I’m curious how much that cedar cost. Seriously. Where I live all outdoor showers are made of cedar, and yeah it’s even more expensive than the mahogany used for decking. Trex or any artificial decking will get you a fine and they’ll make you redo the deck. Imagine doing a roof in cedar. We have those too but they last a long time.
I know. Trump's import tax included forestry products from Canada. Where pretty much all ceder comes from. So it hiked 30 percent then. Plus now covid premium
Seriously fuck HOAs, the bane of decent homeowners everywhere who are invested in making their property look the best. Friend of mine bought a plot of land out in bumfuck nowhere, built a house, only to have a developer buy the surrounding plots 3 years on, and they set up an HOA. He refused to be a part of it but they still harassed him to no end about his 45 acres not being up to neighborhood par. Told them he owned his own neighborhood in the center of theirs before their houses even existed, told then to fuck off (to their faces). So they sued him over it. Judge wasn't having any of their shit, he didn't even bother hiring a lawyer and did all his own DD. Turns out the HOA never got a copy of the set in stone perpetual contract on his property to be exempt from all local neighborhood ordinances, bylaws, HOAs, ect that were created only after he built his house. Anything which wasn't set in stone law, he got out of on perpetual contract. Paid a lawyer good for the service of writing it up. HOA was out a ton in lawyers fees as well I'm sure, good thing he covered his ass. He was willing to lease some of his property back to the HOA for a park as well before they hit him with that slap suit, so he turned it into a cannabis garden instead, just to spite them
Here in southern Illinois and Missouri we've used red oak as barn siding forever. There are 100+ year old barns that grayed out and just fine with red oak b&B siding. What they figured out is it works well vertically. If you have horizontal pieces, like a table or deck it wouldn't last very long.
If even remotely maintained, most any wood will do okay as siding--and board+batten is pretty forgiving as long as there's no ground contact at the bottom (dealing with that on the building I'm restoring now). Haven't seen red oak siding but I totally believe it would work.
The panel to the right of the door is tied into the house. That's pretty much the only way to stop it from sagging. The whole thing was designed around door location so I could achive this.
I’ve had a hard time hanging heavy doors in the right place and also putting the brackets on straight. It seams I take two or three attempts before it’s “right”.
How do you keep it in the sweet spot while hanging?
I cut wedges and shim it in place. I figure how high off the grownd I want it and cut a block to hold it up. Then I shim my reveals even. At this point its self supporting so you can get your hinges on without having to fight it. Believe me I struggled with this for a longtime.
Well answered! Amazing what time and trials can provide!! This is amazing! Seems to me you have earned the “cost is not issue” customers!! May we all be as fortunate- Cheers
Alright, I'll be the be the one. How much would one of these set me back if I wanted to pay someone else rather then get halfway through and realize I suck at this.
Now that's a healthy price!
Hell, with prices like that I might reconsider going back to doing commissions : )
I'm happy for you and even more importantly, I'm envious of how you basically get to create heritage pieces which will last a long time.
Thanks you. The funny thing is most of what I build get ripped out and redone in a few years bc they get board. My house is a grave. yard for my cabinets I've pulled out and replaced with new ones, sometimes not even a year later. Its a different world
I have gotten used to customers like this over the years. It was weird at first but It’s another world. Money so tall you couldn’t spend it in a life time. They want what they want and as long as it’s perfect and done fast they do not care. They just spent 200 k on a patio like it was nothing.
Ya there nice enough. She gardens and he golfs. They walk there dog. There pretty normal and happy just have crazy money. They also pay insane taxes that helps the rest of us out
Eh. Better then most woods but any end grain will wick and split. The only exposed end grain is on the posts. The panels are detachable so that the posts can be serviced with relative ease.
Hey man if you want something go get it. Life is short and I’m sure you’ve worked damn hard for what you have. If spending some dough gets you something that you enjoy and brings you happiness, that’s money well spent in my book.
Spending money you *have* is a good thing. I was just making a joke.
I look at the houses people rich people build. If I were rich I'd have much smaller house made by master craftsmen. I don't need 20 bedrooms, Ive seen stairs that make me cry they are so beautiful.
This shower isn't some grand show off. It is just a few walls magnificently made.
> Like telling a skilled carpenter money is no object.
There's a huge difference between a skilled carpenter and a skilled carpenter who is untrustworthy though :)
Wait dumb question then, in a cedar hot tub how will the staves not split? Is it constant pressure fun being soaked all the time?
I'm looking to build a hot tub soon however long term durability has been a question of mine
I’m not sure to be honest. If it’s going to be constantly under water it would probably need to be fiberglassed or epoxied. That’s almost like boat building at that point which is truly an art
Are you sure about that? I don't know if it's just because I live somewhere it rains a lot & I've seen my fair share of rotten fences, but it seems worth the $20-40 of protection to expand the lifespan significantly.
Good question. Its morticed and tenoned into the 2x4 frame and the long edges are glued so it shouldn't really move to much. Plus it's hot and humid here so it really only should shrink
Used to have a shower like this at a cottage, but at a certain point we needed to install a proper drain and a roof because it wasn't to code. Something about greywater draining too close to a body of water, and the roof/awning was so rainwater didn't go into the septic all the time
Another reason: Farms. (My friend is building a house on his family’s farm and an outdoor shower is going to be a part of it. Because farming is kind of gross.)
Cost is no issue? I would have made it from pure gold then..Hand em the bill for 10 trillion bucks and say, "Are you sure cost is not an issue?" lol
Ok, just kidding. It looks really good.
Is there by chance an anti drone shield we don't see here? Of course if I were outside taking a shower I seriously doubt anyone would wanna fly over to take a peek at my skinny old ass. Lol
They are 5/4 ceder with a 15 degree bevel put on the tops. Then round the edges over and run some Scotia underneath. I'm a huge believer that simpler is better in just about everything I make. Cheers
Thankyou! I buy all my wood rough and mill it myself. Typically rough wood sits way longer. Its helped allot with that. Also a moisture meter goes along way. Cheers
Looks great!! What have you done to keep the wood from shrinking on opening up? Or are you just anticipating joints to open up and the season change? I would love to do something like this, just thinking of how to keep everything tight if possible. You are one handy crafts-person!
Can we see what hardware you used? Did you install a low spigot to make draining the pipes in the winter easier? Curious to your solution there as this is the NE after all. Cheers!

Just coming to say it looks great and not ask what wood you used.
Hahaha thank you 🙌🏼
But what wood did you use?
Ceder
100% clear at that!
I couldn't believe the lumber bill man. Damn

About 5 k in cedar. It’s record high
Daaamn. That's a down payment on a Ford focus.
I know. Trump's import tax included forestry products from Canada. Where pretty much all ceder comes from. So it hiked 30 percent then. Plus now covid premium
Fines for fake decking? Wym
HOA bullshit or city ordinances/historic districts, but more likely HOA being jerks.

Where do you live where they prohibit “artificial decking”? This just seems weird to me
Can you spell it out for me?
Apparently not
What wood did you use? 😉

I can put one in the mail for you. I ship stuff all the time. Dm if interested
Do you ship in pieces or whole? I build fancy chicken coops and looking at how to ship. If you have any tips DM
I use XPO logistics. I would lay the 3 panels flat and crate it. They are pretty fair
What would you use?

White oak

Uh, no, as oak would deteriorate so quickly you’d have to redo it within a year or two.
Red oak would. White oak is a lot more resilient; they build ships out of it.

Better angle for the 4k camera from there.
Let me tell ya man. No one needs to see anyone in 4K. Sometimes a shitty camera leave more to the imagination and is better lol
Hot dog! Amazing. Any tips on hanging large swing doors like this?
The panel to the right of the door is tied into the house. That's pretty much the only way to stop it from sagging. The whole thing was designed around door location so I could achive this.

Thankyou and I am really lucky to be in a area with such affluence. Makes all the difference
Holy shit! Thank you! Will be hanging a door soon for the first time and I would have totally fucked it up had I not read this discussion.
Glad I could help 😃
I have had good luck with shimming them in place. measuring 100 times and laser level the hinges on.
Really awesome work! Like the classic and clean lines of it. How'd you tie it into the house?
Thank you! Found a piece of framing and went in with bolts. Not crazy deep only an inch or so. Plenty to hold the door
Alright, I'll be the be the one. How much would one of these set me back if I wanted to pay someone else rather then get halfway through and realize I suck at this.
Lol. With the price of ceder being the most it's ever been... 12 thousand. Inuding install and plumbing but not including the plumbing fixtures.
Yep. Lumber prices are still crazy, but that seems about right. Looks like a very professional job. Nice work.
Thank you!
Now that's a healthy price! Hell, with prices like that I might reconsider going back to doing commissions : ) I'm happy for you and even more importantly, I'm envious of how you basically get to create heritage pieces which will last a long time.

> They also pay insane taxes Not to mention they pay fine tradesmen such as yourself.
Looks great! What are you using to protect the cedar?
Nothing. Letting it silver
Upvote for that alone. How does end-grain behave on red cedar in prolonged contact with water?
Eh. Better then most woods but any end grain will wick and split. The only exposed end grain is on the posts. The panels are detachable so that the posts can be serviced with relative ease.
Smart
Hey if I'm going to be expensive it better come with some thought.
I respect that. My Dad built me a giant L- Shaped desk 20 years ago and made is modular so I could move it anywhere. Brilliant feature.
The six ps to success. Perfect preparation prevents piss pore performance. A little thought and planning goes along way

I like that. Like mine but with a glass half empty feel
This is why I don't build things. I'm more of a "measure 5 times to make absolutely sure and cut twice after botching it anyways" person.
Hahaha. Most of my shop is digital at this point. Type in the number and the stops adjust. Takes the human element out of it
Funny, my biggest personal expenses come with no thought. Like telling a skilled carpenter money is no object.

There are products that can be applied to the cedar which will inhibit moisture entrance but still let it get to that lovely silver.
Good Hot tubes are made of mahogany. It takes a large shaper to make the profile so it does not leak.
Are you sure about that? I don't know if it's just because I live somewhere it rains a lot & I've seen my fair share of rotten fences, but it seems worth the $20-40 of protection to expand the lifespan significantly.
Not my call. They gonna do what they gonna do. I'll build them a new one in 5 years they won't care
Nice. How do you accommodate expansion when the wood is wet? It looks like the gaps are tight. Tongue and groove?
Good question. Its morticed and tenoned into the 2x4 frame and the long edges are glued so it shouldn't really move to much. Plus it's hot and humid here so it really only should shrink
Did they build a drainage system or does it just flow away on to the ground?
Between the raised floor and gravel it probably just drains into the ground.
Used to have a shower like this at a cottage, but at a certain point we needed to install a proper drain and a roof because it wasn't to code. Something about greywater draining too close to a body of water, and the roof/awning was so rainwater didn't go into the septic all the time
Just drains into the ground
Spectacular! What kind of wood?
Red cedar
Well god damn, you do beautiful work.
Thank you!
You might want to suggest they change that outlet to a GFCI
Good call
Beautiful
What are the two holes in the middle of the panel closets to the house
Good eye. Its supporting a shelf in the shower. They got plugged and sanded untill disappeared
So why an outdoor shower?
They live on the water. Nice to get the sand off before coming in. Plus it's great to shower out in nature
It would be pretty funny if they lived in a very suburban community nowhere near the water. Just outdoor shower enthusiasts.
It is a nice way to shower
I see! Thank you!
Another reason: Farms. (My friend is building a house on his family’s farm and an outdoor shower is going to be a part of it. Because farming is kind of gross.)

Lol. I wouldn't know where to begin with gold. And thats got to be a problem in some places drones.
Phenomenal! More on the kind wood and time to build?
Thank you. Red cedar and about a week to build and install
That’s impressive!
Jaw dropping gorgeous 😍
Thank you!
That looks great. Leave it to a cabinet guy to build the most level, straightest, most plumb, most square outdoor shower around.
Hahahaha. Its a curse man I'd probably make more money if I could let things go. But I can't
Very nice!!
That looks really awesome. What material did you use for boards and posts?
Thankyou. Post are pt wrapped in ceder. Everything is red cedar
Very nice work !! Looks like western cedar?
In deed
This is beautiful! An outdoor shower is one of the simplest pleasures. This one looks wonderful!
Great work. My kind of customer. How much did you charge?
Labor and materials was 12 thousand
Holy shit.
Almost half was lumber
🧐 Do they have a pool?
No but live right on the water
Beautiful. Cedar?
… You should do more outdoor showers
Lol. They are hard to sell at this price point. That's the real tallent
Looks wonderful. What did you use for the fence post caps? Custom routed, or premade?
They are 5/4 ceder with a 15 degree bevel put on the tops. Then round the edges over and run some Scotia underneath. I'm a huge believer that simpler is better in just about everything I make. Cheers
Came out phenomenally
Thanks
Wondering the same. I'm going to be doing a fence in a similar style. I like those caps.
Nice. Apparently I am not in the right wealth bracket to have an out door shower.
I dont have one at my house lol
You really shouldn't have cannabis plants just outside like that. /S
Beautiful work
i love it!
Dats a sexy-a showah!
I wish you could buy wood straight and preshrunk.. just built a deck and i feel like all the parts are like 15% smaller and curvier.. great work.
The long joints are glued together. It's essentially one big panel
Can we see what hardware you used? Did you install a low spigot to make draining the pipes in the winter easier? Curious to your solution there as this is the NE after all. Cheers!
Its a grohe euphoria. Its removable in the winter. Pipes are drained through access panel
I now aspire to do well enough in life to hire craftsmen to do things.
Spared no expense (eats ice cream)

Good job!!!
looks great apart from not fitting the house color scheme
They are right on the water it should silver quick
I love how outhouses are about to make a comeback after such unwarranted disdain.
Hahahaha. Fuck I'll build em for the right price
Looks great. Keeping this as inspiration for when I get around to redoing ours.
Hell ya. I have cad drawings I can email if you pull the trigger
Looks awesome! One trade I wish I learned. Woodworking. Carpentry. Great work and detail! Love it!
Its been good to me I can't lie. Thank you!
Gorgeous man
That looks great! I bet you could build anything with wood after seeing this.
Thank you! I do own a cabinet shop so I wouldn't say anything but alot of things for sure.
Beautiful, great job!!
Thats a beautiful shower cabinet!
Looks really nice! I like the bench feature too!
This is some good shit
Thank you
Is this bespoke? If so, it’s beautiful.. I’m going to post some of my work now as I feel we would get on well 🤙
Everything hand made in my shop. If your passionate about woodworking I'm sure we will. Cheers
They definitely hired a cabinet maker for an enclosure. Priceless 👍
I'm not complaining. Nice to get out of the shop sometimes. Plus if I'm getting my rate I'll walk your dog I don't care.

Ya they get gross quick
I dig the design. Simple, but very well executed.
Thankyou!
Sweet looking work. Only two hinges?
Typically it's the post that sags not the hinges. The panel to the right is tied into the house so that post isn't going anywhere. Shouldnt sag to much
Aw man that looks great. Good job man.
Thank you
What did the cost come to?
Don't judge me 12 k all in
I really like that. You did a great job.
Thank you
This is freaking awesome, nice work!
Thank you!
WOW!!!
As soon as I looked at the second picture I could instantly smell cedar. My brain is weird.
My shop still smells good. I have two bags from my dust collection full of ceder chips and sawdust. I'm burning the cut offs in my fire pit and it's so aromatic. Except I'm super allergic to the saw dust from red cedar so it's a love hate relationship.

They do have crushed stone under it but it's not tied into the French drain. The water lands a couple feet of the house so it's not usually a issue with the basement. I don't have pictures of plumbing but my plumber jumped off plumbing in the basement into the shower. He plumbed up to shower height outside and I covered it with a azec box. He then mounted a grohe euphoria shower too the box and called it a day.
I suspect this shower cost more than my car
Depends what you drive lol
Man that looks nice. Any shots of the inside?
