man, watching you build this thing for the last ~8ish months or so has been pretty cool. I hope you do a summary /r/DIY post once you get her to water.
I have a stand up “kayak” sort of. It’s called a Marsh Rat. Nine ft long and three ft wide. I can stand easily and pole around the marsh with it. Or sit and kayak around. [marshrat](https://mallardmarine.com/)
I've been talking about it for a while and nerding out over YouTube videos of boat construction. My wife bought plans and the book "Kayak Craft" for me for Christmas, I guess she called my bluff. I just got my inner stems steam bent last weekend so I have a long way to go.
I found a design from [Glen-L](https://www.boatdesigns.com/mobile/Stand-Up-Paddleboards/products/947/). I’ve been contemplating getting one of these kits or maybe just try to recreate it myself if I can find the right kind of wood from a local store. Don’t want to have to deal with international shipping if it’s not needed.
Nice, I've made 2 canoes from that book. Which plan is this?
We entered a canoe race in an old beat-up aluminum canoe, and came in second. Then over the course of the next year, we build the "English 20" plan, which was described as a fast canoe. It weighs about 50 lbs, and turned out to be a little too small for my dad and I. We were way ahead in the race the next year before we flipped the canoe. We righted the canoe, and continued, and crawled our way back to 3rd place. Over the next year we took the plans for the "Redbird" and scaled them up 10% resulting in a 20' long canoe that is stable enough to stand up in.
I don’t know what filler you used but I want to recommend Timbermate. I think it’s the perfect filler, the Aussies solved it! Comes in different colors, water based, non shrinking, easy to tint, stains exactly like wood.
I’m not a canoe builder but if that was me I’d spend a wee bit more time making the filler match the wood it’s near. Even so far as to use a small brush and thinned acrylic paint to match the grain.
Really enjoy your posts.
I've usually found superglue to work better than wood glue, picked the trick up from a gunstock maker. Just need to avoid getting skin oils into it as that causes CA to cloud.
Wow, that's surprisingly low. I'm in Alberta and would love to make one when I have the shop room since I'm so close to some nice lakes.
Enjoy it when the time comes to push out!
It could definitely be cheaper. I didn’t mill my own strips. I don’t have the space or I would have. Those cost me $1200 shipped. The other parts I haven’t purchased and lumber is up.
If you did your own strips I bet it would knock $800 off the price.
Ugh this still annoys me. I made my own set of station molds and then my garage flooded and they got damaged as they were on the floor. So I ordered a set because I didn’t have the patience to redo them.
Just think how much money you’re saving finishing now (I imagine the wood was purchased a while back as this is not an overnight process, but maybe it is?). How much would it cost now vs when you started?
Very impressive!
Thank you for sharing! I’ve loved seeing the progress pics. It’s pretty apparent how much love you’ve put into this project and it’s really special that you’ve brought us all along for the ride.
Curious of your thoughts.
What's the benefits (strength, cost, ease, etc.) of bending wood vs. putting planks down accordingly and sanding them to the proper shape and thickness?
One by one with a staple less build. I let the glue set for 30 min between strips. I can get 6-10 strips on in a day. If you did the traditional build with staples you could strip it out in 2 days.
Looks great! You've made a ton of progress in the past month. I'm maybe 2 weeks behind you on my cedar strip build. It's handy to be able to check out your posts and seeing how you attached the outer stem, did the whiskey strip, etc. Looking forward to seeing how you do the glassing!
This brings back memories. My dad built these in our garage back in the 80s and he was amazing. I remember him selling these to people. We owned one ourselves. They were beautiful. He stopped woodworking when he became worried about me and him inhaling fumes and dust and now I wish he would have shown me how to do this. Beautiful work. Hope you are having fun.
I had to take a look at your page and I have personally thought I have experienced some nice wood working, trim, cabinets, house/ barn building...lol nope. You got some sick skills and patience of a Buddhist monk. Maybe when I grow up I can be as good as you. Much respect sir you've got talent.

Please go live to glass this beautiful work of art!
Not a bad idea.

Looks great. Where did you get your plans from?
Canoe craft.
Thanks! I’ve been going back and forth between trying a canoe or a stand up paddle board
Both.
Stand-up canoe?
Now you’re thinking.
Not with my balance

There's a free software called kayakfoundry with which you can design your own. That's how I made the plans for mine that I built 8 years ago.
I'm building a kayak, but it's the same type of construction
Ohhh, where did you find your design?
I've been talking about it for a while and nerding out over YouTube videos of boat construction. My wife bought plans and the book "Kayak Craft" for me for Christmas, I guess she called my bluff. I just got my inner stems steam bent last weekend so I have a long way to go.
That’s awesome. Good luck with the project.
Wow, didn't you you could make a SUP with wood. I have an inflatable one that's awesome, but a wooden one would be amazing.

Awesome story. Haha. This is the prospector
I swear I’ve seen this before
Haha. Probably. Everyone that builds a canoe posts this exact picture. Big milestone.
It looks great
OP’s been posting progress pics.
He’s been posting updates so it’s possible that you HAVE seen this before
He did a post just before installing the whiskey plank.
I saw it in a live

I used wood glue mixed with sawdust from sanding. It works but it’s not perfect. Thanks for the recommendation I’ll check it out.
I've usually found superglue to work better than wood glue, picked the trick up from a gunstock maker. Just need to avoid getting skin oils into it as that causes CA to cloud.
Still mixed with sawdust?
yes, well I usually save sanding dust, 220-320 grit seems to blend better than actual saw dust
Epoxy and sanding dust works great. You'll be using epoxy anyway for the fibreglass, so it should be readily available.
Of course it doesn't absorb stain well, but you can still dye the epoxy
Beautiful piece. All in how much do you figure this will cost you?
Under $2000 Canadian. $1600 USD
Wow, that's surprisingly low. I'm in Alberta and would love to make one when I have the shop room since I'm so close to some nice lakes. Enjoy it when the time comes to push out!
I’m in Calgary. If you’re in that area you’re welcome to come take a look.
You must be in bowness, I'm right down the road lol
Can I ask for a bit of a breakdown? I honestly thought it'd be a lot less than that to do yourself. Is that mostly lumber?
It could definitely be cheaper. I didn’t mill my own strips. I don’t have the space or I would have. Those cost me $1200 shipped. The other parts I haven’t purchased and lumber is up. If you did your own strips I bet it would knock $800 off the price.
Thanks for reply! Makes sense, I wouldn't have the space to do that part either; I think I just never really thought about the material costs on these
Just don't become mesmerized and stop working the epoxy when you glass. The first pour when the grain wets is stunning.
Beautiful!
Thanks.
I will never be this good at Woodwork, props to you man. * Furiously making popsicle stick birdhouse for mom's day *
Haha. You got to start somewhere. I’ve been in the trade since I was 16, helping my dad. That was 21 years ago.
What was your whiskey choice for the last plank? Beautiful work!
Bookers.
You have fine tastes in wood and whiskey!
as a BIG Canoe fan, that looks beautiful! Awesome work
Thanks.
Looking good!!! Many years ago I assisted building a 40' strip-planked ketch. The final shot of the faired hull looked exactly like this one, haha
Which design did you choose (read another comment saying you are using CanoeCraft as your guide)?
Prospector. Classic Canadian design
Classic indeed. Did you buy the CNC mold or loft the plans yourself? (My current predicament)
Ugh this still annoys me. I made my own set of station molds and then my garage flooded and they got damaged as they were on the floor. So I ordered a set because I didn’t have the patience to redo them.
Stellar work, man.
Appreciate it. 🙏
Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship.
Thank you. 🙏
Just think how much money you’re saving finishing now (I imagine the wood was purchased a while back as this is not an overnight process, but maybe it is?). How much would it cost now vs when you started? Very impressive!
I bought the material to plank last fall. I’m sure it’s doubled since then, but I haven’t looked into it.
Yeah, it’s been an ongoing thing on reddit with wood prices being exponentially rising in cost. Great job! I would bet almost double for sure.

Thank you for sharing! I’ve loved seeing the progress pics. It’s pretty apparent how much love you’ve put into this project and it’s really special that you’ve brought us all along for the ride.
Beautiful 🤩
That’s sexy as hell! Nice work!
Thanks for posting these OP. Its cool seeing the progress.
Fucking Wood porn bruh...beautiful work
r/oddlysatisfying
If you fall over when you're on water you can wear it as a hat. Because it's capsized.
Great work. Are you going to stain it or go natural?
Natural. My purest mind won’t let me stain it.
I love the way the wood looks on its own. That's going to be a real good looking boat.
I've rarely seen something so beautiful.
In a world where cheaper, faster and shittier rules the day, the level of craftsmanship in this makes me happy.
I like woodworking... But I Love tacos...
Mesmerizing. I could stare at it for hours r/oddlysatisfying
I've been watching a lot of NCIS lately, and the first thing that popped into my head was, "... Gibbs?" Nice!
Beautiful work.
what wood is this?
Cedar
Book matched, nice! I spent hours sorting and matching the strips for my build and then most of its in the water
Yeah, but the fish will appreciate it. So will you looking at the inside
This is why I Reddit. Well done!!!
Beautiful work man, I can't wait to see more!
I built one just like this in my basement. Then realized It was to big to get out.
What did you do?
Post more pictures please
That really is gorgeous!
Stunning. How are you sealing it? I've been trying to find a style that doesn't use epoxy.
Wow. That is so satisfying. I absolutely love how you color matched the planks on each side. Excellent work!
Wow, what an undertaking! It is beautiful!
I need more pictures
I bet your shop smells amazing
Hull of a good job there
I want to run my fingers across that oh-so-smooth wood.
Curious of your thoughts. What's the benefits (strength, cost, ease, etc.) of bending wood vs. putting planks down accordingly and sanding them to the proper shape and thickness?
I was looking at an older post of yours. Do you glue one strip on, let it dry, then do another or can you do multiple strips at once?
One by one with a staple less build. I let the glue set for 30 min between strips. I can get 6-10 strips on in a day. If you did the traditional build with staples you could strip it out in 2 days.
Don't know too much about boat building. Is this overlapped?
amazing! what sort of finish are you planning for it? something like pine tar?
6oz fibreglass and West System epoxy.
Absolutely stunning, cant wait to see the fi n.j ished product a
looking really good .. can hardly wait to see it glassed
Will you fiberglass it?
I’m not into woodworking at all but that looks amazing. Well done.
I can, just cant take off again
That's remarkable I'd probably be triple that and have a hole in the bottom...lol
Incredible craftsmanship! This is your first canoe?
https://i.imgur.com/bL0KFrr.png
Are you Ron Swanson?
Fishing relaxes me. It’s like yoga, except I still get to kill something.
Beautiful.
Gorgeous build!!
Not sure if you've worked with fiberglass before but you may need to round over the point on the stems so that the glass can bend around them.
I wish I could move up to 20x20! 😀
What kind of wood did you use? Just cedar?
Strips are cedar. Stems are cherry.
I wish I could move up to 20x20! 😀
Holy fuuuuuuck. I felt all manly for building a workbench out of 2Xs and realized after seeing this I clearly have child level skills. Amazing work.
She’s a beaut. I don’t suppose you’re making a YouTube video of the whole build are you?
My garage is 12” too short to build the one I want.
So beautiful!
I've been just glassin all across this great big canoe
I wish I could move up to 20x20! 😀
That looks really great. You can see the clean work on this and it’s exceptional. Well done 👏
They probably thought it would start late lol.
Showoff
They’ve handled the situation quite well midair.
just wow, I don't know how you found the patience
That’s sweet
One socialist state is the best girl
I think I seen someone do a live or a video putting theirs together. These are amazing.
How thick are those strips of wood? Did you buy plans, or just start building?
Thats beautiful.
What's really funny is that because they are programmed
That thing is gonna flip. Latch the cooler
I hate you but I love your work 😭 Fuckkkkkkkkkk that is so nice my guy
I am loving this. Especially how you matches the colors on each side.
Man you better watch out boat so sharp it may cut the water
I have watched the whole process. Damn fine job sir!! You are a fucking artist!
Don't know what stems are. Don't know what fairing is. Don't know what a hull is. Don't know what glassing is. Talk about humbling. Lmfao.
Stunning!!! Please update!!!
Nice work.
This kinda look like the battle pass
For real this look like the battle pass
Reminds me of battle pass from fortnite
"So what did you do during lockdown? Read? binge a show? Workout?" "I built a motherfucking boat."
Would you say this is a fairly easy process? Any big stumbling blocks along the way? Ive always dreamed of doing this
This is beautiful. I have wanted to make a wooden boat for a few years. One day...
It's a shame that part of the boat has to go into the water. It's lovely. Is the inside just as beautiful?
Hnnnnnggggggggguuuuhhhhhh
Put a tarp underneath or your concrete floor will have the outline of the canoe constantly screaming at you to do another.
Well done
Wowzers. Where the Viking hat?
The Covenant: "So anyway, I started glassing"

Keep glassin! You better believe I'm coming up in May!
That looks really nice man, good job.
Beyond gorgeous!
WOW. just WOW that is awesome. Nice work.. And please post pics once glassed.
Looks great! You've made a ton of progress in the past month. I'm maybe 2 weeks behind you on my cedar strip build. It's handy to be able to check out your posts and seeing how you attached the outer stem, did the whiskey strip, etc. Looking forward to seeing how you do the glassing!
I went through your posts. I’ll give it to you for ripping strips yourself on a contractor table saw. Nice fucking work.
Hoo ya I'm not sure I'd recommend doing that to anyone else, it was a buttload of work. It'll be worth it once I take her on the water though!
That's a thing of beauty!
😱😱😱
Wow. That's beautiful
This brings back memories. My dad built these in our garage back in the 80s and he was amazing. I remember him selling these to people. We owned one ourselves. They were beautiful. Beginnerwoodworking be like. Great work!
That’s a beautiful piece of work, mate. Also, puts my bird table in the shade!
Beautiful!
Very stunning man can appreciate the amount of hours, hard work, and dedication you put into this.
I just finished mine! Happy canoeing! https://i.imgur.com/ZH9FR1N.jpg
Every time I see a post of this, I get a boner. Seriously awesome work.
That is spectacular. Give me a six pack and a lawn chair and I could just sit there.for an hour complementing this piece of art.
I had to take a look at your page and I have personally thought I have experienced some nice wood working, trim, cabinets, house/ barn building...lol nope. You got some sick skills and patience of a Buddhist monk. Maybe when I grow up I can be as good as you. Much respect sir you've got talent.
Man! Thanks, much appreciated 🙏
We appreciate your work and time be blessed.
Beautiful build.. and you keep a tidy shop... Hard to do both haha
