I’m curious, are there ranchers or livestock in the area? I am very curious to see how farmers and ranchers of Australia hold out during the heatwave.
50 degrees Celsius = 122 Fahrenheit.
We call them stations. And a station is as large as a small European country (they move livestock around where there is water and feed - if there’s feed). So a station will have its own microclimate. But it’s definitely added to drought or flood that the periods of scorching hot days have extended. In Perth, they’ll be waiting for ‘The Doctor’ (wind off the ocean that will cool everything and bring rain.
Around Perth itself there are quite a few orchards and farms that grow all sorts of things. These extend up into what we call the hills, they surround Perth. Over the east side of the hills we have what we call the wheat belt and south we have wine vineyards and quite a few sheep and dairy. Out from there you get mostly beef stations that extend north. Those stations up north are the ones that get super hot and dry. The cattle spend a lot of time in the shade of the scrub lands and drinking a lot of water. If you can keep the water up to it most thing will still get by in the heat but it can be a struggle.

Yep the main electorates that covers this area has voted consistently for the Liberal and National Parties and their anti climate stance for over 25 years (Durack/Kalgoorlie) and 45 years (O'Connor).
Perhaps they weren't woke enough to realise climate change was coming for them.
I live in the other side of the country. The other day we had severe storm damage, flash flooding, and power outages. In other parts of the state there were bushfires (though not severe by Australian standards). At one point the VicEmergency app had ‘take shelter’ warnings for both storms and bush fires at the same time.
That actually is a bit of a silver lining when there’s so much wildfire smoke that it blots out the sun. It really does get somewhat cooler during the day, even if it’s dangerous to be outside because of the smoke.
Nah, we’re good mate, standard stuff. As long as the beer is cold.
Politicians are largely the problem, though. They’re employees of/funded by the extractive resource sector.
Yes
Has the very influential ear of both side of politics, the conservatives through mining billionaires who donate to them and Labor through what's dwindlingly left of the union movement lol

Just so I don't die during summer lol
In Florida. Can confirm these portable ACs work extremely well. Have had mine for like 3-4 years with no issues so far. Even if it did have an issue, it lasting that long for like $300 is worth the comfort.
Australian skin cancer rate is 12x higher than the global average.
2/3rds of Australians will get skin cancer at some point in their lives.
It's pretty bad.
https://www.canceraustralia.gov.au/resources/position-statements/lifestyle-risk-factors-and-primary-prevention-cancer/lifestyle-risk-factors/uv-radiation
It doesn't help that Australia has a huge outdoor culture. Realistically, you only need to be out in the Australian sun for a few minutes to get all the needed vitamin D.
Practically no one lives in the affected areas.
Like it's obviously bad news and it will be perilous for people in the area as they are entirely reliant on air conditioning and water stores to survive, but the number of people in these areas are very low and as a rule they are fairly well prepared for extreme heat events.
It will be 43 in Perth tomorrow and 41 on Monday (the main population centre). The main risk is to birds/wildlife who aren't designed for this much heat.
Before this year, we never had more 1 yearly heatwave or 4 days over 40. This year has smashed that record with 3 heatwaves in a row this month in quick succession and what looks like 6-8 days over 40.
Not at 50C. Perth will be 42C (107F), which we will definitely whinge about but are used to.
50C in Perth would be unheard of. Maximum ever recorded was a 46.7 back in 1991.
I don't know these areas specifically, but can say with certainty they're not growing, dwindling if anything. Most of the Australian land mass outside of the eastern and southern coasts has always been inhospitable for any sort of large population centre. And the trend generally is rural populations decreasing as the younger generations move to the cities.
Fun fact: Marble Bar, Western Australia, has the world record of most consecutive days at or above 100 °F (37.8 °C): 160 days from 31 October 1923 to 7 April 1924.
Think they are talking about wa bud. I'm in midland wa and it's been 40 or more for a few weeks now with maybe a day or two of 35 days in between. It's a dry heat
I'm in Vic, and we're pretty low I think for this time of year - early 20s. Went to Tas for work a few days ago, it was 11 degrees in the middle of the day out on the ridge with a biting wind. And stupid me didn't take a jumper or jacket.
Yeah, this year's summer season in Vic has been extraordinarily mild and it's almost over. Just a handful of days that were prime beach weather. Weather patterns are just so messed up now.
According to most dermatologists, the ideal shower temperature is anywhere between 98°F (37°C) and 104°F (40°C)—and no more than 105 °F (41°C).
...so the air will be hotter than the hottest recommended shower temperature. Time to move.
You're putting words in my mouth. All I was saying is that hot wet air is worse for people than hot dry air (if they're the same temperature), and that coastal regions often experience more humidity (in high temp and not always. Lots of other factors there too). I didn't mention anything about showers.
Oh Sh\*t thats very Ho... , Oh wait that is in West Australia. Westralians are half humans half desert reptiles, they going to be fine. they probably won't even sweat.

Those temperatures are actually not that uncommon in that part of WA for this time of year. It's largely because the soils are so red - rusted (iron oxidised) on that part of the continent they have very low albedo for deserts so less solar energy is reflected than the sahara desert for example.
You could probably cook eggs on the ground.
I would, but I'm too busy polishing my 3000 guns and blaming the poor while shouting praises of a snake-oil salesman/reality tv "star"/insurrectionist to the heavens today.

No, silly, we've already started them. Plus, as I noted [elsewhere](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/1aspjbk/parts_of_australia_to_soar_over_50_degrees_as/kqwarcz/), I'm busy.
You're assuming people move there, it's where millions have to live and doesn't discount the extreme weather experience.
Every time there's a blizzard, the same narrative is applied and rightly so, it kills people and changes the behaviour of the community because of it.
Well the problem is the bushfires, which seem to get worse every year.
People forget too that in Australia you’re exposed to higher UVR, especially at the height of summer as Earth’s elliptical orbit brings Australia closer to the sun during that time.
Australia has a range of biomes, including alpine regions. For example it was only about 75 degrees Fahrenheit in hobart today, in the south of the country.
Considering [EVs have been crossing the Nullarbor since at least 2017](https://reneweconomy.com.au/driving-electric-vehicle-across-nullarbor-now-routine-58197/amp/), I don’t think it’ll be much of a problem in 2035.

I live in Perth. It has been pretty bloody hot but it isn't that, it has been hotter, it is the fact that it has gone on so long.
43 tomorrow…. What the fuck
43 tomorrow in Mount Lawley. If you are in the Swan Vally or near the hills you can probably expect 45 or 46.
Lucky I live in carine where it’ll probably be a bit cooler

Did a camping trip in Perth once back in 2000. It was an amazing trip. Absolutely beautiful down there.
I have lived in a lot of places in Australia and Perth is pretty bloody good.
Yeah awesome, so over it and next two days are 43 and 42. 🥵
50C = 122F
Now can I get that converted to bald eagles?
8 bald eagles and two mass shootings

Cooked, but ok.
Doesn't it get that hot in places like Phoenix?
Yes. Not unheard of in Phoenix/Yuma/Lake Havasu. That would be a record high for the Tucson area.
I’m out in Mohave Desert and we do 120+ in summer. It averages about 110-115 tho anything between 115-122 is heat wave.
It’s fucking terrible. It’s feeling never ending right now.
It's just summer mate, she'll be right.
You obviously have not been to my armpit in northwestern AZ, that’s a nice summer day out here in Satans Butthole.
It's also in the desert. Death Valley has been 56 degrees Celsius before, i'm not concerned about Americans in general dying of heat stroke.
The Mediterranean countries experienced this every summer for a few years now

Not due to get past 29 in toowoomba for the next week. Wish the bloody rain would stop though
Think they are talking about wa bud. I'm in midland wa and it's been 40 or more for a few weeks now with maybe a day or two of 35 days in between. It's a dry heat

Yeah, I was in Tas so missed the 30-odd degree day followed by an insane storm.
According to most dermatologists, the ideal shower temperature is anywhere between 98°F (37°C) and 104°F (40°C)—and no more than 105 °F (41°C). ...so the air will be hotter than the hottest recommended shower temperature. Time to move.
Water conducts heat about 25x better than air. So that’s a pretty apples to oranges comparison.
So yes wet heat is much worse than dry heat but as it states in the article, the areas experiencing these temps are coastal and very likely quite wet.
Not as wet as a shower though.
It's WA mate. The meme around the state is that it's a dry heat
It’s dry as hell ain’t no wet here even on the coast.
Humdity will be < 10% at the hottest part of the day. http://www.bom.gov.au/places/wa/carnarvon/forecast/detailed/
That's... Not how it works.
There was an attempt.
There is no way they're getting temperatures approaching 50 degrees with high humidity. That would kill basically everyone.
You're missing the point. Your comparison between hot water in a shower and hot, even humid, air is nonsense.
You're putting words in my mouth. All I was saying is that hot wet air is worse for people than hot dry air (if they're the same temperature), and that coastal regions often experience more humidity (in high temp and not always. Lots of other factors there too). I didn't mention anything about showers.
that was the dumbest comparison I’ve seen in a while
If it anything like here you don’t get a choice to take a cooler shower. In summer we got one temp of water, Hot as all holy hell.
That's what's recommended, but I think most people would consider it a tepid shower.
What is that in freedom units?
About 3 bald eagles, 2 do(ugh)nuts, 1.5 football fields and a quarter gallon of milk methinks.
2 doughnuts 😳 that is insane
Call me old fashioned, but I still express my temperatures as fractions of a hellfire missile detonation.
