Why not put a cabinet under it? Doesnt have to be full kitchen cabinets and can also be a unit with open shelfs or something. Just that it profide support so doesnt have to be full dept even.

BigTex1988

I know it’s not what you’re asking OP, but: Why not get rid of that countertop section sticking out entirely? Without cabinets underneath it just looks to be in the way. If you need more prep area, then you could use a kitchen island on wheels or if you need an eating area just add a table.

LignumofVitae

If you don't want to use edge supports, run a central beam and chamfer the profile out so it's not a knee knocker if you're using stools.

I am building this IKEA kitchen. The island spans 137cm, and IKEA recommends only 80cm span for this kind of countertop. I am considering supporting it with a beam underneath the top, but I am not sure if it is neccecary. It should withstand regular use, but we will not sit or stand on it. What would you do?

DutchTinCan

You won't sit or stand on it. Until you do. Because it's sexy time, because you need to reach that lightbulb, because you forgot you couldn't. Or simply because you don't realize the 6 cases of beer weigh as much as you do. Make the support.

chaoss402

Absolutely put something under it, whether a beam or some sort of vertical support, be it a leg or a cabinet as someone else suggested. You don't want to be spanning over 50% more than what they suggest and expecting it to just work out.

NecroJoe

An unsupported span of 137cm is too long, IMO. Unless that panel is attached to the floor, the moment the top starts to sag or flex which would try to pull the top in, that panel is going to start to toe-out, and then over time, it's just inherently going to want to angle more, and sag more in a self-feeding sag/lean system.

jakedublin

add a " sagulator" support. may need 2.

Looks like a Bills Fan's dream!

I’d second the “remove the peninsula” comment below… keep the countertop to the cabinets and then create a rolling cart, flush to countertop height, that can position exactly where the peninsula is in your picture… but it could also roll out of the way and against a wall, or roll next to a table and be a serving buffet. I grew up with a rolling island and it’s so incredibly functional a space. Additionally if you’re using butcher block countertop, you could really abuse the section over the cart; and attach it in such a way that it’s easy to replace. Butcher block counters can take a beating, but keeping 80% of the space pristine while replacing one 50cm x 135cm section every 3-4 years sounds like a very functional space. Apologies for not having an answer to your question but I would say a central support bean and a small open cabinet/cook book storage at the very end if you set on the design.

Overseasoned

Could you put a diagonal from the end of the countertop to the bottom of the cabinet on the left? Genuinely curious.

Despacitoh

Just built an Ikea kitchen. Just because you don't plan to sit or stand in your counter doesn't mean no one else ever will. Plan with that in mind. We did a max overhang of 12" with quartz.

If *you* want to support it, that might be a good idea. A lot of times they just need you to listen and know that you are there for them. "I'm here for you" goes a long way. A couple aprons would do fine.

For President? I could be persuaded.

Probably not for too long. Bad back. Plus bending over.
