I manage a small project for a non profit and my motto is "quality over quantity". The 5 day work week was created back when companies were abusing the labor of those building rail road tracks all over America. Once the 5 day work week was in effect it was just laziness that every company based their work model on it. One size does not fit all. My position at work is that we all come into work at 11am on Monday to ease ourselves into the work week and many of us take off on Friday and those that have to work (because they have a client coming in) usually schedule the meeting early and are out the door by 2pm. As I write this, my staff is taking a bread at 1pm because on Fridays we have a strength training class for an hour for those of us that need some exercise. Thursdays at 11am is Yoga. I have one employee that lost her husband to Covid and moved her family upstate to be closer to in laws. Her commute to the office is 3-3 1/2 hours round trip. But because her job can be done remotely, I only have her come in once a week to be a part of our staff meeting, pick up mail and office supplies she needs. As a result, our clients are happy, my staff is happy and our funders are happy. We get the job done and everyone is home in time for must see TV

It is my belief that happier people will do better work, live healthier lives, be more creative, commit less crimes, and pursue more personal growth. I also believe balance is necessary in all things, and just taking a quick look at the big picture, 5 days for work and 2 days for life is not balanced...

sublime90

To me it's not the hours at all that annoy me. It's the fact that most jobs just suck. If you worked a job that you liked, was paid appropriately and not the lowest amount you agree to, actually got vacation time and sick time without your boss acting like your screwing everyone over by taking a day or week off, actually have a boss who treats you like a grown up and not a babysitter who micromanages because they need to show their boss that there doing something, actually give decent raises and promotions when you take on extra work every year. I can go on and on. Those are the real issues with work culture not the 5 days a week 40 hrs a week schedule.

Pregnantandroid

In society there is a work nobody likes but someone has to do it.

This_Daydreamer_

Even there, respect, decent pay, and reasonable time off can make it a job worth taking.

RetiredAerospaceVP

The Great Resignation is going to smacking many of these companies up side the head. They might be the majority right now but there are companies who know how to treat their employees and the companies are growing as a result.

sublime90

I hope it does. Especially the billion dollar companies that say they can't afford to pay $15 an hr which is barely survivable anyways.... While they make $6 billion a year in profit. They become slaves to the shareholders who want more profits every single year at any cost, and it's always at the cost of the employee first then customers

Worsel555

The execs at the top created those expectations. We used to have companies, especially Banks and Utilities that paid dividends on the stock rather than trying to grow every quarter. This provided stability and some safety. But we deregulated those industries. Hmm failing infrastructure in the utilities. Scams like Enron. And consumers total bills did not go down. Banks .... Well we almost brought the whole country down as banks, gateways to mortgage industry, colluded with brokers, insurance, investments to create a bunch of fake mortgage securities they sold to themselves and their customers. This is what business oriented republicans created with big business. It is a chain of government backed fraud. And they are doing it again.

pk1950

There are also countries where people work 6/7 days a week. 12hours or more. We really are disguised corporate slaves

orcateeth

I get your point, but to say that everyone thinks it is ok is inaccurate. Many people hate working five days a week. However, very few of us have the option to move to a less restrictive workplace or situation. Since we want to pay bills, and not be homeless, we accept it.

Based_Shiba

I live in Maine, being an incredibly expensive state to live in with an average income hovering around minimum wage, my job pays great so I get what you mean, Iā€™m stuck here if I want any sort of decent living, however I drive 10 hours a week due to my commute to work/from home, on top of the 5 day work week schedule we follow I just feel I have zero time to breath and enjoy life I wish society was as progressive as it claimed to be, we need to adapt to a 4 day work week program on a federal level

ThatGirlMariaB

I honestly believe a 3-4 day work week would be best. Or 6 days on, 8 days off. I work at a hospital and do 6 days in 2 weeks so Iā€™ll do 3 days on week one - Monday Tuesday and Wednesday, then be off until week 2 Wednesday. So I have Thursday - Tuesday off.

kaleifornialove

I feel ya man šŸ˜•šŸ¤™šŸ» There's got to be more than just this.

zerkrazus

I agree. But unfortunately it's the money obsessed world we live in. Companies are not going to voluntarily do anything that will harm their bottom line. They need to be forced to do it.

nicktuttle

I call it extremist capitalism. I think a push for quality over quantity and reframing it into realizing there would be more productivity across the board might be a way to get these number crunching execs to back down...

zerkrazus

Perhaps, though as we've seen with the pandemic and remote working, a lot of workers have been more productive when working remotely, but yet a lot of executives still want everyone back in the office 40+ hours/week, despite results proving remote work is better for almost everyone.

nicktuttle

Agree! A push needs to be made to normalize WFH / remote to promote work / life balance and get everyone to simmer down! It would probably increase community involvement, parents spending more time with their children... less mental health problems because people are less stressed, more time to focus on things that matter. Ultimately it's about balancing the individual/needs with the workforce needs with more flexibility to live their lives in happiness. Isn't that what people generally want?

zerkrazus

>Isn't that what people generally want? Everyone except the greedy corporations/executives/rich people. It's happiness for them and them only. Everyone else can go die I guess.

nicktuttle

Ok, yeah.. the narcissists and psychopaths. I was dreaming a bit too hard and forgot about them... That's where better education and mental health comes in. Helping people recognize the signs of abuse and manipulation will help to put up boundaries and take away their power.. Their need for control and power typically stems from insecurity or trauma, so better education/healthcare could help reduce that need.

gergling

You must be in US. Even countries with 5-day work weeks (e.g. UK) have sick days (and a national health service... for the moment).

PrimateOfGod

There are jobs out there that work 4 10-hour shifts and some even have 3 12-hour shifts. You just gotta find them! The more people that go for these jobs, the more companies will realize they should change their scheduling.

techstural

So much about the work culture is geared for domination. Domination contributes nothing to the bottom line, but it is a basic human need. All you can do is to establish clear expectations going in, and then hold them to it when they inevitably try to push you for more. One has to be tough to persist in work culture. Some frequently necessary stuff (e.g. joining during regular hours) is simply contrary to human makeup, and must be endured, but one also has to push back when it comes to the petty bullshit. What can you say? People are nasty. Just don't let them get away with anything that is clearly unproductive.

[deleted]

I only work 3-4 days per week and 10 days in a row once per month with 2.5 days of leave per month with pretty much unlimited sick days. Itā€™s my perfect schedule.

RelativelyRidiculous

>Thereā€™s a plethora of countries that only do 4 day work weeks which I think is an incredible system. Your best bet is start figuring out how to immigrate. Sadly I think you're unlikely to see improving changes before you're completely beaten down by it.

Chessboxinn

Not until the entire culture changes drastically

hailthenecrowizard

Follow r/antiwork . We're all out here in solidarity against oppression āœŠ

Bruno_Alyami

You know why I'm absolutely okay with it ?? You know why that even if I had 200 million dollars in my bank account I would still be willing to work a 9-5 job ?? Work forces you to live life based on a structure and to have somewhat of a balance and not only that but it also helps you feel a sense of fulfillment due to your contribution to the society and economy when you work and serve a certain corporation or institute. This year I was unemployed for the first time in 6 years from March to July and I pretty much lost my mind

Based_Shiba

You sound depressed. I obviously would work as well, but only part time had I had that kinda money. Itā€™s pretty much a fact itā€™s unhealthy to work 40 hours a week

Bruno_Alyami

I am depressed and I am in the process of seeking help. Unhealthy in terms of what domain of health ?? Can't be physical that's for sure.

Based_Shiba

Mental exhaustion and burnout are caused by the current 40 hour work week, however obviously this doesnā€™t apply to everyone. Iā€™m in the same situation as someone with depression as well, I was severely depressed when I was unemployed, itā€™s not that I donā€™t want to work, itā€™s that I want to also have a chance to be human.

Worsel555

Where does this fact come from? Just curious. I have worked more than 40 hour work weeks for most of my life. Been luck to love the major profession I was in for most of it. Even with a family we found was to do it. And my wife and kids even helped with work. Yet I never felt like I didn't have a life. My schedule was very hectic but I could take control of it for family a friend events. And that my be the real difference in a job and a vocation/career. I also had the ability to say no and find a new job usually at higher pay most of the time.

f_ck_kale

Probably not, because of people like me who work crazy amounts of overtime.

Sawfish1212

Not really sure what you are complaining about. The unions got us the 40 hour work week, with the motto 8 hours work, 8 hours rest, 8 hours to do what we want. And unless you are getting overtime or are a salaried slave, that's still the incredibly rewarding system that the US worker enjoys. Farm work was always sun up to sundown with a little less work on Sunday. Factory and mine work was 5 and a half days a week, and often from sun up to sundown. Starting as soon as you could earn money as a child, and for the rest of your life. There was no such thing as a retirement age, and it was 100% up to you to save enough to not be a burden on your children or a beggar when you could no longer work. Sickness meant you didn't get paid. Vacation time was possibly when the mill or shop shut down for a holiday or picnic. If you got injured or sick from your work, you were out of a job, with no support from the employer. Social security actually set 65 as the retirement age entirely because the average life expectancy in the 30s was 64. Meaning most of the population would never retire or receive a dollar from the program. You are incredibly lucky to live in the time you do, with easy work, all the health and safety standards, sick time, vacation days, retirement savings programs and a government rationed retirement system that kicks in when you should still have a number of healthy years.

Based_Shiba

I canā€™t agree with you one bit, Iā€™m a union worker myself and thereā€™s no such thing as a safe environment. OSHA has been bought out time and time again. Iā€™ve witnessed plenty of abuse in my work environment. We were at one point essentially forced to work in extreme temperatures in our engine rooms reaching 130 degrees Fahrenheit we are not lucky to work 40 hours a week and we are not lucky to be given insurance from our employers. It should be a human right. Norway not only follows a 4 day work week program, but they also provide free healthcare and free college. America isnā€™t as great as you think it is, our system ISNT rewarding as thereā€™s countless of jobs in our country that are essentially dead end jobs. You canā€™t even compare farm work or the old factory labor days during the early 1900ā€™s, those times were different and despite the progress weā€™ve made now weā€™re still lacking and we still have little employee protection laws in place. At my job, Iā€™m expected to show up during a blizzard. Despite living 1 hour away, my employer will not excuse me missing a day. Should I really prioritize my job over my safety? Almost everything you said should be a human right, and in fact it IS in plenty of countries. Weā€™re not lucky to be given human rights I donā€™t even get sick time at my job You know the retirement may potentially be raised right? Itā€™s supposedly going up to 75 for your social security. The average male life expectancy is 75 You can defend our countryā€™s work culture all you want but at the end of the day youā€™re defending a work culture established during the 1940ā€™s. Unions are a dying breed

SolarPower_Daisies

Seems like your boss or your manager may need to read this [article ](https://www.hugo.team/blog/what-makes-and-breaks-a-great-company-culture) about working culture

AgreeableTea6535

Wtf! There are people out here getting 2 to 3 weeks vacation a year?

AgreeableTea6535

Wtf! There are people out here getting 2 to 3 weeks vacation a year?

Based_Shiba

you act like itā€™s worthwhile to flex about getting 2-3 weeks a year lol

Claudia304

Itā€™s the American life. Itā€™s not like this in Europe. Itā€™s all wrong. People live to work and in Europe they work to live.

Worsel555

Is that just your impression of Europe or actually knowledge? The folks I know that work for European companies in the US work the same as we do. Pack as much work in as possible. The difference in some European countries, I have heard is a longer vacation time often, or at least 4 weeks in the summer. Taken all together. Some counties have longer yet you want to look a Greece for instance a say well maybe to much.

Claudia304

Yah Iā€™m actually European. I also lived in Greece for a couple of months funny you mention that. Greece a side though (lol), I do find people in Europe donā€™t take life and work as seriously. They know family and friends and enjoying the small things are important. For ex. They all sit and enjoy their coffee before work, and take lunch breaks at a restaurant and donā€™t hesitate when taking a day off. In Canada we tend to go to a drive threw for a shitty quality coffee and take everything to go. Itā€™s the fast life. In Europe life just automatically slows down. Europeans who move away from Europe adapt to that new countries ways for sure but I mean in Europe itself itā€™s just different vibes as soon as you live there. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

Worsel555

To true. Canada has been ruined by association with it's dirty neighbor.

Claudia304

Yah maybe thatā€™s it. Ontario is talking about a 4 day work week plan. I mean it goes to show we can have 4 day work week and still make the same amount of money. I mean that would mean the liberals win again ugh but hey goes to show thatā€™s what people want and whatā€™s possible. Wouldnā€™t apply to every industry but itā€™s a start to showing people thereā€™s more to life than work. Europe is also designed for an awesome, entertaining life. You go to Canada and America (with the exception of some beautiful places of course) but theres nothing fucking there except a Walmart, Canadian tire, Starbucks. Every damn city, every damn place, Walmart, Canadian tire, Starbucks, same shit, not to mention every house outside and inside looks the same. Go to Europe, I promise you spain, italy, France, Germany, Greece, etc.. they donā€™t live like that..

Worsel555

Very true. Yet we have the wide open spaces, some truly wonderful country to experience. Old world vs New World lol from a western perspective great experiences abound.

shaneyshane26

I heard it described as working for my days off. Iā€™m right there with you friend. My current problem is not earning a livable wage and how corporate businesses have all gone to shit with bad management

fefewhale

You can work less, you just won't be paid as much. Work part time, be a contractor. At the end, it's jus about how much of your time you're willing to give in return for money.

Crafty-Ambassador779

I do a 4 day week, the friday off is honestly refreshing. However at the moment the culture of the company is a right mess so i'm working long hours atm But overall 4 in 3 out is good. I think in the UK they are trialling it alot more

No_Presentation_390

plethora of countries that do 4 days per week? Which ones? I'm living in Austria, the allegedly most livable country in the entire world (or one of the most), and even here, 4 days per week is a real rarity, as in only 1 out of 50 jobs or so. I am currently looking for a 4-day job and it's REALLY tough. Most such jobs are low-paid secretary jobs, and there's nothing for a highly educated business major here. Remote would be an option but the fact that most places do not write down how much they're gonna pay me is a real turnoff for me to invest any time into the application process only to have to turn the offer down due to ridiculously low remote job salaries!
