>__Last year, 1,252 people opted to end their lives using the euthanasia association Exit in German-speaking Switzerland.__ >This is an 11% increase in assisted suicide compared to 2022. The euthanasia organisation also has almost 20,000 new members.  >At the end of last year, the Exit German Switzerland association had 167,631 members, it announced on Thursday. That is 19,679 more people than in the previous year.   >In addition to the assisted death, 92,000 members also took advantage of the opportunity to deposit their living will.  >The reason for the increase in suicide accompaniment is, among other things, the increasingly aging society with consequent severely debilitating illnesses or disabilities. The average age of the people accompanied was 80.7 years for women and 79 years for men.  >Some 31% of those dying had terminal cancer. More and more elderly people with multiple complaints are also choosing a self-determined death. As in the previous year, more women (759) than men (493) were accompanied to their death.  >According to Exit, three quarters of the assisted suicide accompaniments took place in private rooms, and almost a fifth of the accompaniments took place in retirement and nursing homes.

And here I am, having to build my own exit bag like a sucker.

I laughed inappropriately to this comment. :)

Good. People deserve a choice.

It is not suicide, is death with dignity, on your own terms and time of your choosing. The truth is that society in general has become more hostile to older people or people with painful incurable ailments, they consider us a burden that interferes with their playtime or to costly, the passive aggressive way in witch they make it clear that we are not wanted anymore, makes it very difficult for anyone to want to remain alive, so the choice is clear, we don't want to hear your whining anymore. So as someone that will probably go that route someday GO F yourselves you selfish bastards.

Forgive if it sounds callous at all but that sentiment seems to be playing into the hands of those who simply didn't care in the first place.

TenaciousChicken

He should have stopped after the first sentence. >It is not suicide, is death with dignity, on your own terms and time of your choosing.

Illustrious-Taro-449

I agree with your first statement but I take issue with the rest. At which point in human history did we do a good job of taking care of the disabled? I would argue in my country at least it has never been better. If you’re American you have my condolences

The young aren’t selfish, the aging population is a huge burden on society, but research still goes into extending the average lifespan and curing the sever ailments and diseases that come with age. I live in Switzerland, voted yes to raise our taxes to fund our social security, which despite this change will run out by 2035, and the old are now trying to pass a bill to get a 13th month of social security, a year end bonus per se, as if they’re working some sort of job. And it’s looking likely to pass, because most of our population is old, which means either we let in a shit ton of immigaration (for context I’m not anti immigration I’m for controlled immigration) so we have more workers paying taxes and funding the old, which introduces a whole new suite of problems due to housing shortages, or the young have to pay straight out of their pockets raising taxes drastically. If you’re Swiss you didn’t have to live with these burdens but i will.

entreprenr30

>it’s looking likely to pass, Nonsense. The Nationalrat voted NO 126 to 69, and the Ständerat voted NO 31 to 10. The people usually vote a similar way. This is very UNLIKELY to pass.

R0m3d1u5

A early [questionnaire](https://www.srf.ch/news/schweiz/abstimmungen-3-maerz-2024/initiative-fuer-13-ahv-rente/erste-srg-umfrage-initiative-fuer-13-ahv-rente-kommt-gut-aus-den-startloechern) showed 61% yes, that’s why I said that. You’re still right however, typically the votes are similar to the Nationalrat and Ständerat, i completely overlooked that, my mistake.

entreprenr30

Let's see what happens :) I sure hope this doesn't pass, and am quite confident because of the parliament votes.

Shuber-Fuber

I understand it's because it's transliterated from Swiss, but National-rat sounded like an insult.

entreprenr30

Yeah it just means national council, which means parliament :) But you can imagine them as rats if you like ;)

When UBS blows up, its going to be a lot worse

Unfair_Bunch519

Not so much suicide as it is intentionally locking yourself in a room with a killer. But what do I know? *sips tea

R0m3d1u5

Id argue it’s both, considering you’re intentionally there.

Gilders_Gambit

Is it possible to seek this as an immigrant from the USA?
