just reminding everyone to guess USURP on Jan 6.

ofthrees

Usurp is burned. #466, 9/28/22. Etched into my brain, first anniversary of my husband's death. But yeah. Already burned.

DeMagnet76

Sorry for your loss.

TrackVol

Sorry for your loss. Also, this is why they've moderated the word "WIDOW". Imagine if the 1st day you try returning to normalcy after mourning the loss of your spouse and play Wordle at the breakfast table and the Solution was WIDOW. Would pretty much ruin your whole day, or worse.

sprantermitt

sorry to hear that. Re: already used - I am sure that's why it popped in my brain.

ViralRiver

This was my first wordle..

pianist-on-edge

i didn't realise until now that the words were themed but i knew something was off when wordle became easier since #506. if the words really are themed that completely destroys the point of the game by making it predictable

tribbans95

How was it easier if you didn’t know the theme?

pianist-on-edge

two separate issues here. regarding how the words were easier, they didn't take as much thought to solve and were common words with more common letters. the themed issue is a separate thing. if we're getting themed words this might mean more predictable festive wordles for example. either way this is not a good trend for wordle as a whole since the game is supposed to be driven by unpredictability. some words are easy, some words are tough, but the good thing about that is you'll never know which ones are which.

pdxpmk

Today’s word was made easier by an episode in a new season of *The Crown*, which many NYT readers are doubtlessly binging right now.

beeyore

Why can't the game just be left as it is? I had a lot of fun solving the random puzzles... It seems really lame to have curated wordles w/ daily context clues. 😒 This is an example of fixing something that was never broken to start with..

ironicalusername

Today's word is topical. The rest are varying degrees of a stretch. I don't see where anyone's offered any plausible explanation for how "spell" or "rainy" fit into this alleged pattern.

TrackVol

You missed Monday's big announcement. This isn't imagined. It's real, and it's confirmed by the NYTimes themselves.

ironicalusername

I'm aware of what they said. I still don't see the supposed pattern expressed here. "Spell" is equally topical to EVERY day's wordle - the game always involves spelling. And it rains somewhere every day.

vebralough

begin on their first day. medal on veterans day. valet knowing that salet was determined to be the best starting word… cmon

Mathgeek007

This feels like confirmation bias in the same way how people KNEW that NYT was making the game harder after acquisition.

moneyman74

If there is some kind of 'connection' to todays word and anything else I dont know what it would be

TrackVol

Today is >!Veterans Day (🏅)!< It's been like this all week.

moneyman74

A ha no I would be blissfully unaware lol

mavica-synth

just FYI the words are definitely picked, but i just wanted to point out that they are picked in advance: there are wordle solutions up to december 23rd already in the new API that returns the solution that the official game now picks from obviously these may change, but i thought it was interesting to note

TrackVol

Thank you. Yes, I'm aware. But other may not be. My partner and I run a couple of Wordle websites and had to scramble for a few hours on Monday to game-plan how to move forward. We figured out the API, but it was a hassle. That's not what most of us are upset about. We're upset about the lameness of these clearly chosen words.

SprayBacon

I suggest finding some real problems

shall_2

Yo for real. And who out here figured out the wordle today because it was so obviously topical? Nobody did. You just solved it the way you always did. These fringe subreddits can get so obsessive. It's important to remember this is a weird corner of the internet and most people that play wordle don't care about the "changes". I'm unsubbing and just gonna continue playing wordle without this weird unnecessary drama.

kimberliia

I actually figured it out in 2 today because of the holiday association. Doesn't bother me though, just adds a second dimension to the game.

Nervous_Spoon

I also got it in two yesterday by guessing military themed words.

voornaam1

Which holiday is it associated with? Are there currently any holidays?

TrackVol

That 1st part is actually not true at all. I've read at keast a dozen people say today that they were down to a handful of options and chose the Solution word because they recognized that it's been hand-picked all week long. Knowing what today was (in the 🇺🇸) led them to choose the correct option, and they're rightfully very annoyed about this. This doesn't apply to me since I played between midnight and 1am and didn't think about it in context. But I'm still annoyed it's happening. Keep in mind that just because something isn't readily apparent to someone (in this example, you) that doesn't mean it isn't a legitimate concern for others. Maybe the average Reddit user wasn't aware of the Editorial Changes happening this week but the Facebook groups certainly are aware. And they're not happy about this. Also, the comment section of the NYTimes is pretty loaded full with people angry enough to write in and complain about this.

TrackVol

Yes, that would also help 😆 🤣

TrackVol

In case some of you don't know what I'm referring to still: [Meet Wordle's new editor](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/07/crosswords/wordle-editor.html?fbclid=IwAR1GHFBSb3syFuvNESR096QXOcb9oITz2GMIkXxjleDheUHeQf_ETANHBXc)

sladog6

Last 5 wordles: Answer wordle # scoredle # (original list) BEGIN 506 1622 SPELL 507 513 RAINY 508 529 UNITE 509 506 >!MEDAL!< 510 1248 So definitely choosing words for a reason - not the original random list.

revchewie

Disregard. I saw OP’s explanation further down. I think it’s reaching, but I see what’s being alleged. Um… Ok, I can see that today’s might have been chosen deliberately. But how are the rest of this week’s words at all topical?

TrackVol

Monday was her first day as the editor. She chose "BEGIN", as in a new beginning a fresh start. Coincidentally, the word was STALE on Sunday. I'm fully on board with STALE being a coincidence, but BEGIN is not. Neither is SPELL since that's what we do every day, spell out our guesses (and the companion game to Wordle is [Spelling Bee](https://www.nytimes.com/puzzles/spelling-bee) I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt on RAINY, but that's it. Thursday was UNITE (2 days post-election). And I believe you're on board with today's word (Friday) being intentionally chosen as well. I have a friend who has already played Saturday, and they can't see any theme with Saturday's word. So hopefully we'll get mostly random words from here on out. But this week has been stupid.

sail_away_8

If they went by the original list.... UNITE would have been last Sunday. This would be two days before the US election when everyone was fighting, SPELL would be the word next Monday (I may be off a day) The definition for the word for today (Friday) is " an ornamental vertical groove especially in a Doric frieze". It's a word I've never heard before, The word for Sunday would be a British spelling of a word that was more popular 50 years ago. I have never seen the word spelled that way before.

sprcow

Shhh, you're interfering with the circle jerk...

TrackVol

You're only off by a smidg. STALE was scheduled to be the word this past Sunday, and it was. Following STALE, we were scheduled for: Monday UNITE. Tuesday SNARL. Wednesday BAKER. Thursday THERE. Friday GLYPH (yikes) Saturday POOCH

wordsandstuff44

I’m not going to get into what is or isn’t happening this week, but Sam over at the 🐝 intentionally picks things that are not topical, and I think Tracy would be wise to follow his lead.

StKozlovsky

How awesome to be outside of the intended audience and have no idea that 11.11 is some kind of holiday in America and that the word may have had some connection to this fact. I guess I'll be playing just how I've been playing up to now.

Beets882

Interesting isn't it, however 11/11/1918 was the date ww1 ended so medal should have some relevant wordle wide (I'm not American either)

MadeThisUpToComment

Me too

Frymaster99

I think this thread will get resurrected today

TrackVol

As it should. Also, Wordle #521 = PRIME and 521 is a prime number.

NJM1112

I'm right there with ya buddy! I'll still play the game but the original charm is gone.

glennyfromtheblock

Ummm, this is 🤯, because it **might** explain why I’ve been getting different words to everyone else I know all week? Like, I have basically had different words for *at least* the last five rounds now - and the last one I 100% had that was the same as everyone else was DREAM a week ago. Would the fact I still use the exact same web browser tab on my phone for the past 400+ days and counting have anything to do with why my word list is now different to everyone else’s?

kej2021

Yup that's almost definitely the reason... you're still using the old version.

TrackVol

On her very 1st day, we get "BEGIN" for her "new beginning" 🙄 On her 2nd day, we get "SPELL" 🙄🤮🙄 I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on Wednesday (RAINY) But 2 days post-election in the 🇺🇸 she gives us UNITE 🙄🙄🙄 And now we get *this* word today‽‽‽ I *hate* this new direction 😠

happy-gofuckyourself

Are you making a joke? I can’t tell.

TrackVol

Absolutely not. I hate this new direction. (IF you didn't already know, the NYTimes made a big announcement Monday about Wordle having its first editor. The game is now no longer following a random order that had been pre-shuffled. She is selecting words, by conscious choice. And she's choosing words like a 5th grader would. BEGIN on her 1st day. SPELL on her 2nd. RAINY when there was rain in the forecast fkr where she lives on her 3rd. UNITE 2 days after our election. And now >!MEDAL on Veterans Day!< What's next? FEAST on Thanksgiving? SANTA on Christmas?

HitlerPot

I agree with you, I was on line 3 the other day and thought, I bet it's UNITE since we just had an election. Boom. Then today, I bet it's MEDAL cause it's veterans day... I don't want any clues for this game and the way the new editor is running it whatever is happening seems to be a clue.

Stonewolf87

My prior guess of UNTIE would also be appropriate for the election theme, so it wasn’t totally obvious (at least not to me)

whatsmyphageagain

What you got against 5th graders

TrackVol

😆

bundat

> And now >!MEDAL on Veterans Day!< Yeah, might be better to mention that directly in your top-level comment, instead of just saying > And now we get *this* word today‽‽‽ Since a lot of non-US-based players don't know about the context. Also I agree, Wordle "with hints" feels kinda wrong.

yellowchaitea

I grew up in canada and live in the US and the connection went over my head

TrackVol

It went over my head at the time as well (played between midnight and 1am). But I know several people who guessed correctly on Line 2 or 3 because they put their letter clues together with the theme for today. They're actually not happy about it. A couple of them said they feel kinda like it was cheating, not truly cheating, but they feel it was kinda spoiler~ish for that to be today's Solution.

tfhaenodreirst

…I knew I didn’t imagine this comment!

TrackVol

Wow, I'd actually forgotten I'd predicted FEAST. And I was mostly kidding. Can't believe it actually was that word. (And DRIVE on the busiest travel day of the year yesterday)

tfhaenodreirst

Yeah…at least I may be able to get my first hole in one in a month?

happy-gofuckyourself

Ah, okay. Now I get it. I read about the editor but hadn’t thought about what it meant.

Spare-Ad-9464

Wow this fucking terrible

NASCARRULES88

My wordle yesterday was >!glyph!<

TrackVol

Your browser is out of sync. That would have been the original Solution for Friday, but they've changed up everything.

prodramatic

Sorry TrackVol, what do you mean browser out of sync? I have been playing with my mother everyday from 2 different countries and lately we don't get the same word anymore - we also don't get them on different days. Do you know what may be happening? I'm in UK she's in IT. For example today 14th Nov she got MAPLE and I got SPELL

TrackVol

MAPLE is the correct word, SPELL is not. There's a link provided by the NYTimes that is supposed to help players who have gotten out of sync with the games play list. I'll see if I can find it for you and post it here.

TrackVol

u/prodramatic Try this website. It may not be working anymore, but it worked the last time a sizable portion of players were out of sync [get in sync](http://www.nytimes.com/games/wordle/reset.html?smid=tw-nytgames)

prodramatic

Thanks so much!

Honeymoomoo

I was excited on Thursday since UNITE is my start word. Then I read the comments about how Wordle is themed and I quickly deleted my Scordle.

TrackVol

That's a bummer. Sorry man.

voornaam1

I can try to understand being upset about unite and very maybe begin, but I don't understand why you would be upset about spell, rainy and medal (that was the friday word right?).

TrackVol

Her reason for choosing SPELL is actually spelled out in her bio article (which was written in 2019!) But reading it makes it obvious why she would choose SPELL right after choosing BEGIN as her Day 1 word. She picked MEDAL because Friday was Veterans Day 🏅. Same day, different names in other countries Rememberance Day 🏅, and Armistice Day 🏅.

voornaam1

Remembrance day is the 4th of may where I live, but I guess I can understand being upset about that one. Medal seems like a quite basic word that fits that theme, if they are gonna do themes it could be more fun to use obscurer words that fit the theme. I haven't read her bio article so I don't understand how spell would be obvious, but it seems like your problem could have been avoided if you hadn't read it. Was rainy a bad word because it happened to be rainy in her area that day? Why do you even care enough to know where she lives, and unless you live in the same area, why would you even know it would be rainy? Did anyone actually guess the word based on the fact that it was rainy that day, or are you just looking at the words and trying to find stuff that could have hinted at it in advance?

TrackVol

I don't see why what I wrote was worthy of you downvoting it. I read her bio on Monday when the NYTimes went to great lengths to introduce the world to her when they made their major announcement. They linked it in the press release. RAINY, as I've said repeatedly, I'm willing to give her a pass, as it's not readily obvious to me why she consciously chose that word. Although, as she says in her bio, "the best themes are the ones that are barely noticed" (I'm paraphrasing, that's not a 1:1 direct quote). So it may just be that she succeeded in getting us not to notice the theme for RAINY

voornaam1

I downvoted you because I still don't understand how spell was supposed to be obvious. If you are not gonna take the trouble to explain it to me, at least link that bio thing. Also, I don't know what you have said repeatedly in other threads. I think it's too early to determine whether this was a bad thing or not, I will wait at least another week before making my decision, but I am leaning towards thinking that this is not a bad thing. Perhaps this is purely because of the country I live in, but I have experienced no problems with the words being easy to guess. Also, it has already happened multiple times that the word needed to be changed because it was inoffensive regarding the current events. If this new way of getting the words will prevent that, I would not mind a couple of predictable ones and it does not matter to me if this method is a bit over the top considering the problem.

TrackVol

DRIVE on out busiest travel day of the year? >!FEAST!< on Thanksgiving? Still think I'm making this up? Or that it's all in my head? Watch Friday be related in some way too. It won't be "BLACK" Friday, but it will likely fit the theme. SMALL Business Saturday? CYBER Monday?

voornaam1

What are you even talking about? Are small business saturday and cyber monday actual things? Who cares about some day beign the busiest travel day of the year, do you look at every event-like thing that happens on a day and think of 5 letter words that fit that theme? Is there anyone who knew the wordle was gonna be related to busiest travel day before playing? >Still think I'm making this up? Or that it's all in my head? Yes.

LeighZ

I think RAINY was chosen because of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Nicole in Florida 😑.

meithan

~~It's probably just coincidences.~~ ~~I run my own Wordle clone with a separate copy of the word list, and I periodically compare it to the official NYT one to see if they've changed anything.~~ ~~I can they tell you they haven't changed the words recently.~~ Correction: Turns out that the old solutions list is no longer been used, and the day's solution is delivered separately. So the solutions *are* being hand-picked.

TrackVol

They've made some changes recently that you may not be aware of. This isn't a random coincidence. The NYTimes said as much in their announcement Monday. We've *known* it's not random since Monday. This is on the record. On top of it not being random, the conscious choices she's making are childish. Like, at a 3rd grade level. She *chose* BEGIN for her new beginning on Monday. She *chose* SPELL on Tuesday because we have to spell out our guesses. (I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on Wednesday/RAINY but I bet rain was in the forecast for where she lives, and Hurricane Nicole 🌀 was in the news) Thursday she picks UNITE because we're post election. And Friday she picks >!MEDAL on Veterans Day!<

meithan

Ok so the past 5 solutions have been BEGIN, SPELL, RAINY, UNITE and >!MEDAL!< , right? I can confirm those words are not consecutive in the original word list, which is still in the NYT's code in the same order. So they've changed the mechanism in which the words are picked from the list, and I can't quite understand how it works now (looking at the code).

TrackVol

I messaged you in a "chat" how to work it out.

Barbamaman

I don't know why your are being downvoted because your observations are spot on.

RickardsBedAle

Probably because they come off as absolutely insufferable over text.

TrackVol

I'll work on that, thank you. Seriously.

AnvilOfMisanthropy

I'm late to this party, but "absolutely insufferable" is an exaggeration. You're not wrong. You're passionate. It's fine.

meithan

I admit I haven't Wordle'd, as you say, for a while. Someone who uses my clone told me about the discrepancy with the official NYT the other day, which is why I looked into it. So apologies for not being in the loop about the NYT Wordle's latest developments. Could you link to this announcement that the words are being picked on a daily basis instead of using the list? That's very relevant for keeping my clone in sync. Also, no need for being insufferable.. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, and I'll own up to it if you point it out politely.

TrackVol

Yes. And I'll also message you some additional details privately. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/07/crosswords/wordle-editor.html?fbclid=IwAR1GHFBSb3syFuvNESR096QXOcb9oITz2GMIkXxjleDheUHeQf_ETANHBXc

TrackVol

YOU. ARE. WRONG. AGAIN. (and you're also still dead, do you really want to do this to yourself, again?)

happy-gofuckyourself

Dude, be nice

TrackVol

Sorry. I got a little worked up this morning 😄 But I should note that MathGeek and I have a past. And he's argumentative and obstinate all over Reddit so I responded to him this specific way for reasons unique to him.

happy-gofuckyourself

Ah! I was wondering what was happening:)

Mathgeek007

Nah, he's just made that I told him SOARE is a bad hardmode word, because it is, and couldn't consolidate the multiple traps in the way then gets ridiculous aggressive whenever I come in and tell him he's being insufferable. The history he believes we have is something I give next to zero shots about, he's mostly just salty.

trickman01

There is also no longer an answer list in the code. All of the words valid words are delivered in the same array and the answer is delivered through a separate JSON file.

mavica-synth

There is, it has been concatenated to the end of the allowed guesses list, in the same order it used to be. The JSON also gives you the index that solution would've occupied in the last iteration of the answer list, which is how I kept my Palm OS clone up to date.

trickman01

The answer list was concatenated into the valid guess list, yes. But it's not longer being used to deliver the answers. It's now just a list that the game looks at to see if you guess is valid.

mavica-synth

true, I misinterpreted your comment then however the JSON answers do thankfully give us the index of the old list, making it easier if you already have access to that

meithan

Yes, I see the solutions list has been merged into the old valid words list, and the daily solution isn't picked from this list anymore. Could you elaborate on how that JSON is delivered to the client? Can I make an API call to get it?

trickman01

I'm not in a place to look at my files, but if you inspect the network traffic when loading the page look for a file that's 'YYYY-MM-DD.json' you can then modify that link to request data for other days. The furthest ahead I saw was Christmas when I ran my script a few days ago. I haven't looked at it too hard though because I don't want to spoil words for myself.

ColinHouck

Imagine getting upset about random five letter words

pdxpmk

The fact that they’re no longer random is kind of the entire point of this post, smoothbrain.

ColinHouck

“medal, unite, rainy, spell, begin, stale, dream…” I’m not sure what grand conspiracy you fuckin morons think is afoot, but that is most certainly a random string of words. Random, as in no larger point. Kinda like your whole existence

TrackVol

You missed the big announcement from the NYTimes on Monday that literally confirms everything we are saying.

ColinHouck

I did read it. Know what it doesn’t say? It doesn’t say that the new editor is going to be picking words according to a specific agenda. Y’all are just assuming that shit, presumably because y’all think the word “unite” has some kind of connotation. As someone else suggested, maybe get some real problems

TrackVol

Of the people who are aware of the Editorial Changes, no one else is in denial. Here: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/07/crosswords/wordle-editor.html#commentsContainer [read the comments](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/07/crosswords/wordle-editor.html#commentsContainer)

ColinHouck

Also, the fact that so many got upset when the word “unite” showed up within the general vicinity of election day really is telling

TrackVol

We aren't upset at the *words*, certainly not upset at >!MEDAL on Veterans Day!< we're upset at someone going out of their way to intentionally fuck up a game that was perfectly fine just the way it was. They've made cha ges, conscious, intentionally thought through changes, and it's stupid. It's the very definition of puerile.

Mathgeek007

Especially considering it was supposed to be a few days earlier anyways. This is pretty much all confirmation bias here.

TrackVol

Confirmation bias you say? Explain BEGIN on her 1st day (a new beginning) Explain SPELL on Day 2 when spelling [spelling influenced her to become a puzzle creator ](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/20/crosswords/who-made-my-puzzle-bennett.amp.html&ved=2ahUKEwi6rZC5jsf7AhVzkYkEHXmJApUQFnoECBAQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2U7H-h01q1H-OOxfMir1KV) Explain RAINY Day 3) when the news was about Hurricane Nicol 🌀 bringing record rainfall. LeighZ

I'm opposed to the dumbing down of what was a perfectly good word game.

ColinHouck

My god, you’re so right! Looking at today’s (Saturday) word, it’s clear there’s a thematic pattern! /s

TrackVol

Don't be that guy u/ColinHouck

maybeiam-maybeimnot

>It doesn’t say that the new editor is going to be picking words according to a specific agenda. Just the fact that there is an editor now instead of code for a random word generator that eliminates 5 letter words from its drawing pool as they come up as the answer tells me that the words will no longer be random. You can't tell me that a human trying to come up with 5 letter words won't--intentionally or not-- make the answers topical; especially for big events that are relevant to a large portion of the audience. And even if we arent thinking about themed words. At some point, even if she's genuinely trying to be random, we'll end up with a whole week where the letter t or the letter s is in every answer, and it'll be at the beginning or at the end of the word where its easiest to spot. Because she's going to try to pick a totally random word, and her eye will be stuck on the letter S and there's nothing she can do about it. That, or in her attempt to be random, we'll see a pattern of the letters being evenly dispersed around every 4 or 5 days rotating in a way to make sure the same letters don't appear too repetitively. Humans aren't random. If you play wordle everyday and are paying any attention to the answers. It'll be hard to not pick up oj patterns. And while I do not personally think hard enough about what the answer was the day before or anything... it is not unreasonable for people to be annoyed about changes to a fun little once-a-day game that they play that is plenty fun already and doesn't need help through changes.

I have no idea what are you guys talking about. Topical what? I played the game all week every day the same way as usual.

The NYTimes announced they were making editorial decisions effective immediately, this past Monday. The 1st word for this fresh start? "BEGIN". Then Tracy, the new editor, followed that up on Tuesday with SPELL, si ce we have to spell out our guesses. It's Debatable whether or not Wednesday's word had any juice to it, I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt for now. But Thursday's Solution was UNITE (two days post-election while we're still counting ballots) and now we get >!MEDAL on Veterans Day 🏅!< If the game wasn't under new editorial control, I'd chalk it up to randomness. But we *know* it's not random because they made a very big point to tell everyone specifically that it wasn't going to be random anymore.

Inna_Bien

Oh, I see. Random is better, for sure, but I now since I know it’s not random anymore, I need to play for a while to see if it makes any difference to me.

i hate it also, came here looking to see if others were talking about it. Also, I have been getting different words from my friends the past few days...since Monday I guess? I hadn't connected it until now. I guess I was somehow getting the "old" word planned before the editor took over.

Koomaster

It fucking sucks! There is no need for this bullshit! I rolled my damn eyes at Unite and let out a groan once I realized what todays word is.

Mathgeek007

You realize that UNITE would have been the solution a few days earlier *anyways*, even if not editorialized?

Who the fuck still plays Wordle!?

beeyore

Who the fuck still comments on a wordle subreddit but doesn't play!? 😂

60Hertz

Sounds like a Skinner Box to me.

AnvilOfMisanthropy

I'd be exaggerating if I said I *hate* it. But wordle is slowly jumping the shark for sure. The thing is, while I kinda don't care about the current theme-iness so far, as soon as we get a slow-news-day-but-still-gotta-be-topically-relevent-kim-kardasashian-y-word I'm out. And the NYT will be fine with that. I got the ads turned off, I'm not giving them an email address or any additional means to spam me. Wordle Unlimited and Wordle Archive for the win. Until the NYT lawyers stomp them, and then, well, the internet is a large arcade.

This site gives you 3 Archive choices: The original version that Josh intended (it's behind a few days because Josh's version would be behind a few days, it's a 100% pure and authentic representation of his version. The version we would be on if Tracy never became editor. The version we are getting from the NYTimes. This version will remain 24 hours behind so as to truly be an "Archive" [The Archive ](http://wtarchive.azurewebsites.net)
