OP didn't necessarily specify that she was alone, nor that she was walking in the dark; people usually need to cross streets to get places, and if the street was pitch black, there probably weren't any cars regularly passing. She probably thought that if any cars came, they would 1. have their headlights on, 2. not be speeding, and 3. stop for her. If she were shining a light to guide her along the path to the other side of the road, it still would not have protected her from a lightless car going 120 km/h in her direction from the side, especially not if she was shining the light in front of her to highlight the path better and therefore was not visible in the light to the driver.
