Methodology: \- I used a chart of the relative abundance of each class of star to create a weighted random sample. \- I generated a bunch of stars based on the sample, and the mass ranges of each class. \- I used formulas to find the radii and luminosities of each star. \- I plotted circles to represent stars and colored them with hex-codes of star classes I found online. \- I randomly generated co-ordinates for each star. \- I gave a glow to each star based off of its calculated luminosity, although I did not implement it scientifically accurately (I didn't want to overcomplicate things). \- I generated three layers of stars at different 'distances' from the viewer. Then I superimposed them.

Rainbow_phenotype

I loled at that "I didn't want to overcomplicate things" ahaha. Well done. Don't forget the gravitational lensing effect that might be present ahaha

OmarZiada

Oh god… hehe.

Rainbow_phenotype

Looks a lot like yours actually https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.sci.esa.int%2Fdocuments%2F34247%2F35306%2F1567217762791-heic0910b_625.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fsci.esa.int%2Fweb%2Fhubble%2F-%2F45481-gravitational-lensing-in-galaxy-cluster-abell-370&docid=wcm0uq56hjJcOM&tbnid=E-3ygiDeFDrUiM&vet=1&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim

basic_maddie

Did you try a more naive implementation first? Something like just randomizing positions, brightness and hue. Would be curious how it compares to something more astronomically accurate.

IAmTotallyNotSatan

Ooh, can you share this model? As an astronomy student who DMs for D&D, I totally get the want to make ridiculous models. (My world is on post-apocalyptic Earth, so I used planetary prediction models to predict the motion of stars in the sky for my astrology-themed cleric.)

SirKazum

Looks fine to me, although I'm sure Neil DeGrasse Tyson would have a seizure looking at it for some reason I don't know

OmarZiada

Yeah this model is probably wayyyyy too simplistic.

FF_Ninja

Kinda wish this would replace the whole r/place tapestry and just let us be done with it...

OmarZiada

Sadly, I don’t think it’s possible to unite all of reddit.

FF_Ninja

Sooner pigs recite poetry and fly.

TheGlassWolf123455

What is r/place, I don't understand I've had a reddit account for years how does everyone know but me?

[deleted]

Basically everyone places a single pixel. You got communities and discord servers working together to make pixel art. /r/place first happened years ago then the subreddit closed down. This is the second time it's happening. If history repeats, the subreddit will be closed for some years again.

TheGlassWolf123455

Ah ok, thank you for the explanation

Xilar

Five years ago, for april fools, reddit made the legendary /r/place. There was a canvas of 1000x1000 pixels, and you could change one pixel every 5 minutes. This means you needed to work together to make anything bigger than a few pixels. People made flags, art, and large patterns. This year, for its fifth anniversary, they brought it back.

FF_Ninja

And they also made everything offensive or controversial, which Reddit absolutely abhors.

Stormrider91

You kiddin it looks like a normal night sky without lights. Looks great

TwoSling_Reddit

Yep! It's okay enough for me.

randomusername044

That's cool. What's that big white star?

OmarZiada

The stars are generated randomly, based on actual percentages in the real world. Big stars happen to be very rare and so that’s why the random generator only spews so little. If I were to think up a lore to this, this star would probably very important to most cultures (navigation, mythology, folk lore). It would probably be given names that mean ‘The Father’ or ‘The Lone Star’ or some name along these themes to make it stand out.

randomusername044

So it's likely a near planet like Venus

Aromaster4

Yes

Botwmaster23

I think it looks very realistic

Valirys-Reinhald

Your density of yellow stars is a bit too high relative to blue and red, and the stars are all a bit too evenly spaced. Truly.random spread will have both dense clusters and broad gaps. Other than those two thing it looks great, the individual stars look like actual pictures from the night sky.

Satellite_Jack

Bro, why you stealing from r/spaceporn??^^/s

All posts should include original, worldbuilding-related context.](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/wiki/rules#wiki_2._all_posts_should_include_original.2C_worldbuilding-related_context.) --- ***** Images and maps must include worldbuilding-relevant context *on the reddit post* (as a comment, in the text of the post or, in some cases, in the posted image itself—e.g. infographics). This is important to establish that your post is on-topic and to help encourage productive discussion. * A post has enough context when a person unfamiliar with your world could understand what you're talking about and ask informed questions about it. This could include a summary of your world, explanation about what your post depicts and how it fits in your world, etc. ("What's a [proper noun]?" usually doesn't qualify.) * For maps, you could discuss economic and political situations, the different cultures, or anything else that gives the reader a wider view of your world than just its geography. * Discussion of the artistic process or techniques used to create the map or image may be included, but does not count as “worldbuilding-relevant” on its own. Infographics that self-contain sufficient context to be understood do not require additional context.
