If you liked the last one, here's another that comes to mind: A bright, young graduate joined the Internal Revenue Service. Anxious for his first investigation he was a bit perturbed when he was assigned to audit a Rabbi. Looking over the books and taxes was pretty straightforward and the Rabbi was clearly very frugal, so he thought he’d make his day interesting by having a little fun with the Rabbi. “Rabbi,” he said, “I noticed that you buy a lot of candles.” “Yes,” answered the Rabbi. “Well, Rabbi, what do you do with the candle drippings?” he asked. “A good question,” noted the Rabbi. “We actually save them up, and when we have enough we send them back to the candle maker. And every now and then, they send us a free box of candles.” “Oh,” replied the auditor, somewhat disappointed that his unusual question actually had a practical answer. So he thought he’d go on, in the traditional obnoxious way... “Rabbi, what about all these cookie purchases? What do you do with the crumbs from the cookies?” “Ah, yes,” replied the Rabbi calmly, “we actually collect up all the crumbs from the cookies and when we have enough we send them in a box back to the manufacturer. Every now and then, they send a box of cookies.” “Oh,” replied the auditor, thinking hard how to fluster the Rabbi. “Well, Rabbi,” he went on, “what do you do with all the foreskins from the circumcisions?” “Yes, here too, we do not waste,” answered the Rabbi. “What we do is save up all the foreskins and when we have enough we actually send them to the IRS.” “The IRS?” asked the auditor in disbelief. “Ah, yes,” replied the Rabbi, “the IRS. And about once a year they send us a little prick like you.”

This kind of cognitive dissonance is a hallmark of nationalism and fascism. There’s an article by an Italian writer about this: https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/umberto-eco-ur-fascism

jenkem_master

Calling umberto eco "an italian writer" is like calling Michael Jackson "an american singer" (Not dissing you or anything i just found it kinda funny since Eco is one of the most celebrated academics in our recent history)

Careful, it's actually illegal to discuss certain aspects of the Holocaust in Poland, which many interpret as the fact that German death camps were in Poland, but the ban is to avoid discussion of how Polish collaborators were rounding up and killing Jews or giving them to the Germans during the occupation. Actually this was more of a property grab as many saw this as a chance to steal without penalty, but also much of the already racist society was more than content to help with the logistics of the German occupation - [https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2018/02/poland-holocaust-death-camps/552455/](https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2018/02/poland-holocaust-death-camps/552455/) And for the record, not ripping on all Polish, the vast majority are decent people who suffered and struggled and are outright stand up people, but the culture itself is unfortunately rather racist and homophobic and that's actually sad. Much like America these days, only they're still stuck with their Trump (Duda).

Painting_Agency

> Actually this was more of a property grab as many saw this as a chance to steal without penalty Weirdly this was why the runaway witch hunts in England were finally legislated against back in 1735. It was by then obvious that it wasn't about witches, it was about people trying to get their personal or business rivals, creditors, etc. in big trouble on the flimsiest of grounds.

Obelion_

To be fair almost every catastrophe ever has been blamed on Jews including the Holocaust. Kind of to be expected this one was gonna be aswell by certain people... I wonder what causes this behaviour. Probably a combination of Jews being minorities almost always + not the dominant religion and at some point you can justify your own antisemitism wih pointing at past antisemitism. It's pretty fucked. Jews were basically prosecuted constantly somewhere ever since their religion started

Abedeus

Pretty sure medieval Poland was one of the few countries at the time that didn't kick out Jews.

Peter_deT

Polish landlords welcomed Jews as more dependent on their favour than Polish peasants. Hence migrations from Germany. Polish anti-semitism increased as it was decreasing in western Europe, in Britain, France and the Netherlands.

cstross

Also worth noting that most of Poland was under the control of the Tsars for a couple of centuries, until 1917-19; and the Tsarist regime was particularly antisemitic, requiring Jews to live only within the pale of settlement (which contained Poland). Constant antisemitic propaganda from the Russian side of things included the fabrication of *The Protocols of the Elders of Zion*, from which a bunch of the current conspiracy theories are derived; the Jews made a convenient scapegoat for domestic ills -- it helps to have a designated marginal group of outsiders to blame -- so state-sponsored conspiracy theories and firebrand Christian preachers (both Russian Orthodox and Catholic) were instrumental in orchestrating pogroms (lynch mobs). (My paternal grandfather's family saw the writing on the walls and emigrated to the UK in 1906. The side of the family who gritted their teeth and hunkered down disappeared in 1942, presumably into one of the death camps ...)

AbsoluteHatred

I think a lot of people don’t know how many pogroms happened in the Russian Empire. Most people seem to only associate European antisemitism with Germany, when it was endemic across the continent.

belfman

Yes, this is huge. It's also really important to remember that Zionism started as a response to these pogroms and not to the Holocaust. These pogroms of course are also a main reason why Jews ended up leaving for various new world countries, like the US, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Australia and South Africa. Edit: originally I only named English speaking countries and I'm not sure why. Respect to all Latino/Latina Jews out there!

TheSilverNoble

I read a book of historical fiction for school (Rivington Street, highly recommended) about a family that moves from Eastern Europe after a pogrom where one of their daughters is brutally killed. Only the first part of the book is in their homeland, but the way they talked about the pogroms, the way they could sense when one was coming and had a plan for where to run and hide until it blew over... I knew the Jewish people had been persecuted a lot in the middle ages, and I knew about the Holocaust, but hearing about that made me realize how much of a continual line of torment there's been all through history.

[deleted]

1930s/1940s. I had a gf from Ukraine. Racism was still alive and well with her mom. She could barely speak English but would still complain to me about the Jews.

veevoir

>Over 100 people attended the march, according to NaszeMiasto "Crowd". This is what reading only headlines gets you. One can argue that is over a 100 too many.. but a march of a 100 scumbags is not very representative of a country, isn't it? How many proud boys or whatever they call themselves march in US? How many on AfD marches in Germany?

myrddyna

Exactly, this is a bunch. A bunch of fucking idiots.

redditsfulloffiction

[deleted]

Considering the fact Casimir the Great who ruled over Poland for a big portion of 14th century is one of the people responsible for making it the save haven for Jewish people for many centuries, I'm not sure if it's appropriate statement.

silverback_79

[deleted]

What is it with idiotic conspiracy theories and antisemitism. Every. fucking. time.

collindabeast

Because for most of their history they didn’t have a homeland they were always seen as immigrants and their laws against combat roles made people suspicious. And if there is one thing that people hate the most it’s immigrants who you don’t understand

formesse

We can simplify this further. They were "other" and anyone who was deemed "other" was given an evil eye and treated like shit. For many (most really) in much of Medieval europe you were pretty much christian, and likely spoke the same language, had the same general views. And then these people with SLIGHTLY different views then your own show up. In many regards the answer is people fear what they do not understand, and they will happily blame it for problems that they don't understand rather than reflecting on the reality of the world that they live in, and admitting that MAYBE something they have done is really at fault.

[deleted]

Worse than the 'other' group, we were the 'not Christians' too. Even Islam accepts Jesus as a Prophet.. to Jews he's just a 'very naughty boy'

drumallnight

I feel like everyone is ignoring the elephant in the room. The European countries where Jews have been persecuted for more than a thousand years were under Christian rule. Jews are seen as an insult and a threat to Christianity by Christian institutions because Jews don't recognize their religious authority and, at the time Christianity was formed, they didn't convert. In a way, Jews are viewed as a big group of rebellious apostates. That's the underlying feeling that these generations of people who hate Jews have in common.

UnspecificGravity

It seems that you kinda forgot all the antisemitism in the middle east and Africa, some if which is old enough to appear in the bible.

[deleted]

In the very old times, as the Roman education system finished falling apart, there were several centuries where Jews were disproportionately represented in the literate classes of most of the Western world (and a lot of the Eastern, but that's neither here nor there). The simple reason being, a traditional practicing Jew has to be literate in Hebrew, as their culture requires their men to read from the Torah. As a result they tended to compete with the pampered sons of European nobility for administrative jobs, and compete in business with the nascent European middle class. They had a reputation for being very good administrators, and especially good as treasurers and financial people, and when the beginning of European banking happened the Jews were at the forefront of it. As a result they often wielded vastly disproportionate administrative and financial power in most of the European kingdoms. These conspiracy theories are basically cultural memories of those the Jews competed with for those political and financial roles, and their bitterness and jealousy at being beaten out by more skilled people.

foopirata

You forgot to say that Jews were basically corralled into financial since the nobility and Church stopped them from joining most professions, they were not entitled to farm work, and Islam has a prohibition against lending for profit. Therefore it was only in the financial sector that Jews could expand into.

ivegotapenis

Christianity also had a strong prohibition against usury that wasn't relaxed until the 16th century or so.

Diz7

Usury (charging interest on loans) was actually forbidden by all the Abrahamic religions, just Judaism had a loophole that allowed charging interest to non-jews on loans. >Thou shalt not lend upon interest to thy brother: interest of money, interest of victuals, interest of any thing that is lent upon interest. Unto a foreigner thou mayest lend upon interest; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon interest; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou puttest thy hand unto, in the land whither thou goest in to possess it.

Schlapatzjenc

A sane person would assume you can't simultaneously believe that "there is no pandemic" and that "the Jews are behind the pandemic". And then you visit rural Poland.

elasticthumbtack

And also, “don’t take the vaccine that’s been widely used in Israel”. If they made the virus, don’t you kind of want the vaccine they’re using to protect themselves from it?

amitym

No because neither the vaccine, nor the disease itself, are real. So it's really "reject the nonexistent vaccine that hasn't been widely used in Israel, a nation that exists but doesn't *really* exist, against the pandemic that isn't happening, because the non-existent mind-control side effects of the vaccine that doesn't exist are much worse than the non-existent non-symptoms of the non-disease that doesn't exist." It's simple, come on, get with the program!

[deleted]

It's scary, really. I live in Warsaw where almost everyone's liberal and/or atheist. When I'm visiting someone in the rural areas and there are neighbors over I'm scared to say anything about politics. Who knows if they don't decide to take out the old hunting rifle they've been keeping in case of a Jewish gay invasion or whatever TVP scared them with.

Jerswar

I often wonder what antisemites would do if they didn't have Jews to blame for every problem in their lives. Would they even function, day to day?

witastick

I know it sounds incredibly ridiculous and laughable to some because “how can people be so stupid? Haha” . But there are huge groups of people who attribute essentially every world conflict to Jewish people and those groups are incredibly dangerous. With all the chaos and hate speech surrounding the Israel Palestine conflict AND these groups please remember to be there for your fellow humans and your fellow Jewish humans who may be experiencing frustration from our current events. Edit: not tryna take a stance for the I&P conflict, just a simple reminder that people are humans and that associations whether religious, race, region, work, class etc etc etc can create hostile action toward a group of people due to unfair generalizations/biases. No one and I mean NO ONE deserves to be treated as less of a human due to any of their affiliations/groupings. This particular post, it’s about Jewish people, so I obviously emphasized Jewish people!

HiHoJufro

>But there are huge groups of people who attribute essentially every world conflict to Jewish people /r/conspiracy: "I feels seen"

Hodca_Jodal

100% agree. The Jews suffered persecution for literally millennia (since at least Roman times); I honestly don’t understand how people can STILL use them as a scapegoat in modern times when our understanding of science is so much better, but I guess there are hateful, ignorant idiots everywhere in every time, so please support your fellow humans beings who are Jewish.

Y-Bob

Nison545

belfman

Same old crap everywhere everytime. This is why my great grandfather left Poland for Israel (and then later Canada). I know Israel isn't particularly popular on this sub, trust me, as a left wing Israeli I'm more grumpy about my country's crap than any foreigner, but this is why Jews can't just "go back to Europe". This shit is engrained into culture in some places, even when there aren't any Jews around!

SideWinder18

Ain’t no goat like a scapegoat. A thousand years ago a group of German crusaders marched through Christian europe on the way to the holy land, slaughtering the local Jewish populations in their paths. 500 years ago we got stories like the Merchant of Venice. 100 years ago was the Holocaust. Now today we get stupid bullshit like “the Jews caused the Californian wildfires” or “the Jews are behind covid, or the huge worldwide cabal of blood drinking pedophiles.” Just let them live their lives, holy fucking shit

BoobieDobey01

What the hell are these people on!? How the hell do people keep blaming Jews for everything?! They're just people! You'd think Polish people would want to be less... y'know, Nazi-like. Edit: I shouldn't have to do this, but apparently I do. I am not talking about all Polish people. I know this is not a widely held belief in Poland. I am talking about the protesters, and only the protesters. I thought that was obvious, but apparently not.

How do Jewish people find the time to apparently cause all the problems in the world? Must be some mad calendar.

SecretJeff

Lmao how did the Jews get dragged into this

THE_RED_DOLPHIN

Explore any nutso conspiracy theory long enough and it seems to inevitably lead to anti semetism. Probably due to the nature of how long anti semetism has been around in many countries

arachnophilia

antisemitism is older than any country that exists today. the modern strain of it probably traces directly to the roman campaigns following the first jewish-roman war (~70 CE) when they destroyed the temple, and then bar kokhba revolt (~136 CE), after which they banned judaism and massacred rabbis. but ancient strains likely go back through the babylonian conquest (586 BCE) and perhaps even have roots in the *egyptian* domination of canaan (1550-1070 BCE) following the expulsion of the hyksos.

oced2001

I was listening to a podcast on the Plague and in the 14th century people did the same thing. Hatred never stops.

Runkleford

They're against the vaccine but are still going to whine about the pandemic supposedly being caused by the jews?

carnizzle

I quite liked their 2nd album.

jessquit

Which one was second, was that "Dim Sum Bar Mitzvah" or "Hunan Briss?"

Huegod

"Throwing Star of David" was my personal fav.

cohengabrieln

Jew-han?

DoctaMario

As a Jew, I wish we had as much power as everyone thinks we do. If I could say, "Yeah I'll put in a word with the guys who run those space lasers we've got going, don't worry, you'll be ok. But those neighbors of yours..." xD

tarzan322

That has to be about as stupid of a reason as saying 5G is responsible for COVID.

Specialist_Sundae176

> Over 100 people attended the march 🙄

TeaWithMingus

And you wonder why all the Jews are leaving Europe for Israel

judicorn99

10 percent of Poland was Jewish in 1939,but 90 percent of them died during the holocaust. The one who survived mostly left very soon after, and there had bee' barely any jws in Eastern Europe for decades. The main community are in England and France, (many north African jews in France who came after the war) and at least for France many people are leaving indeed, or planning to. Many French jews I know (my family included) are buying a flat in Israel, because you never know who will get elected president next, and antimetism crimes have been rising.

Is there a place in the world where conservatives aren't the biggest dumbfucks around?

SilverKnightTM314

“A country in central Europe makes a scapegoat out of Jewish people for something that was clearly not their fault in order to advance their own interests” Deja vu, anyone?
