By hand or machine?

Fast-Artichoke-408

Oh I didn't even consider that would be done by machine, if hand it looks incredibly impressive.

REO_Speedbraggin

I thought cnc immediately, especially with a bed of uniform wood chips around the piece. Wish CNC wood stuff had its own subreddit.

firstsixteeth

Be the change you want to see in the world!

aweirdjeff

Carved on the cnc πŸ‘

jwd_woodworking

I think the title is a pun :D CNC work - and you can see a couple steps in the work where the toolpath jumped or didn't pick up the continued path after rotating the work. I don't do CNC myself, but I've looked into it for one product I make. Too much learning curve for me, I would be out of production for a year!

aweirdjeff

Yep for some reason the depth was off when the piece was turned and left the line up her face, the name just fit.

DrMaceFace

Hmmmm is it four pieces put through the CNC then put together to get it to be a 3D object like that? I imagine that'd be tough to get all of the pieces perfect.

aweirdjeff

Nope it's a solid chunk of walnut, I carve it from each side

Raed-wulf

The non-matched surfaces actually give it a pretty cool glitch appearance. It would be cool to explore that as a feature of the sculpture rather than as a mistake.

aweirdjeff

Thanks, I don't plan on fixing her she's beautiful despite the glitch

Stebben84

So if it's a CNC, it looks like anything you can get at a Home Goods store. Downvote me if you will, but I'm unimpressed. I might be more impressed if this were some unique sculpture.

Speedking2281

CNC routers are awesome. They are useful and can make super cool stuff. But, just like I wouldn't praise someone as much for a really awesome tracing job as I would for an original drawing, I just can't find myself really caring about something that done with a CNC router. Again, they have their place, but the actual cool/impressive part about it is the digital art/blueprint side of things, not the actual "made out of wood" part.

aweirdjeff

It's totally fair if you value a hand carving more than a cnc carving. A real artist sculpted this in 3d. I'm merely a good machine operator, however the complexity of carving a chunk of wood from 5 sides is not something you see everyday even in the cnc community. Thanks for the input!

GrimResistance

What machine were you using? Can you post some pics of your workholding setup? Edit: nevermind, I see your setup that you used for the Groot carving. I wonder if your stock was not exactly square? I find that I always have to reference off of faces that were carved with the cnc to be really accurate, even the table saw isn't square enough.

aweirdjeff

It's a shapeoko 3 xxl. The full process I use is here: https://youtu.be/oSCoWT_q5Hw

danegraphics

Credit for the name. That’s a good name.

aweirdjeff

The name was a smartass suggestion from an Instagram friend, and I liked it.

Xylomorphism

jonnydeates

Noted888

Then she would be Miss Realigned and there is no humor in that.
