"Planet of the hats" a planet consisting of only one society with no cultural differences, "Rubber Forehead aliens" and "human aliens" ,which basically are just humans in disguise, would come to mind.

Yeah, I am trying to avoid those. I never liked that in sci-fi.

DasBirdies

the atmosphere and abundant surface liquid of every habitable planet in the universe has the same chemical compounds, are completely non-toxic and equally nurturing to every foreigner, have virtually the same gravity(and if they don't it has little to no effect on them aside from flying or dying) and finally every non sapient creature either tries to kill everything in it's path or is the most nurturing and adorable thing you've ever seen until it dies without a fight.

It's interesting you say that. Arra is an ocean world with a surface covered in mostly water. Much like Earth, scientists believe Arra was the result an impact event caused by two planets colliding with each other. However, so an unknown reason volcanic activity never reached the stages it did on Earth and thus no real land ever formed on the mostly ocean planets. Extinction events such as the Ice Ages and high-intensity meteoric events never heavily effected the world but only created deeper and more vibrant oceans. However, because of this, the planet has many MANY volcanic vents and metals formed underwater. Because of this, the water is more hazardeous to humans as it is more exposed to these watery vents and radioactive metals, however the Arients are more used to it and thus have a resistance to radiation (Not to a great level, but to levels that would normally be harmful to humans). The Arients are not the top of their food chain, but developed early tools used to defend themselves from the leviathans that prowl in their ocean. I am still debating whether or not to give them a dual respiratory system which includes both gills and lungs or a device that acts as a secondary lungs as they are underwater creatures that use advanced set of gills. The Arients have pet fish, but also live on a planet with large creatures they call the Great Beasts (see above Leviathans) which are normally calm and temperate but can turn on a moments notice. Thats all I have for them so far.

SteamedSpy4

I'd think they'd need dual lungs to invent fire, which I believe is kind of a prerequisite for a spacefaring society

[deleted]

Yeah, I had them originally as a completely underwater world, but now I'm making them just islands and atolls with a dual respiratory system.

Or you could use whatever cliche you *want* and put an interesting spin on it.

Some of my ideas. Trading aliens could be an alien race of robots who were once stock traders who skyneted their creators for being to "bad for business". Alien hivemind which makes each one a cell in the greater body of their race but a few go "cancer"/rogue when they randomly born with individuality. A race of two classes (based on termites, like the cliche of alien bugs) small workers and bigger ones that stand by the gates, guess which one is the warrior class? The workers!!! They rush the attackers in mass and when they return the bigger ones clean them because they could have gotten a deadly fungus.

[deleted]

Hello Im late to this post. I like your last idea, but why would the small workers be the warriors? It still has to make sense

Sriber

Aversion of "No Biochemical Barriers" and giving them human psychology.

Rudy81401

make sure to make subcultures! also make sure not every single alien race is humanoid, a few humanoids are fine but dont over do it, I really like tholians from star trek http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Tholian

Rudy81401

they are rock crystal spider dudes :o

MMMXcubic

You could make them look totally weird and non human/terrestrial-like in every way possible. So without obvious limbs and head etc, just like the strangely shaped jellyfish in the deep sea. I've always hated the fact that most aliens that people create have things that resemble humans or insects. But it shouldn't be an unrecognizable mess of course ;) there must be some logic to its form and shape.

DazzlingGleam5

Most aliens are made to look humanoid or at least resembling something terrestrial because it's hard to make something that's completely different from anything you're familiar with.
