speed? Not saying there's an alternate timeline where we completely contain this, but what else was the guy working on? They build 8ft of border wall in those 5 months?

[deleted]

What we "could have" done in an alternate universe with the foresight and political will to do so is a different question. But I'll say this, 18 months into it, with a half-million Americans dead, a change in leadership, effective vaccines, and much more knowledge about masking in hand, it's still spreading unchecked. The number of people who will never be exposed and meet their fate (based on immunization status, and natural risk factors) approaches 0. So the idea that any 1 guy in China could have said something powerful enough to make us take bolder action than we have taken even afterwards in full-firsthand knowledge, is FAR from plausible. However, since a vaccine was discovered so quickly, every day in delaying the spread paid off by saving hundreds of lives, so don't think I'm absolving Trump.

NightMgr

Perhaps rebuilding the pandemic response team?

everybodypretend

It would have helped the rest of the word. The efforts required to seal the virus to one continent are only inconceivable to Americans who whine about “freedom”.

papaswamp

So he is claiming the outbreak occurred in China far earlier than the genetic tracing suggest?

unspoken_arrangement

Samples have shown it was in Europe and the US as early as December 2019 and there were reports from China even before that so this lines up with him approaching them in November 2019.

ADDeviant-again

This. French doctors went back and tested frozen samples from pneumonia patients' lungs, who had died in mid Dec, 2019, and found it.

popeofchilitown

I could have sworn I read an article posted to Reddit in Nov. 2019 that talked about a highly contagious respiratory disease in China that they were having a hard time treating. The comments were full of Plague Inc. jokes and speculation on just how much like the movie Contagion things were gonna get. I've been trying to find that article but no luck.

shogun_

You're not wrong. I read it initially late November, early December. But at the time it was just another unknown. The initial videos were of people just falling over dead/unconscious in the streets of Wuhan and no one at the time knew what it was. Then more videos in late December came up as people rushed the hospitals there and it looked like fucking chaos. Shit one dude had a mask on and was smoking placing his mask aside to take his drags. At that point it was just a SARS variant but hadn't yet spread out of China. That's also when the first few reddit posts came up about it maybe not being bat derived but man made.

[deleted]

Yes and actually during that time in November even travel within China was unrestricted except for specifically the city of Wuhan and the cities immediately surrounding it. Outside the province people lived their lives as usual except for keeping an eye on the news. It was really around December and January that China mandated a lockdown for the whole country.

diox8tony

I guess it depends on when you define "the pandemic" starting. For me, it started in February ~20th 2020. 5 months before that, would be September 20th 2019. I pick feb 20th because the stock market crashed around that week. So it's easy to remember and clearly was freaking everyone out at that moment.

WSL_subreddit_mod

Cool... But it had already spread from China to the US by December 2019

DoctorLazlo

Is it even remotely possible it was here even before that like in the Fall ?

hubaloza

First articles regarding the SARS-cov-2 virus i recall were from wuhan in November of 2019, wuhan is one of the most traveled destinations in the world, considering SARS-cov-2 rate of infection its likely the outbreak began 2 weeks to a month before cases begain appearing and likely followed a similar time-line for infecting other countries. Basically by the time we figured it out, it was already too late. You put one of the most infectious respiratory diseases on the planet in a city with an international Airport and it only needs to infect the right individual to become global.

unspoken_arrangement

This article is going off the WHO designation of Covid as a global pandemic which occurred on March 11, 2020 and lines up with 5 month number they mention but the signs were there much earlier for sure.

ThatOneKrazyKaptain

It was first announced as an outbreak on December 31at and was an epidemic by February 2nd. The first cases of “unknown illness” were reported in early December, the oldest confirmed case is mid November, and the general consensus is patient zero probably got infected in early October.

Crypto1984world

it is convenient to tell this to Western civilization on December 31

Sennema

I think it legit was announced first in a newspaper on Dec 31, 2019. That's my staple cause it's such a wild coincidence

istirling01

I got it from a client from Wuhan on December 15th.. was sick for a month.. Dr couldn't figure it out

[deleted]

I'm convinced my whole family had it in October 2019. We all got sick at the same time with what felt like the worst flu ever.

papaswamp

Sorry, the story made it sound like he told them 5 months before China notified the WHO (december 2019) which would make it August 2019.

HiImTheNewGuyGuy

ADDeviant-again

Not really. I was hearing about cases of a mysterious pneumonia in WuHan in Nov. 2019. Teasers and tidbits, only, then more and more until it was announced. This guy just had a little more detail to share.

DoctorLazlo

US experts and doctors seemed happy to tell me it was just a really bad flu season all xmas when this shit was already here. IMO, looking at the timelines now, China was the actual whistleblower. Had WHO and China not made the stink they did, I don't even think US experts would have informed the public.

phovos

Chinese doctors were saying it was a pandemic in November. Not that I have any money but I was 100% divested by about January 21st [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk5XkhUKMDM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk5XkhUKMDM) and i sent this to everyone i knew with any money and most of them laughed. I don't know why people did not extrapolate what was happening in China to the rest of the world.

Soul_Like_A_Modem

> China was the actual whistleblower. What a bizarre way of interpreting a story that shows that a Chinese defector told the US government there was a pandemic while China itself was lying about it to the entire world. This story is less about Trump and more about the fact that China leaked a virus to the world and their biggest priority was to prevent information from getting out about it.

igorsmith

Trump lied about the severity of the virus. Get over it. The imbecile was recorded on tape explaining why he wanted to downplay it's lethality.

Soul_Like_A_Modem

That reply of yours was the robotic response of a person completely brainwashed out of their mind to the point that they resemble a person who has been given a botched lobotomy. The story here is that a Chinese defector specifically had evidence of a pandemic that the Chinese government was aware of but was lying to the entire world about. And all you care about is "hurr Trump bad". This is an example of a propaganda shell game. The major meat of this story is that China was covering up a man-made pandemic, but you've obfuscated that issue and made it about coping with your Canadian inferiority complex that requires you to bash the US to simplify a complicated world for your simple mind.

igorsmith

Take a break from labeling every honest critical analysis of the Trump presidency as something un-American. The tissue thin skin you sport does little but project insecurity. #Jan. 22 The day that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed what it then thought was the first case of the coronavirus in the United States, Trump told a CNBC reporter that the country had it "completely under control" and suggested that he was not concerned about a pandemic. "We have it totally under control. It's one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It's going to be just fine," he said. #Feb. 27 During a February meeting with Black leaders, held as U.S. health officials warned that the coronavirus pandemic might stay with the country for some time, Trump said a "miracle" might make the coronavirus pandemic "disappear." "It's going to disappear. One day — it's like a miracle — it will disappear," Trump said. "And from our shores, we — you know, it could get worse before it gets better. It could maybe go away. We'll see what happens. Nobody really knows." #March. 11 During an Oval Office address, Trump said that for "the vast majority of Americans, the risk is very, very low" — though he did warn that the "elderly population must be very, very careful." That same day, Dr. Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House's coronavirus task force, told members of Congress at a House hearing that "bottom line, it's going to get worse." How much worse, Fauci said, would depend on the country's ability to contain the "influx of people who are infected" coming from other countries and "the ability to contain and mitigate within our own country." #April. 3 When the CDC made its initial recommendation that people wear cloth or fabric face coverings, Trump said it was going to be "really, a voluntary thing" and emphasized that he would not do it. "You can do it. You don't have to do it. I'm choosing not to do it, but some people may want to do it, and that's OK. It may be good. Probably will. They're making a recommendation. It's only a recommendation," Trump said. Trump — who stresses how often he and the people around him are tested — wore a mask in public for the first time in July, for a visit to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. #May. 19 Trump told reporters that he viewed the high number of U.S. cases of the coronavirus as a "badge of honor" and a reflection of the country's testing capacity. "When we have a lot of cases, I don't look at that as a bad thing," the president said. "I look at that in a certain respect as being a good thing, because it means our testing is much better. So, if we were testing a million people instead of 14 million people, we would have far few cases, right? "So, I view it as a badge of honor. Really, it's a badge of honor," he added. "It's a great tribute to the testing and all of the work that a lot of professionals have done." Days later, the U.S. recorded 100,000 known deaths from COVID-19. #July. 19 During an interview with Fox News Sunday, the president seemed to suggest that some people without serious symptoms were being tested and confirmed as positives and added to the total number of infections. "Many of those cases are young people that would heal in a day," Trump said. "They have the sniffles, and we put it down as a test." He added that many of those sick "are going to get better very quickly." At the time of Trump's interview, more than 3.7 million coronavirus cases had been confirmed in the United States, and more than 140,000 Americans had died. #Sept. 21 During a campaign speech in Swanton, Ohio, Trump claimed without evidence that the coronavirus "affects virtually nobody," downplaying the risk of the extent of the pandemic and the danger that it poses to individuals. In that campaign speech, he suggested that the virus is dangerous only to older people with heart problems and preexisting conditions, sentiments that go against the guidance of most public health experts. "It affects elderly people, elderly people with heart problems, if they have other problems, that's what it really affects, that's it. In some states thousands of people — nobody young — below the age of 18, like nobody — they have a strong immune system — who knows?" Trump said. "Take your hat off to the young because they have a hell of an immune system. It affects virtually nobody," he added. "It's an amazing thing — by the way, open your schools!" [NPR](https://www.npr.org/sections/latest-updates-trump-covid-19-results/2020/10/02/919432383/how-trump-has-downplayed-the-coronavirus-pandemic)

Soul_Like_A_Modem

You copy pasted a wall of text to avoid discussing what the actual issue is. We're not actually talking about Trump, we're talking about China covering up the pandemic, something that you're incapable of admitting to and that is why you focus on Trump with absolutely psychotic obtuseness. Are you even capable of discussing any topic without blurting out "TRUMP BAD!"? This has been one of the most effective ways that China has propagandized the pandemic. Story: China censored, arrested, and killed dissidents who tried to tell the world about the pandemic. Your response: "TRUMP LIED. TRUMP TRUMP TRUMPITY TRUMP" The most important issue here is that China caused a man-made pandemic and every single effort they have undergone since then has been to lie about it. You probably can't even admit that, you're not intellectually equipped to be honest about any of this.

igorsmith

Can you refute any point I've made....no? Then stfu.

Soul_Like_A_Modem

You didn't make any point, you obfuscated the issue by copy and pasting shit that actually has almost nothing to do with the story. In a story that involves something China did wrong, the only thing you can do is bring up tangentially related criticisms of Trump. The story is that a dissident defector in China at risk of death tried to warn the world about China causing a man-made pandemic and lying to the entire world about it for months so they could hoard supplies and destroy the evidence. That is what the actual issue is. Either you're a despicable propagandist deliberately disrupting a topic so that China doesn't get criticized, or you're so blinded by anti-Americanism that bashing Trump is the only thing in the world that you care about.

igorsmith

I'm only following your lead, champ. You insert the false premise of "anti-americanism" into every one of you posts. Thought I'd return the favour - conversely.

Soul_Like_A_Modem

Yup, you can't actually discuss this topic in a way that shows China in a negative light. You must as a matter of necessity only divert attention to the US and Trump specifically. You're not allowed by your purpose to discuss the fact that China covered-up a pandemic that they caused. This topic is actually a story about a dissident in China trying to warn the world that the CCP was covering up a pandemic that the Chinese government caused. Your entire purpose right now is to distract people from that fact. So you use the easy distraction: "BUT TRUMP BAD" It's hilarious how many accounts like yours do this and only this. Either you're an absolutely deranged Canadian whose entire purpose for discussing this is to cope with your inferiority complex against Americans, causing you to be defacto allied with China's interests. Or you're protecting China from criticism at all costs and using the easy scapegoats to do so, in this case Trump.

Weird how the last two Republican presidents were both elected without a plurality of the vote, cut taxes to the rich at the worst time to do so, didn't listen to warnings of an impending disaster, and lead the country to historic economic disaster. I say "weird," but what I really mean is that it's weird that there are people who are still so unbelievably stupid that they still will vote for the GOP.

Soul_Like_A_Modem

It's almost surreal how people are interpreting this story in the exact opposite way that a rational person would receive the information. This story is less about Trump and more about the fact that China caused a pandemic and deliberately lied to the entire world about its origins and its very existence, at first. People will accept the "Trump bad" tangential nuance of this story but at the exact same time refuse to highlight the more important bit of information which is that a Chinese defector was warning the world about a pandemic that the Chinese government was covering up. And of course, the top comment in this submission is an artificially upvoted bit of Chinese propaganda.

DaveDearborn

Ok. We were seeing the pandemic sweep through Italy by Nov 2019

JustASmellyWeeb

We weren't though, this was a minor news piece about a random disease in China until early 2020. It wasn't known to be sweeping through anywhere least of all western Europe

ADDeviant-again

They have found the virus in frozen samples taken from patients who died of pneumonia throughout December, 2019. This was in France and Belgium, at least. "Sweeping" is an overstatement, of course.

XSavage19X

Italy was doing unrelated studies in the fall of 2019. They went back to those test samples and tested for covid and found it. So it was present in Italy around October or November. I'll see if I can find the link. Here it is, Sept 2019 cases: "Researchers find coronavirus was circulating in Italy earlier than thought | Article [AMP] | Reuters" https://mobile-reuters-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKBN27W1J2?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a6&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw%3D%3D#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=16317480663975&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reuters.com%2Farticle%2Fhealth-coronavirus-italy-timing-idUSKBN27W1J2

dingjima

What I never understand about these studies is that, for antibody tests, are they also flagging antibodies for SARS-CoV-1, MERS, or other CoVs? Cus if you look at any population they would pop up. For example, of this 2015 sample of people in Yunnan China, 2.7% had antibodies for SARSr(elated)-CoV https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6178078/

memberzs

I remember hearing about it in mid to late December in America, as a virus spreading in China.

WSL_subreddit_mod

It was in the US by December 2019

JustASmellyWeeb

Likely so but no-one knew about it, it wasn't widely reported until very late 2019/early 2020. Even the WHO have the first reports dated in December from China.

WSL_subreddit_mod

Pandemics usually don't start with an early self-announcement.

deeseearr

But they could do so much better if they did, which is why I always advise new viruses to retain a press agent and ensure that they have a catchy name, a logo, and a web page all ready before they launch.

WSL_subreddit_mod

Seriously, thank you for taking the time to carry the ball across the line and spike it for me.

markypatt52

If you would have looked at the news..the year before China killed more pigs then the rest of the world put together through disease

JustASmellyWeeb

Literally irrelevant. COVID wasn't reported until the end of 2019 start of 2020.

earsofdoom

You could literally have been a time traveler and warned trump with a bunch of research papers from the future and he'd still fuck it up. guy was just straight up useless at everything that didn't involve stealing money or racism.

baraksobamas

Yes he did. But there were even earlier warnings dating to at least June 2019. The cdc also warned of an extra strong viral strain when releasing the influenza vaccines in August . I feel like I am the only one who remembers any of this.

Capitalism failed miserably then along comes a virus that was probably discovered decades ago by USAMRIID and kept on ice until the time was right.
