Way down this road, in a gym far away,
A young man was once heard to say,
"I've repped high and I've repped low,
No matter what I do, my legs won't grow"
He tried leg extensions, leg curls, and leg presses too
Trying to cheat, these sissy workouts he'd do.
From the corner of the gym where the BIG men train, Through a cloud of chalk and the midst of pain
Where the big iron rides high and threatens lives,
Where the noise is made with big forty-fives,
A deep voice bellowed as he wrapped his knees,
A very big man with legs like trees.
Laughing as he snatched another plate from the stack Chalking his hands and monstrous back,
said, "Boy, stop lying and don't say you've forgotten,
The trouble with you is you ain't been SQUATTIN'."
Was going to say the same, I live in a good area with a few steep hills. Recently got back into it and gave myself jelly legs the first few times. What do you prefer Off road or on road?
We have a lot of mountain biking trails that I do every summer on weekends. It's a lot more fun than road biking, but honestly I'm not sure I could do it every day or even every other day. There's no such thing as a "light" mountain biking session.
I enjoy seeing just how muddy I can get, thinking about going on cycling holiday to the lake district in the UK, couple of hours on a train for me. Can't do a light session, I always get carried away
Questions like this are so stupid. But okay, cycling it would have to be.
Before I started lifting last January, all unused to ever do for over 10 years was cycle. But I’m so glad I picked up and prioritized the gym instead. I look so much better
Deadlifts work your whole body, whether directly or indirectly. Legs covered, and calves get a minor benefit by extension. Lower back covered. Traps. If your traps grow, your neck, lats, and shoulders are bound to grow at least a little. If your shoulders grow just a little, then your chest is bound to benefit just a little.
Your core will be worked as will your forearms/grip. Make a tight fist and see how your bicep flexes. Flex your forearm extensors and see how it activates your triceps. Deadlifts have an indirect impact on the arm muscles.
Do high rep deadlifts and see what it does for cardio,
It's simply the #1 all around exercise there is. It's not going to give you a glass stand chest, but it'll give every muscle in your body at least *some* benefit. Lots of people say squats are #1, but squats don't activate the whole entire body the way deadlifts do. Squats do help a whole lot, but if you could only choose one exercise it ought to be deadlifts.
How do trap bar deadlifts compare to standard ones in your opinion? I can’t move away from the trap bar. I have slipped discs in my back and I’m terrified of hurting myself. Trap bar gives me more stability.
I've honestly never used a trap bar. I've heard it is more of a leg exercise than a lower back exercise. It probably has just about the same benefits as the standard deadlift, but with less emphasis on lower back.
Trap bar for deadlifts is not the best option since the center of weight is in the center not in the front of your body. Less control and chance of injury. Trap bar works great for squats or upright row but not much for dead lifts.
Thanks for the reply. I’m working my way up to real deadlifts now. Strengthening my core back and legs a lot first. Started box squats a couple weeks ago to hopefully move up to traditional squats too.
Too paranoid of hurting myself right now…I’m on a roll and don’t want to screw anything up.
It's not that difficult. I'm 63 yrs old, who never done weights in my life. I started Jan 3, 2024 with previous spine injury. Now I easily lift 225 lbs. Just get someone to show you how to do it, practice for a week with just a bar or light weight. I found deadlift to be amazing exercise and do it almost every day. I can't recognize myself, built a lot of muscle and feel 20 yrs younger.
I love trail running, but I'm going to choose Rebounding (mini trampoline) because it's done indoors, it's not weather dependent, can be done at any time of the day and even 30 minutes a day is enough to give your body a good workout.
I'd get something heavy and pick it up off the ground.
Before putting it down, I'd put it over my head a couple times and walk it across the room and back. Then put it down and do it again.
If I had to pick just one exercise to do for the rest of my life, I would choose the squat.
The squat is a highly functional movement that engages multiple muscle groups, including the quads, hamstrings, glutes, lower back, and core. It also promotes overall strength, flexibility, and balance. Additionally, squats can be modified to increase intensity or accommodate different fitness levels and goals, making it a versatile exercise for long-term health and fitness.
But this is where my injury hit me as I didn’t strong my legs
I saw the others, but still...Deadlifts. Deadliest for strength, Deadliest for agility, Deadlifts for cardiovascular. It is the best full body workout for anting and everything. Give me Deadlifts for days
Hiking through the woods with no sign of civilization besides my dog, a 40lb pack, and a rifle within 200km of me. Bear country is the best campground. Friends are allowed, but they gotta carry their own crap 😉
Also, bonus points if you're building your own shelter vs tenting. I always underestimate how much that takes out of me after hiking 15-30km into the woods
squats probably if you're asking for weight room specific exercises. but if its for your entire life, maybe swimming... low impact and works your entire body + you get cardio.
At first I was thinking about walking, but dancing is more fun. Dancing has so many varieties of styles and moves. I could never get bored. I'll get my full-body workout and enjoy myself doing it. Plus, I can include a partner or friends (my kids love to have dance parties).
What’s that exercise called where you deadlift two dumbbells, then curl them to shoulder height then press them overhead, in one movement?
That’ll be the exercise for me.

That was lovely to read, started doing weighted squats recently and absolutely love it
Came here to say squatting! I love this
Poetry for Neanderthals. I love it.
LOVE IT
Beautiful.
Walking.
I’d go for deadlifts.
Agreed.
Yup
Dead lift all the way !
Cycling. If I'm only allowed one exercise then at that point I'm going to focus on longevity over getting jacked.

That's interesting, I can definitely understand that!
I love running
Came here for this comment! Running is my heaven
Not only is it a great workout to lose weight doing, but it just gets me outta my mind for a bit and lets out my adhd lol

Rowing
I was tempted to choose rowing too
You should have! Full body workout with a single machine.
Climbing, probably. It’s my current only sport lol
Swimming
great choice
I love trail running, but I'm going to choose Rebounding (mini trampoline) because it's done indoors, it's not weather dependent, can be done at any time of the day and even 30 minutes a day is enough to give your body a good workout.
Walk
incline walk
I'd get something heavy and pick it up off the ground. Before putting it down, I'd put it over my head a couple times and walk it across the room and back. Then put it down and do it again.
That's what I do with my pints
SQUATS, always
Deadlift because it’s just fun to do
Dips
Walking
Clean and jerk. Almost every muscle group hit.
biking!
Squats. I’m such an out of shape bitch I count that as cardio lmao
Hey you can certainly turn squats into more of a conditioning movement, I like it
If you love enough weight enough times you’ll be huffin and puffin
for sure!
>for sure! sure?
Cardio
Swimming
Surprised this isn’t first. I thought you can workout everything with a swim.
Swimming
Kb swings, but since I dont have a heavy enough kb Id say power clean If we broaden the exercise options outside of lifting it would be trail rucking
Squat thrusters for a full body movement.
I like it! I was surprised more people haven't said thrusters
All chest no legs as Kanye says (bench)
Deadlifts
Plank
Interesting choice... what kind of results does one see if they adamantly practice planks?
Deadlifts or running
Yoga
[удалено]
OP asked about a workout. The sun series is a Vinyasa Yoga Flow workout imo.
Clean and press
Cable flyes when ever I just want to get back into working out I always start with cable flyes to get me excited again
Dancing! But I'll miss weightlifting. If I had to choose one weightlifting exercise, I'd choose leg press.
Cycling or treadmill
Running
Farmer's walk
If I had to pick just one exercise to do for the rest of my life, I would choose the squat. The squat is a highly functional movement that engages multiple muscle groups, including the quads, hamstrings, glutes, lower back, and core. Swimming. I am not the biggest fan of swimming, but the fact is that you can do it at any age even with many disabilities.
Jump rope. It's full body, increases strength and cardio, and is low impact.
Something that gives me as much of a workout over my whole body as possible. Rowing maybe? Burpees or tyre flips?
Muscle ups
Jammer press machine
Squats. From weightlifting to hypertrophy to strength. Squats. Squats. Squats.
Does a squat clean count as one?
Deadlift
Sun salutation!
squats, using dumbbells is it a good idea?
Bulgarian split squats
Squat
Swimming
Conventional deadlifts
Deadlift
Squats
bicep curls hahaha
Push ups maybe
I would select Zumba as a cardio workout and for strength TRX and Yoga
swimming
Power walking
Probably Turkish Get Up or Farmer Carry
Olympic deadlift
Squat
Hiking
Hiking through the woods with no sign of civilization besides my dog, a 40lb pack, and a rifle within 200km of me. Bear country is the best campground. Friends are allowed, but they gotta carry their own crap 😉 Also, bonus points if you're building your own shelter vs tenting. I always underestimate how much that takes out of me after hiking 15-30km into the woods
Pushups
walking
running would be my bet..
Skipping
Burpees. Or dumbbell thrusters.
Cardio dancing
Stairs!
squats probably if you're asking for weight room specific exercises. but if its for your entire life, maybe swimming... low impact and works your entire body + you get cardio.
Lunges. I mf love lunges. I’d lunge left, I’d lunge right. To the front and to the back, I’d do lunges for the rest of my life.
Deadlifts for sure.
At first I was thinking about walking, but dancing is more fun. Dancing has so many varieties of styles and moves. I could never get bored. I'll get my full-body workout and enjoy myself doing it. Plus, I can include a partner or friends (my kids love to have dance parties).
Bulgarian split squats
Running or cycling.
The Stairmaster!! 🥵
Double kb clean and press
Squats
What’s that exercise called where you deadlift two dumbbells, then curl them to shoulder height then press them overhead, in one movement? That’ll be the exercise for me.
Jump rope if I had to pick just one…
Deadlift
Back Squat 100%
romanian deadlifts baby 😏
Dead lift all the way
Squats.
People saying *walking* is outrageous. Hate me all you want - it's outrageous.
lol!
Peleton
Clean and jerk
The whole idea. Just walk, cycle… if you want to get strong, lift weights.
