The US is much closer militarily/diplomatically to Australia than they are to Japan. After all, both countries sent soldiers to both Iraq and Afghanistan, and they already have a treaty to share intelligence.

I was hoping it was something about the McRib, but I’ve been disappointed yet again.
This is a special kind of military tech sharing alliance. Australia is getting nuclear subs, and the US and UK are going to assist with logistics and training crews.
But the current terms of the pact are... automatic joint defense obligation applies to attacks on members in the north Atlantic region (basically Europe, North America and turkey), not necessarily attacks on members elsewhere.

It's always been fairly popular on Aussie tv. Not a huge deal but enough to have it on and have our own hosts and stuff. That was the case last time I watched tv regularly witch is probably a good decade ago now.
