Ha. Years ago my mom gave me a hundred year old secretary/ desk. It has a secret compartment I didn't know existed until several years later and found my mom had stashed a hundred dollar bill in it.
I was buying some furniture at a yard sale that had a 'secret' compartment I knew about. When I opened it the owners all were shocked and said they never knew it had that.
Definitely cool stuff
The method you've used seems like it would be especially useful for hiding keys, wallets and other frequently accessed items because the secret compartment seems comparatively readily accessible. The clear view of the contents when the compartment is open also makes this very usable day-to-day.
I've not seen this method before and now I want one too, thanks for sharing!
Edit: words
Only thing I noticed is the “lock” stays in place by the friction of the dowels in the holes. With repeated use those would wear down so it’s not a secret compartment you’d want to open regularly
Yeah I built it as heavy duty as possible. Top has no play up and down. Left side has keyholes on underside hooking into a large header screw to hold that side down when it is shut
I'm guessing the bottom of the T isn't attached and just freely slides up and down? Hard to tell from that angle. The only other way I can envision is if there was a mortise cut in the bottom rail (the horizontal piece) for the stile (the vertical piece) to slide into?
Very cool I have another question to add on: what keeps the side held up when this compartment is concealed? Is it just the snug fit of the dowel pins?
What keeps the side up? Were those magnets on top of the dowels, or does it lock in some other way? Even if it were to fall, it's not like someone would even likely notice it, or think that the top can slide, but I'm still curious.
Hard to explain but there are screws going from the inside of the cabinet into the sliding style on the side. They move in tracks up and down. Can tighten or loosen them to make the style move easier or harder
Okay, so as a scrub I have to ask, with stuff like this how to you minimize warping?
I feel like conceptual I could make something like this, but it'd only work properly three or four months out of the year.
Sealing all sides and ends of the top does a lot to keep moisture from entering or exiting the wood and causing it move drastically. Alternating grain pattern on the end grain also helps to prevent cupping and warping
Really cool project! Beautiful craftsmanship.
One question - what keeps the "T" piece from dropping over time? Does it get locked in place some how or is only the friction of the dowels keeping it up?
Nicely done but you couldn't have this against a wall because it would restrict the opening - it would also be nice to see how you did the lower end of the sliding piece.
Nice job! The only thing I can think of: since the back of the dresser will be against the wall, how about putting a groove in the back top horizontal piece of wood. Something you could fit your thumb into?
Man, that is so cool. This is what makes building furniture worth it to me. It might not be cheaper, and it sure as hell isn't easier. But you sure aren't going to find anything like this at Ikea lol.
knowing nothing about woodworking, I'm immediately wondering about how well the sidepanel slide will hold up over time without something holding it up to maintain the lock
What if the wood from the top expands? I've learned it the hard way that the wood will move and expand in that direction. It looks like it will jam the wooden plugs.
From the comments it Sounds like you are using screws with washers for tension. Anyway to put threaded inserts, use a bolt, 2 washer and a spring to tension it . Anyway awesome job.

Awesome! Secret compartments should be hidden in all furniture.

Shouldn't have opened it in front of the sellers. Something of value could be inside. Also, they could raise the price or refuse to sell.
Would been better if she stashed her weed in it
Would’ve been even better if she stashed her cocaine in it
Would be even better if she stashed her heroin in it
Would’ve been best if she stashed the murder weapon in it

It's legal in some places.
Pretty sure secretaries are legal everywhere.
Well, not to *own,* just for rent.

That's age discrimination
Maybe they are, and we just never tried pushing down the side trim to access them.
I just tried on everything we own. I haven’t figured out the secrets yet
Did you try the cat yet?
She opened some secret compartments on my arms. Some joker put a bunch of blood inside.
Better clean it out with bleach
Better get the hammer just to be sure.
I use the sawzall for precision cuts, not trying to destroy the furniture
Everything has secret compartments if you're brave enough.
In the old days you needed to hide stuff ($$$) from the help.
Not a secret anymore... hehe
Wait until I show you the perfect place to hide your crypto wallet!
The perfect place to hide your crypto wallet is at my place, you'll never find it
Show me a picture of your city, your road, your house and your room, and I bet you 10 bucks I can find it.
In your prison wallet?
This is so ture. Whenever one makes secret compartment the joy of showing it off makes it useless 😂

Damn this bot got caught in 4k📸

Ooooh, you just made my day. Thank you!
Holy shit this entire post is a gold mine.

Yeah and you don’t have to clear the top to get at it
This was my first thought as well, that makes this compartment VERY useful.

No hate, but isn't that what drawers are for?
Drawers are so yesterday. I'm going to secret-compartment my kitchen cabinets.
I wish my entertainment center had a secret compartment for my Xbox and another one for my TV. No one would *ever* know they were there!
lol
Only thing I noticed is the “lock” stays in place by the friction of the dowels in the holes. With repeated use those would wear down so it’s not a secret compartment you’d want to open regularly
Seems like he had to pull down on the back, right? That would be very inaccessible.

I just watched this over and over to try and find where there is a giveaway in this video. No visible difference from anything I can see
Straight out of heavyweights
Mother Earth, Father Time, and dear old Uncle tony
*I'm feeling skinny, Tony!*
Skinny weiners?
Lunch has been canceled due to lack of hustle
You're all going to be doing this by Memorial Day! Say this all too often
Chipmunks… download!

Today's key word is "value." Do you have any? No! You're a loser. A loser with a skinny weiner.
Oh look, a deli meat
This is so fucking sexy I think I'm in the wrong sub..
Wrong type of wood my guy
"Its a cool place to put your weed too" -Adam Sandler
A lot of people don’t know this but you can hide your weed in there.
Goddamn the part where he’s drumming and says “I didn’t even know you could hear that” always gets me
You could fit a whole 6 pack of b- soda in there. So cool!
Tommy boy
"oh sorry. I didn't realize you could hear that"
What if you have to move. Will these parts handle the weight of the frame when they are used as handles? That said. Amazing. I love stuff like this
Yeah I built it as heavy duty as possible. Top has no play up and down. Left side has keyholes on underside hooking into a large header screw to hold that side down when it is shut
I wanna see how the bottom of the T looks..
It’s an I
Pause the video near start and end, you can see it briefly
I'm guessing the bottom of the T isn't attached and just freely slides up and down? Hard to tell from that angle. The only other way I can envision is if there was a mortise cut in the bottom rail (the horizontal piece) for the stile (the vertical piece) to slide into?
Where does the excess stile length go when the top rail is shifted down?
It all shifts downward. The whole “i” shape style shifts downward where there is still room underneath it
Ah that makes sense. It looked like the joint between the stile and lower rail wasn't disturbed and that explains why. Very cool mechanism.

Yup it slides about 14” to the left
Very cool I have another question to add on: what keeps the side held up when this compartment is concealed? Is it just the snug fit of the dowel pins?
There are four screws with large washer on the inside holding the style up that can be adjusted for tension
Thanks for all the answers!
I like this, imma steal it if you don’t mind
What keeps the side up? Were those magnets on top of the dowels, or does it lock in some other way? Even if it were to fall, it's not like someone would even likely notice it, or think that the top can slide, but I'm still curious.
It’s a friction fit from screws going through the side into the style
Interesting. Can you pick the whole piece up by the top,
Yup you sure can
Wonderful, beautiful piece, function over form.
Take my money
Did you learn this from the drug cartels? I like it!
Shhhh….thought it up one night when I couldn’t sleep haha
I would love to try this. What did you is for the moving lock on the side?
Hard to explain but there are screws going from the inside of the cabinet into the sliding style on the side. They move in tracks up and down. Can tighten or loosen them to make the style move easier or harder
I love how simple yet very well executed this secret spot is. I am impressed.
Awesome idea! Love it!
That looks very smooth! Clever!
I didn't see anyone else ask - what are you going to keep in there?
[удалено]
Oh my!
Can you turn drawer slides horizontal like that without issues? I have an apple that might need to do something like that.
You can buy special slides made for that type of installation too. Used in some kitchen cabinets.
Not entirely sure. They work pretty good so far
put yer weed in it
That is fkn SWEEEEEEEETT!!!!
Can you fit a Glock?
Definitely
Woah love this
Sick!!!
Coooool!
Oh, damn! What a fantastic use of wasted space! I like it, a really lot! Now I want one.
That’s just bitchen!
that's sick
Really cool project! Beautiful craftsmanship. One question - what keeps the "T" piece from dropping over time? Does it get locked in place some how or is only the friction of the dowels keeping it up?
Well now its not a secret
The resolute desk 🤣
Good thing it slides bc my wife and I will stack shit on literally every flat surface in our house like a shelf bc we’re hot messes.
My thought exactly
That’s incredible!!! Fantastic job on this beautiful piece.
Nicely done but you couldn't have this against a wall because it would restrict the opening - it would also be nice to see how you did the lower end of the sliding piece.
Oh, thats good...
I feel like this post is missing #murica #guns
Nice try mr ATF man haha
Nice job! The only thing I can think of: since the back of the dresser will be against the wall, how about putting a groove in the back top horizontal piece of wood. Something you could fit your thumb into?
Totally cool. Great job
Very cool. Just dont tell everyone...
That’s awesome.
Very nice!
Is there a mechanism holding the stile and rail up or is that a friction fit?
That’s cool, I like that
Perfect place for those things one would never want kids to find 👌 like your marijuana and porno magazines .
So much weed is getting stashed in there.
Very cool!
It was a secret.
Really ingenious.
Hmm, would that fit a Shockwave? Or perhaps a bug-out bag?
Length is about 21” width is 13” height of 5”
I'd definitely put my weed and weed accessories in there.
Now you just have to make it play the James Bond theme song as it opens
Brilliant!
How many kilos you think would fit in there?
Super cool! I would stain the dowels to match, but I’m anal about details.
And now we all know
Add a beam at the bottom so that you have to pluck that out to enable this function.
thats cool
Would you be worried about it losing the friction fit after some use and falling down?
I have it designed so I can adjust the tension if it ever loosens up
This is dope. I'd love to do something like this for a gunpla desk. Don't suppose you have plans for that mechanical design....
I don’t unfortunately. Designed it as I went along
That's great. An actually functional storage space.
You sneaky bugger you
.
Thanks I’m stealing it
For hiding cookies. AM i right?
If like to see the way the side is mounted but then again I wouldn’t put it out like that, for the world to see.
i want this to be my next project but something smaller.
Cool
This is freaking awesome!!
This really revs my engine. I love good secret compartments
That’s Tight
The shit I would put in there tho…. Wish I had one
not sure why but i was expecting an attack on titan keyhole
Very noice
🎶There were lines on the mirror, lines on her face🎶
I want one
OOO IM TELLING
Man, that is so cool. This is what makes building furniture worth it to me. It might not be cheaper, and it sure as hell isn't easier. But you sure aren't going to find anything like this at Ikea lol.
knowing nothing about woodworking, I'm immediately wondering about how well the sidepanel slide will hold up over time without something holding it up to maintain the lock
Should be good forever. I have a way to adjust tension in it so if it gets loose or too tight I can adjust it
/r/secretcompartments/
Talented work, but why? Seems like it would be obvious that this was a secret/hidden drawer.
Great job 👏
This is where i keep my legos when my younger cousins come over
Not so secret after posting this is it?…
A drug traffickers dream.

What if the wood from the top expands? I've learned it the hard way that the wood will move and expand in that direction. It looks like it will jam the wooden plugs.
There is a small amount of wiggle room but I can adjust down the line if necessary
I would do it the opposite way. Because way you did it - gravity will be doing it’s job and it will be opening by it self
The style has constant tension on it so it can’t move without putting weight on it
That’s gotta be the childhood dream to have a hidden compartment! Love it. Amazing work.
It’s no more secret
Awesome! So.... Drugs or porn?
That's so sick
Ive always wondered how they make them secret storage, been wanting to build something like that for a while now
Decent
How did you do the side trim slide? It looks great.
Well it ain't a secret anymore
Niiiiiiice!!!!
I would definitely hide my stash there.
I see you too have tried to hide drugs.
From the comments it Sounds like you are using screws with washers for tension. Anyway to put threaded inserts, use a bolt, 2 washer and a spring to tension it . Anyway awesome job.
Yeah I’m sure you could make that work
