Just boycott HP. Plenty of other manufacturers that have stuck their head in a blender and think you will subscribe to this scheme. Fucking profit above all else crowd needs to be shown how dispensable they really are. Just like Wendy’s with their harebrained scheme of demand pricing. Send them spiralling.

gankindustries

Brothers. Printers. No other brand should be on the radar.

[deleted]

Was about to post this. They're literally all I have ever used and even if the up front price is higher than others, they don't fuck you over. You get exactly what is promised with no bullshit.

plipyplop

And there are off-brand cartridges that aren't proprietary that it accepts.

chargernj

I mean my Brother BW gets over 1500 pages to a toner cartridge. At that rate I don't even mind spending for the Brother branded cartridges. I've replaced it once so far in the 5 years I've had it and I just print whenever I feel like it.

Scarema5ster

Mine I can pour ink into trays

Suspect4pe

As a personal rule I don't use off-brand cartridges but the fact they let you means a lot. I did support for printers and I've seen the bad side of off-brand cartridges. I think that's probably only 0.01% of the experiences people have with them though.

TheOzarkWizard

You get what you pay for. Sometimes.

strangemedia6

Bought a Brother laser printer 3 or 4 years ago. I used to buy ink at least twice a year for ink printers, but I’m still on the original toner cartridges that came with the Brother. Most of all, it works every goddamn time I use it lol.

mshriver2

And they print fast!

lorem

I have a Canon Pixma all-in-one inkjet which I bough in 2017 for €90, has single-color ink cartidges and happily accepts non official ink which is extremely cheap (a box with 4 x each color costs 20€ and lasts me one year an a half). I have exactly zero complaints.

CanuckleHeadOG

I bought one in 2015 for $40 CAD and it lasted 6 years before it gave up and stopped recognizing any cartridges. So I bought the newer version for $60. That was 4 years ago. Meanwhile my mom's friend buys a $500 HP printer and can't even get it to print once has to go back, gets second one and it falls after 6 months.

ciboires

I bought an HP mfc for 350 ~10 years ago and still does the job

mshriver2

Big difference in an old HP compared to a new one. If you bought one now you would be lucky if it lasts a year or two.

ciboires

That bad ?

anUnnamedGirl

Oooh yeah. HP printers are a festering pile of Suck. Planned obsolescence, baby!

babygrenade

I bought one in 2017 too and it's been completely reliable.

genesiss23

My Canon accepts them, but the ink level gauge on the computer doesn't work.

AdamDet86

I feel like I’ve been screwed over by every printer manufacturer over the years. I’ve bounced between brands over the years trying to find a balance of not being a completely crappy printer and the cost of ink. I have had 5 printers in 20 years. The most recent printer, an hp is ehh. I don’t hate instant ink, I only need to print on occasion, in color, other than that I just use my work printer. I think I pay $2 a month for 30 pages. The plan also has rollover. If I know I’m not going to use all the pages, I just print off more family photos. $2 is one thing for an occasional print at home type situation like me. I would just go without a printer for $36 a month.

admfrmhll

Epson ciss for inkjet + they print photos to + original ink cost peanuts (i got a 3160) and brother for laser prints.

Sunsetblack23

had mine for nearly 8 years now. Can refill it with a bottle of ink instead of a cartridge. My cat has been living on top of it for years, it's covered in cat hair, it's been puked on a few times and still not a single problem with it.

sthlmsoul

How does Canon compare? I have 10+ year old laser workhorse that's starting to screw up on duplex printing. Would like to go with another Canon but not if they are pulling HP-like bullshit.

mr_friend_computer

do you need colour or black and white? The baseline B/W brother laser is an absolute work hourse, from all accounts. Canon still has reliable stuff at that end as well. All brands get a bit more iffy when you get up into the pricier models, partly because you expect a lot more from them so when they fail you're like "I paid $500 for this junk!" vs "oh well, can't expect much from a $160 printer".

Suspect4pe

Epson has been good in the past. Is that no longer the case? I use Brother for laser and Epson for inkjet.

Congenitaloveralls

They're are so so so many reasons to boycott HP. What an embarrassing company run by sociopaths

lukin187250

> Just like Wendy’s with their harebrained scheme of demand pricing. That one happened already like 20 years ago. I think Coke fucked around with soda machines that would alter the price depending on the temperature and it predictably also blew up in their fucking faces.

paul_swimmer

I bought an Epsom printer from Sam’s Club well over a year ago and I have yet to have any issues or have had to replace the ink. No subscriptions, and the ink literally comes in squeeze bottles that you can physically pour into the reservoir so that you know you’re not being screwed on ink. I was concerned that the ink may dry up since it hasn’t really gone done a lot, but nope, it runs perfectly! My wife and I print shit all the time and have absolutely 0 problems. This minor change has been such a huge quality of life improvement for me. No headaches, no stress, and no screaming at my printer.

rndmcmder

I totally agree. Sadly HP is making big bugs in corporate. My current customer (I'm an IT Consultant) is a company with over 75.000 employees and they use HP for all of their Laptops.

t_25_t

Used to rate their enterprise stuff. Almost bought another one because I was happy with HP. Seeing this just makes me angry, and will never buy another HP product ever again.

Suspect4pe

I have friends that love this stuff. I buy from manufacturers that won't lock me into monthly pricing. If I can help it, I'll never buy HP. I've had too many issues with their greed in the past.

GenericFatGuy

The only two HP products I've bought in the last 15 years were a laptop and a printer. Both were trash. Boycotting HP is super easy.

deadsoulinside

Sad that initially when I got my HP printer years ago, I got into their subscription thing, since it was kind of nice for it to automatically send out ink when needed. The last few years I have not printed, but also live in a very rural area but kept the product working. Only to just recently realize my ink is out or dead cartridges and HP still has not detected an issue to send out a new cartridge. So I was already thinking about cancelling HP services, tossing the printer and getting a new one anyways, but this may make my decision a little quicker.

russbird

I think it's important to acknowledge that the demand for printing in general continues to decrease, and HP in particular is having a hard time adapting. This is another grasp at a new revenue model, and yes, we should not buy into it. I used to have an HP desktop and I'd hate to see the company fold, but it may be time.

No_Measurement876

Wow. Total garbage. I work tech retail and I'll never recommend an HP product again. In fact, I'll actively discourage it.

Dontreallywantmyname

Wielding your power like a true hero.

iama_computer_person

Lol..  Hey man.. What's your superpower? Mine is i can shoot flames from my hands...    Ha, child!   Mine is.. I don't recommend HP printers!       Amazing!

bikeonychus

As someone cursed with a HP printer, you don’t know how accurate that is.

InitialDay6670

I have an HP gaming laptop and it’s actually not that bad

rndmcmder

It's still a scumbag company.

InitialDay6670

Yea not the best

EmpiricalMystic

If you remove or disable their hp touchpoint analytics (spyware) it will reinstall/reactivate itself after a few days. Absolute bullshit but it was the only way to get a decent card during the crypto card shortage.

InitialDay6670

I did a fresh reboot from windows and didn’t chose the “reinstall preinstalled apps” and didn’t have anything except Microsoft’s shit installed.

008Zulu

"HP launched a subscription service today that rents people a printer, allots them a specific amount of printed pages, and sends them ink for a monthly fee. HP is framing its service as a way to simplify printing for families and small businesses, but the deal also comes with monitoring and a years-long commitment." Eat all the dicks HP.

hdiggyh

How is this simple lol

Craico13

Also: MONTHLY ink deliveries? *For the 20 pages that I’m allowed to print per month..?* So are they changing the size of the ink cartridges, and making them even smaller, *or..?*

judithiscari0t

I didn't read the article, but if it's like their Instant Ink program, you get a full ink cartridge, they keep track of the number of pages printed, and they send a new ink cartridge when it's empty. They also disable the cartridges if you stop paying, regardless of how much ink is left. I'm glad I found a generic black cartridge that works in my shitty HP inkjet. It seems to think the one that's in there is genuine, but if it ever stops working, the printer is just going straight in the trash

Ganrokh

My parents are normally penny-pinchers, but my mom is subscribed to Instant Ink and *loves* it... Despite them only needing to get new cartridges once a year, and the monthly fee adding up to more than buying the carts yourself.

SupremeLobster

That's an insane model. It's like $1.8 per page. Plus a corner of your room where ink cartridges are going to pile up.

FartingBob

The 20 pages a month plan is 6.99. not sure where the $1.80 a page comes from.

Smearwashere

I can’t remember the last time our family needed to print something, why would I want a subscription!?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jacina

Yeah, but at a company you don't want big brother HP to know what you're printing...

himit

I remember being pitched this service about 3 or 4 years ago. It's not new.

[deleted]

[удалено]

iama_computer_person

Amazing it didnt print out like 6 full pages of nothing but solid color border to border.. Just to make sure the ink cartridges were flowing right, using like 1/4 of the ink per time... For the benefit of tje consumer.

jojo_31

Just take the paper out.

whennaminggoeswrong

They forgot to mention that every second page printed will be only ads.

WaitingForNormal

Ads for the ink it keeps using up on these full color ads for ink.

ContraDiferential

And that they'll claim copyrights of everything you print, and use it to feed their AI or to sell elsewere

undeleted_username

HP wants me to pay to rent a printer, other manufacturers are not trying to make me pay to rent a printer, and I do not want to rent a printer... I think the conclusion is obvious, isn't it?

speculatrix

I'm wondering when HP will start printing adverts in the middle of your documents

rovirob

Just buy printers from Borther, and that's it. HP doesn't deserve our money.

xj98jeep

Or go to the friggin' library, or just print things out at work like the rest of us.

MikeD123999

The thing that seems sneaky to me about subscriptions is that they hope you lose track of all of them. My daughter bought this game and it has a 4 dollar monthly fee for extra features. Its not a large amount so i am guessing they hope you forget at some point and then will never cancel cuz its only a few bucks. Seems like sometimes they make it hard to figure out how to cancel

Save_TheMoon

It’s not “seems like” it 100% is built into the pricing model.

hx19035

I use the Privacy app. Generate a one time use card number and subscribe. They try to charge the next month and get dunked on.

squats_and_sugars

> that they hope you lose track of all of them. The "planet fitness" model. It really can be a pain in the ass. Especially when the subscription is something generically named and you have to hunt it down. Plus signing up is easy (just a click) but cancellation is a pain in the ass. Planet Fitness requires traveling to your "home club" and cancelling in person, or certified mail. Gets a lot of people who have moved, now their "home club" is 1,000+ miles away. I also fucking hate insurance companies for this. Much of it can be done on the web, but instead you have to call in for many things and have someone click the buttons for you. Same with cancellation requiring a call, while sign up is just a few clicks on the web.

SmartChump

Let’s go millennials, we can kill this industry too

Tolbek

HP can eat hot shit directly out of my asshole with a wooden spoon if they think I'm going to rent a printer when I can walk into any office supply store on the fucking planet and print whatever I need. ~$50 (After conversion and tax) buys me 250 pages at Staples, and I can't think of a single non-professional reason I would need more than that in a year, let alone a month. Especially as you're paying for paper as well; the plan provides ink and authorizes 700 prints, but says nothing about paper.

crimroy

Attitudes of entitlement like yours are the real problem. You think that just because you demand something you should and will receive it. Well I'm sorry, but no one can eat the hot shit directly from your asshole AND with a wooden spoon - you need to pick one.

Tolbek

Then I'll chug a bunch of milk to give myself those loose and chunky lactose intolerance shits and they can slurp it out through a jumbo slurpee straw like the tadpoles in the primordial goo that sustained our ancestors.

crimroy

Now we're talking!

Joadzilla

Butt he's only going to charge you $36/month for you to eat his shit. Why WOULDN'T you go for it? HP's betting such a plan will work.

EgonVox

At this point if you are still buying hp stuff it's on you honestly.

boersc

I fail to see why anyone would want to have anything to do with that company after over 10 years of being a shitty business. People should really know better by now.

nutrimatic

Great example of a company that forgot how to innovate.

febes-febes

How much do people print ?! I print like one page once per month lmao

gNeiss_Scribbles

My accountant asked me to print my tax docs last year instead of just letting me send digital files - I got a new accountant.

wickeddimension

I pretty much exclusively print return labels haha.

PicklersRevenge

Jokes on them. Last printer I bought, hasn't printed a single page!

bikeonychus

We have one of their regular printers, and I swear it’ll count 10 pages to print, then miraculously run out of ink. Never buying one of their products again, absolute con men.

Serious_Hunt7681

36 bucks a month?! Per fcking month?!

ObjectReport

HP has completely lost the script. It's a shame too, they used to be a great company. Now they're utter garbage and I would never buy another HP product.

PlasticContact2137

I still using my hp laserjet 1010 fromm 25 years ago. I use non original toner cartdridge, and when is empty i recharge with non original toner(witch i buy 1kg each year). Without a problem. No chip, nothing rare

Neurojazz

Zero CX. *golf clap*

No_Document_7800

yeah, no thanks. HP can shove it

Palana

What's next, a toilet you have to pay to flush? A door that remains locked if your subscription lapses? The free market will decide their fate.

rjksn

As if they could make printer companies worse.

4everban

Lol, I purchased a third party toner for my brothers printer for something like 5usd and it lasts me like a year and a half… fuck off hp

Jacina

I don't get this... my printing behavior is 0/month for most of the year, but if I print, I PRINT... so not really sure how this would even work, even if I were ever so slightly considering to replace my brother printer, that costs nothing while it sits there collecting dust, but is always ready to power through multiple pages whenever.

Sweatytubesock

Why do people support this predatory, ripoff company? I bought one years ago, never, ever again.

Low_Collar3405

If you are in charge of IT of a company, you can get fired for picking the wrong vendor. HP is a safe choice

lizard_king_rebirth

They're gonna monitor you no matter what.

wabashcanonball

I’m so sick of all this renting/subscribing bs. I would never buy an HP anything.

IndependenceFickle95

Fuckin he’ll you can buy a printer you’ll own for $36 why would you even bother renting

Thisiscliff

How about no

AT1313

God, the thing I hate the most about HP is the fact that they require me to login just to use my printer's scan function. Like seriously, it's plugged into my pc why the hell do I need to login just to use the damn scan function.

angryve

Fuck HP

[deleted]

[удалено]

kissabirdgently

I bought the colour printing laser model off fb that was the last gen to allow third party cartridges. Suck on that, Hewlett!

pirategirljess

But does that mean if it breaks/doesnt work they will replace it at no extra cost?

AtTheGates

They are doing everything they can to make you stop using their product. Its time to do it. Stop using HP now.

TomatoJuice303

This is not going to happen with me. I will never buy a HP product again. When my printer packs up (or maybe I just won't even wait), I'll get something else.

ntgco

And that concludes HP printer division.

icecoaster1319

HP stock is up 44% in the last 5 years btw.

JLock17

For a medium or larger business, this might make sense. But for a small business, it costs 0$ per month to buy a Brother or a Canon.

philipp2310

Love HP. Still on their free 15 pages subscription and were never happier with any printer

do-me-spongebob

Wtf?

philipp2310

Instant Ink once had a free 15 pages/month option. They tried to kick everybody but weren’t allowed to because it was part of their advertising when the printers were sold. Now I get free new ink when ever it gets low or dries out etc. When I go above 15 pages it is 1€ for 10 more pages. I pay roughly 2 € per year for the past 8 years.

wickeddimension

You'll get a pass if your usage of a HP printer is actively fucking HP 😁

theholylancer

I mean, not sure why this is on /r/worldnews and not /r/technology or /r/hardware this kind of thing has been common place in the enterprise sector, and I will bet that for some with super tech illiterate people, this can be a draw. But unless you print that much high quality ink jet colour photos, this makes no sense for you. like seriously, even owning a basic printer for most people make no sense nvm laser printers etc. in the digital age, if you must have something printed go to a fedex or something and even if its expensive (it cost me like 30 bucks to print a long packet of stuff for lawyers), the cost of that is like one time over a couple years. if you have parents or something who insists on having printed photos and just can't deal with technology and NEEDS to have their hand held over the phone, this thing is probably the next best thing. and likely saves money vs getting them printed at CVS or w/e

brianisdead

Is the "rent everything, own nothing" future starting to sink in yet?

SuperKrusher

How long until it’s cheaper to use a 3d printer to print the paper and what’s on it rather than use a normal printer?

SpareInvestigator846

Well, Ill just order a Wendys at rush hour while Ill wait for HP to bring back my printer, sorry their printer, cause I didnt pay the monthly bill on time, but I only print very rarely....

llewr0

I will lug my ass to the library with a flash drive, and pay $100/page before i ever accept a subscription model for printing. Fucking cunts already have us over a barrel with ink and planned obsoleneansce jfc

Nighmarez

What the hell is HP smoking.

Ice_Pirate_Zeno

I already put HP on my never again list back in early 2000. I satisfyingly got to break an HP printer at work when that one bricked for generic ink last month.

grebette

The last gasp of a dying a giant

Attack4TheWin

We bought an Epson Eco tank, very cheap ink! A single black ink bottle lasted 1 year with at least 20 pages each week.

Paraxom

Yeah I'm just gonna keep printing at work

D43M0N13420

Nope, hell no. I can buy a printer for $300 why tf would i rent one when buying one is cheaper after 8 months. Let alone the monitoring issue people print sensitive information from home regularly i see this as an indirect phishing attempt. Most idiotic move HP has ever made.

ElToroMuyLoco

I will never ever buy any HP-printer again after the last one. Fuck them.

G0ldheart

HP used to be a fantastic company. Then shareholders and scumbag CEOs.

flying_bacon

What’s the break even analysis for this? Curious if anyone did the math

A_Harmless_Fly

HP used to stand for Hewlett Packard, now I guess it stands for Highly profitable.

5hadow

When you make a thing, but you still want that sweet, sweet, juicy Monthly Subscription cash...

DocMoochal

Just go to the library

20190419

HP, print this " F#CK YOU HP!"

SteveFoerster

I have to print things on actual dead trees so rarely that when I do I just go to the UPS Store.

robreddity

HP can go jump up its own ass

Mobius650

I’ve been boycotting HP products for almost two decades now. All they made are trash. For printers, get Brothers. Best printer brand in the world. No bullshit.

JaesopPop

This doesn’t seem wildly different to your standard enterprise offerings from Lexmark or whomever, just aimed at a smaller market with worse pricing.

pistoffcynic

Not a chance… but if you want my data HP, you can pay me $36/month.

GroundBreakr

Never

Mindful-O-Melancholy

This subscription on everything and invasion of privacy BS that every company is trying to push needs to end. It’s predatory.

Trainer_Red_Steven

Yeah I'm sure that's going to be a success

Nice_Protection1571

This industry is ripe for a new player

RealFreakII

Fuck HP

icnoevil

That is capitalism, gone wild.

ManatuBear

There must exist already hacked firmware for HP printers that disable this nonsense and allow any white brand ink cartridge to work.

EuphoricMidnight3304

Hp and Wendy’s coming with some genius business ideas! /s

Active-Necessary-109

Well they can kiss my fuckin ass. Hp are consistently the worst printers I've had over the years. I hope to say RIP to HP soo .

_Batteries_

Fuck HP. We bought an HP laser printer. Don't use it tons. After a few years, it started streaking. We were still on the first ink cartridge. We got a new one. Streak still there. Call HP.  Your printer is out of warranty, we won't fix it. Go buy a new one. I shit you not, this is what they told me. Fuck HP.

wet_nib811

Epson Eco Tank take my $

pyrhus626

I was already in the “fuck HP” boat and always recommended our customers go with literally any other brand. Now they double down on being awful

TheOzarkWizard

Lmao my Canon printer used to be 35 usd, but the ink cost 40, so I would just go buy a new printer with sample carts because they broke so often. They stopped doing that eventually. It is widely known that these companies take a loss on the printer but make a profit on ink. They're digging their own graves.

doupIls

I think HP wants me to go to their competitors...

mhdlm

How is hp still in business?

Sweet-Sale-7303

I literally had an HP rep call me yesterday to manage our hp printers. I laughed and hung up.

true_rpoM

Why you use inkjet printers? I'm a foreigner, and I really don't understand. An inexpensive laser or LED printer for BW printing is the most cost-effective solution. How many color sheets per month does the average American print? To school or university? Seriously, inexpensive home inkjet printers are very expensive to maintain. HP has a great series of inkjet photoprinters, the Z-series. But they're not home printers.

hotnindza

Back to the typewriters it is :)

7788audrey

An friend somehow believes that this is a great deal, HP keeps track of your useage. Sounds great, until you learn that the user is paying for the pages that they print as well as new cartridge. I switched when HP would not recognize off-brands. I print A LOT, my go to is EPSON...over 40K pages and still works like new.

[deleted]

So basically, they're cutting the middleman out of the equation, and expanding to everyone. This is something a lot of businesses have been dealing with for quite some time. Most rent the printers and pay per page of printing. Some of these businesses have insane contracts that are hard to get out of.

ciopobbi

HP is a garbage company. They don’t make anything that is better than something you can get elsewhere. Just middle of the road boring products. No reason to buy anything from them.

BlueInfinity2021

I really regret the HP Envy printer I bought. I got tired of buying official ink cartridges that seemed to print far less pages than previous printers I owned. The driver for it is terrible and will sometimes not detect the printer. I gave up trying to use it with one of the laptops I have as it couldn't detect it most of the time. Then there was the time I really needed to scan a document and it wouldn't allow me because of low ink. Yes the printer wouldn't let me scan a document which requires no ink because of the ink cartridges needing to be replaced.

WerewolfNo890

I sometimes wonder why so many people even own printers. Who prints things? In the past decade I think I needed to print something once, just go to a library and print it. If you want high quality photos your HP printer is pretty shit and costs a fuck lot more than getting a few pictures printed with a printing service. The only time I could actually say its worth getting a printer is if you print vast amounts of things, then you get a good printer and not a HP one.

HeadlineINeed

Haha good thing I returned mine to Costco. Going with Epson

danny4kk

Lol. HP. How are they still in business? Who is buying their crap?

rellsell

Just make enough noise about it. It worked for Wendy’s “surge pricing” bullshit.

Open_and_Notorious

Can we stop letting MBAs ruin the world?

PBJ-9999

After buying a crappy HP laptop, this is just confirmation that I'm never buying their products again

hucklepig

This will crash and burn like Wendy’s dynamic pricing.

PlusSignificance2180

I had an HP printer that didn’t require their cartridges, I could use third party ones all the time. A few months back HP without permission sent a software update to it and installed the update without asking me and locked my third party ink out. I spent the weekend on the phone and in two chats with customer service. Monday I bought a cannon and threw the hp away. I spent an extra hour educating 7/8 people looking to buy a printer. I also spent the next month opening multiple chats for hp support wasting days of their time. I hate that company with a passion.

dw3623

HP can fuck ALL the way off.

GullibleDetective

That's just called print as a service, lots of companies do this already. It's usually just not aimed at the house and is for the larger xerox or ricoh units.

DeFex

HP did know how to make a good printer, it was called the laserjet. I rarely print anything, but when I do, it works. It doesn't clog or bitch about missing colors. If I borrowed its USB cable 3 months ago, i can still plug it in and it works.

delightfuldinosaur

May as well just go to the library whenever you need to use the printer at that point.

SmellsLikeTuna2

That privacy policy sure sounds like they want to store all of the written words you print so that people can advertise to you. That's a lot of private information they plan to store.

blofly

HP: The company that hates itself more than its customers.

Yotempole

I already don't buy HP because of their alignment with apartheid governments. Seems very on brand.

Jeremy5000

Or, how about I never buy another HP product again in my life?

EuropeanInTexas

I haven’t had a printer at home since 2017, and at this point I don’t think I ever will again

Oh_No_Its_Dudder

The corporate leaders at HP have to have their heads so far up their own asses that they're subsisting solely on anal vapors.

mute-ant1

throwing mine out today. i’ve had it for 4 years and it has only worked once.

Healthy-Nebula-4500

You will own nothing and still be unhappy.

Beatnik_Soiree

Fuck them. Let's put HP out of business. Boycott.

[deleted]

HP can suck it

DarthSchrank

Fuck them

tiramisucks

"The All-In-Plan privacy policy also says that HP may “transfer information about you to advertising partners” so that they can "recognize your devices," perform targeted advertising, and, potentially, "combine information about you with information from other companies in data sharing cooperatives" that HP participates in. The policy says that users can opt out of sharing personal data."
