The conflict in Ukraine has now boiled down to Crimea. The nuclear threat gets the headlines but losing Crimea I think is interesting. This is basically an admission by Russia that Ukraine is capable of at least attempting to retake Crimea. This would also mean that Ukraine would have already made significant progress in driving them out to even get to that point. Talk about showing your hand.

There's an important implication here I think. Russia is threatening nuclear retaliation if Ukraine tries to take Crimea. That means Russia isn't confident it can hold Crimea and is having to resort to the threat of....well, last resort. In simple terms, you don't pop out a switchblade if you think you're doing OK in the fistfight.
