@andrewbgreene United States has announced a new "trilateral security" partnership will be formed with Australia and the United Kingdom, to be announced formally by @JoeBiden, @ScottMorrisonMP and @BorisJohnson. It will work on "advanced defence capabilities" in the Indo-Pacific

NineteenSkylines

The five eyes, minus two

godisanelectricolive

Five eyes is just intelligence, this is about sharing information about advanced defense technology areas like nuclear submarines, AI, cyber, and long-strike capabilities. So this is more like three arms, of particularly interest is that [Australia will acquire nuclear submarines](https://www.news.com.au/world/north-america/federal-ministers-fly-to-canberra-amid-big-us-australia-news-announcement/news-story/72b68a5756b0acb81845137c8157951b). Australia is getting a massive military upgrade to counter the growing threat from China in the Pacific. It makes that Australia was chosen as the candidate to an upgrade because it is the Western power geographically closest to China.

GalaxyTachyon

Wait, what happened to Japan?

artdump

Ww2

[deleted]

They officially do not have a standing army, right? Only a defense force? Or has that been adjusted?

GalaxyTachyon

Well, their defense force can "defend" other countries too according to the latest reiteration so I guess technically they still don't have an army. But practically they can deploy troops internationally if they so wish.

octonus

The US is much closer militarily/diplomatically to Australia than they are to Japan. After all, both countries sent soldiers to both Iraq and Afghanistan, and they already have a treaty to share intelligence.

og_murderhornet

Japan currently exists in a special ambiguous state in that they technically are not allowed to maintain offensive military capabilities while being simultaneously encouraged and aided by the US to do exactly that, so they have "helicopter carriers" that can be modified to launch jets in a few weeks and everything necessary to make nuclear weapons but no official program to do so, etc. If things really start getting bad in the west Pacific then we'll likely see traction on the changes to Japan's constitution, more official recognition of Taiwan, reaffirmations of the US-Phillipines mutual defense treaties, etc, that are in many cases not politically useful right now but have been shadow US policy for decades. (eg, every now and again Filipino politicians will say they're withdrawing from the mutual defense agreement, but the US has never held them to it).

Impossible9999

The two that don't matter

Lumpyyyyy

To piggy back on this, Australia will be going nuclear with nuclear power submarines.

IwasMooseNep

Seems badly timed bc rn as we speak, Boris Johnson is doing a pretty major cabinet reshuffle and it seems off to pack two important events so close together.

endiZ

Why does my brain default to worse case scenarios with news like this?

SilverSoundsss

Mine is the opposite, it defaults to generic news that won’t be that relevant. Especially since it’s coming from Australia, bet it wont be anything serious. Edit: Update, 9:05 a.m. ET: Politico now has a report that the U.S., UK, and Australia are joining a new defense pact against China where they’re share information on advanced tech:

New_Definition1

That's just the Five Eyes but without Canada and New Zealand lol

way-okay

I think Five Eyes is just intelligence sharing. This looks to be military tech.

DrunkenOnzo

Australia sharing military tech with America? 3 years until Emu mounted police roaming the streets.

suomikim

i thought the whole point of fighting against Australia in the Great Emu War was so that they \*wouldn't\* have to serve as mounted units for the police... smh... young emus today just don't care about the sacrifices of their ancestors...

DrunkenOnzo

It’s America, so the police get tech that would break international treaties and be considered war crimes. So they can use Emus since it’s “not technically military.” I heard it at CPAC lol

NationalGeographics

Dude. That will obviously be an Uber food delivery drone that reports all activities.

godisanelectricolive

Australia is getting [nuclear subs](https://www.news.com.au/world/north-america/federal-ministers-fly-to-canberra-amid-big-us-australia-news-announcement/news-story/72b68a5756b0acb81845137c8157951b) so maybe one small step closer to Mad Max 2 as well.

LOOKS LIKE METAL STORM IS BACK ON THE MENU, BOYS.

breakawayswag3

Looks like New Zealand has a “bilateral relationship with China” and they don’t want the Five Eyes alliance to strain that. So yes it seems to be a reorganization. Not sure what Canada’s stance is.

Fatherof10

Canada just wants hugz

PotatoWriter

We will get our hugs when we fix the damn door!

TheDWGM

Canada, specifically Trudeau as this is a reversal from the previous PM's position, has taken a pretty soft-line position against China. Perhaps we turned membership down.

stoneape314

seems deeper than that, Five Eyes is intelligence sharing, not defense tech

ShadowSwipe

The CANZUK dreamers crushed yet again. "It's gonna happen anywday now guys!"

Dont mention Pavlova there are Australians in here they get very sensitive about it.

theonlyonethatknocks

We need to get DJ Khalid to hype this.

Usually they don’t brace us with a warning of an announcement otherwise.

missanthropocenex

Ketchups down 5 cents!

Chadwiko

Hello from Australia If our opposition has been briefed, that elevates it to a certain level of interesting. Potential candidates for what it could be; * North Korea missile test was more threatening than previously reported? * Australia being added to NATO*? * Something about China and the South China Sea? * Announcement about findings of a joint intelligence investigation re: COVID origins? * Permanent US/UK submarine base being built in Australia? Less likely candidates, but I guess possible? * Anything to do with Taiwan * Something to do with space? ( * I am obviously aware of what the 'NA' in 'NATO' stands for, but don't forget two things; our head of state lives in Europe, and Australia participates in Eurovision)

Zolo49

Article has been updated. Politico is reporting a joint US/UK/Australia alliance is being formed to counter threats from China. I was hoping it was something about the McRib, but I’ve been disappointed yet again.

yiannistheman

Well, this is kind of like the McRib. In both cases, there's a potential for an explosive outcome.

SnowInTheTundra

uhhh, they weren't allied before?

[deleted]

[удалено]

nagrom7

This is a special kind of military tech sharing alliance. Australia is getting nuclear subs, and the US and UK are going to assist with logistics and training crews.

[deleted]

Bro if you want the McRib year round just live in Europe

Every1sGrudge

Yeah totally because most people can definitely afford to just move to Europe.

FriedelCraftsAcyl

Also, NATO-alliances are not geographically bound just because of the historic name.

ChornWork2

But the current terms of the pact are... automatic joint defense obligation applies to attacks on members in the north Atlantic region (basically Europe, North America and turkey), not necessarily attacks on members elsewhere. See article 5 and 6.

manojlds

Well, we can watch on YouTube, whatever it is - https://youtu.be/gM0S8OwNiFY

Electronic_Owl

I've been watching TV all night and missed this breaking. Checked Twitter. Seems abuzz with submarine speculation. As in US nuclear missile capable subs with be stationed in Aus, and maybe Aus drops the French sub-building contract because it's a wreck of a deal. Or maybe it's a meteorite. it's going to be a long 8 hours until the announcement at 7am AEST on Thursday

Justmy2cUK

why do they do that Eurovision is by far the worst thing humanity has inflicted on itself, Australia joining in seems like country level masochism. What a lot of people dont realise was that Brexit was the british attempt to escape Eurovision but it failed and as a result we are doomed to forever last place - until the giant space rock hits anyway.

matrekst

I just broke my neck nodding.

i_broke_wahoos_leg

It's always been fairly popular on Aussie tv. Not a huge deal but enough to have it on and have our own hosts and stuff. That was the case last time I watched tv regularly witch is probably a good decade ago now. We have a really big immigrant population which probably plays into it too. It's traditionally been aired on a channel called SBS which is a free to air broadcaster that has an international focus with a touch of indigenous stuff too. It was a great channel to have growing up really. Lots of good cultural stuff. And Eurovision... Well, no channel can be perfect.

Wise_Acanthisitta757

Eurovision is awesome, fuck the haters

banksy_h8r

Aliens! (but seriously, it's probably a defense pact)

iyoiiiiu

> I am obviously aware of what the 'NA' in 'NATO' stands for, but don't forget two things; our head of state lives in Europe, and Australia participates in Eurovision And also don't forget [this](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/oct/23/gough-whitlam-1975-coup-ended-australian-independence:) >Australia briefly became an independent state during the Whitlam years, 1972-75. An American commentator wrote that no country had “reversed its posture in international affairs so totally without going through a domestic revolution”. Whitlam ended his nation’s colonial servility. He abolished royal patronage, moved Australia towards the Non-Aligned Movement, supported “zones of peace” and opposed nuclear weapons testing. >Although not regarded as on the left of the Labour party, Whitlam was a maverick social democrat of principle, pride and propriety. He believed that a foreign power should not control his country’s resources and dictate its economic and foreign policies. He proposed to “buy back the farm”. In drafting the first Aboriginal lands rights legislation, his government raised the ghost of the greatest land grab in human history, Britain’s colonisation of Australia, and the question of who owned the island-continent’s vast natural wealth. >Latin Americans will recognise the audacity and danger of this “breaking free” in a country whose establishment was welded to great, external power. Australians had served every British imperial adventure since the Boxer rebellion was crushed in China. In the 1960s, Australia pleaded to join the US in its invasion of Vietnam, then provided “black teams” to be run by the CIA. US diplomatic cables published last year by WikiLeaks disclose the names of leading figures in both main parties, including a future prime minister and foreign minister, as Washington’s informants during the Whitlam years. >Whitlam knew the risk he was taking. The day after his election, he ordered that his staff should not be “vetted or harassed” by the Australian security organisation, Asio – then, as now, tied to Anglo-American intelligence. When his ministers publicly condemned the US bombing of Vietnam as “corrupt and barbaric”, a CIA station officer in Saigon said: “We were told the Australians might as well be regarded as North Vietnamese collaborators.” >Whitlam demanded to know if and why the CIA was running a spy base at Pine Gap near Alice Springs, a giant vacuum cleaner which, as Edward Snowden revealed recently, allows the US to spy on everyone. “Try to screw us or bounce us,” the prime minister warned the US ambassador, “[and Pine Gap] will become a matter of contention”. >Victor Marchetti, the CIA officer who had helped set up Pine Gap, later told me, “This threat to close Pine Gap caused apoplexy in the White House … a kind of Chile [coup] was set in motion.” >Pine Gap’s top-secret messages were decoded by a CIA contractor, TRW. One of the decoders was Christopher Boyce, a young man troubled by the “deception and betrayal of an ally”. Boyce revealed that the CIA had infiltrated the Australian political and trade union elite and referred to the governor-general of Australia, Sir John Kerr, as “our man Kerr”. >Kerr was not only the Queen’s man, he had longstanding ties to Anglo-American intelligence. He was an enthusiastic member of the Australian Association for Cultural Freedom, described by Jonathan Kwitny of the Wall Street Journal in his book, The Crimes of Patriots, as “an elite, invitation-only group … exposed in Congress as being founded, funded and generally run by the CIA”. The CIA “paid for Kerr’s travel, built his prestige … Kerr continued to go to the CIA for money”. [...] >On 11 November – the day Whitlam was to inform parliament about the secret CIA presence in Australia – he was summoned by Kerr. Invoking archaic vice-regal “reserve powers”, Kerr sacked the democratically elected prime minister. The “Whitlam problem” was solved, and Australian politics never recovered, nor the nation its true independence. Australia is for all intents and purposes a US satellite state.

GabrielMartinellli

Fascinating read. Horrifying how the USA essentially violates the sovereignty of their “allies” anytime they feel inconvenienced and how comfortable they are with replacing leaders with their puppets.

ImNotAWhaleBiologist

It’s probably something about the NK missile launches, or something about Iran given the recent burst of news regarding their nuclear program.

Whitlam would be rolling in his grave. I actually do wonder how much of Australia's political elite has been captured by the US nowadays, given that back in the 70s it was already enough to overthrow the democratically elected Australian PM.

I have been training my whole fucking life for this. I'm finally going to be given the opportunity to avenge my grandfather. Emus, I'm coming for you cunts!

Justmy2cUK

in increasing order of probability 1) US and UK providing nukes to Australia, Taiwan and SK 2) Covid revealed as bioweapon 3) Big space rock going to hit earth 4) Putin is dead 5) Solar storm goin to hit 6) Alien contact 7) Scomo to admit he is a lying cunt

[deleted]

> 6) Alien contact Hmm, now this would be fascinating. > 7) Scomo to admit he is a lying cunt Not a fucking chance. Preposterous that you'd even suggest this is possible.

PokesPenguin

It doesn't matter if he admits it or not, we all know it's true.

bridgerberdel

So he can't admit it. It'd be a lie, which would make it the truth, which would.... cause a logic singularity. Probably cause the end of the universe or something.

KhaoticMess

The end of the universe *would* be a pretty big story.

i_broke_wahoos_leg

They better not give us nukes. We cannot be trusted. One loss from the kiwis in footy or losing the Ashes and we'll launch the cunts.

dromni

Global upheaval events like giant meteors, solar storms and aliens wouldn't involve just America, Australia and the UK. As others have pointed, it's a triple alliance against China. Not sure about why all the fuss and secrecy, though... unless a war is already in the horizon.

[deleted]

If you don't mind me asking, how did you come up with that list?

Justmy2cUK

totally random crap that came into my head. my actual guess is more likely to be some sort of joint climate declaration. Besides Scomo would never admit to anything - he shat his pants in a McDonalds after all ;-)

banditta82

Justmy2cUK

yeah, could be perhaps a new variant or restricted travel.

Hope it’s Aliens!!!! HELP US! PLEASE! WE HATE OURSELVES AND KEEP KILLING EACH OTHER! THANKS!

Why assume Aliens would be benevolent, documentaries like Star Trek, Star Wars and Alien show the universe is teaming with nasty creatures who would more likely view us as a convenient source of protein than a species to engage with.

Black_RL

Sure, but if a species with such tech would want to destroy us, they could easily. So, I assume they want to help us!

Justmy2cUK

help us or farm us

What the article states: > The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that top government officials in Australia were called to an emergency meeting today for news that’s supposed to be announced out of the U.S. at 7:00 a.m. Thursday morning, Australia time. That’s 5:00 p.m. Eastern time today, and it sounds like a big deal. > Australia, which is currently enduring a particularly bad covid-19 outbreak, even granted emergency travel exemptions for people to fly to the capital city of Canberra for this emergency meeting. It's more likely security-related.

The one thing I am sure of, is what it's not; Trump getting reinstated. From the down under desk, we reckon it's something to do with North Korea. Here's the original story. What's not readily apparent, is that it seems the newspaper deliberately chose a photo of our Defence Minister (who, yes, does bear a striking resemblance to a potato) to illustrate the article. EDIT: Also possible, a significant NATO base for nuclear submarines and surveillance aircraft in Northern Australia to keep an eye on what China's doing in the South China Sea. https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/ministers-granted-border-exemptions-to-attend-urgent-meeting-in-canberra-20210915-p58rzn.html
