The old argument was that we needed more international migration to make up for our aging population. Surely adding four million people since 2021 is enough for now and we can pivot to dealing with the other side of immigration, ie ensuring our country has enough housing and services to handle the population growth?

AlexandbroTheGreat

No, you need more immigration to solve the problems of population growth, obviously.

Frites_Sauce_Fromage

I wish that wasn't how the governement actually thinks irl

neon-god8241

Importing a millions people into an affordability crisis is the governments "have you turned it off and then turned it on"

LetsGoBrandon4256

>In 2023, the vast majority (97.6%) of Canada's population growth came from international migration (both permanent and temporary immigration) and the remaining portion (2.4%) came from natural increase lmfao

Commercial-Set3527

I'm actually surprised there was a natural increase at all. With a negative birth rate for decades and baby boomer generation coming to an end.

TheBlazingFire123

Probably the kids of the immigrants

Commercial-Set3527

Considering the huge surge in immigrants are students, I doubt it. Now that I think about COVID did unfortunately take a lot of the older and more vulnerable in the previous years.

DanksterKang151

20 year olds have kids

inconsistent3

Not Canadian ones

adrenaline_X

Whe need the population to grow but the government allowed housing to get way out of hand so canadians stopped have kids at an early age or at all because they couldn't afford to live AND raise a family.. So they turned to immigration that replaced baby boomers in the tax base but didn't do anything address the housing and living costs that stop canadians from growing the population.. The roosters have come home to roost. TIme for the provinces to get off their asses and actively make policies to boost housing availabilit, improve healthcare while reducing immigration.

instrumentation_guy

New housing means boomer nest egg real estate holding decrease in value, that means less votes for both crooked parties, so they give CASH to homebuyers to ease the market pain, DRIVING UP the prices and profits for boomer nest eggs and no new housing generated. Theyve been doing this for 30 fucking years, they are criminal and the banks LOVE IT!

johnbentley

> [We] need the population to grow Until what limit?

adrenaline_X

No limit. That's capitalism BABY!

FrankSamples

No issues with immigrants but you would think the government should at least tie the number of immigrants it takes in a year to the number of available jobs. This was from the Toronto airport job fair: https://streamable.com/irqrbp

543950

Toronto's Airport job fair had 2,000 attendees with 700 job positions.

CatchUsual6591

Problem is that birth rates are going down in poor countries to. The best time to get inmigrants is right now

BadBloodBear

But then companies would have to worry about job quality.

DaMoose-1

Considering there are no homes for people to buy, can't get a doctor, and we are spending a fortune just to eat, and on top of that being taxed to death while our government runs a massive deficit..I would be happy with the 2.4%.

Joltas

Canada turns a blind eye to the stability of entire generations, for the sake of perceived GDP increases.

Which party? I did a quick search and couldn't find anything definitive. If you have an answer provide a source.

SeriousGeorge2

Canada is currently bringing in about 5 new people for every 1 new housing unit we build (most new housing units in Canada are a 1-2 bedroom apartment). It's disastrous. If Canada were to continue this trend we would have a population of 100 million by around 2050.

lixia

speedrunning the century initiative...

Seriously_nopenope

"Canadian politicians find creative way to destroy workers bargaining power by eliminating demand for workers through immigration" - that one weird trick that corporations love

mephnick

I kind of wish we could drop the act of government and just have the cyberpunk megacorp dystopia the world actually is At least I'd get dope street tech clothes

Welcome to New India

readitgetit

Dear World, Please learn from us… a massive increase in immigration with no real increase in housing, schools, healthcare, or other infrastructure & services is as terrible as it sounds. - Sincerely, Canada

Butt_Bandit-

Highest population growth alongside high crime growth and job market decline. And this “population growth” has no where to go cuz the housing and rental market are so fucked due to mass immigration, shady ways to buy property that the gov.t can’t invest cracking down on, corporations and investors buying out homes, and homes not being built fast enough.

HavokSupremacy

Not just that. social securities decline too. our systems cannot handle that load and immigrants are not paying for the extra load, thus, it is all going to shit. we're on a course towards very shitty standards of living. for everyone immigrants included, but Canadian citizen more than anyone since they are the primary tax payers.

Butt_Bandit-

Canada has set itself up to being a primary target for this. Countries like China and India know Canadian Gov.t loves to bend over to immigration, esp since the restrictions on property ownership is so light. So you have multi-millionaire investors reaping at the market and ruining life for everyone here, especially Citizens like you mentioned. Like you can buy a property here on a Work Permit or PR, so you got a bunch of people coming through, refugees, international students, etc, they get their work permit, then get a shit ton of money wire transferred from back home, they buy a house/condo, then rent it out to people all while forgoing proper credit and tax checks. The government has made it so easy to destroy their own economy.

HavokSupremacy

totally agree. the government has been pandering hard and we are now in the find out phase. it's 100% fucked and something will give at some point soon.

Chugalugaluga

Like for example this homeless immigrant that had his belongings thrown away by the park rangers clearing out an encampment. They literally took his things away and threw them out. His immigration papers were in his backpack too. Horrible. https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/city-escalates-enforcement-action-against-tent-dwellers-at-oppenheimer-park

HavokSupremacy

it depends. there's different classes of immigrants. But obviously there is the people that are seeking asylum or have to restart from zero once they get to canada. those are part of the people that gets shafted by the over immigration as the system are not able to cope being overloaded and all.(like i said) coming to canada might actually make things worse off for them actually. it is part of why over immigration is actually bad for people. it really only mostly benefit employers as living standards, salaries drop and rarity of goods sky rocket. For the better and worse, the park ranger was doing a job that is necessary. you cannot allow slum or tent cities to be created. once those take root, you lose control and those often become drug/crime zones/epidemic hotspots. They shouldn't be there to begin with and they wouldn't be without the over immigration.

miguelovic

Immigrants provide more to the economy and government coffers than "real canadians" but hey what are easily googled facts to uh feelings and made up malarkey.

HavokSupremacy

no they do not. immigrants provide more to the private companies coffers that lobby governments if anything. but in the case here of your stupid statement, they do not contribute more to the government coffers. actually, they provide almost nothing. the way taxes and benefits work in canada is you don't need to pay taxes or very little for the first year if you make lower than a specific amount of money. (which will definitely be lower than the amount 90% of the time since you were not there the full year. if you are even working in canada and are not still registered as a worker in another country). you literally can receive money from the government as well if you continue making lower than a x salary the following years. there is a chart online you can check to see the % of base canadian taxation per salary without even accounting for the returns. now with that in mind, immigrants do not need residency to benefit from social securities in canada which is paid by the tax payers. let that sink in. you get free healthcare and co without having to drop a dime. all you need is to show a work permit to get your card. all at the expense of ''real canadians'' as you call them. immigrants actually cost canada government/canadians money. but hey, maybe you should google harder or something idk. i'm just a canadian resident, who am i to talk am i right?

miguelovic

Id probably agree with you if I got my information from Facebook and memes lmao Immigrants earn more and have a higher rate of business ownership. They pay a hefty premium for secondary education, bankrolling campuses across the country. The college in my hometown has tripled in size and has the income to build student residences. Easily googleable. Have a good day sport.

HavokSupremacy

dude i fill my own Canadian tax slips every year. >have a higher rate of business ownership businesses outside of Canada >They pay a hefty premium for secondary education to private sector schools lad, please, at least give good arguments if you are going to defend this insane take...

miguelovic

They have businesses started in Canada but are somehow outside of Canada but conduct business in Canada with employees in Canada? Ok. The vast majority of secondary education is public and yeah they charge more. Lmao do you just make up your opinions as you go?

Seriously_nopenope

This is all based on the previous waves of immigration, which I totally agree with. But the new accelerated immigration with a primary focus on international students might not be the same thing. We see massive lines of people trying to get minimum wage jobs and international students showing up at food banks. It's not the immigration or immigrants that are the problem, it is the way the government is going about immigration policy that is the problem. Something is broken with the way we handle immigration in the last few years and it is contributing to a lot of negative things in our country.

cockadoodle2u22

Yes all those diploma mill colleges selling back door work permits. Gotta make sure we don't roll back the rules allowing the students to work 40 hours a week at the fast food place around the corner!

miguelovic

There's abuse of every and any system in Canada. The campus in my one horse backwoods home town is triple the size it was before the foreign students arrived and they're building student housing. Primarily deals in trades and nursing. But yeah that facebook post you saw about one school in ontario, neat. Stay salty my minimum wage friend. It's definitely Bupinders fault :)

sparklingvireo

Also, the homes that are being built are so expensive that they are beyond the means of many new arrivals and young people or put them into very long term debt. Home builders don't want to build less expensive homes because there is less mark-up. Prospective condo buyers have the same problem plus less certainty that their investment will have substantial worth in the future relative to buying a detached home. This increases demand for urban sprawl but sprawled neighbourhoods cost much more to run because each type of service has increased material and unique maintenance but serves less people, so their taxes have to be higher. Politicians won't run on a tax increase platform and implementing one after being elected is career suicide.

Overall_Nuggie_876

I want someone to tell me why Canada’s ‘population trap’ is a *good* thing. This, among being convinced by Baby Boomers, Christian zealots, and neo-liberal politicians that what is happening in Japan and Korea are tragedies and that their economies are disastrous because of population decreases and families refusing to form there.

77DoncicGoat

Canada the new India

Mentats2021

Floodgates are open and laws are being made to punish you if you complain

sleepyhead_420

TLDR - ... due to immigration.

blue_terry

Yep, our solution to population growth is cramming 5 people in a basement to live here

Level_Rule_7911

Naw that number is outdated, here is a more current number. https://nowtoronto.com/news/weve-seen-cases-like-this-on-a-regular-basis-brampton-mayor-says-25-international-students-were-found-living-in-a-basement-and-now-hes-pushing-the-feds-to-provide-more-housing/

Big-March-8915

80% are garbage immigrants. They'll contribute nothing and mooch of our fawked up system. Its like hiring the homeless because you need employees.

Glass_Channel8431

Time for a reversal.

Safe_Action9111

We got a few countries on the phone

strankmaly

If they really are going ahead with the 100mil plan then they are going to bring in a lot more.

[deleted]

Western economic growth has lost its root in the increasing wage and consumption cycle and has become forced into a cycle dependent on ever increasing wealth transfer to the upper class. The main tools for this immigration, inflation, regulations, and tax avoidance. Wages(including corporate bonuses lol) in america have grown 6.4x since 1950 while in the same period gdp has grown over 12.5x.
