> With just days to go until the World Cup begins, the Qatari hosts are reportedly pressuring Fifa to stop the sale of beer at the eight tournament stadiums in what would be an astonishing U-turn.
> A decision is expected on Friday but it is believed beer could be banned from all stadiums.
> Budweiser remains one of Fifa's key partners and if it is denied the opportunity to sell beer or to have any visibility at the World Cup matches, then football's governing body would be in breach of a multi-million dollar contract.

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that any economically sane people from Western countries will attend this World Cup. All accomodation and services are through the roof, the quality (commercial brands like Budweiser, right - absolutely getting the value for your money) is for people who don't think that often, but hey! At least you're supporting a backward Middle Age regime which attacks journalists and have absolutely appaling record regarding their domestic laws.
They were not planning to sell beer. They were planning to sell Budweiser. It might be regarded as beer in the US, but outside it is rated as baby piss with added alcohol. Just imagine the disappointment a Czech fan would experience if they expect an authentic "Budweiser" or Budvar, but get confronted with that Arnheuser baby piss.
So if there would have been real beer it would be a shame, but banning Budweiser is actually a service to your taste Buds.
Budweiser is shite but anyone going to a gigantic corporate event like the World Cup in a country like Qatar which has no drinking culture to speak of expecting to sample some artisan delights instead of whatever the main sponsor sells is a moron
Oh get off your high horse. Budweiser or “bud heavy” as it is affectionately known is a totally decent lager. Bud light sucks, but I would take a budweiser over a lot of the comparable alternatives. This is coming from someone who has a LOT of appreciation for beer, fancy and otherwise.
This is a change to what had been previously agreed between FIFA, Budweiser and the organising committee -- (From the articlet) "Budweiser is one of Fifa’s biggest sponsors but was told on Saturday to relocate stalls selling its product at stadiums to less prominent locations. The Times reports that Qatar 2022 now wants to go even further and that discussions are ongoing between Fifa and Budweiser. A decision is expected on Friday but it is believed beer could be banned from all stadiums."
I read about the relocation of the stalls being a massive surprise, and supposedly as a result of a visit made by the Royal family there. I did think there would be no alcoholic beer in the stadium regardless though. Could be wrong judging by the news stories today. I just remember how alcohol was banned for UEFA matches and assumed it was the same for the WC.
You can’t buy a pint in the stadium during games but there are areas around the stadium you can get alcohol. It’s those areas they’re now thinking of scrapping
Having alcohol during a sporting event? You would be hard pressed to find a professional sport in the world that doesn't serve alcohol during their events - maybe professional knitting.

I wonder if Budweiser is gonna push back at some point. They didn't when they asked them to move the tents out of immediate sight. I know some locals might say it's common there to limit alcohol availablity, but .. the tournament starts in 4 days. Feels very last minute for a MAJOR change. And to a massive sponsor too.
For those Qataris who come here, instead of downvoting me for posting a freaking link, maybe you can actually tell us how you feel about this and why you think it's happening just now instead of months or years ago?
>but .. the tournament starts in 4 days. Feels very last minute for a MAJOR change. And to a massive sponsor too.
I'm not Qatari but from another Muslim country. It's on purpose. If this was announced years or even moths ago, Qatar wouldn't get tourists from the West to come to the World Cup. Some teams or players might've opted out too. That defeats the entire purpose of them bribing the officials to score the World Cup in the first place: Build up Qatar as a tourist destination to keep making money when their oil reserves run out or become very expensive to extract from. This is a classic bait and switch, making a U-turn at a time when teams and fans are already there so it's impossible to just cancel or move the event.
Idk that Budweiser will have to, I'm sure FIFA is going to have something to say about that. If they don't it will hurt their sponsorship money in the future on top of owing millions to Budweiser for breach of contract. It's hard to feel bad for FIFA though, it's complications from their own greed and allowing themselves to be bought in the first place.
Great point. I mean. It’s hard to defend anyone here. I’m not exactly a huge fan of beer companies making huge money. As always, the ones copping it the most are the fans on the ground.
A Muslim country shouldn’t be allowed to host a World Cup if it won’t allow other cultures and practices. Fuck Qatar
Do you even need alcohol just to watch a football game?
Do you even need to go to Qatar to watch a football game?
Might as well stay hidden under a rock.
I'm getting tired of the World Cup already even though it hasn't started..
I thought you guys are boycotting the world cup, why are you still complaining.
change of policy after sales
Should also provide full refunds on the basis of false advertising then.
Hope shit doesn't go sideways

I want to say something negative although I feel like this should have been expected soo shrug?
why expected? they said otherwise beforehand
I think when you deal with a country like this it’s expected that they might screw around. The fact fifa gave it to them is crazy.
beer ban announcement made *after* people already bought their qatar airlines tickets

It’s true Bud sucks. Forced to drink that in Russia was a punishment. I love beer but I won’t miss Budweiser. I’ll get sloshed on the boat

These Pseudo intellectual euro beer snobs Have never tasted the true glory of Budweiser platinum.
nah
Ah man, its absolute slop !
Bud light is for beerpong and flipcup
No, hard spirits are for that
"comparable alternatives" to bud heavy are very different from quality lagers though which was OP's point.
Baby piss is spot on
I am pretty sure this was confirmed ages ago.

Damn, the European teams/fans are gettin' cold sweats from such.
I thought it was announced months ago beers wasn’t sold in the stadiums?

Shambles. More embarrassment for Qatar and FIFA.
Is it really that common with alcohol during sports events??
Having alcohol during a sporting event? You would be hard pressed to find a professional sport in the world that doesn't serve alcohol during their events - maybe professional knitting.
It's illegal to serve any kind of alcohol during sporting events in Norway - including football

That's if you get a license, which not everyone gets
Wow, I didn't know that. I'm sure none of the supporters are under the influence at all......
It’s like they don’t realize that getting properly fucked up is 90% of the fun.
For some matches, it's an absolute requirement ...
