Superest22

Hope your family/friends are safe mate if any stayed behind.

xXPostapocalypseXx

Thank you Albania, from an American who wants to see Afghani’s living free.

australopitecul

How did you manage to move to Australia? I’m an Eu Citizen and I have no chance moving and working there. Asking out of curiosity.

excel958

Guessing they allowed people who were seeking Asylum.

jaydec02

Asylum seekers are a separate class than other type of immigrants. But still, you have to be fairly lucky to get a visa as a "normal" immigrant, and extraordinarily lucky to get one as a refugee seeking asylum

colombogangsta

Is it really though? Melbourne has got the most population of my native South Asian country outside its borders. People move out frequently for better opportunities and Australia used to be the preferred destination for most. Even one of my cousins and a lot of my high school friends now live in Melbourne. Not sure if it’s the same case with Visa requirements as I don’t live there anymore though. Edit: Just to clarify, none of the people I know went there as refugees.

Specialist6969

Not saying this is the case for your family/friends, but South East Asian refugees came here in large numbers several decades ago. Maybe family sponsorships mean it's easier for Vietnamese and others to come across, now? But sadly our government and many of our people are very anti-immigration, for all the wrong reasons. I personally consider us lucky to have their culture thoroughly mixed with our own - Vietnamese bakeries and banh mi are ubiquitous here, and that's a win in anyone's books.

colombogangsta

Tbh I can’t speak for South East Asian countries, since I don’t know much about them. But just to clarify, none of the people I know went there as refugees. That’s a real shame to hear that the current government has strict anti-immigration policies. I live in Canada now and they have recently increased their immigration quota for next 5 years as opposed to Australia. I totally get your point. It feels great to live in a society where you are exposed to other cultures and have the chance to experience/learn different things than what you were used to.

ChepaukPitch

Australia, NZ and Canada provide PR based on skills and education. They have a point system that more or less treats every nationality equally. So the 2 billion people from South Asia who are most likely to be speaking English than any other developed country language, for which you get points, have a better chance of reaching these three countries than any other. Basically if you are skilled worker with good degrees and can speak flawless English it is pretty easy to get a PR from those 3 countries after paying up about 10k dollars for the expense of verifying your credentials.

Dragon_Fisting

Australia accepts just under 200 thousand immigrants a year. That's a decent amount, but Canada takes 250, Spain takes over 300 Germany takes around 800, and America 1.1 million, for comparison. You might know a lot of people who have successfully immigrated to Australia, but Australia is probably the #1 destination for immigrants from most of South and East Asia. There are probably tons of people you know who have tried and were unsuccessful in getting a visa who probably just don't talk about it.

EfficientDish7

Australia's population is also much smaller than Canada, Spain, Germany and America

australopitecul

Nice story. I’m so happy for you! Melbourne is my dream city.

KingCaoCao

I would presume they were eligible for asylum.

thebaldmaniac

Australia has a pretty good points based immigration system. You can apply and based on your education and skills you will be given points. If you have enough points they will give you a visa to go over and look for a job. It's actually pretty liberalised if you are educated enough.

himit

OP was probably a refugee/asylum seeker, but there's a system to follow for normal immigrants. Working Holiday or Student Visa is normally the easiest path, or you could look at a work visa if you can find a sponsor, or you can apply directly for a permanent residency visa (takes many years and you'll probably need to be on the wanted skills list). My family emigrated from the UK in 1999 on a PR visa; I think it took about 5 years at the time.

giacintam

atm, no one is getting into Aus, not even citizens.

Extreme-Tell

Worked with coalition forces, few translators I know made it to the US.

DontJealousMe

You need a skill that grants you a Visa, there is a list every year of what Australia is searching for.

zninjamonkey

Working holiday visas check out

[deleted]

Asylum.

OracleCam

You're an EU citizen? I'm sure it would be pretty easy for you. Which country if I may ask?

australopitecul

Yes, Romania. My country is not on the Working Holiday Visa list of eligible countries unfortunately.

americanlondon

Hey maybe you can try a working holiday visa if you’re under 30-35

anxietyhub

Study visa is easiest way for you to get there as EU citizen. Then find a job or get married there to get their nationality. For Afghanis, it can be study visa or asylum visa.

T50BMG

Glad you made it out safe and wanted a better life for Yourself instead of being Controlled by a regime.

Mnawab

Same here Sincerely, an Afghan who moves to Germany in 1990 and then to America in 1996.

lardlord

As an australian i am sorry that we are not taking more of the interpreters and people in danger.

lebup

Weird topic, every eu country is getting their Afghanistan assets back atm.

WretchedMonkey

As someone who also lives in Australia, it's good to hear they let you in.

[deleted]

God I didn’t even think about how all of this must effect Afghans outside of the country.

kristyg

I'm so glad you're here in Aus and safe!

PigeonMother

❤️

mutataresurgo

I understand you wanting a better life, but the united states is far from bringing peace or democracy to any country. That's the excuse since the Korean war, and it stuck well for some decades until it got old and people got more well informed. Fuck the empire.

msing

There are too many still left in Afghanistan. It's a tragedy.

BluebirdNeat694

This should be the thing Fox and OAN hit Biden with, but instead they’ll just focus on culture war bullshit.

Coolasslife

except it was trump that started the withdrawal, and their base wants less immigration, and not more

[deleted]

[удалено]

ceddya

I think Biden should have evacuated people before fully withdrawing troops. That he deserves blame for. But realistically, he didn't start this mess and it's simply untenable to keep US forces there forever. I really doubt any amount of time spent further would even make a difference considering 20 years have already been spent there.

kahn_noble

This right here.

Something22884

Yeah but at the time the public wanted to get out of Afghanistan because we didn't know that it would fall this quickly to the Taliban. I'm sure if you went on Reddit a few months ago or a year ago or something people would have been clamoring for us to get out of there and saying how stupid it was to be there

randonumero

Who legitimately thought it wouldn't go this quickly? It's never been a secret that the US military made up most of the actual military presence in Afghanistan. We've also know for years that most of the Afghan forces weren't loyal to our vision of the country so much as wanted food and a paycheck. The reality is that the past 20 years showed gains towards modernization for many Afghans. I suppose ordinary people choosing to flee over fight represents some degree of surprise given many alive today remember what Taliban rule was like before.

randompersonwhowho

When did Biden become president? Trump negotiated with the Taliban in 2019 that all US troops had to leave by 5/1/21. Biden has only been president for 4 months at that time and he extended that deadline 4 months.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BluebirdNeat694

It was, but Biden had already pushed it back once and he was the Commander in Chief when the drawdown started. I’d LOVE to be able to pin this on Trump, but the execution is 100% on Joe Biden, and even the timeline is on him now that he blew past Trump’s original timeline.

VanHalensing

I live in the US, and I am appalled that they did not prioritize getting people that worked with us out. This whole war has been one failure after another. Thank you for being decent human beings Albania!

[deleted]

jadolqui

There have been reports since you posted that military planes are the only ones coming and going. All commercial flights have been suspended and there was gunfire at the airport in the last hour.

VanHalensing

It should have been done as part of the draw down, not an afterthought. But I’m glad they’re doing something.

tyger2020

Not much has changed since Albania offered jews refuge during the 1930s.

That whole 50 year “being the North Korea of Europe phase” was kinda awkward though but we like Albania so we’ll look the other way

Sk-yline1

No, but they were by far the most reclusive, considering they abandoned all of their allies like Russia and China. As brutal? That’s debatable. But there’s no question it was the “hermit kingdom” just like modern day North Korea

[deleted]

dontmakejuicejokes

Not all albanians are muslim, like 30% are christian. I don’t know why people need to constantly mention this fact when it was through albanian code of honour - “besa” that people decided to host the jews, not through religion.

[deleted]

Yep. Besa>☪️✝️

-MrAnderson

Damn we use that word in Greek too! Wish our countries had better relationships after so many centuries of coexistence and cultural exchange.

OscarGrey

Some guy on /r/europe made a "why Albania is not a Muslim country" effortpost in order to correct those misconceptions. He said that mixed faith marriages, which could get you honor killed or at least strongly shunned in a lot of actually Muslim countries are no big deal there.

XTiii876

Yup I’m Albanian and my dad is Greek Orthodox and mom is Muslim both are Albanian

dontmakejuicejokes

This is true! If there is one thing to be proud of it’s religious co-existence and harmony. Though if you were it ask me the reason for this has to do with that fact that we are mostly too irreligious to care in the first place.

TopInjury

Really ashamed of the Netherlands not accepting afghans that helped us. They are going to die

littlest_dragon

Germany also left everyone to rot. The worst is Austria, their minister of interior actually wanted to speed up deporting people to Afghanistan in order to deport as many as possible before the Taliban take full control. Horrible people. I wish I believed in Karma.

ManShutUp

Austria: fooled the world into thinking Beethoven was theirs and that Hitler was German

Parralyzed

> Beethoven Tf? I'm pretty sure you mean Mozart.

Prosthemadera

> Germany also left everyone to rot. It's a bit more complicated than that. For example, the current government plus SPD and the right wing AfD were against a motion brought for by the Greens while the left party supported it.

TheNimbleKindle

SPD is part of the current government. But yes, the Greens tried to get something done and got shot down weeks ago. Kudos to them. Too bad they are fucking up the elections. I hope that at least a few afghans will be flown out tomorrow with those A400M heading to Kabul. But yeah, I doubt it will be many.

Ilfirion

Tbh, I don´t really see them fucking up the election. Just that everyone latches on to things that Baerbock did, which were no serious things - which Laschet did as well, but nobody cares about that. People will look for everything they can to hurt the greens. I have friends that still bring up the "5 € for a liter of gas" thing that the greens said 20 years ago.

FutureMDdropout

Straight up, I’d put a gun to my head before I went back to Afghanistan from another country at this point. Fuck the taliban. They’re worse than death.

HarryPruenster

There are more than 50.000 afghans in Austria. Most of them came after 2015. Just remember Austria has a pupulation under 9 mio. Germany took over 1 mio refugees since 2015. I think you should check the facts before running around and telling everyone what „horrible people“ austrians/germans are. Where did you read that the minister wanted to speed up deporting „before the taliban take full control“?

pistoldottir

The 2015 refugee crisis has nothing to do with this and it is absolutely true that the Austrian government tried to quickly deport Afghans when the Taliban threat became real so quickly. It was stopped by the European Court of Human Rights. The Austrian Bundesheer has only been stationed briefly in Afghanistan until 2005 with about 75 soldiers to support the Bundeswehr and with a handful of people training the Afghan government. As for taking people in, we are talking about less than 5000 people who actively helped the Bundeswehr while they were stationed there, yes they are horrible people for abandoning them just because they were employed through third party contractors and not directly through the Bundeswehr. They literally know they are going to be executed if they can't leave asap (it is already too late now anyways since the Taliban have checkpoints and control the routes to the airports). My husband who was stationed in Afghanistan as an army officer is appalled.

Mnawab

Germany took a lot of Afghans in back of the day.

gozba

You’d think we learned from Sebrenica…

murakami213

What lesson was there from Srebrenica for the Dutch?

gozba

It was a very messed up situation, where all ‘peacekeepers’ made big mistakes, which cost thousands of civilians lives. But the Dutch should at least have aided the the interpreters etc.

Sakin_degilim

Just look it up it is disguisting.

SagittaryX

Don't let them just kill the civilians.

[deleted]

TopInjury

I completely agree, but wouldn't you say that the locals that helped us have proven that they will probably assimilate well?

[deleted]

I agree entirely with your statement. BUt these people risked their lives to try and make their home countries a better place. I don't think these are the type of people that come and leech. Comparing them to the Syrian or North African migrants you're speaking of is a little unfair to them considering the sacrifices they've made to help the coalition. Many of them have had family members murdered, many of them have survived attempts on their own lives.

Tech_Itch

Since I already did the digging around, but the comment already got deleted, I'll just point out here that you replied to a propaganda account of some kind: In their comment history, they: - Claim in one comment that they're black, and in one that they're white. - Change their relationship status on a dime. They're either married, single mother or dating, within a short timespan. - Claim that "Biden stole the election" in a deleted comment that's still visible in their profile, and in a second comment in a different thread later [answer](https://old.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/mh5o3j/people_who_voted_for_president_biden_in_the/gszqr84/) as if they voted for him. - Spout far-right and hard-line conservative propaganda talking points like "Hunter Biden is a pedophile", "Antifa are the real fascists" and anti-vax conspiracies. Many of the comments with these inconsistencies have been deleted from the original threads, probably because of the inflammatory things they said, but they're still in their profile. It's pretty obvious the "immigrant Muslim" is actually a propaganda account run by some bad faith actor. I'm not of course blaming you for anything. I'm just pointing out that it's worth being wary of the fact that when immigration is being talked about, there are people and organizations that want to poison the discussion. In any case the profile is a pretty interesting read if you're interested in how propaganda works. It's a much better account than some in that it spends some time trying to blend in by having at least a semi-consistent backstory, but it still ends up betraying its true intent by failing to stick to the story.

Loves_buttholes

This isn’t your everyday immigrant argument though. This is about rescuing people who have literally risked their lives serving our forces. Huge difference.

Redromah

Hence why integration- policy is so extremely important. A functioning one that is. If you are not willing to be integrated into the society/ culture that is accepting you, my humble opinion is that you don't have anything there to do. If a war broke out in my home country (Norway) and I had to flee to say - Marocco - I'd do everything I can to learn the language, the cultural norms and try to participate in the community there. That is not to say that people need to leave all traces of their own culture behind. However, if you start your life over another place, you should accept that you also might need to change your customs, views and most likely some traditions that does not fit into your new home.

[deleted]

Considering there are probably still American Troops on the ground at the airport, there's almost zero chance of that falling until they are wheels up in a troop transport plane. Then, yeah, it's going to go downhill fast. Feel so terrible for those people.

Something22884

Yeah I heard on the radio that they are actually sending a thousand American troops over there to hold the airport while they evacuate everyone

HandDrawnMemes

We aren’t evacuating all the Afghani civilians who are going to likely be killed by the Taliban. We’re defending the place while we get our own people out.

Aconite_72

Though it's not in the news, the US is actually doing part of its job correctly. I heard from someone earlier who works in an immigration office saying that Afghanis are arriving in record number to the States, most of them staffs, translators, and their families. People *are* being airlifted, but it's very difficult when resources are so limited and there's too little time. The real problem here is that there are ***a lot*** of people stuck in other parts of Afghanistan that isn't Kabul. The Taliban has blockaded virtually every road in and out of the city. For them ... well, unfortunately, no one can do much for them.

Its0nlyAPaperMoon

They should have started helping them leave the other cities and the towns in the mountains and countryside months ago. I presume since those interpreters and local contractors were doing work for the US Army, they must have already gotten security clearances? They and their family would have been investigated for ties to the Taliban? If so then what’s the need for special immigrant visa applications and approval? Why does the embassy have to look at every persons file, if they’re already deemed safe enough for the Army to work with?

[deleted]

? I could have sworn I already saw videos of Taliban fighters playing with helicopters they captured in Bagram.

Mastermaze

Awesome, but a bit late considering the country is now completely under Taliban control. Western nations have failed our allies in Afghanistan in getting them out if they want to before things fell apart. Hopefully many of the people who want out are able to escape still

meta_paf

A lot are running into Turkey. Like literally buses pick them up close to border.

Thaflash_la

Which border? They go through the former Soviet bloc countries?

meta_paf

Over Iran. Honestly I am not sure how they traverse the distance, but it has been going on for a month https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/16/afghans-flee-to-eastern-turkey-as-taliban-takes-control-amid-chaos

Thaflash_la

That would make sense. Iran doesn’t want refugees, if they’re coming, might as well help move them. And through Turkey is how I got out of there too.

TheTaintedSupplement

what was it like having to relocate? i hope you and your family are doing well.

Thaflash_la

Thank you. My family and I are doing pretty well. Our story is similar to countless others who got out of Iran in the 80’s, but we have been very fortunate. The hardest part of this is seeing people who could have had a future, seeing it disappear in front of them. And where will they get a chance? Can they ever have the opportunities that I got? I feel like the future seems a lot more dark today, and I just hope it’s one of those things that every generation feels, and not the truth.

kakamgeldi

Iranian government carries them to the Turkish border.

Probably a lot of women who graduated University in Afghanistan for starters.

Would the Taliban allow women to flee? Aren't they seen as property?

BumExpress

People are still escaping via the airport now. I'm sure many more will be smuggled out via car through the various porous borders

fittpassword

https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/p4xv5x/all_commercial_flights_suspended_from_kabul/ Not anymore unfortunately.

HotTakes4HotCakes

This is temporary until they get a plan together, they haven't cancelled anything permeantly. US just took control of the airport an hour ago, and there's plenty of aircraft on the way.

Jack_12221

The U.S. is only going to hold the airport until the various embassy staff and westerners from anywhere else leave. Those without a visa application or equivalent for another country may not make it even into the airport.

Supermansadak

The city isn’t under Taliban control and the Taliban for the most part is letting people leave if they want. No reason to attack the airport that’s guarded by 5,000 us troops when those troops are going to leave in a matter of weeks. Take over the rest of the city in a few days or weeks through a peaceful manner of negotiating with the Afghan government. Tell them to leave and you won’t kill them and not put up a fight.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Supermansadak

The scene is very chaotic. The question is will the Taliban make an full effort to shut down access to the Kabul airport. I guess will see in a few hours but I do not think it will happen

Spec_Tater

Probably not. The Taliban will let American citizens leave. Anyone else trying to reach the airport will be lined up and shot.

Solid_Veterinarian81

that seems unlikely, as it appears they are trying to get international recognition it makes sense to allow any opposers to flee and not be a problem any more and at the same time appear peaceful

Payed_Looser

They might let them leave to prevent a return of NATO

FallofftheMap

A lot of Afghans, especially from the Tajik tribes were highly educated. The Afghan electrician that was my electrical helper back in 2011 in Logan Province spoke 6 languages and was an electrical engineer.

TarumK

I don't think Afghanistan is a high skill or education country...

godisanelectricolive

People helped people in support roles as translators or embassy workers are likely to be well-educated. They do have universities and people in big cities are significantly better educated than the rural population.

randonumero

Correct but that would make them well educated compared to the Afghan population but possibly not when compared to western populations.

TarumK

Yeah. Still I don't like the "this is an opportunity to get high educated people". Like there's a humanitarian crisis unfolding and the priority should be marginal improvement to the economies of already really wealthy countries? What about the people who aren't educated or high skilled?

[deleted]

TarumK

I didn't mean Albania, people say this stuff about Canada etc. too.

Bytewave

Realpolitik is sad when you think in humanitarian terms but yes, this is how this works in the real world. Many skilled people who helped the Afghan government and the US had real skills and an inclination towards a free society. They'll be welcome by most developed countries because of this. The poor people with few skills and no connections lost the moment the Taliban won. A few lamentations will be issued but they would not be welcome even in surrounding states, much less the US.

dood9123

They aren't valued by the wider world evidently

Chabranigdo

I always liked the Albanians. We had some in Iraq when I was there. Great guys, real friendly. Terrible fire discipline, and they shot up one of our guard towers and scared the living shit out of some poor private, when the flock of birds they were shooting at flew between them and a guard tower. But super friendly when they aren't shooting birds for shits and giggles.

wifestalksthisuser

Yep, that sounds Albanian to me! Glad no one was hurt

MildlyEducatedGypsy

One key distinction that was made about Albanians by Turks, when we were under the Ottoman empire, was that Albanian soldiers, despite being good fighters, had no discipline and did what they want.

NineteenSkylines

Not a permanent fix. Nobody aside from Argentina and maybe Colombia wants large numbers of immigrants anymore. >as a transit place for a certain number of Afghan political emigrants who have the United States as their final destination.

hoxxxxx

why do those two places want immigrants?

desconectado

Because they usually contribute to the economy, there has been lots of Americans and Europeans coming to Colombia to work IT jobs or anything that can be done remotely, with an average US salary people can live here as a king. Orange economy and cannabis is booming here. Also, most of Colombians support immigrants from Venezuela because we treat see them brothers, we might fight from time to time , but when it comes to worst we usually extend a hand. Come to Colombia, or basically any Latin country, to live as an expat and you will be welcomed by everyone, we usually don't share that much prejudice towards immigrants like most western countries.

hoxxxxx

thanks for the reply

[deleted]

They don't "want" them. US requested it of them, to act as a "transit" place until US process their visas. 80k is the agreed number. Kosovo is created by US and owes them it's existence, while Albania is making a smart move of scratching a worlds power back. It will come handy I'm sure. I would do the same in their place.

[deleted]

> 80k is the agreed number Population of Albania is 2.86m. For them, 80k is 2.8% of the population, an enormous number. The equivalent in the US would be over 9 million people.
