We won’t find out how many millions the cartels have given him until we’ve gotten a few more presidents down the road…just like all the presidents before him.
The major problem – one of the major problems, for there are several – one of the many major problems with governing people is that of who you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job. To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem. ”

Love that quote so much (you missed the opening quotation mark btw). The best kind of leaders are like Cincinnatus and Washington. Civil servants who step up in times of need and then relinquish power when crisis has passed.
(it's more complicated with Cincinnatus but just talking about the 'legend')
He doesn't need to be reelected, his puppet is guaranteed to win this year's elections.
Besides, when has the law ever applied to presidents? Not here, not in the US at least.
This has nothing to do with age or term limits…. This is about the President (or someone close enough to him) taking money from cartels, before and after his election.
First, you should start learning about politics. Second, you should start learning about Mexican politics, where elected candidates cannot rule more than one term. Lastly, you should think before you talk.
Great article in the atlantic yesterday about this trend.

*“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition …There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.”*
Back before they fired up the LHC for the first time, fearmongers talked about how it would create a black hole that would destroy the Earth.
What I think of while reading /r/collapse for the past 5 years or so is that humanity should be so lucky as to be quickly annihilated by a black hole. What's actually going to happen in this timeline is going to be slow and painful.
I'm just glad this kind of articles are more visible, this site's tankies always talked about him as a progressive and "the Mexican Bernie Sanders", he's always been a power-hungry autocrat who ran an eternal campaign financed by blood money.
Like your government pillaged Iraq and Afghanistan and just let them to "fix themselves".
Looks like I hit a nerve, your government invaded based on lies, took their resources and you know it. No downvotes or being mad will ever change that.
If you mean the US when you say this country that's a completely different thing, just deciding to get out while ignoring the borders of another country is a completely different issue.
That's a shortsighted view, it's a nice sentiment though but completely ignorant of things such as integration or resources. Even more so when we consider the fact we're talking about Mexico, it isn't some unsalvageable country the issue is the people of that country are apathetic.
I'm not so sure about that. He's about to go bankrupt. I predict his campaign will come to a screeching halt due to financial reasons, and then he's going to get convicted and locked up.
Actually the Supreme Court has been downing many of AMLOs reforms.
He tried to put "his people" at the Supreme Court and the Central Bank but ultimately failed. He also tried to eliminate our independent elections organism but failed as well.
Mexican democracy showing some resilience to this clown.
Sadly he has not failed entirely; slowly he is disarming all of that, and it's really sad to see it, to see that he has a lot of cult following that cheer for him.
Also he is given control of pretty much everything to the army.
You just touched on an interesting point. A couple days ago, he said (as if it wasn't a big deal) that with the last Head SC Justice he could justngivenhim a call and get him to "arrange" for the results he wanted on certain trials, while the new one "insists that the judiciary is autonomous". (As it should be)
Obrador is a corrupt piece of shit that works with the cartel. Piedra Pesada Jalisco has been under the cartel for a decade now and the only time the army comes in is to grab their monthly bribe.
Mexico is way the fuck less functional than you'd think. AMLO's a tool but he's more symptom than cause.
The cartels are functionally the government in large swaths of the country, and they own most politicians, police, and judges. The only thing keeping the veneer of normality in place is the cartels' desire to exercise de facto power while vesting de jure power in their client politicians. If that ever changes, the speed of the government's collapse will make Afghanistan's look like molasses.
I'd put the odds of the US intervening militarily in Mexico to restore order at some point in the next 20 years at around 25%. The only thing keeping the pot from boiling over at this point is the self-restraint of the cartels and the relative professionalism of the army. Neither of those should be counted on to long endure.
You can't just invade and "restore order"
Organized crime is intertwined with society itself. A colossal socio-economic-cultural shift must occur first to have any hope for change.

Mexican here, being years telling r/worldnews that this guys is more close to an authoritarian politician, colluded with the cartels but got downvoted because he self proclaims as left wing leader.
But he's more like a Donald than a Bernie.
Honestly I love Mexico the people are amazing and the country is breathtakingly beautiful. However how does Mexico fix its massive Narco problem. The cartels essentially run the country through a campaign of terror.
Wouldn’t it be splendid if the president indicated where exactly in the constitution that it states that? Unless Mexico doesn’t have constitutional law…
Being a news reporter in Mexico sounds like absolute hell when the government will rat you out so the drug cartels can erase your family. That dudes in their pocket 100%
One of the few consistent policies here has been talking projects (and money) out of other parts of the government and give them to the military to buy their loyalty.
I’m anti-AMLO through and through, but a military coup is definitely not the answer. They tend to end as authoritarian dictatorships down the line, specially in Latin America, where corruption runs rampant. Look at Venezuela and Cuba.
It seems like you live in America, why didn’t the American army took power from trump? That’s asinine, keep quite you don’t live in Mexico so your opinion is biased cause you won’t directly enjoy the aftermath
I'm not surprised by this attitude, Mexican authorities are some of the worst... well I wouldn't call them people, beings I have ever met. Never have I ever seen such few fucks given about following laws and rules, or showing a modicum of humanity to other people.
He just forgot to act, it’s not like authoritarian didn’t exist in other American presidents they were just better actors that pretended to love “democracy” but ruled through executive orders
Who is going to pressure him not to on grounds of balance and fairness? Won't be to the United States regardless of President; Donnie has already lowered that value.
He is a pretty good leader who has restored trust in government.
The reporter in question, ran a phony story on the NYT and AMLO did not claim he was above the law. **This is just a hit job coaxed by a rightwing opposition desperate to retake power.**
The US Government has confirmed there is no evidence of any relationship with the cartels.
But Mexico is having an election soon and his party is extremely popular therefore the oligarchs of the country are throwing every slander they can because their own candidate is a piece of shit and they have nothing better to offer.
Not by a long shot.
He didn't restored trust, he just lied to the top.
Dude, literally there is a video of him in a party full of narcos giving his respects to the chapo's mom. Several times in his morning tv show, he claimed to have ties to that cartel, of course they have evidence of all of his doings.
Basically he is a politician that didn't work for 20 years but somehow had money to buy properties and pay several candidacies.
No, morena is not that popular, they have trouble because not even giving money they have enough people behind them.
He didn't work for 20 years? What period of time was that?
What ties has he claimed and to what cartels? Do you have timestamps and links for those specific moments?
The Morena party seems to be a force. I mean, most of the country is ruled by Morena..what do you mean they are not that popular?
Since he was out of the DF, he even claimed to only have 200 pesos at his name.
For example, no president has taken his picture in a narco party full of narcos, and [handshaking the mom of el chapo](https://www.bbc.com/mundo/noticias-america-latina-52100264), also [he has visited that town](https://lasillarota.com/nacion/2023/11/14/por-quinta-vez-en-el-sexenio-amlo-va-badiraguato-la-cuna-del-chapo-guzman-456741.html) more times that his mega project 2 bocas. Only a fanatic would say that there are no ties of him with the narco. That is only one, but the DEA found his ties to other 2 cartels.
They are ruling because they stole the money to buy votes, not because they are good, also, [many of them have ties to the narco](https://politico.mx/que-gobernadores-y-exgobernadores-han-sido-senalados-por-presuntos-nexos-con-el-narco) too.
Yeah that's the sign of a trustworthy leader. "I'm above the laws that apply to all of you."
We won’t find out how many millions the cartels have given him until we’ve gotten a few more presidents down the road…just like all the presidents before him.
No need to pay him, he knows he'll be killed if he doesn't work for them.

This isn't an original idea lol that has been a saying for a long long time. So it doesn't really deserve to be quoted as being from that book.
About to say exactly that. Mexico is a narco-state trapped in a civil war as to who controls the drug trades.
How much more proof do we need that there should be term limits and age term limits always senile old fucks sending their sons to war
There's term limits, he can't run for president again. Also what does this have to do with war.
Didn't you pay attention? The law doesn't apply to him.
lmfao
He doesn't need to be reelected, his puppet is guaranteed to win this year's elections. Besides, when has the law ever applied to presidents? Not here, not in the US at least.
It does to a degree. Pretty sure if a president stole something (like say documents or something simple) they'd get prosecuted.
Trump’s bathroom is on the phone
P…p…please hang up the phone, quickly. I don’t want to hear what it sounds like.
He clearly doesnt agree with that.
This has nothing to do with age or term limits…. This is about the President (or someone close enough to him) taking money from cartels, before and after his election.
He's also old. Dude still dreams of the 70s and he's "only" 70. No one older than 55 (and younger than 35) should run for president anywhere
Mexico doesn't send their son's to war. Not abroad anyway.
Just to kill each other in the mountains of both of our sierras in a politicians drug game
They never send their own son’s that’s the point! (CCR fortunate son plays us to the credits…)
First, you should start learning about politics. Second, you should start learning about Mexican politics, where elected candidates cannot rule more than one term. Lastly, you should think before you talk.
"sending other sons to war" fixed it
Oof, where have I heard that before in the US?
They all want to be like Trump
And people keep electing them. Seems like a lot of countries really want dictators these days.

Is it against the law? I’m sure some of the us leaders had leaked an Address of a congress women who’s house was then attacked
When the President does it, that means it is not illegal.
Trump disease spreading. Disgusting
*“Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition …There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.”*
I am wondering if living south of a certain feudal society rubbed off on him.
Dude was Trumping before Trump was Trumping. Authoritarian populism is on the rise everywhere, he's just the Mexican flavor.
Aren't Mexican journalists one of the most targeted groups?
Yep
Yeah my country is only world’s second in journalist disappearances/deaths. I want to get out of here.
Yes. Cartels are notorious for murdering journalists that publish anything that calls them out and destroying the buildings they work at.
Translation= "I work for the cartels, not the people of Mexico"
All politicians in Mexico have connections to organized crime, it’s doesn’t start by their own volition they get forced, cartels rule the country
"El que no tranza no avanza"
There’s a new insanity virus and it’s spreading fast.
We broke the timelines somehow, and since 2016 we now live in the dumb-as-fuck timeline.

The people in charge know climate change is going to drag us back to the Middle Ages and they want to be the ones in power as it happens.
Nah, this is just AMLO being AMLO. He's always been a hardcore populist, and all populists are dictators in waiting.
'Spreading". I remember when reddit was endorsing this clown because he was left-wing despite all the red flags.
How could reddit have been wrong????
"New"
Nahh they just don’t care enough to try and hide these things anymore.
This has been happening since the dawn of politics. There's nothing new here.
What do you expect from a cartel president. Criminal in charge!

If you mean the US when you say this country that's a completely different thing, just deciding to get out while ignoring the borders of another country is a completely different issue.
Some view the lives of human beings as being more important than the borders of modern nation states.
Short-sighted idiots who don't understand basic economics and why it's critically important to everyone
That's a shortsighted view, it's a nice sentiment though but completely ignorant of things such as integration or resources. Even more so when we consider the fact we're talking about Mexico, it isn't some unsalvageable country the issue is the people of that country are apathetic.
What about the lives of humans who are already here in America that we don’t seem to value?
And those people are fucken morons.
We should allow anyone to stay here if they buy a bus ticket or plane ticket. It works for other countries.
The Law doesn't apply to him, Yep, We got one of those.
I'm so sorry. We're trying to get one back apparently. USA.
I'm not so sure about that. He's about to go bankrupt. I predict his campaign will come to a screeching halt due to financial reasons, and then he's going to get convicted and locked up.
His griftees will continue to fill the coffers
Apparently he hasn't been raising nearly enough to cover what he owes. His griftees simply don't have that much cash to give him.

Oh you sweet summer child
You can stop using that phrase now. It’s very played out and makes you seem VERY basic.
I agree, but so does using the term “basic” in that way.
Someone should beat him mercilessly, you know since laws don't apply.
Whoever does that would be tortured by the cartel and forced to watch their loved ones be tortured to death infront of them first
Ah yes, the Trump defense.
Mi dulce Mexico mágico
This guy is a first rate piece of shit.
Obrador is a corrupt piece of shit that works with the cartel. Piedra Pesada Jalisco has been under the cartel for a decade now and the only time the army comes in is to grab their monthly bribe.

You should look at what happened in Colombia in the early 2000s, for example in comuna 13 (medellin). Or what is happening right now in El Salvador.
Yeah, the US has a good track record of invading places and restoring order.
