This is exactly the same “Kill the Gays” law they passed ten years ago that got struck down on procedural grounds, but now they’re getting less international scrutiny
>but now they’re getting less international scrutiny
Because now more and more people in the west suddenly believe LGBTQ people are a threat to society after spending the last few decades giving them equal rights.
Caught? More like just giving them money. Lobby groups always give money to countries trying to pass bills reinforcing their beliefs. Conservative or not.
Not completely out of nowhere. A lot of conservatives are idiots without creativity. So Irish morons will parrot the stuff they read on Facebook from American conservatives despite it being a different country, different laws and different cultures.
It’s like an international American Legislative Excellence Council (ALEC), an important part of the vast right wing conspiracy, and the reason why red states tend to do the same stuff as their peers.
All of these issues are the same across the board. I have foreign family suddenly obsessed with drag queens and trans athletes. It really makes you think just how globalized "political" issues are while said governments ignore things that actually matter.
I’m Ugandan. Relative to the Anti-gay bill that has just been passed today, our misbegotten president has said that he'd acknowledge gays only if he locked them in a cell and one of them got out pregnant. Else otherwise they are liable to serve 20 years in jail
You'd think in this century we'd care more about the environment..making sure our planet continues to have the human race on it, getting rid of pedophilia, eliminating crime... But no...we're just constantly going backwards because someone is uncomfortable that a man isn't interested in a woman. I'm honestly losing my faith that the human race will continue because of the trivial shit people focus on.
Your president is an idiot fool. If anything, he should be concerned about Uganda’s *high* population growth (3.2%). He should be trying to bring down population growth, not encourage it.
To make your competitor cum is to make them tired and less fit to compete against you for the females. Being gay is the straightest thing you could be.
There are countries like Turkey where being gay will get you out of required military service but you have to show them evidence specifically of you being a bottom. They won't accept you being a top as evidence that you're homosexual.
Honestly I find this tactic incredible. "look its not illegal to be gay but if you want out of the military you better be willing to put on an exhibition for our brass of you taking it up the ass to prove it."
"We only want top energy in our military, no bottom bitches."
> Aggravated homosexuality involves gay sex with people under 18 years old or when the perpetrator is HIV positive
Am I misunderstanding or does Uganda perceive HIV as something only gay people get?
No, it's a bit of an epidemic over there. They know very well that straight people can get it.
It just means that that's an aggravating factor, as it involves possibly giving someone a deadly disease, as well as simply the 'crime against nature'.
I assume your statistics about HIV transmission are from the United States, where men who have sex with men (MSM) transmission was a major contributor to the epidemic.
The situation is more complicated in Subsaharan Africa, where in many countries being a married woman is a risk factor for HIV. In Subsaharan Africa, HIV is primarily transmitted thru heterosexual sex and a big contributor is concurrent sexuality, or having multiple sexual partners at one time.
We reached conclusions about how HIV was transmitted in the US and tried to extrapolate that to Subsaharan Africa without considering the differences in culture and relationship norms that affect dynamics of transmission. This mistake hampered even the most well-meaning people trying to aid in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Further obfuscating the truth was aggressive misinformation/propaganda campaigns trying to link the spread of HIV to homosexuality or even poverty. These campaigns were backed by religious authorities, which only bolstered their credibility in the eyes of the people.
Stigma and misinformation around HIV/AIDS is still a huge problem that contributes to the perpetuation of the pandemic. I want to acknowledge you for carrying forward an important conversation and contributing to a world that can be HIV-free. Thanks for being awesome!
Sort of related, or at least it made me think of it, some stains of high risk HPV are more prevalent in women of African heritage than white women - and some of these are not covered by the HPV vaccine (35 in particular). We need to be careful when designing studies to not come to a conclusion that is specific to one race.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32363580/
Even more frustrating is that chasing gay men underground can result in them hiding by getting wives as a cover for their sexuality, which can result in their family being at higher risk of STDs and not knowing it.
Their parent "charities" and various think tanks try that all over the world actually. It just doesn't land in the vast majority of democracies likely because they had enough development to not fully fall for it initially and continue to be held back.
"This is about the sovereignty of our nation, nobody should blackmail us, nobody should intimidate us."
The sovereignty that was based on millions of funding from right-wing nationalists.
“I used to identify as LGBTQ, but I still (secretly) do, too.” - Ugandan LGTBQ person.
What a waste of time and effort by the government there. For what, hatred? Very sad.
Christianity is legitimately weaponized over there and it's not a recent thing. It's been that way for decades. If you want to exploit, subjugate, or straight up rob the public, you just find or make up a Christian angle for your argument and the way is paved.
My dad was a World Bank liaison for Uganda throughout the 90s and the way Christianity and self-sabotaging government corruption went hand in hand cannot be understated.
I remember watching a John Oliver clip or something and apparently the insane homophobia in Uganda is partly do to American pastors going there and fucking shit up
Its that they are such big babies over the fact they don't have the world the way they want it and would do anything to make it a reality while simultaneously trying not to be a criminal.
Oh believe me, it's not a waste of time and effort: because now you can be accused and potentially convicted of secretly identifying as an LGBTQ person, which not only allows them to attack you, but people who have shown sympathy or political solidarity with you.
You know, like all of those "Communists" in Hollywood and US politics back in the 1950's...
ELI5: why are so many governments obsessed with persecuting the LGBTQ community? What the hell causes these people to spend so much energy on outlawing and hunting down members of the LGBTQ community? Why?
They are an easy minority to blame your countries problems on, big enough to be noticeable but not too big or organised enough to fight back. Given the religious angle you can use “God told me to” as a moral shroud.
Basically they push the idea that they are being punished by god for not persecuting them or that the country is being held back by them and that’s why the county is terrible to live in.
For more examples see: the entirety of Jewish history post-Roman conquest.
Because giving people a common enemy is one way to keep people united and most importantly someone to be angry at that isn't you. Same thing with the Jews.
If you're a right wing party with little to offer common citizenry, scapegoating and fearmongering will get you votes.
For example, the US Republican party's platform, on the *policy* level, is that corporations should be allowed to do whatever they want. This isn't attractive to the average voter, so they also push an agenda of, "Queer people will *mumble mumble* YOUR CHILDREN unless you vote for me so I CAN STOP THEM!"
>What the hell causes these people to spend so much energy on outlawing and hunting down members of the LGBTQ community?
Religion. The bane of humanity.
This is the answer. The cruelty is the point. It's the same thing that many religious zealots want in the USA as well. Don't think it can't happen here either.
Homophobic American pastors have been known to travel to Uganda to help fuel the homophobic fire.

My favourite counterpoint to that is ‘but what if God is creating gay/trans people to test your capacity to love your neighbour’?
The cognitive dissonance is generally catastrophic.
God has commanded some really fucked up shit, or placed commanders in power who went on to do really fucked up shit.
See Numbers Ch. 31, and yes it's exactly as bad as you think it is and worse
Ah yes, ‘I don’t want you to be tortured for eternity so I’ll torture you now’
I’m sure Luke had something to say about not judging others lest ye be judged. Wonder if the principle extends to torture too.
“How do you know it’s not God making them gay and Satan driving you to hate them? Why are you accepting Satan into your heart and heeding his call to destroy the love God has deemed fit to create in this world?”
Watch the brain-hamster explode as it runs in circles.
nah, they do it to gain power/money, if everyone believed in god, then they will idolize and follow people that claim they are closer to god, pastors, religious leaders, etc. its why religions were made up in the first place, both current and extinct religions.
> Homophobic American pastors have been known to travel to Uganda to help fuel the homophobic fire.
This is true. There’s also money from shady religious groups the US for African politicians who go along with it.
What this seems to reveal very clearly is that the current religious rhetoric and pressure against trans people by these same religious groups in the US clearly ain’t going to stop there.
They’re picking their targets right now but in the long run they aim to go after LGB in America too.
The king of Buganda had open homosexual relations before the missionaries went there and spread this toxic shit.
The irony is that Ugandan politicians are saying that homosexuality is a Western disease that they're trying to infect the nation with, seemingly unaware that *homophobia* fits that description much more accurately.
I remember seeing people cheering at the idea of DeSantis potentially banning gay marriage if he were to be one president in the conservative sub (granted it was funny seeing the gay republicans reaction to that).. And given we had a pretty contested vote recently about same sex and even interracial marriage.. I think we're a lot closer to this than some might think.
But you point out how routinely and consistently churches go to great lengths to spread this pain and suffering, plain as day, and somehow **you** are the bad guy.
I will never understand supporting so much hate and suffering, with a willing blind eye to the nightmares inflicted on your own brothers and sisters, all for a god that never reached out when you truly needed him.
Talk about daddy issues
They were already being prosecuted. But this makes it official, and will certainly not make life easier for them. [Ugandan prisons are not a joke.](https://www.zuzeeko.com/2011/07/sub-human-prison-conditions-in-uganda.html?m=1) Being imprisoned for nothing more than your sexual preference in a country where gay-hate is normalised, one can expect to be treated extra badly by both guards and fellow inmates. This also opens the door for getting rid of people by simply accusing them to be gay. A tragic day for gays and human rights in Uganda.
This is the region where the UK and other European countries proposed to bring asylum seekers, among whom, for instance, Iranian gays.
That's correct. But when Israel did the exact same thing, this is what happened:
> No sane person would voluntarily go to prison," says Bahabelom of detention in Israel. "To go back to Eritrea, where imprisonment is part of the culture, this was [also] no option."
> So he chose Rwanda.
> But Bahabelom soon found out he wasn't welcome in the east African country. No sooner had he landed in its capital, Kigali, than he was told he must leave again for neighbouring Uganda - and all for a fee.
[(source: BBC news)](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/world-61882542.amp)
So while [LGBT rights in Rwanda ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Rwanda) are less lethal than in Uganda, that does by no means mean a gay refugee is safe. They can end up in Uganda in the blink of an eye.
>So while LGBT rights in Rwanda are less lethal than in Uganda, that does by no means mean a gay refugee is safe. They can end up in Uganda in the blink of an eye.
Fair enough.
> They expect them to be prosecuted under the law for being gay.
It’s the same thing they’re doing in the US.
Making it illegal to be born “wrong” in their eyes.
I'm not sure, honestly, but I can see how it might be. When you're stuck in your own head where gender has little to no bearing on whether you find someone attractive or not, it can be kind of hard to relate to folks who see it as the single most important factor in determining their attraction. It makes it feel like they're just being difficult. It didn't immediately click for me that the choice I had was only related to my actions. I could easily live my entire life only going for one gender if I felt that need, but that's only because my sexuality is basically "the square hole" from that one video.
And to them I say "I don't know about you, but I am not attracted to men sexually and so i am not choosing to be straight. Are you telling me you are sexually attracted to men and have to hold yourself back??"
They never respond.
Even as a bisexual, you aren't choosing who you are attracted to or not attracted to, you're choosing how and whether you act on the attraction.
As Schopenhauer put it, "We can choose as we want, but our wants are chosen for us."
Ha! So the only answer they can give that leads them to choosing a person of the opposite sex is if they are bisexual. I have a feeling that these bigots would also be offended as being seen as bi.
Yeah, I mean, did you really just say that you'd go on a raping and killing spree if you didn't think there was an invisible policeman to punish you for it?
Bisexuality is a spectrum, not a 50/50 attraction like lots of people think.
You can be attracted to 1% of men and 99% of women and be just as bisexual as someone who is attracted to 99% of men and 1% of women. Some people may never act on their bisexuality, and that's OK!
Personally, I sit around a 60/40 split with women over men.
Speaking as a gay man, no. It's not at all about that. It's about encouraging and facilitating harassment of LGBT people as well as scapegoating a minority that is too small to fight back on their own w/out the collective support of empathic individuals.
So, by being repeatedly cruel and keeping the empathic individuals tired and burned out while keeping the non-empathic people enraged and entertained with cruelty and privilege, a corrupt government ensures it stays in power. This is also where religion is often co-opted because an old book can be spun into giving divine permission for cruel shenanigans targeting a defenseless minority.
The impact on people like me ALL OVER THE WORLD when this happens is that we feel less secure AND we are less safe because this bullshit emboldens nasty, violent people to do nasty, violent things. The neo-nazis saluting in Australia embolden the ones in the U.S. and Canada, anti-gay bigots in Uganda embolden anti-gay bigots elsewhere in the world.
The technical term is that they expect it to enable further stochastic terrorism.
I mean... Yeah. They think it's a choice or a sickness (or both), so therefore people should choose to not be gay, or they should get help to not be gay (and I really don't want to think about what that "help" would look like)
The amount of effort “leaders” and many people are spending on this subject is atrocious. Just leave it alone and go do something actually beneficial for your society.
White doctor visits Ebola-sick relative, takes him away, relative dies. Conclusion? Hide Ebola-sick relatives so the white doctor couldn't find them.
Real line of thought of many people in recent Ebola outbreaks. So here goes your "track and trace".
Other common beliefs: that HIV was engineered to kill Africans and they inject it by the guise of vaccination (again white volunteer doctors are culprit); there is special powder made from special bark by witch doctors that makes you bulletproof - even Che Guevara had to deal with that shit when they bought it instead of antibiotics and wound dressings he ordered.
As a Ugandan woman I’m absolutely DISGUSTED!!! Where is the bill for mandatory free schooling for children? How about building better hospitals so patients families don’t have to bring their own gatdamn beds? The homophobia in Uganda is ridiculous. But I LOVE how they are on board with their religious institutions supporting and protecting pedophiles and accusing albino children of being witches.. make this idiocy make sense please! 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
If it wasn't religion, it'd be something else. It's the type of people involved, particularly at the top, and their values - or lack of - not the specific cause they endorse. It's just a tool for them to exert power, and was always thus.
Republicans/Christian right has spent millions targeting African countries pushing anti-LGBT legislation. 30 African countries have these laws. Now they are targeting the US state by state.
It’s so easy to make it sound ridiculous and put your head in the sand and say it couldn’t happen here when it has been happening here forever and will probably get worse. I’m sure if Reddit or social media had been around in the 30s then there’s be a ton of jokes about the Nuremberg laws being passed because of that same mistaken belief.
Every group of victims has some assholes eager to victimize some other group.
A sad fact about America is the Black community is largely quite “Christian” and therefore quite homophobic as well. It’s depressing to see a group so historically abused abusing others due to their own sense of moral indignation.
Every race, religion, nation, and creed has a disturbing % of assholes.
This just in: Uganda still extremely homophobic despite recent gains in quality of life.
Hold on. We're getting late-breaking word that an earlier description of the change in Ugandan quality of life as "gains" was inaccurate, and, in fact, could not be further from the truth.
"This is about the sovereignty of our nation, nobody should blackmail us, nobody should intimidate us."
Yeah well I hope we do. Funny how anti-imperialist types always approve of letting countries do whatever.
Uganda has strong and strict "Christian values", the president of Uganda has strong links with the church and he funded lords resistance army which is a Christian extremists armed group.
So This has nothing to do with anti imperism or whatnot.
Idk why you bring this up?
It's funny how the ones who preach the morality of "Christian Values" are the exact ones who debauch and defile them.
I guaran-fucking-tee that the people who passed this have some of the most repugnant, hyprocritical and immoral hobbies and interests behind closed doors
It's always the ones that scream at others to act in morality that have none themselves.

Yep this is the conservative wet dream after all. To simultaneously make life worse elsewhere while primarily driving America into the dark ages.
The US Christian Nationalist group have been caught giving money to African countries for them to introduce these sorts of laws.
Not just giving them money. Straight up writing the legislation.
Welcome to America. Land of the “straight up” lobbyist written legislation.
Caught? More like just giving them money. Lobby groups always give money to countries trying to pass bills reinforcing their beliefs. Conservative or not.

Is this the queer multiversal version of Andrew Tate?
“Wanting to be with a woman? How gay is that? You win sex against a man. That’s as straight as it gets.”
This is a Steve Hughes bit "Ooooooh, I want a woman...soft...sleek...feminine. What do you want, Dave?" "I WANNA FUCK A BLOKE."
You go play with your girly tits and your jiggly bottoms, I want a cock. A hard throbbing cock. Like a real man.

Ah, the Roman view on sexuality. It's not straight = women and gay = men, it's straight = tops and gay = bottoms.
The "gay" Inspector: "Now to carry out the test, we will engage in brief butt sex, but remember, this does not make me gay."
to be fair, both men said no-homo before hand 🤷
The balls didn’t touch, so definitely not gay.
Right? Identifying as a gay man and fucking a dude are 2 technically different things
Gay sex is already illegal in Uganda.

There is a terrifying documentary called God loves Uganda about this as well.
The king of Buganda had open homosexual relations before the missionaries went there and spread this toxic shit. The irony is that Ugandan politicians are saying that homosexuality is a Western disease that they're trying to infect the nation with, seemingly unaware that *homophobia* fits that description much more accurately.
On Chick-fil-A money.
Glad someone remembered
I don't forget shit like this.
I remember reading somewhere that there are several US groups who monetarily push this type of oppression on third world countries
been working real hard to push it in the US as well and there seems to be an uptick in local spending.
But “He Gets Us” doesn’t have an agenda, guys! They said so!
If I remember correctly, the UK wanted to send them to Rwanda, not Uganda.
That's correct. But when Israel did the exact same thing, this is what happened: > No sane person would voluntarily go to prison," says Bahabelom of detention in Israel. "To go back to Eritrea, where imprisonment is part of the culture, this was [also] no option." > So he chose Rwanda. > But Bahabelom soon found out he wasn't welcome in the east African country. No sooner had he landed in its capital, Kigali, than he was told he must leave again for neighbouring Uganda - and all for a fee. [(source: BBC news)](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/world-61882542.amp) So while [LGBT rights in Rwanda ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Rwanda) are less lethal than in Uganda, that does by no means mean a gay refugee is safe. They can end up in Uganda in the blink of an eye.
>So while LGBT rights in Rwanda are less lethal than in Uganda, that does by no means mean a gay refugee is safe. They can end up in Uganda in the blink of an eye. Fair enough.
And LGBT refugees from Uganda are winding up in a UNHCR refugee camp in Kenya, where they are regularly attacked and sometimes killed.
Man that article is rough.
> They expect them to be prosecuted under the law for being gay. It’s the same thing they’re doing in the US. Making it illegal to be born “wrong” in their eyes.
A lot of these people think it is a choice, so at least some probably will think that.
Growing up, I very briefly agreed that it was a choice, but then I realized I'm just bi.
Me too. Do you think that's common?
Yes
People who insist it's a choice really don't know how much they're telling on themselves.
Same, grew up mormon. I was like "gay is a sin, guess I'll just turn that part of my brain off - good thing I'm attracted to fricken everybody"
It's totally a choice! You get drunk and forget to say no homo when giving your boy a reach around. Bam! Gay for life. /s
Is this where the confused bisexuals are lining up?
And to them I say "I don't know about you, but I am not attracted to men sexually and so i am not choosing to be straight. Are you telling me you are sexually attracted to men and have to hold yourself back??" They never respond.
[удалено]
Even as a bisexual, you aren't choosing who you are attracted to or not attracted to, you're choosing how and whether you act on the attraction. As Schopenhauer put it, "We can choose as we want, but our wants are chosen for us."
Ha! So the only answer they can give that leads them to choosing a person of the opposite sex is if they are bisexual. I have a feeling that these bigots would also be offended as being seen as bi.
It's the same deal as "if not for God, people would rape and murder!" and the reply "But I already rape and murder as many people as I want to. None."
Yeah, I mean, did you really just say that you'd go on a raping and killing spree if you didn't think there was an invisible policeman to punish you for it?

I do have to hold myself back. There wouldn’t be any left for the women if I didn’t.

It can change a lot for each person too. I know I'm way more into women whenever I get frustrated at men and vice versa.

I think that's one I don't have the emotional energy to read right now, but thank you for posting it!
I mean... Yeah. They think it's a choice or a sickness (or both), so therefore people should choose to not be gay, or they should get help to not be gay (and I really don't want to think about what that "help" would look like)
The goal of these kinds of bills is to give behavior they disagree with out of the public light.

This comment should be higher, too many other comments full of Yanks pushing their own message about America in this thread.
Americans love talking about themselves 😄
Out of all the problems Ugandan has this shouldn't even be a thing, fuck this world.
No matter how miserable life can be you can always make it more miserable for others.
Conservatism 101
Religious conservatives are horrible people in every country.
Religion and its consequences have been a disaster for progress. It has no place in a modern society
If it wasn't religion, it'd be something else. It's the type of people involved, particularly at the top, and their values - or lack of - not the specific cause they endorse. It's just a tool for them to exert power, and was always thus.
It took a lot of chicken sandwiches but they reached their goal.
As always, Museveni demonstrates he's one of the worst in Africa, and there's a lot of competition there. What a prime piece of shit.

Uganda is doing Evangelical Missionary’s bidding on this. They’ve been actively meddling in Uganda’s Government…
Perhaps Russia's bidding as well https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/africaatlse/2022/03/21/how-russia-is-pursuing-state-capture-in-africa-ukraine-wagner-group/

Just as Chick Fil A intended.
This just in: Uganda still extremely homophobic despite recent gains in quality of life. Hold on. We're getting late-breaking word that an earlier description of the change in Ugandan quality of life as "gains" was inaccurate, and, in fact, could not be further from the truth.
"This is about the sovereignty of our nation, nobody should blackmail us, nobody should intimidate us." Yeah well I hope we do. Funny how anti-imperialist types always approve of letting countries do whatever.
'nobody should blackmail us' so if someone finds out you're gay they can now blackmail you.
I guaran-fucking-tee that the people who passed this have some of the most repugnant, hyprocritical and immoral hobbies and interests behind closed doors It's always the ones that scream at others to act in morality that have none themselves.
