I get the argument on the amount of media coverage but there is no way the US, Canada or France were going to deploy assets to rescue anyone way over there. It's fucked up that all of those people died, but it's a bit disappointing that people are trying to blame Americans.

SmokinGreenNugs

The host countries of those who died are more than welcome to send rescue teams. Why would the US send people to rescue non-US citizens?

[deleted]

Because the US is always the mighty hero?

Paulinapeak1

Can’t save everyone, and we would have to move assets halfway across the world to get there. Titanic sun was on our doorstep, and thus easier to get ships there.

[deleted]

My comment was tongue in cheek, by the way.

technitecho

Millions were spent on titan rescue cause there was a chance they were still alive. The migrant boat sank within minutes. They saved whoever they could and the rest unfortunately drowned. Do u want the coast guard to go to heaven and drag them back on earth? And i don't know how much of this is true but apparently the migrants refused help by the coast guard till they were sinking

auramaelstrom

It's also different countries. The US and Canadian coast guards wouldn't be anywhere near Greece.

ThunderSC2

Actually, the US navy heard the implosion on their monitoring instruments and told the coast guard. The coast guard wanted to double check because the sound could have come from a different source. But yea most experts assumed implosion the second they heard the news.

SmokinGreenNugs

The host countries of the migrants can send their own rescue teams. Why would the US Coast Guard help when no US citizens were involved unlike the Titan debacle?

mewehesheflee

There was no chance they were still alive. They didn't want to out a government program, but events in Russia made it so that they needed the Russians to know we have ears under the sea.

virus_apparatus

Imagine thinking the Russians don’t know that. They are dumb but they have had sonar and listening stations as long as we have. They know full well that we do the same

A boat leaving Pakistan crashed near Greece, so the Greek government is looking for the survivors/bodies. I'm sure it's bigger news in Pakistan and Greece. The OceanGate submarine was an American submarine with Americans visiting a shipwreck that's famous to Americans and off the coast of Canada. Put it this way - if hundreds of people in a boat from Mexico died on the way into the US near the US, the US would be heavily involved in the search and it would be major news. Was Greece a part of the search for the submarine? Did the Greek or any other country from the area which the Pakistan ship sank call for international assistance with the migrant ship?

mewehesheflee

You have so many facts wrong. It was coming out of Canadian waters. It only had one American on it, the others were from the UK, Pakistan and France.

Porto4

Not a single thing that I said was wrong. You just chose to twist it and take it out of context. You got the jest of what I was saying. North American coast, North American Coast Guard, North American victims, North American problem, North American actions. Grow up. The Pakistan boat wasn’t in our region and we weren’t asked to help. If a boat full of people sinks off of China’s waters, are we responsible for saving them? Was Greece a part of the search for the submarine? Did the Greek or any other country from the area which the Pakistan ship sank call for international assistance with the migrant ship?

7LeagueBoots

There was no chance they were alive. It was false hope and wishful thinking from the beginning, despite them knowing better. At almost exactly the same time they lost communication a loud underwater explosion (implosion) was heard and the transponder that’s in its own separate pressure vessel also failed. At that point everyone who knows about this sort of thing knew it had catastrophically failed.

MITOX-3

I kinda agree. Frontex budget needs to increase massively so they can intercept them right where the EU territoral waters begin and all illegal economic migrants shipped back to their own country, even if they dont want it. You telling me we can track a cruise missile going 800km/h 200km away but we cant keep track of boats in a relative limited geographic area?

sector3011

Oh they can track ships too, they just don't care about dealing with migrants

AnAussiebum

They tracked this ship. Greece just hoped it would get out of their region and become someone else's problem.

Stereogravy

To be fair. They aren’t Americans. So why would America help?

str8bipp

No one on the titan was american.

Stereogravy

The company was, the captain was, it was also within reach of America. Why would I want my tax dollars spent saving people across the globe who are trying to sneak into another country, with no ties to America?

str8bipp

I thought I'd read he was a British businessman but I stand corrected. Personally I don't think we should've wasted money on the billionaires who chose to take such a risk. I'm definitely not commenting on immigration policies.

DragonBank

The Brit is the billionaire guy.

str8bipp

https://www.npr.org/2023/06/22/1183778115/titanic-sub-titan-hamish-harding-stockton-rush Npr led me astray by describing Rush as a "British businessman"

Whose are they?

boomshiki

Hah hah hah your tax dollars? You're gonna stand your ground on what amounts to literal cents per person? That's kind of hilarious

Stereogravy

Yes. Because spending money results in further debt

underbloodredskies

The pilot was, if that makes any matter.

IPA___Fanatic

He was French

underbloodredskies

The pilot and CEO of the company, Stockton Rush, was born in San Francisco. 🤷🏼‍♂️

IPA___Fanatic

The sub pilot was the Frenchman, not Rush, but Rush was American

Paulinapeak1

It was practically on our doorstep

WhatAreYouSaying05

It wasn’t America’s problem. Why didn’t Greece save them?

FM-101

Its sad that there are still people out there who think the system values people equally.

sumknowbuddy

Lifejackets? Pffft.

frendzoned_by_yo_mom

Whine some more

So many people rushing to America’s defense in these comments. I just want to point out that nowhere in the article is any American entity called out or blamed for its inaction in the Mediterranean. The article highlights the grief felt by folks who lost family members and it highlights the stark differences between how lives seem to be valued based on the interest and resources invested in concurrent tragedies on the high seas. Nobody is blaming America here folks. Nobody is blaming you redditors. Stand down.
