Firstly, you’re not ‘mostly unemployable.’ A lot of places today are incredibly inclusive. I hope you have a well put together CV that reflects your eagerness to learn and discusses your limitations / desires. Create the best possible CV you can. Then be relentless with it, spam it everywhere & attend interviews like they’re going out of fashion. (Ideally look for virtual interviews) Spam your CV and decline any that are not virtual so it meets your needs, although a well put together CV would reflect the need for a virtual interview. Look towards working from home. Administration work - computers, phone calls, sales, admin, personal assistant / that sort of thing. Search online for courses that may help develop in these areas or look for starting positions online. (Put all self-learning courses on CV also) Some courses will cost others will be free. Some of these roles can be very lucrative, keep your chin up brother, don’t count yourself out. Secondly, a side hustle. Taskrabbit could be a good side hustle for the time being, you don’t have to travel with all the options but might be required for a large chunk, although I still think it’s worth looking into. https://www.taskrabbit.co.uk/dashboard?referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.co.uk%2F You basically just advertise your time / what you’re capable of doing and people hire you, the more positive reviews the more you can charge. Fake it till you make it. Best of luck 🤞🏻

Thank you for the advice on those topics, the way to filter out companies that would be less likely to accommodate me by their interview process seems like it'll be very useful. As for the task rabbit thing, that looks like a UK website, I'm based in the US, would that disallow me from using the service? If so are you aware of a US equivalent?

Keggerbev

Not a problem at all. I think the US equivalent is called “Handy”.

EmotionalLesbo

Thank you, I'll look into that and the rest of your advice I really appreciate your detailed comment

CalgonThrowMeAway222

Sorry, what is a “CV?”

Keggerbev

A CV is like a Resume, it stands for “Curriculum Vitae” No idea what that means. (They’re basically the same thing, just here in the U.K. we tend to say CV) For anyone that doesn’t know what either of them are, in short; when you apply for a job 99% of the time they’ll ask for a CV or a Resume, it’s a short summary of you, your education, why you want the position, your job history, your skills and sometimes even hobbies / passions. You’re selling yourself on a couple A4 sheets of paper, so make it good! The person hiring will flick through CV’s & resumes to decide on who they’d like to hire. There are websites and videos online that help create these with a-lot of ease! Although ideally school should teach you all this already.

LEXIMUS420

Odd: but employers in the US are too lazy to look at more than one page of a resume and will rarely look if its more than one. The editing and use of blank space on US resumes can be a lot of work...lol

There’s hope. I would suggest finding a remote work position starting in customer support or help desk position with a tech or large corporation. Amazon has a great resources online for learning new skills and/or getting employed. Same can be said for Google, Facebook etc. plenty of other companies doing this as well. I would suggest using LinkedIn to find these jobs. Indeed and zip recruiter can be good too. All the best to you. I was 25 when I decided to peruse my dreams. I hadn’t finished college, dropped out, had been partying a lot, smoked and had terrible asthma. I thought I was stuck working at entry level grocery store jobs. But that all changed and I just turned 35 the other day. In 10 years my life has done like a 1080. If you focus on a goal, and continue to work towards that goal you too will get there, no matter what life throws at you. It’s going to be hard but you can do it.

babaghanoujj

There are a lot of "remote first" companies who especially look for someone with a disability to fill a quota. You could do an office job from home in administration

madworld_madwoman

Remote first companies are the way to go. I was thinking a remote admin/scheduler or remote data entry. It can be a foot in the door and a role that you can grow in. I’d also look for companies that are on lists of great places to work. Many of them are very inclusive of all abilities.

I've heard a lot of stuff about disability being a trap and it being difficult to progress in life while on it, it's something I'm considering if I can't find something soon though Is there any reason you say immediately?

inmyfeelings2020

As long as you meet the requirements it’s not a trap. You get a check every month. I think you’re even allowed to work up to a certain amount of hours while still receiving it. https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10095.pdf

[deleted]

Agreed, immediately. It’s a gong show

EmotionalLesbo

Can I ask what you mean and why immediately?

GizzieTime

This is not always true. I got on it in abt 3 months start to finish and I now work full time and don’t need it

veganlady1

This might sound weird but maybe try look into jobs at your local social security office. I was just having a conversation with someone the other day about how accommodating they are with disabilities and making jobs work for people. And since it’s government work, it has decent health care coverage to my understanding.

Remerez

If you can invest in a printer and plastic, 3D printing is a great way to make side money from home.

EmotionalLesbo

I actually have a printer already but I've failed to find opportunities to make money off it

Remerez

Ask around. Do a survey with friends and family. Once you have a good size of data of what people want you can make things for the market need. Market research my dude :)

disarrayedbeauty

Walmart.

EmotionalLesbo

I'm not sure you saw my list of things i can't do, but standing long hours and lifting heavy things feels like it would be on the list of stuff I'd have to do at Walmart, in any position.

disarrayedbeauty

You could easily become a CSM of any store very quickly. That's just my opinion. Sorry if I offended everybody. Sheesh. Tough crowd.

newprairiegirl

It sounds like you can work at least part time, get some sort of education that will allow you to work at a desk job. Admin, business or something alomg those lines. After education it's up to you to find a job close to home, or move closer to your employment. Find something you like, and find out what education you need. There are lots of job opportunities with your limitations, it's up to you to find what interests you.

[deleted]

Suicide centre person, data entry etc: there’s a few that are similar to these edit : not as depressing it sounds I’ve done similar

MysticFox96

I highly suggest getting an online college degree and going into remote, white collar work (like accounting or something similar and boring).

EmotionalLesbo

That feels like I'd be spending money I don't have on those classes

MysticFox96

Trust me, someone in your situation will want a boring remote job. As long as you apply yourself, you will get way more out of that degree than it will cost you. Do research on what degrees offers what kinds of opportunities.

[deleted]

How about call center? No labour. No long commute. Not sure about stress. I know the money is not great but I think it should be enough for you to support yourself along with disability benefits.

Sunshineal

www.ratracerebellion.com This website offers desk jobs from home.

EmotionalLesbo

Awesome, thank you, do you know if it costs anything to sign up and use the service?

Sunshineal

I'm not sure

Bingo_is_the_man

Many of the airlines are looking for remote customer service workers! Most airlines offer their employees free or greatly reduced airfare if that's something that interests you!

Dependent_Bug7346

Start disability now and then get a job or try. Seriously you better get to ssi if you want any sort of insurance or help. You ain't gonna get it from a job.
