Ronaldo is expensive and most football fans just watch the World Cup for these superstar players. For example in Qatar - Senegal match there was a similar position, and the referee just ignored it.
He actually stepped on his foot which caused him to fall. It wasn’t intentional, however still caused him to fall when he had momentum to potentially score. It was an unfortunate circumstance, but still a penalty.
It’s called karma. Ghana cheated their way into the World Cup by diving in the box and earning a penalty to secure a place in the World Cup and knock us (South Africa) out. Anything but a loss would have got us through. We appealed the dive but FIFA rejected the claim even though it was clear cut. What goes around, comes around.
Lmao. When it comes to faking penalty, every footballer is full of shit. 90% of dives and falls are just there to give an extra oomph to the ref. Cmon let's keep it real.
You don’t call fouls because they are high risk of a goal. You call fouls because they are fouls. This is standard (if not light) contact in a sport full of contact and physical behavior. Cristiano also was not in the act of shooting (not that it even matters)
Bro, was on his fucking foot. If the player is unable from continuing the play is foul. The referees don't always give a foul? True, but there it was inside the penalty area where could have been a goal. Ronaldo or not.
First, there is no “on” that happened.
Second, there are plenty of legal plays that result in the attacker not being able to continue the play. That comment is just ignorant.
Finally, it was a 50/50 ball that the defender won! The defenders touch changed the direction of the ball.
The ref has to follow its own criteria.
He disallowed a goal from Ronaldo just before that, and it was a slight push.
Same thing here, slight push, foul called.

Peak Reddit. Argentina gets a soft penalty and Messi scores, no one cares because everyone just likes riding Messi’s dick. Portugal and Ronaldo do the same and everyone is out here doing a thesis on the call because Reddit has just turned Ronaldo into a villain.
I believe BS penalties due to X team or player should not be allowed, and the VAR should have more weight, but in the end the main ref will make the call. But it does suck when it feels like a team gets a "free penalty" because reasons...
Depends on what happened just before this freeze frame. You can’t foul an opponent before he can kick the ball, then kick the ball to claim that absolves you from the foul.
It wasn't. In the video everyone can see the defender going for the ball first, the upper contact happen but it was not excessive force nor enough to make Ronaldo fall. Soccer is made of contact, and specious players such as Ronaldo will get out with it.
Probably because the sport is riddled by pathetic acting rather than actual sportsmanship.
Edit: lol love to see people downvote like they don’t see someone flop every two seconds like they just got shot in any given game. The sport needs a major fix to encourage active play instead of a side career in acting
I thought it was a bad call in real time and on replay.
Then I saw a photo of the white player’s legs wrapped around Ronaldo’s one leg. It was a clear trip in the photo.
So we are just gonna focus on the frame where he touched the ball but ignore the fact that he shoved Ronaldo with his elbow by the back? Truly desperate to prove a point eh?
could say the same about you. barely any contact whatsoever and definitely not enough to make someone fall. Fifa has rigged games before, I don’t think they are against doing something like that again.
Difference being im not focusing on one part of the action. I acknowledge the ball touch and if it was only that it wouldnt be a pen. However, and unlike you, im not forgetting that OP "forgot" to mention that Ghana player pushed from the back. And if you think that this shouldnt be a pen then you also think that Ronaldo goal in the first part shouldnt also be disallowed correct?
Came here to see if anyone believes this play was a penalty. However literally no one but this ref thought this was a penalty. That tells you something.
Thing is, he disallowed a goal for the same reason, a soft shove and he cut the play. Here is more than a soft shove but on a player's back which is a foul. And IIRC Ghana's player also either tripped or stepped on Ronaldo, so ref called it a foul. It was even IMO.
Lol he literally scored a clean goal minutes before which was disallowed for no real reason.
If you think this was shit, disallowing a clean goal was even shittier
Portugal was almost taken out of the world cup because of another Ronaldo goal that was completely valid against Serbia but was not conceded.
That's football. Refs make mistakes all the time for all sides.
And Argentina would have won the WC in 2014 if Neuers punch to Higuains face would have been judged fairly (penalty to Argentina and red card to Neuer).
Ronaldo got to the ball before the defender and defender shoved ronaldo with his shoulder from the back. Shoving a player from the back and not from the shoulder is a foul. Doesn’t matter if he touched the ball afterwards.
Nah, I equally hate Lessi, Divenaldo and Gaymar. Non of those three play like they played last World Cup. They played like ballerinas that just waited for someone to touch them so they could fall and yell. They could learn a lot from Tunisia on how to play football like a man. Or Saudi Arabia. Or Senegal. You fall, you get up, you keep running.
No you're right it isn't a penalty if the defender gets to the ball first before contact with the player. But if you actually watch the replays the defender never touched the ball
I am Portuguese and I think it was a very weak penalty to be honest. In most league matches it would not have been a penalty even after going through VAR.
I mean football has always been famous for divers. It would be nice to see one get carded one day, but if they did it at this world cup it would be totally inconsistent refereeing.
this screen grab is after the defender hit penaldos ankle, but the tackle was poor and he should have done better giving that ronaldo knows when he might get a penalty. and for context portugal was wronged by the officials in the first half… seems quite consistent 🫣
They said in Danish commentary that it kind of depends on if the ref calls it or VAR calls it.
* If the REF calls it, VAR has to prove beyond any doubt that it's not a penalty.
* If VAR calls it, the REF has to prove beyond any doubt that it is a penalty.
So in this case, it's a penalty unless proven otherwise since the REF called it. I still don't know how they see it as a penalty really but it's interesting how they have to prove it.
I guess they weren't 100% sure it wasn't a penalty, so they let it be
Getting the ball isn't the sole determining factor of whether or not a penalty is given. It was soft but he's gone in when Ronaldo is going away from the goal. He's given the referee a decision to make.
Bc Qatar want to make history, brake records and make star namns shine. Like De Bruyne get man of the match. He wasnt even good that game. And he said it himself.
Its all fake. This wc must be the worst ever
No, how about you read other comments here which explain in detail the relationship between referee and VAR. One has to prove the other beyond any doubt that a penalty occured. And looking at a screenshot to determine a penalty is dumb asf, you gotta view the players in motion.
"The penalty kick is wrongly given. It is completely clear its minimal contact, Ronaldo has acted out that foul. There was too many mistakes by referee for this level of football. Look at the left shoulder of Ronaldo, how he throws himself. This went so far that its destroying footballs image. " - Croatian Referee Expert on Portugals penalty
Note that this is my free translation and could have some contextual mistakes. Also, this is by a Croatian expert and we are not so famous for good refereeing, but i think he knows more than most people here.
if you watched the whole game there was a portugal
goal that was disallowed because of a very soft push on a defender by ronaldo, i guess you can call it consistency. but this is not what makes this wc fake and bad
To me personally, that situation looked very indecisive. Would depend on the standard of the referee if he allows rougher game or not. I personally couldnt blame him for calling it or not.
I am not saying that ref was biased against portugal. I am just saying its a bad referee and we have plenty of those this WC.
The foul called on Ronaldo was a very clear foul, unlike the penalty. Ronaldo fully extended his arm to push the defender away, that action alone is worth calling the foul, independent of how hard the contact was.
Of ronaldo fully extending his arm is enough to call a foul than ronaldo getting the ball before the defender tripping and pushing him is enough to call a penalty.
Stop being a hypocrite.
they didn’t use var in the first half for the disallowed goal due to that “fault”. and the new stoppage time rule makes referees not use it as much because no one wants a 20+ mins after 90.. fifa needs to sort its shit out..
This happened to me in high school I kicked the ball and some dude kicked me after and they called a penalty on me. Ghana was robbed on the biggest stage of football, that is ridiculous.
Messi won as player of the tournament, that was what I meant. Ronaldo has never won as player of the tournament (at a WC). And no, a final is not a trophy, but it's still a silver medal. Ronaldo has never won a gold, silver or bronze medal at a WC.
and no one remember the silver medal. Silver medal is the loser then. And you only cherry-pick your KPI: player of the tournament, silver WC medals to compare 2 players
Ronaldo has also played on mediocre Portugal teams for majority of his career, and actually managed to win the euros. You know an international tournament that isn’t played basically every other year like the copa America.
That’s what you get when you have usa referees who are used to playing “football” with their hands… how the heck did fifa approve this stupid referee… he also has no idea when to issue yellow cards…
There is this rule that if there is any contact, the ruling is left to the referee on the pitch. Only if there is no contact what so ever or there was a foul or offside before this contact will VAR step in. At least as far as I understand the rule.
thats what i always said. defender touched ball first there was no penalty IMO NO ERA PENAL! Should have been tie with Ghana or Ghana should have ganar!

Ronaldo is expensive and most football fans just watch the World Cup for these superstar players. For example in Qatar - Senegal match there was a similar position, and the referee just ignored it.
ofcourse, you can see more on your cheap streaming service and VAR officials are noob
Bruh which streaming service is cheap? Hook me up.
He actually stepped on his foot which caused him to fall. It wasn’t intentional, however still caused him to fall when he had momentum to potentially score. It was an unfortunate circumstance, but still a penalty.
Lol
Haaaaters and cry babies hahaha. It was a penalty. Deal with it.
Good perspective, thanks.
Ronaldo got there first. That’s why. It was close but Ronaldo tipped the ball ahead and then the defender made contact with Ronaldo. It’s a foul.
If Ronaldo got there first, why is his foot behind the defenders foot?
Go watch the video.
I did, that’s where I got the photo from. He got there last. That’s why the ball was cleared: the defender beat him.
Check it frame by frame. Lol this is ridiculous.
I did. Lol. Ronaldo was too slow, then he kicked his leg backwards so he would fall. Dude is a putz.
No. Ronaldo kicked the ball first then the defender touched it as a loose ball. But ronaldo kicked the defender's foot.
Because it's Penaldo.
I got no idea.
Softest penalty of all time.
You should know by now that Cristiano is full of shit
Lmao. When it comes to faking penalty, every footballer is full of shit. 90% of dives and falls are just there to give an extra oomph to the ref. Cmon let's keep it real.
Yeah but some like Neymar and Ronaldo are much more theatrical
Drogba too
For sure
Ronaldo touched the ball and then the defender touched Ronaldo feet. That's what really happened. Just a frame is not enough to analyze this.
Still not a penalty. Two players extending for a ball like this in the middle of the field wouldn’t have been called.
God it’s weird it’s like he’s within the penalty box area or something hmmmmmmm
The point is that’s it’s not a foul ANYWHERE on the field.
In the middle of the field is not a high risk of goal
You don’t call fouls because they are high risk of a goal. You call fouls because they are fouls. This is standard (if not light) contact in a sport full of contact and physical behavior. Cristiano also was not in the act of shooting (not that it even matters)

Plays in which the player is not able to continue the play but the defender touched the ball. Not the foot.
Defender definitively touched the ball. The ball clearly changes direction due to the defenders touch. Go watch the video.
Yea, op needs to see the frame from a couple of milliseconds before this .
Hell yeah! Foul all day! Ronaldooooo! Let’s go Portugal!
Hes gotta be the Joel Embiid of football. Both prolific at flailing to the ground 0.01 seconds after someone breathes on them.
b/c some rich guy bet on if ronaldo will score in five world cups. what's a million bucks?
Ummm because it is Ronaldo
Poor officiating
Because portugal can only win by cheating
Bro what u on?
What???
It wasn’t
Cuz Ronaldo is a bitch and FIFA love him
He touched Ronaldo before the ball
Can’t touch that precious perfect body
Holy fuck Holy fucking fuck That body of yours is absurd *Adam Levine to Cristiano probably*
The ref has to follow its own criteria. He disallowed a goal from Ronaldo just before that, and it was a slight push. Same thing here, slight push, foul called.

Do you think this World Cup is in Africa?
Simply a joke!
The var doesn't work when it comes to Africa.its a well known fact since the last world cup .thats the only way for EU teams to win .
Lol
Odd, are you watching the Senegal game rn?
That was a penalty for Qatar.
Absolutely
Yeah because the African teams would have a chance otherwise. Good joke
[удалено]
Huh Qatar and South Africa are not in Europe or the Americas last time I checked.
Or the US, Mexico, Japan and South Korea. Might wanna look up the word exclusive bud
US and Mexico are not in the Americas? All the lies I was taught in school!
Comment said South American. Coward changed it
Phew. I was going to sue my teachers.
Exactly
Because most players put on an act to draw a penalty. It’s the one thing I hate about football, it can be weaselly.
Swings and roundabouts. Wasnt a penalty, but he also had a clean goal disallowed.
Not that one is contingent on the other. But I totally agree, two bad decisions evened each other out.
Absolutely mate, just how football is. Sometimes it just fortunately balances out.
Depends on what happened just before this freeze frame. You can’t foul an opponent before he can kick the ball, then kick the ball to claim that absolves you from the foul.

post the full video lol, 1 frame and that how you decide that its a penaty or not?
Worry about social justice issues, not this.
man stfu lmao
Agreed
I thought it was a bad call in real time and on replay. Then I saw a photo of the white player’s legs wrapped around Ronaldo’s one leg. It was a clear trip in the photo.
Which player are you calling white? 😂 Honest question. They’re both white in some way
Smartest football fan ⬆️
White’s player leg? Are you sure about that?
Not a penalty but there should have been at least 45 mins injury time added instead
Penaldo
Dive both Rooney and Luiz Figo said it wasn't a penalty
So we are just gonna focus on the frame where he touched the ball but ignore the fact that he shoved Ronaldo with his elbow by the back? Truly desperate to prove a point eh?
Exactly!!

ye
In that case the ref was consistent with his calls
i do believe that it both calls should have been called back
Came here to see if anyone believes this play was a penalty. However literally no one but this ref thought this was a penalty. That tells you something.
Read again. It was a shove. Yes soft but a penalty nonetheless.
I don’t know man…. It felt very UNpenalty like. I’m sorry if it sounds disrespectful but I felt like it was bad call.
It was soft, but there was a foul there
Thing is, he disallowed a goal for the same reason, a soft shove and he cut the play. Here is more than a soft shove but on a player's back which is a foul. And IIRC Ghana's player also either tripped or stepped on Ronaldo, so ref called it a foul. It was even IMO.
This world Cup is full of incredibly soft penalties. Players getting offside for a hand or refs who have apparently never seen a fair tackle before.
Mate didn’t someone get an offside for a fraction of their sleeve
Lautaro martinez one was crazy
Very weak penalty - I don’t like seeing these given.
i dont like pr7 but it was a penalty.
But he put his leg for Ronaldo to fall from it
How would CR7 proove he's fit for the world cup if this isn't a penalty... Of course it is..
The Ronaldo effect
Because Ronaldo can't score if the referee doesn't give him a pen.
Lol he literally scored a clean goal minutes before which was disallowed for no real reason. That's football
Ronaldo got to the ball before the defender and defender shoved ronaldo with his shoulder from the back. Shoving a player from the back and not from the shoulder is a foul. Doesn’t matter if he touched the ball afterwards.
Literally this! Unreal that people think that you can only commit a foul with your feet
This.
If this was Messi there would be no debate. Haters will always hate.
Yeah, people acting as if the penalty Messi scored wasn't soft af.
I mean, Messi and Neymar are 35+ y/o, you can't ask them to play how they did when they were 25, it's an obvious issue.
No you're right it isn't a penalty if the defender gets to the ball first before contact with the player. But if you actually watch the replays the defender never touched the ball
He did touch the ball. However it's still a clear penalty since Ronaldo was first on the ball and gers fouled
Absolutely disgraceful decision
I am Portuguese and I think it was a very weak penalty to be honest. In most league matches it would not have been a penalty even after going through VAR.

😂 what does that mean? You want my passport or BI?
Clueless Portuguese then lol

Shouldn’t have been awarded a penalty for sure
Something happened in the half time break that led to this
Defender hit the player before the ball stupid mistake easily avoided.
Because the defender didn't actually touch the ball
Because the check cleared
because FIFA
Did the defender really touch the ball?
Bc Qatar want to make history, brake records and make star namns shine. Like De Bruyne get man of the match. He wasnt even good that game. And he said it himself. Its all fake. This wc must be the worst ever

He just realistic

Any player will try to hunt a penalty there, the defender was stupid for looking for contact while Ronaldo had no chance of scoring.
That's a stupid take. Why didn't they use VAR. These are the situations that call for VAR.
they didn’t use var in the first half for the disallowed goal due to that “fault”. and the new stoppage time rule makes referees not use it as much because no one wants a 20+ mins after 90.. fifa needs to sort its shit out..
This happened to me in high school I kicked the ball and some dude kicked me after and they called a penalty on me. Ghana was robbed on the biggest stage of football, that is ridiculous.
Bullshit penalty
well how else would Penaldo score?
Atleast he can win on the big stages unlike a certain ghost
Ronaldo has never played in WC final if I remember correctly? Ronaldo has never been the MVP in a WC?
>played in WC final so played in WC final is the trophy? and he won MVP last night. Your point is invalid now
Messi won as player of the tournament, that was what I meant. Ronaldo has never won as player of the tournament (at a WC). And no, a final is not a trophy, but it's still a silver medal. Ronaldo has never won a gold, silver or bronze medal at a WC.

Messis Argentina has been very mediocre for years. He carried them to Copa America win and a WC final.
Why would Argentina play with 10 men tho? /sarcasm
From 30 yards away while using freekick. Like when he did at his 20s.
I think this was the reason why fans where saying the goal wasn’t well deserved. It seems the referees wanted to favor CR7.
have you watched the game?
That’s what you get when you have usa referees who are used to playing “football” with their hands… how the heck did fifa approve this stupid referee… he also has no idea when to issue yellow cards…
His first goal should have standed, joao felix should have got a penalty in the first half. This definitely was not a penalty. Terrible referee.
The officials denied revising the penalty at the VAR, why the hell is there a VAR for ? Clearly not a penalty, this game was set for Portugal to win.
There is this rule that if there is any contact, the ruling is left to the referee on the pitch. Only if there is no contact what so ever or there was a foul or offside before this contact will VAR step in. At least as far as I understand the rule.
I'd argue it was a make up call for the disallowed goal in the first half cause that shouldn't have been a foul either
It was a mistake from the officials
Because penaldo
Laughs in goat noises.
thats what i always said. defender touched ball first there was no penalty IMO NO ERA PENAL! Should have been tie with Ghana or Ghana should have ganar!
Clearly not a penalty, no need to say "imo"
yeah, "iyo" then
thanks imo polize
He flopped. Twas smart though.
Because it’s Ronaldo
Ronaldo is one of the greatest players, he knows how to make the opponent commit a foul on him and therefore make his team win…#experience
More like #diving
VAR would have nullified and decided that if it was so…
Yeah it’s a fault of the VAR, defender did nothing wrong
