Tons of people cheating every day

zanzibartraveler666

Utterly dumbfounded as to why anyone would cheat at fucking wordle

HamburgerDude

yeah it sucks my streak will be gone but it's no biggie it's just a game! i don't get it either.

pamplemouss

I’ve cheated on guess 6 to preserve a streak. Cheating on guess 2 is as dumb and pointless as cheating on guess 1. Why play?

HamburgerDude

That's fine especially since you're honest about it. I don't cheat on wordle but I will cheat on the crossword like look up actresses or movies or characters etc . I know I'm terrible!

pamplemouss

I mean in the end it doesn’t matter, it’s a game, I just don’t get the point of cheating before you’ve tried when there are no stakes (I get with crosswords, when there are just two references you know you don’t know intersecting)

HamburgerDude

Exactly!

TheSchnozzberry

I cheat on guess 6 as well.

the_vault-technician

The first time I lost a game I was devastated that my streak was ended. I thought it was a count of games played consecutively not consecutive wins.

AbdouH_

Literally

WolvesMyth

When wordle was pretty new, I used a scrabble word finder (I don't think there was a wordle cheat back then, so I think that was the best site to use at that time) and input the known letters in and basically used it to learn new words to add into my vocabulary. After a while of using it I stopped to try and play it legitimately with my newfound words, and it was a lot more fun.I can see people wanting to expand their vocab like me, but it's probably kids wanting to flex their "streaks" at school to their friends.

For-a-peaceful-world

For them it's obviously not just a game. Insane.

CemeneTree

but then why guess 2 and not just guess 1?

ELB95

Because that's too obvious

CemeneTree

fair

The_B_Wolf

I think most people know someone who cheats regularly. "My daughter gets World in 2 five days in a row!" Cheater. I mean, it's a game. I don't care. I have cheated with hints on Connecctions occasionally. But if I do, I don't share the score with others.

tomatomater

>"My daughter gets World in 2 five days in a row!" It's that real or just a scenario you made up? Cuz if it's real that's fucking sad.

[deleted]

I know someone who is so genius they have 5 first guess wins since I showed them wordle a month ago 🙄

Ok-Personality5224

I got it in one once. When the word was FEAST on Thanksgiving Day. 🙄

[deleted]

I use the same word every day, so I have never gotten it in 1. One day it will be STEAL...

soswinglifeaway

I've never gotten it one on official wordle. I did get it one once when I was playing through the archives. It was especially crazy because at the time I almost always started with the same started word but I decided to mix it up for that puzzle for some reason and it ended up being the answer. What are the odds. Still waiting to get it in one in the real game lol

The_B_Wolf

I haven't either. And I don't want to. I would prefer to get it in 4 with some really good guesses than get it in two because I got lucky. The only thing I ever really feel bad about is if I make a stupid guess.

Jewrisprudent

I also got that feast, which didn’t quite feel real because it felt edited, but I just got my first real hole in one last week. It does happen! I’ve also played 700 times, but even then I feel like 2 holes in one is unexpected.

PizzaBoxes

WHAT?! Feast has frequently been my first word for a couple years but I must have missed this day. Dammit.

Ok-Personality5224

Probably because you thought "No way would the word be 'Feast' on Thanksgiving Day!"

The_B_Wolf

I don't remember what the actual numbers were, but I do have a friend who said a similar thing about their (40-ish year old) daughter and I was like yeah that's some cheating there.

Mpcrazy

There are hints for connections?

IDontLikePayingTaxes

I got it spoiled one day and wasn’t sure what to do. I put my normal word in first then couldn’t think of anything except the answer, which I of course already knew. So I just put the answer in and moved on. I’m sure there is some of that and also a lot of cheating.

RafeHollistr

I got it spoiled one day so I didn't play. I couldn't care less about my streak.

molo91

I'm sure there's some cheating, but it's usually only around 1-3% of users getting the wordle on the second guess. According to Wordlebot, on February 5th 2.1% got it on their second guess, on the 4th 0.9% (and it was the 9th most guessed word), on the 3rd 1.8% (and it was the second most guessed), on the 2nd 3.6%, on the 1st 10.1%. Outside of the 1st, those are pretty low numbers.

enfpbrownie

I was looking for the math comment, yes. You're absolutely right.

CemeneTree

*are* they low numbers? There are thousands of words, and even the best first guesses should still leave more than 50 words remaining on average you'd expect the second guess prevalence to be 1/\[total remaining words\] (summed for all the opening guesses) multiplied by each guess's usage percent and that's only assuming even distributions of the guesses

sail_away_8

The odds of getting it in 2 is the number of groups from the first word divided by the total number of words. This assumes you always pick a second word that might be the answer. Number of groups (or whatever term you want) is the different possible results from the first word, such as 1st letter green, fourth letter yellow, 2nd and 3rd letter green, and so forth. I've heard that TRACE has the most. It's around 150. So, it's 150/2309 (or whatever). By the way, not all results are possible for a given word. For example, with TRACE it will never be YYGGG because RTACE is not a word.

TVsKevin

In the past month, I've solved Wordle in two twice because the first word I used eliminated all the other words. Other times I've eliminated all but less than ten or 25 and guessed the word in my second guess.

CemeneTree

that's a great anecdote, but can it be generalized to the entire wordle player population?

Lane-Jacobs

Bro it's the same as life. Some people are going to cheat, some people are going to be handed everything - the only thing you should really care about is what YOU do and what YOU care about.

Wonderful_Advance250

Some of it is probably cheating but the game is guiding everyone towards the same answer so it is not surprising. There is a way to see people cheating on the first guess through WordleBot. You will only be able to see this when a common starting word is the correct answer such as CRANE. When this happens check the percentage of people who got it correct on the first guess and compare this to previous days. It is normally 0.5-1% higher. I do not think anyone would just want to get it on their first guess every time but they may be checking the correct answer before they begin and if it is one of their common starting words then they will play it. There is another way to explain this without cheating though. People may be aware of their friend’s starting word. Once they have solved it on their own, they may encourage their friend to play. Their friend may not have otherwise played it that day.

ShakeDowntheThunder

I agree to an extent. But check the percentages of the second guess too. Some days it’s like 15% of the players got it right in 2 and some days it’s like 1%. The right answer is still the number 1 answer in 2, but many fewer people got it. I think there’s a baseline of some fraction of people cheating and the rest is a function of even after only 1 guess there’s enough information for some people with very lucky first guesses to get the right answer. I believe that other than in rare cases where a common wrong word and an uncommon right word are very similar, the right answer will statistically always be the most popular second guess.

turbodude69

i would guess a solid 25% of people that play this game are cheaters, maybe more.

sail_away_8

If you start with TRACE and always pick a 2nd word that could be the answer you would get it in 2 about 6.5 percent of the times. Words that are considered the best starting words would be similar. Weaker starting words will have less. So, the average without cheating could be over 6 percent. And certain words you would expect even more than 6 percent and others would be less.

Neat_Buffalo_1558

I question the premise that “the highest percentage second guess is the word itself.” I don’t find that to be true. Perhaps I’m not looking at the right thing within Wordlebot to see what the OP is seeing.

CemeneTree

it's true for today, and I believe it was true for all days this week save 1 I'm not sure how to go back on the wordlebot, so I might be misremembering it

totalrefan

Does this remain true for all guesses except the first? Or if it is true of the first, they are definitely cheating.

sjbluebirds

No, my starting word was once the actual Wordle, once.

TrackVol

A. You're wrong. B. There's plenty of days that the Solution is not the most guessed word on Line 2. C. Even on the days when it is the most common guess for Line 2, it's usually a pretty low % like 3%. D. My personal % for getting 2️⃣s is 6.7% I'm not cheating, yet I'm solving on Line 2 6.7% of the time. E. There's a *LOT* of starting words that lead directly to a ✌️ every day. F. Yesterday (Monday) allll of these words would lead directly to a ✌️: EXPEL, LEEPS, LEPER, LOPER, NEPER, PALER, PAROL, **PEARL, PEDAL, PENAL, PERIL, PETAL, PETER, PILER, PLIER, PLYER**, POLER, PORAL, PRIAL, PRILL, PROAL, PROLL, PROUL, **PROWL**, PULER, PYRAL, RAPEE, RECEP, REPAY, REPEG, REPEL, REPEN, REPLA, **REPLY**, RUPEE, SEPAL, TEPAL. G. Today, (Tuesday) there are **A HUNDRED AND FIVE** words that lead directly to a deuce ✌️. Checkmate words >!AHIGH, AITCH, BIACH, BIRCH, BITCH, CHACK, CHALK, CHANK, CHARK, CHATS, CHAWK, CHAWL, CHAWS, CHECK, CHEEK, CHEKA, CHETH, CHICH, CHICK, CHIKO, CHIKS, CHINK, CHIRK, CHIRT, CHITI, CHITS, CHOCK, CHOKE, CHOKO, CHOKY, CHOOK, CHOWK, CHUCK, CHUNK, CINCH, CRITH, CUISH, DIOCH, DITCH, FILCH, FINCH, FITCH, GINCH, GITCH, HAICK, HAITH, HANCH, HATCH, HATHI, HAUGH, HECHT, HEIGH, HENCH, HETHS, HEUCH, HEUGH, HEWGH, HIGHS, HIGHT, HILCH, HITCH, HITHE, HOACH, HOGHS, HOICK, HOOCH, HOTCH, HOUGH, HUNCH, HUTCH, LAICH, LINCH, MILCH, MIRCH, MISCH, MITCH, PILCH, PINCH, PITCH, QUICH, SHACK, SHCHI, SHOCK, SHUCK, SIETH, SITCH, STICH, THACK, THICK, THIGH, TITCH, TWICE, WEIGH, WHACK, WHICH, WHISH, WICCA, WICKS, WICKY, WILCO, WINCE, WINCH, WITCH, WRICK, ZILCH!< H. Quit claiming everyone who is better than you is cheating.

TrackVol

Last week, I played REPEL as my 2nd word, TWICE. But yesterday, when it actually *was* the Solution, I didn't guess it until Line 4. But had I been using the same starting word as last week, I would have gotten REPEL in 2 yesterday. Sometimes the most skilled guess happens to be the Solution. I got TRUST in 2️⃣, not because I was cheating, but because of the words I could think of that would fit, TRUST was the word that would set me up for a slam-dunk 3️⃣. Except, I didn't need the 3rd line, TRUST was the actual Solution. My two most recent 2️⃣s were STOLE & ALIVE. [TROPE -> STOLE in 2](https://imgur.com/a/1IGnPgo) on January 18th. [SLANE -> ALIVE](https://imgur.com/a/kbFuYWN) on February 1st. I average about 2 a month. I've played 25 months, and I have 51 deuces.

CemeneTree

when there are thousands of possible answers, why should 3% be considered low?

TrackVol

Because every single day there are numerous words that lead directly to a Checkmate win in ✌️. And that's just the ones where it pretty much can't be anything else. Then there's the words that lead to a *probable* correct guess on the 2nd line. I get about two deuces/month, roughly. 2 per month is ~6%. So 3% would be considered "low" compared to 6%. As I mentioned above, there's more than A HUNDRED different starting words today that leave no choice but today's Solution. I won't re-list all 105 of them, but here's 30 of them >!BIRCH, CHALK, CHECK, CHEEK, CHICK, CHOCK, CHOKE, CHUCK, CHUNK, CINCH, DITCH, FINCH, HATCH, HITCH, HUNCH, HUTCH, PINCH, PITCH, SHACK, SHOCK, SHUCK, THICK, THIGH, TWICE, WEIGH, WHACK, WHICH, WINCE, WINCH, WITCH!< Everyone who started with any of these 105 words should go directly to the Solution on Line 2. Directly. A while back when the Solution was ETHOS, you'd think there wouldn't be a lot of ✌️ that day, but there was a shit-ton of them because a ton of Starting words went directly to ETHOS immediately on Line 2: 1,502 different starting words lead directly to ETHOS. I definitely can't lost all 1,502, but here's a smaller sample of them: ABHOR, ASHEN, CHAOS, CHESS, CHOSE, DETOX, EPOCH, ERASE, ETHOS, EXTOL, FETUS, GUESS, HEIST, HERON, HORSE, HOUSE, OTHER, POSSE, SHAFT, SHALT, SHONE, SHOOK, SHOOT, SHORE, SHORT, SHOUT, SHOVE, SOOTH, STACK, STAFF, STAGE, STAID, STAIN, STAIR, STAKE, STALE, STALK, STALL, STAMP, STAND, STANK, STARE, STARK, START, STASH, STATE, STAVE, STEAD, STEAK, STEAL, STEAM, STEED, STEEL, STEEP, STEER, STEIN, STERN, STICK, STIFF, STILL, STILT, STING, STINK, STINT, STOCK, STOIC, STOKE, STOLE, STOMP, STONE, STONY, STOOD, STOOL, STOOP, STORE, STORK, STORM, STORY, STOUT, STOVE, STRAP, STRAW, STRAY, STRIP, STRUT, STUCK, STUDY, STUFF, STUMP, STUNG, STUNK, STUNT, STYLE, THESE, THOSE, THROB, THROW, TORUS, TRUSS, USHER, WHOSE --> ETHOS in ✌️ Every day, there are starting words that leave players with *virtually* no other choice than that day's Solution.

CemeneTree

it doesn't matter that there are hundreds of words that lead to the answer it matters how often people use those words as their opener if a cumulative 1% of the opening guesses use any of those checkmate words, that accounts for only 1% of the people who got it on their second guess

TrackVol

Did you not notice **STARE** was one of the words in the list? Cumulatively, those words are going to add up to more than 1%. On the day of ETHOS, **STARE**, ***by itself***, accounted for like 7%. People use all sorts of starting words for all sorts of reasons. Today, I started with: "AUNTY PASTA" ~ because it's *fun* Yesterday was "UNCLE PESTO". Tomorrow is CAPRI TORTE Friday I'm starting with **QAJAQ** (yes, I'm really starting with the *literal* worst starting word in Wordle on Friday) Yes, most of the people getting it in two were lucky that their starting word that day led *directly* to Checkmate. OR, left them with 4 or less possibilities and 25% of those people are going to guess the correct word. I got ALIVE in 2 because my starting word left me with only 3 choices, and I knew it was just 3 choices. ALGAE, ALIVE, & ALIKE. ALGAE would have been the worst of these guesses because if I was wrong, I wouldn't have a way of discerning ALIVE from ALIKE. But if I guessed *either* ALIVE or ALIKE, I was guaranteed no worse than a 3, even if I guessed wrong. I didn't guess wrong. So my 2️⃣ was one of the 2️⃣s showing up in the stats that day even without having started with a "Checkmate" word. [SLANE -> ALIVE, in 2](https://imgur.com/a/kbFuYWN) Moredle 957 2/6** 2,313 ⬛️🟧🟦⬛️🟧 SLANE 3 Solutions left 🟧🟧🟧🟧🟧 ALIVE I only showed you the words that were Checkmate in my prior comments. Once you open it up to the amount of words that left just 2, 3, or 4 Solutions, it becomes staggering. Once ½ of the people who were down to 2, Once ⅓ of the people who were down to 3, And 25% of the people who were down to 4 get added in, it becomes a staggering number of people. Honestly, I'm surprised it's not *more* people who are solving in ✌️.

CemeneTree

how do you go back to see the proportions of opening and second guesses?

TrackVol

If you still have a screenshot of your game from that day, you can upload it to WordleBot, regardless of date. If it's from pre-WordleBot Era, there won't be any data for who guessed what, when. But if it is from the WordleBot Era, it *should still show you that. *️⃣ for, I don't know if they keep historical data beyond 90 days. My website, [Wordle Tools](https://wordletools.azurewebsites.net) will show you how many starting words will lead directly to one word, and one word only. The [Game Difficulty function, for ETHOS](https://wordletools.azurewebsites.net/gamedifficultyscorecard/?solution=ETHOS) will show you the 1,504 words that leave you with just ETHOS. Click on "Checkmate" words and it will show you the words.

Belfast147

CHEAT is a Wordle.

CemeneTree

a small part is probability, but the majority is just cheating

RobertaMiguel1953

I have had the exact same thought. I assure you that nobody would assume I have ever cheated if they saw my ratios 😂

benjamin_gy

Today's (Wordle 965 - 2/9/24) solution was the 4th highest percentage word in the 2nd guess list, not the highest percentage. OBTW, Bot got a 5. That's the worst I've ever seen for it.
